The Lagos Fashion Week has ended, and as usual, the annual event featured a diverse collection of Spring Summer ‘24 Looks. Of note this year is how many more designers “now fully understand sustainability”. It was evident in the pieces that graced the runway; onsite and off.

Hi there, and welcome! t's our Fashion Week Special!

Nigerian and African fashion designers debuted their SS24 collections during Lagos Fashion Week, and we were there to witness it all. This season, we were drawn to the offsite shows. In this edition, we have curated these for you.

The Lagos Fashion Week, a Style House Files production held from 25th to 29th October 2023 and a lot of fashion designers showed their new season collections and it was all shades of amazing.

ATAFO opened Fashion Week with an offsite show (his second off-site show) at Eko Hotel placing a whooping 800 guests front row! The onsite shows had talented designers on the runway with some making their debut; Lila.Bare and Studio IMO did and presented great shows.

The conscious sustainability that is evident across almost all of the collections gets a huge thumbs up from us; it's safe to say almost all of the designers are more environmentally conscious and reducing (some completely) finding a way around eliminating carbon footprints- a huge win for the industry.

Don’t miss the best of the offsite shows from Sisiano to Ejiro Amos Tafiri and Marvee and I.N who also tied their presentations to Fashion Week. It’s an album of fashion if we dare say so.

Danielle -who is still reeling off the effect of Fashion Week as a first-time attendee- was there to catch all the live action and even though we can’t possibly share everything with you (a good time to catch up on our social media channels @dtnowdigital) we have curated enough for you in this edition.

Join us for an immersive experience in this edition, where the catwalk is transformed into a canvas and designers paint a conscious and responsible picture with timeless fabrics, bold colours, and textures.

The holiday countdown has begun for me.

After all the Spring Summer Collection looks we just saw at Lagos Fashion Week, I think it’s time to start getting our cards ready to be swiped for some holiday fashion shopping after all!

he world of Nigerian fashion converged at the Fashion Tents of the Federal Palace Hotel for Lagos Fashion Week 2023 and it was beyond amazing. The event which was held from the 25th to the 29th brought together different designers both old and new, local and foreign in one place.

Lagos Fashion Week (LagosFW) is a fashion platform that plays a crucial role in advancing the Nigerian and broader African fashion industry. It achieves this by uniting buyers, consumers, and the media to showcase the latest collections of designers in the bustling fashion hub of Lagos, Nigeria. True to form, this year's event boasted an impressive lineup of talented designers.

We got to see amazing street styles and innovative designers like Oshomor, Ugo Monye, Cynthia Abila, Elie Kuame, Kadiju, Kilentar, Piillz N Poizn, Lila Bare and LFJ.

Lush Hair came with so much creativity infusing their hair products into fashionable and wearable pieces on the runway. Celebrities and Influencers like Mercy Eke and Shaffy Bello also walked the runway representing different designers. The Governor of Lagos State was also in attendance and got to walk the runway in an Emmy Kasbit jacket.

My Recap Of Lagos Fashion Week:

10 BEST SHOWS

I

wasn't quite sure of what to expect during the 2023 fashion season. The year had been a tumultuous one; we had begun the year with fuel scarcity (we are still currently battling the said scarcity), there was no cash in circulation at some point, the current exchange rate between the naira and the dollar is at an all-time high, and we had had the most polarizing election in recent history.

As usual, the event took place at the Federal Palace Hotel grounds, between the 25th and the 29th of October, bringing in the cognoscenti of the fashion industry and its aspiring enthusiasts.

Did it feel right to celebrate one of our most successful and creative exports in the midst of a national financial crisis? What were the clothes going to say that we haven't already heard? Is there hope for the future of fashion? Like in life, we must forge ahead in spite of perilous times.

I was very sceptical initially, as the schedule of shows revealed the absence of quite a few prominent names, but once the week started, the abundance of creativity was enough to silence any lingering doubt. Hope shone through the gloom, and I was reminded once again why this industry even exists in the first place.

This season, there were more offsite shows than usual, but the tents equally had its fair share of great onsite shows. These are my best 10 shows:

Atafo

Mai Atafo said it himself in his address to the audience that these aren't clothes we haven't seen before, but they are polished and well tailored. Shown to no less than 600 guests, the collection began with traditional garb from his hometown in Edo state: grand skirts that were far from feminine but made strong by the tailored tunics and jackets they were paired with. It eventually ran the gamut from bridal wear to office wear to casual wear, in tame tones of grey, maroon, and rust.

Marvellous Olugu showed a tightly edited collection of brightly coloured couture looks.

In recent times, she's largely dominated the Nigerian bridal scene with the help of stylist Tosin Agboola (of the wardrobe manager).

Echoes of her excellent bridal creations were largely evident but updated: dense art-deco embroidery snaking around bodices and eventually morphing into necklines, sharp tailoring decorated by dangling beaded fringe, and figure-enhancing corsetry. She'll no doubt have more clients after such an enchanting presentation.

Ian Audifferen had a somewhat nomadic approach this season. With a venue that had installations of nostalgic dispositions, the collection aptly titled "nostalgia", was a celebration of the brand's 10th anniversary and as such, was a showcase of its greatest hits: deconstructed cotton shirting bifurcated with stripes of shocking neon colours, draped kaftans, and his best-seller slides of yore with fanned out tie as its decoration. Re: nostalgia; each guest had a care package placed on their seats. It contained memorabilia of a time past: speedy biscuits and robot bubble gum, reminders of fond memories, and simpler times, specifically the early aughts.

Banke Kuku

The Banke Kuku show was a floral fantasy.

Titled "Eden," guests were welcomed by several floral arrangements that decorated the venue and runway. That elaborate set idea also permeated the collection, which was a fusion of florals, embroidery, cutouts, her signature print silks, and draping.

Orange Culture

Always the show with the most hype around it, Adebayo Oke-Lawal's newest offering was disjointed. But in a good way. A model wore a tuxedo with its wide-legged pants pleated from the hip. Another wore a cyan-coloured crochet dress with a fringed hem. On another, a pleated champagne mini skirt was topped by an asymmetric t-shirt whose bust had been outlined by padding. They may seem like they're all dressed for different occasions, but they're definitely all heading to the same cool kids club.

With grand silhouettes fit for royalty, Ugo Monye delivered a collection that was rich in nigerian culture. It first began with tailored adire separates, then it morphed into the familiar military-inspired Monye territory, then transmogrified into a cacophonous juxtaposition of various heritages.

The wunderkind of fashion kicked off fashion week about five days early. the presentation was held at the concept store Alara, with guests that included Alara founder Reni Folawiyo, Eku Edewor, Nicole Chikwe, amongst others. Victor Anate, designer for Vicnate, stuck to all black looks which we've come to know him for, that were presented as if its wearer was in mourning: black silk scarves were tied around every head, and heels were ditched in favour of grounding flat sandals.

But there was still sex even in the grand monastic silhouettes. Busts had cutouts that were fetishtically done to reveal both cleavage and underboob. Draping invoked the work of madame grès. Two-tone sequins adorned a truly stunning one-shoulder gown.

Velvet, which is now a Vicnate signature, was shredded and tossed over a silk floor-length bodycon gown. The closing look was a simple white column dress that was accessorised with tons of white beads.

Imad Eduso

treated to an intimate dinner at Nok. The event was hosted by fashion entrepreneur, Zinna Anumudu, and they all got to know each other intimately, with Dami speaking more about her brand and her new collection titled "postcards from lagos", which some of the guests actually wore.

With a spectacular set made entirely of mylar intended to mimic the reflection of the sun hitting the ocean, the collection was called "oyor mmong"...a phrase whose origin is from akwa ibom state (where the designer's mother's roots are)...which literally translates to "child of water". The collection had fluid shapes cut from organza that resembled Mercury, bias cut tunics made from silks and crepes, and pleather... which was a new territory for the brand. In the end, he was met with a standing ovation when he came out to take his bow for a truly transporting show.

Ugo Monye

Ejiro Amos Tafiri

Ejiro's work is about consistency and steady evolution. recently turning 40 has perhaps lent her a directness and razor-sharp focus that eschews the need for newness in favour of perfecting craft. it is what keeps her customers coming. she showed no fewer than 80 looks, and it included menswear. she was size inclusive in her casting, and it included media personality Latasha Ngwube, and the stylist Tosin Ogundadegbe (of the style infidel). About the clothes, she just did all that she does but better: languid draping, kaftans cut from diaphanous layers of organza, and traditional embroidery.

Kayito is a fashion editor and celebrity stylist based in Lagos, Nigeria.

He studied Electrical Engineering at Covenant University, majoring in Information and Communication Technology. His work has been featured in Bellanaija, Malvie, Marie Claire, and Dazed Magazines.

He has a celebrity client list that includes Dakore Egbuson, Linda Ejiofor, Adesua Etomi, and Mercy Johnson. Kayito is also a self-proclaimed chocolate enthusiast.

The Lagos Fashion Week has ended, and as usual, the annual event featured a diverse collection of Spring Summer ‘24 Looks. Of note this year is how many more designers “now fully understand sustainability”. It was evident in the pieces that graced the runway; onsite and off.

This Fashion Week Special is your front-row ticket to witness the pulse of the fashion industry and embrace the ever-evolving tapestry of style, from known names and fast-rising designers.

So brace yourself for an edition of offsite shows and runway goodness.

The on-site shows were equally great, with a lot of refreshing sustainable brands creating their own signatures, Lila Bare made a runway debut with SS24 KOLAM - a carbon negative collection, Jewel Jemila, LFJ and Studio IMO also made a debut with thoroughly fascinating crotchet pieces. The Ladymaker, Kilentar, Kiko Romeo, Emmy Kasbit all presented a thoroughly great SS24 collection. Emmy Kasbit had the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu joined him to close the show.

It’s great to see fashion brands creating environmentally friendly pieces even more refreshing to see emerging fashion brands crafting sustainably conscious pieces.

ATAFO kicked off Fashion Week with a stellar show at the Convention Hall of the Eko Hotel & Suites sitting about 800 guests front row, meaning everyone in the room got a first-hand look at the debut SS24 collection ‘Sartorial Reverie’ which saw Mai Atafo’s take on sartorial tailoring meets chic meets functional sustainability.

Mai pays homage to his Edo roots infusing his own accents on traditional Edo looks. The collection features classic notes on looks for civil ceremonies for the timeless bride and groom.

Ejiro Amos Tafiri presented 80-plus looks at her offsite show. Her SS24 ‘Tapestry Tropicale’ Collection got a standing ovation from guests. Sisiano had an offsite show with a backdrop that mimicked the ocean, it was a delightful show.

Pepper Row, Ugo Monye, Elexiay, GETO, The Lady Maker, Lulla House, Rendoll, Cynthia Abila and others presented exciting pieces for their SS24. It was a good run…

ATAFO SS24 ‘Sartorial Reverie’ Collection

he Atafo Spring/Summer 2024 collection, titled "Sartorial Reverie," made its debut at Eko Hotel on October 24, 2024. It was the perfect night to kick off Lagos Fashion Week. For the grand showcase, Atafo collaborated with Schweppes, The Macallan, GAC, and Infinix.

This collection showcases Mai Atafo's appreciation for his heritage by incorporating stylish cultural references from Edo traditional attire with Atafo’s sartorial twist that celebrates ATAFO's innovation. The collection also features bridal designs for civil weddings, catering to both brides and grooms with classic looks.

Throughout the collection, a variety of fabrics are skillfully utilized, creating an engaging interplay. The menswear pieces display formal silhouettes inspired by ATAFO's signature designs like the ‘schaket’ and ‘tradxedo’. These iconic designs undergo reinterpretation in the womenswear line, taking on a more feminine approach. This new direction beautifully merges contemporary design sensibilities with the richness of traditional Nigerian style.

This season, ATAFO presents a collection that exemplifies the perfect blend of classic tailoring and contemporary style. With elegant garments tailored for various life occasions, both men and women can confidently embrace sophistication.

ATAFO's impeccable designs deserve to be recognized not only for their craftsmanship but also for the brilliant and creative way they are showcased. Guests at the show had the opportunity to experience his designs from the front row and get a close-up view of each piece, a first in Nigeria. They were able to fully immerse themselves in the stunning designs and observe the models up close as a result.

‘Oyor Mmuong’ Collection

isiano presented an SS24 ‘Oyor Mmuong’ offsite during Lagos Fashion Week. Oyor Mmuong according to the creative director was born out of a need to create a message. Just like the meaning of the collection ‘Child of Water’, each piece in the collection has a message tied to it.

According to the designer Sisiano Paolo “Oyor Mmuong is inspired by my playful innocence and love of the ocean, with a focus on the connection of the human spirit and water.

The collection explores the complexities that make water such a powerful element in our daily lives. It looks at the beauty of the sea, the threats to the world within, whilst glistening off the countless mirror-like facets that exist in small waves and ripples”.

The choice of fabric and the cut out in each piece comes with an intentionality. According to Sisiano “The fabric used, speaks to the complexities of water that are forever taken for granted. The cutouts on the cotton show the negative impact on the sea, The sheen of the silk and organza is a representation of the treasures hidden within. The general movement reminds us of the chaotic flow of life as mirrored by the delicate nature of the ocean” The last detail to note in this collection is the print as it is said to reference the depth of the sea without void. The print also includes the Sisiano signature hand-dying technique.

Shaping The Future Of

FASHION

W

ith each passing year, the estimated value of the African fashion industry continues to explode. Despite the absence of a properly structured industry, African brands and designers are continually innovating and bringing to the market a unique experience from product offerings to their brand positioning.

According to UNESCO, The African fashion industry is currently valued at $15.5 billion worth of exports annually; with the potential to triple over the next decade given the right infrastructures and investments.

Regardless of the setbacks, like the formidable Nigerian spirit; fashion brands and designers are slugging it out to stay afloat no matter the inflating cost and strain on business but interestingly there is also a rising demand for African fashion brands across the continent and the globe.

This fashion season saw more brands take control of their brand narrative for Lagos Fashion Week, seeing an influx of more independent shows than we've ever seen.

I had the great opportunity of working on what might go down as the biggest standalone show on the continent; for those not on Mai Atafo’s internet, I’m talking about the ATAFO Spring/ Summer ’24 show.

We’ve all seen the shows from across the globe throughout the years, the remarkable venues, the all-star guest lists, and the immersive experiences. If you’re like me with the true African dream, we’ve all hoped for more of the productions back home to be of a certain standard.

So to pull it off is one high I hope would last till the next feat.

Prioritizing the Customer

Mai Atafo’s decision to create a front-row experience for all his guests started last year when he decided to create experiences that prioritize the ATAFO customer.

Over a decade the ATAFO brand has stayed true to its commitment to embody the spirit of craftsmanship through an innovative approach to fashion; yielding a clientele with a distinct taste for quality.

This meant with each new collection, the desire to have them see the craftsmanship that went into each garment as well as present the pieces in an immersive experience that showed the depth of thought that went into each design.

Following a hiatus in 2019, having previously showcased in Lagos, Paris, New York, and South Africa amongst others the brand’s decision to create its own experience brought a new sense of accessibility for the ATAFO clientele.

The ATAFO clientele is a robust list that transcends targeted marketing. From your African HNIs to celebrities, to the aspirational new couple who saved up for their dream ATAFO wedding looks, who do you seemingly prioritize for a “front row” experience given fashion's standards? As every customer to us is just as important.

This approach led us to deliver last season's collection in our first standalone show to a 400+ front-row seated audience.

Intention and Creativity

highlighted the creative vibrancy of the Chief creative director; Mai Atafo.

Sponsorship played a huge role; For the most part music, food and fitness always seem to pull the big bucks; convincing brands to see what we were trying to do took months of pitching and trying to find the right brand fit in values so we could tell a seamless story: We had hand-painted pieces on the runway, and at the entrance we had Dricky the artist who painted the clothes paint a GAC car in real time. We were going to have all the guests mingle in a welcome area before the show started; The Macallan to bring the true spirit with the whiskey cocktails, Schweppes to encourage the social interaction and Infinix to capture the moments in the space.

The actual runway fashion conveyed the brand’s present; the logo mania in celebration of over a decade of ATAFO, The creative director and founder's root in the Edo heritage-inspired looks and the focus on weddings from the lens of the civil celebration; a testament to where true values lie.

The music was scored to precision; Producer Bigfoot curated the segments of the show, infusing ad-libs that resonated with the logo mania and sounds that tired the inspirations cohesively together The guests, all 800 plus people each individually invited to a front-row viewing at the most prestigious venue in the country.

This year, the goal of ATAFO’s SS ‘24 show was to immerse the guests in Mai Atafo’s headspace; the fusion of his love for fashion and music; his ever-present ties to his Edo roots and celebration of his journey through building a foremost leading fashion brand on the continent.

Every touch point was intentional

“How do you make a brand statement?” We didn't ask ourselves this question but the show definitely answered it. By moving with intention.

We intentionally crafted what was important to us as a brand; The customer.

As we look to the future, I hope that the industry can draw valuable lessons from ATAFO's journey, embracing innovation, authenticity and customer-centricity as we all continue to play our parts in shaping the vibrant and diverse landscape of African fashion ATAFO’s legacy stands as a testament to the limitless possibilities within the ever-expanding realm of African fashion.

We decided what aspects of the brand’s spirit we wanted to share; The constant desire to elevate both our approach to garment making and overall create a tailored brand experience, which we delivered in a unique way that

This approach highlights the importance of individually elevating the overall fashion experience through intentional collaborations, creativity and an unwavering focus on customers. This will in return elevate the African fashion narrative on a global stage.

range Culture returns to Lagos Fashion Week after a 2-year hiatus.

This collection according to the designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal was one of his hardest collections, the collection took him on an introspective journey, questioning his love for everything and his journey so far.

While creating this collection, Adebayo went through different phases of emotions and came to the conclusion that ‘it is okay to question and to fall in and out of love once in a while, to feel drained and to re-energize and step right up again’. Hence the birth of the title of the collection.

According to Adebayo “It comes in waves really is about celebrating a realistic journey with one's path - it's about celebrating the waves - in the calm and in the storm and allowing yourself feel it in its fullness even when it breaks you down, as that is the only way you can build right up again for the highs that come.

This collection helped me celebrate resilience in the storm and seeing the beauty in coming out into the calm and experiencing the calm more excitedly after every storm” Each piece, composed of different fabrics like silk, crepe, denim, cotton, organza and more, captures in a bud the emotions the designer tried to convert when creating it.

HOUSE OF MARVEE SS24 ‘The Playground’ Collection

ouse of Marvee debuted its SS24 Collection, "The Playground," at the Pier Habour Penthouse. It tied nicely given it took place on the final day of Lagos Fashion Week, The event was a delightful experience.

The penthouse was transformed into a fashion playground, with the gallery arranged in a way that allowed guests to get a closeup look and feel of the designs. The gathering was intimate, and attended by fashion enthusiasts and insiders like Mai Atafo, Debbie Bjuku, VeekeyJames, Derin from Isale Eko, Chioma Ikoku, Ifeoma Odoqwu, StyledbySeun, Wumi Tuase, Dipo Ayo-Adeusi, Adesomoo, and many others.

Because of the intimate setting, Creative Director Marvy Joma had the opportunity to engage in personal conversations with guests, discussing the intricate details of each design born from a place of empowerment; giving women very stylish pieces to show up beautifully for themselves while standing strong in their femininity.

The presentation guided the guests through the entire journey, starting from the initial idea to the final editorial. Marvy Joma shared her inspiration, explaining that the collection was created to empower women. The goal was to provide women with stylish pieces that allow them to express their beauty and embrace their femininity while also exuding strength.

Each piece in the collection was a meticulous celebration of intricate detailing and handwork, with the majority of the pieces crafted with hand-embellished beads. The pieces featured a mix of meticulous beading and handwoven fabric. They were displayed on mannequins as well as real-life models giving guests a live feel of the pieces.
