The GT Fashion Week closed out the major fashion events in Lagos for the year this month (November). Held at the GT Centre in Oniru Lagos on the 11th and 12th, this marked the sixth edition of the event. Every year around this time, GTBank dedicates two days to organizing a fashion week that brings together both local and international designers, fashion enthusiasts, trendsetters, and industry professionals.

The two-day event was filled with activities, which included brands showcasing their Spring Summer 2024 Collections on the runway, shopping from the massive fashion arcades where top fashion brands had their products for sale, and more.

Hi there, and welcome! his year's fashion week was exciting, with brands creating collections with zero carbon footprints, sourcing locally, and collaborating with locals. Multiple fashion brands brought sustainability to the forefront once more, and it was an interesting reminder that Nigerian and African brands are creating intentional products.

It’s a wrap for fashion week for this year and it’s been interesting getting to watch new collections, trend predictions and generally Nigerian and African designers pushing themselves creatively for their Spring/Summer 2024 Collections.

Gtbank Fashion Weekend is the best way to close out fashion week and this year it was a good experience. The event has over the years gradually built a hub for fashion retail/enterprise, talents and nurtured creativity while bringing together African and global designers as well as celebrated personalities across fashion and beauty.

Danielle was our fashion insider this season as she attended all the shows giving us front row access all the way.

We have curated the end of the fashion season especially for you in this edition dedicated to saying goodbye to fashion week for this season until the next.

agos, Nigeria [November 2023] – The Africa Creative Market (ACM), a beacon of inspiration and empowerment for African creatives, recently concluded its 2023 edition of creative enlightenment. Held at the 21st Century Technologies Limited in the heart of Lekki Phase I, Lagos, ACM 2023 took place from November 2 to 7, 2023. This second edition of the event solidified its position as a vital platform for nurturing and propelling the future of creativity on the African continent.

The curtain was raised on this journey at a private reception on November 2, 2023, hosted by the U.S. Consulate in Nigeria. The gathering was a convergence of industry luminaries and visionaries, setting the stage for a week of inspiration, knowledge sharing, and networking. With unwavering commitment, Dr. Inya Lawal, the visionary Co-founder of Africa Creative Market, demonstrated her dedication to empowering the creative sector and emerging talents seeking their place in the sector. In an interview at the ACM event, she said, "By bringing together artists, designers, and creative entrepreneurs from across the continent, we create a platform for networking, collaboration, and exposure through ACM. This, in turn, helps in fostering innovation, economic development, and job creation within the creative sector in Africa."

ACM 2023 was a vibrant tapestry of panel discussions, keynote speeches, seminars, master classes, creative sessions, and more.

sub-segment, featuring an opening speech by Bada Akintunde-Johnson, Co-founder of ACM and Country Manager at Paramount Africa.

He underscored the importance of the music industry in Africa and ACM's role in shaping the future for creatives across the continent.

Will Stevens, Chargé D'Affaires of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, brought an international perspective to the event, recognizing the global significance of African creativity in music, film, fashion, and the arts. He emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between African creativity and the world stage, demonstrating the U.S.' commitment to supporting African creatives. During his address, he stated, "Africa has assumed a prominent role in the global entertainment landscape, with Nigeria at its core. The United States wholeheartedly supports creative talent in Africa and is dedicated to offering platforms for their economic growth. That's why we've joined hands with Africa Creative Market." He brought an international dimension to the occasion by underlining the significance of connecting African creativity with the global arena.

One highlight of ACM 2023 was a keynote session on intellectual property and the protection of creative rights. Ramin Toloui, the Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, highlighted the importance of regulatory frameworks to incentivize innovation and creativity. Herbert Wigwe, Founder of the HOW Foundation and WIGWE University, contributed valuable insights on protecting inventions and

creations, emphasizing the role of universities and research institutions in assisting creatives with intellectual property matters.

Intellectual property lawyer Nabila Aguele, a former Special Assistant to the Honorable Minister for Finance, Budget, and National Planning, stressed the importance of intellectual property enforcement for sustainable development in the African creative sector. She urged African countries to prioritize the creation and improvement of a robust intellectual property framework, safeguarding the rights of creators and fostering financial growth within the industry. "We, as African nations, need to make it a top priority to advocate for the development and enhancement of a strong intellectual property framework. This framework should safeguard the rights of creators and drive economic prosperity within our creative industry," she emphasized.

Furthermore, Yinka Davies curated the Creative Unveil session, a 2-day workshop for aspiring and established music arts, featuring Nollywood veteran Taiwo Ajai-Lycett and Mádé Kuti. Taiwo Ajai-Lycett shared her wisdom, emphasizing the importance of humility in the creative process. Her words resonated with attendees, highlighting that humility is a quality that defines greatness. Attendees delved into ways of unlocking their artistic potential, fostering connections with fellow creatives, and immersing them in a wellspring of endless inspiration.

This insightful panel session offered a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of African creatives and the challenges they overcome to achieve their dreams in the industry.

The final day of ACM 2023 featured legendary dancer Kafayat Shafau (Kaffy), who led a practical workshop on the art of commercial choreography and Afro-dance expression. She emphasized how creatives in the dance space can upscale their talents while embracing the artistry of movement. A panel discussion, featuring Iyabo Ojo, Daniel Grey-Leonge (Drey Beatz), Bunmi Olunloyo, and Wale Rubber, addressed key issues in the creative dance industry, including the impact of social media, managing societal expectations, and creating value as a creative.

Other distinguished speakers and panelists at ACM 2023 included Obi Asika, Yvonne VictorOlomu, Kola Oshalusi, Emmanuel Tarfa, Chigul, Sam Dede, Malikat Rufai, Ijeoma Onah, Connie Aluoch, Dedren Snead, Busola Komolafe, Davidson Oturu, Similoluwa Oyelude, Professor Bankole Sodipo, Ibukunoluwa M. The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) 2023

he Africa International Film Festival AFRIFF kicked off on November 5th with a grand opening night at the prestigious Royal Box in Cube 65, Mikano Building, Victoria Island Lagos. AFRIFF, is a highly regarded platform that focuses on promoting and celebrating the diverse world of African cinema. It goes on for a week and its main goal is to showcase contemporary and classic African films, providing inspiration, education, and entertainment for both local and international audiences through film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and awards ceremonies, AFRIFF creates a recognition for African cinema on a global scale.

The opening ceremony was a star-studded affair, with A-list celebrities such as Ini Edo, Kate Henshaw, Bovi, Beverly Naya, Dakore Egbuson, Kunle Remi, Jide Kene Achufusi, Uche Jombo, Chidi Mokeme, Eyinna Nwigwe, Idia Aisien, Vj Adams, Comfort Booth, Nse Nkpe Etim, Ay Makun, and Diana Eneje in attendance.

The theme of the party was "Deadly Assassins," and the guests embraced it by dressing accordingly.

The red carpet was graced by renowned Nollywood filmmakers, movie directors, and producers, truly adding to the glamour of the event.

The presence of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, highlighted the importance of AFRIFF in the city's cultural scene. Other notable figures present on the opening night included Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Corporation; Mofid Karame, Chairman of Mikano International; Adia Sowho, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Nigeria; Hollywood movie director and AFRIFF jury head, Steven Dr. Love; Nigerian British screenwriter Abby Ajayi; award-winning Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangaregmba; Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker and director of the opening film "Orah," Lonzo Nzekwe; Lebanese writer and producer Louay Khraish; and Portuguese-Guinean actor Welkey Bengue.

The movie “Orah” was the opening movie which captivated the audience and held their attention throughout and left them engaged in discussions.

Directed by Nigerian-Canadian Lonzo Nzekwe, the film showcases the talent and creativity that define African cinema through its compelling narrative.

Following the premiere, guests were treated to an after party hosted by Martell at the newly opened Lavella nightclub. The evening continued with music, dance, and celebrations, providing attendees with the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy themselves.

Attendees enjoyed music, food, and fashion lovers and enthusiasts proudly showing off their outfits for the camera. Inside the hall, different sections were designated for various activities and outside were streetwear fashion vendors.

This year's masterclass as usual had notable figures from the fashion and beauty world.

Julee Wilson, the beauty editor-at-large at Cosmopolitan, Sergio Hudson, a renowned fashion designer, Jawara Wauchope, a celebrity hair stylist, supermodel Jourdan Dunn and Sir John, a celebrity makeup artist, who were all invited to share their insights on various topics.

During each masterclass session, engaging discussions took place on subjects like Mental Health, appreciation of black culture, pursuing one's dreams, and the art of hair sculpting, among others. The attendees had the opportunity to gain valuable insights and takeaways from these thought-provoking conversations.

The masterclass was accompanied by the highly anticipated runway show, featuring a curated selection of designers who showcased their latest collections. Torlowei, Banke Kuku, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Sergio Hudson, Sukeina, Duaba Serwa, Bruce Glen, Mazelle, Loza, Theophilio, and Huishan Zhang all showed their latest collections.

Kicking off the runway show was Theophilio, who presented an impressive collection of over 40 pieces on the first day. This set the stage for a diverse range of stunning collections that awaited attendees over the course of the two-day event. The show concluded with a remarkable display by Sukeina, who showcased nearly 40 pieces and received a grand celebration from the enthusiastic crowd.

The GT Fashion Weekend wraps up fashion week in Nigeria; coming just weeks after the Lagos Fashion Week held recently.

Ejiro Amos Tafiri is known for her timeless layering, multitexture fusion of fabrics and embellishments reminiscent of African royalty while keeping elegance, complex simplicity and fluidity as the watchword.

The brand seeks to challenge and push what is inherently traditional to mainstream fashion through innovative applications of fabric, modern cuts, and drapery technique while celebrating feminine curves. Creating pieces that can be worn from the runway and into everyday lives, making it pretty elegant and chic without excessive drama.

RWANDA VISA FREE TRAVEL POLICY: What Does This Mean for Africans?

n the 2nd of November 2023, President Paul Kagame made a significant announcement: Rwanda is set to allow visa-free travel for Africans.

Securing a visa can often be a daunting task and a major deterrent for travelers. In fact, it stands as one of the primary reasons many people hesitate to embark on journeys.

Rwanda's policy of visa-free travel seeks to address and eliminate this challenge, particularly for African travelers. But what precisely does this policy encompass?

When a nation implements a visa-free entry policy, it signifies that individuals from specific countries can visit that nation for a designated duration without the obligation to secure a visa in advance.

This facilitates travelers to enter the country for purposes such as tourism, business, or other nonimmigrant reasons without the burdensome visa application process.

The announcement of visa-free travel for all Africans was made by Paul Kagame during the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council, where he also promoted Rwanda as a tourist destination.

Kagame emphasized the significance of tourism in Rwanda's economic growth. This move aligns with Africa's broader initiative to streamline movement and trade within the continent, akin to Europe's Schengen zone.

While Rwanda has opened its visa-free doors to all Africans, certain essential documents are still required for travel to Rwanda. Let's explore them:

Will you grow a Mo for Movember?

t is Movember, a time for men to go shaggy in aid of men’s health. Movember is an annual event in November, when men are encouraged to grow moustaches to raise awareness of health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.

Men struggle to discuss their health, particularly their mental and prostate health. Research shows that men will feel more comfortable discussing health problems if more men were open about their problems. Men need to become comfortable with discussing their health with their doctors, friends, and family.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. A sizeable number of black men can be reluctant to see their doctors because of perceived fear of wearing a catheter or erectile dysfunction from the treatment of prostate cancer.

What is the Prostate Gland?

The prostate is a gland at the base of the bladder. It is usually the size and shape of a walnut and grows bigger as men get older. It sits just below the bladder and wraps round the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine out of the body. The prostate helps to make semen, the fluid that carries sperm.

The most common prostate problems are, non-cancerous enlarged prostate (BPH), prostatitis and prostate cancer These conditions have similar symptoms such as passing urine frequently, waking up at night to pass urine, passing blood in urine and poor urine flow; so, symptoms alone cannot be used differentiate between the diseases.

What is the Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer can develop when cells in the prostate start to grow in an uncontrolled way. Some prostate cancer grows too slowly to cause any problems even if untreated, whilst some grow quickly. The cancers that grow quickly are more likely to spread and will need treatment to stop it from spreading.

The challenge is that it is not always possible to differentiate between the slow growing and the fast-growing cancers, so some people may end being treated for slow growing cancers that may not have caused them significant problems if they had been left untreated.

The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test?

PSA is a blood test to measure the amount of the protein, PSA in the blood. All men have a certain level of PSA in their blood and this level varies with age. A PSA level that is higher than that expected of a person’s age could be a sign of prostate cancer.

The PSA level is not reliable predictor of whether a man has prostate cancer. PSA can be normal in men who have cancer, whilst some men with a raised PSA will not have prostate cancer. A high PSA may be from other conditions of prostate or from a urine infection. Therefore, a diagnosis of prostate cancer is not made on a PSA level alone. People with elevated PSA should see a Urologist for further tests. These tests may include an MRI of the prostate and a prostate biopsy.

Men who are over 40 years of age or at risk of getting prostate should ask their family physician for a PSA test. Do not wait to develop symptoms to have a PSA test because symptoms are usually present in late stages of prostate cancer.

Early diagnosis of most cancers makes it likely to have a successful treatment and cure, whilst late diagnosis is associated with a lesser chance of successful treatment and an increased risk of death. This also applies to prostate cancer.

Bottom line • People with early prostate cancer may not have symptoms.

• Do not wait for symptoms of prostate cancer, as these are seen in late-stage prostate cancer.

• Detecting prostate cancer early is usually associated with successful treatment.

• Use Movember movement to encourage men in your life to get a PSA test if they are at risk.

What are the symptoms?

According to Cancer Research UK, prostate cancer usually starts in the outer cells of the prostate. In early prostate cancer, most men will not experience any symptoms, as there is no obstruction of the urethra. As the cancer advances, the urethra could become partially or entirely blocked, causing problems with urination: difficulty starting urination, urinating often especially at night, trouble emptying their bladder, and blood in urine or semen.

Who is at Risk?

The biggest risk factor is aging. The older a man is, the higher the chance of him getting prostate cancer. Every man has a one in eight lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer. Unfortunately for black men, their risk is doubled because one in four black men are expected to get prostate cancer in their lifetime.

A survey by Prostate Cancer Research revealed that only a quarter of black men were aware of their increased risk. Scientists do not know the full reasons why black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer, but it is thought it may be related to inherited genes.

Men with many close relatives with prostate and breast cancers are at increased risk; men with brothers or fathers who develop prostate cancer before the age of 60 have a higher risk, as well as men who inherit a faulty BRACA gene, a gene strongly associated with increased risk of breast cancer.

Cancer Research UK, say that one in four cancers can be prevented if people took up healthy lifestyle choices: not smoking or stop smoking and maintain a healthy weight and diet. However, risk factors like

Instructions: 1. In a blender, combine the pineapple cubes and mint leaves.

2. Blend until smooth and well combined.

3. Taste and add honey if desired for extra sweetness.
