Kate Henshaw is called “The Institution”.
A name that originated from Nollywood actor Uche Jumbo that she’s also seeking the meaning of, but I think I can take a wild guess… At 51 and with a career spanning 30 years, Kate Henshaw is a force. She’s that and more, alright?
Kate Henshaw; Aunty Kate, as we fondly call her, is a delight. Her energy is infectious; it’s unreal how she lights up the space with the sweetest smile.
SHey there, welcome! omething about consistency needs to be studied. Especially for those who simply want to get the job done without the noise. I was reminded again by Aunty Kate when we were chatting for her cover interview. By now, you know “THE Kate Henshaw” is our cover personality. She holds so much power and influence, but she’s managed to stay grounded and disciplined even though she’s a force.
You can easily be profiled based on your choice of outfit, according to the enclothed cognitive concept, which states that we are the systematic influence of clothes on our psychological processes and behavioural tendencies. In this edition, we'll try to figure out...

With about 30 years in the Nollywood industry under her belt. She is indeed one to be studied. She’s not called “The Institution” for nothing. She’s paid her dues, and fabulously so; making the bank and she’s a worthy role model. I like how vocal she is as well! She could talk about politics all day! A member of the Federal Republic's Order (MFR).
I recall "planning" how to keep the energy up during her shoot after my publisher mentioned that music does it for her, and everyone agreed. Then Aunty Kate saunters in, full of energy, and the room goes wild! She comes in looking stunning in a black mesh top revealing a sports bra and black leggings, looking unbelievably good and fit! She hugged everyone with genuine smiles and kept the energy up until the end of the shoot.
I hope you enjoy her interview and the daring shoot as much as I did.
This week's edition is packed with all your favourite bits, as usual, and don't miss Dr Ikunna's conversation about diabetes.

On June 7th, 2023, BKuniquehair welcomed members of the press, friends, and colleagues to their headquarters in Sleek Mall, Victoria Island, to unveil their new luxury hair collaboration with award-winning A-list actress Rita Dominic.
Mrs Blessing Kenneth, CEO of BKUniquehair, was joined by awardwinning actress Rita Dominic to showcase the new collection, which features Rita's signature big curly hair and afro styles but also caters to customers who prefer straight or wavy hairstyles.
This is not the first time Rita Dominic and BKUnique Hair have collaborated; her first collaboration with the brand was successful in 2016, with an exclusive luxury human hair collection that included a number of Rita's signature hairstyles. Rita also donated the proceeds from the sales to cancer research and treatment for cancer patients in treatment. Rita stated that she enjoyed working with the brand because their values aligned, particularly the time and effort to ensure that the best quality 100% human hair is selected from various parts of the world such as India, Peru, and Brazil. Mrs. Blessing also mentioned how much she enjoyed working with Rita because of her incredible personality, professionalism, and impact.
Guests were offered 50% off gift cards to shop the collection. Among those in attendance were reality star Mercy Eke, television personality Kaylah Oniwo, beautypreneur Nnenna Okoye, and actress Gbubemi Ejeye.
BK Unique Hair Inc. debuted in the hair care industry with skin wefts in 2008 and was fully launched in Canada in 2011. "Through unwavering passion, commitment, and dedication, we have evolved as one of the top hair extension providers in North America and internationally," Mrs. Kenneth said.
TTime is a funny element. While you have a lot of things you need to accomplish, time keeps going; it really waits for no one. When we focus on the things we have to achieve, we might lose sight of the people around us and the relationships in our lives. A study by the National Library of Medicine in 2016 found that the maximum number of social connections for both men and women occurs around the age of 25. But as young adults settle into careers and prioritize romantic relationships, those social circles rapidly shrink, and friendships tend to take a back seat. We will be sharing with you in this article the beauty of feeding into your friendship the same way you build other aspects of your life. While some people believe they do not need friends as they could be a liability, some people believe man should not be an island and people progress in life with the relationships they have built. If you fall into the latter category, then you should definitely read this.
Friends make up a huge part of most people's lives, but over time, friendships can fade and people can drift apart if the friendship isn’t maintained. This could be as a result of many things like relocation, having different interests, not keeping up with the friendship, or simply just falling apart. Fostering and putting effort into certain friendships is key to making sure those relationships stay strong and close. Some people have achieved this and have life long friends and if you want same here are the things you should do;
1. Check up on your friends regularly
One of the simple ways to intentionally cultivate your friendship is by keeping in touch with your friends. Make time to call them and check up on them, scheduling them in your calendar if you are the type to easily forget
things once they are not in your calendar. Set aside time to hang out with them, visit them at home, or invite them to your home.
2. Small gestures
Little things done to your friends go a long way and build memories down the line. It could be messages, complimenting them, celebrating their achievements like they were yours, remembering the important days in their lives and celebrating them with them, getting gifts for them that they would actually use, or even offering your time and service to a cause important to them. This gesture communicates your commitment to the friendship and how much you value it.
3. Understanding their love language
This does not just apply to the person you are romantically involved with; everyone has that love language that they appreciate, and acting on their love language saves you time doing other things that they might not really appreciate.
4. Respecting any phase they are in and choices they make
Just like you, as time passes and you experience different parts of the world, you might begin to grow into another version of yourself and make certain decisions. Your friends are no different, there is beauty in differences, and so their dreams and aspirations do not have to impact the friendship as long as those decisions do not affect you negatively.
5. Respectfully resolve conflicts
Managing conflicts in friendship is a vital skill because even the best of friendships are likely to hit a bump in the road. If you don’t resolve the conflict, you might lose a very dear friend. Whether it’s between you and someone else or between two of your friends, do your best to
resolve conflicts. Make sure you do it without any judgment. The key to that is to take each person’s perspective. That’s very important. Each person needs to share how they see the conflict from their own perspective, and you, as someone who needs to resolve it, should listen to every side.
6. Correct with love
Tough love does not need to come with tough words; correcting your friend should not build more animosity in them or make them feel less. Always look for ways to make your friends understand you have their best interests at heart. You are allowed to criticize your friends; however, make sure your criticisms are understandable, honest, and helpful. Never use hurtful words and comments. They’re needless and cruel.
7. Celebrate your friendship
Friendship is one of the most valuable treasures in life. It's a bond that can be cherished, nurtured, and celebrated in many ways. Celebrating your friendship allows you to show your appreciation for the people who have been there for you through thick and thin, providing support, comfort, and joy along the way. Celebrating your friendship not only strengthens the bonds between you and your friend but also brings positivity and happiness into your life. It's a time to reflect on all the good times you've shared and to look forward to all the exciting things yet to come. So, don't hesitate to celebrate your friendship and let your friends know how much they mean to you.
Finally, making a conscious effort to cultivate and strengthen your friendships can have a multitude of benefits. When you intentionally invest time and energy into building these relationships, you are able to create more meaningful connections with the people in your life.
You can easily be profiled based on your choice of outfit, according to the enclothed cognitive concept, which states that we are the systematic influence of clothes on our psychological processes and behavioural tendencies. In this edition, we'll try to figure out your fashion style based on the predominant clothing styles and even colour choices in your closet.
What you wear can inform passersby of your type of employment as well as your ambitions, emotions, and spending habits. Your clothing choices can reveal more about you than just your personal style. In fact, what you wear can communicate a lot about your profession, aspirations, mood, and even your financial situation. Clothes have the power to send subtle (or not-so-subtle) messages to those around us. Whether we are conscious of it or not, our clothing choices can speak volumes about who we are and what we value.
If your clothing collection consists primarily of dresses featuring an abundance of floral prints, soft hues, and charming embellishments such as pastel pinks, gentle lavenders, delicate laces, ruffles, and flowy skirts, then you have a definite penchant for feminine style. You most likely like to be treated as a lady; you could also be regarded as a lovergirl.
If your wardrobe mainly consists of comfortable, simple items such as baggy jeans, sweatpants, and oversized shirts, it's safe to say that you prioritize comfort above all else. You may often find yourself repeating the mantra of having nothing to wear for fancy occasions because your outfits are geared more towards everyday wear than dressing up. The fancy items that may exist in your wardrobe were likely gifted to you rather than purchased by yourself. While you may admire those who dress up in elaborate outfits, this is not your personal style. Your mantra is to prioritize comfort above all else, and as a result, you opt for more relaxed attire.
If your wardrobe consists mostly of suits, work pants, skirts, and other professional attire, then you might be considered part of the working class. This suggests that you have little time for leisure activities, and your daily routine is likely centered around work and home, with occasional trips to the store for household necessities. As the person who appears at both church and social events in formal wear, it is likely that you are always in a hurry to return home for work or prepare for the following day.
There are individuals who aren't afraid to make bold fashion choices, and they're known as Stand-Outs. These people enjoy wearing clothing that makes a statement, such as bold prints and striking colours. Their clothing exudes confidence and a strong presence.
Staying on top of the latest fashion styles and trends can be a challenge, but not for you. You effortlessly flaunt the latest styles as if walking down a runway, making every day feel like a fashion show. People often seek out your fashion advice, and your outfit steals the spotlight at any event you attend. You are the epitome of glamour and style, turning any occasion into a glitzy affair.
Have you considered what your wardrobe says about your sense of style? Is this the image you want to convey?

Kate Henshaw is called “The Institution”.
A name that originated from Nollywood actor Uche Jumbo that she’s also seeking the meaning of, but I think I can take a wild guess… At 51 and with a career spanning 30 years, Kate Henshaw is a force. She’s that and more, alright?
Kate Henshaw; Aunty Kate, as we fondly call her, is a delight. Her energy is infectious; it’s unreal how she lights up the space with the sweetest smile. Starting her acting career in the East per chance, thanks to the late JT Tom West, she auditioned rather ‘unseriously’, modeled, and all this with a background in science, but the film industry chose her, and she’s been thriving, making the bank, being fit, and being fabulous. She continues to have an exciting career several years later, an activist who can talk politics all day. In 2011, she was named a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by the Nigerian federal government. You get to find out all this and more in this delightful, -if I do say so myself- interview.
We know you from way back, and you're still here. You're still setting the bar. How did you get here? What are you doing that has kept you relevant to this day? don't know. Na God na abi, what will I say? How would I answer this kind of question?
*Laughs*.
II guess, being a professional, first and foremost, I'm a professional in anything that I do. I give a hundred percent, the way I feel in my heart. I just move. I don't know how to put it in words. - Like, especially this fitness thing that has, you know, taken me to another level, totally unexpected, even for me, that it's become a huge thing. But one thing I know is that, as a professional who is committed to your craft, people will always see that and want to work with you. That, for me, is more lasting than being a flash in the pan. If you're a professional, you're good at your job, you try to improve yourself, and all of that will keep you in good stead. Humility, discipline, professionalism—yeah, it goes a long way.
You are called the institution! What’s the gist behind this?
Hey, it's Uche! Uche Jumbo. You need to call her on the phone and ask her. You know, every time she says, "The institution”, she says, Kate, you need to be studied. I think to answer that question, you need to call Uche on the phone and ask her why. It would be good to hear why she calls me that. That's the assignment for you. Please do. It would be nice. *laughs*
We know you have a science background. So why did you choose acting?
It happened to me. I graduated in medical microbiology from the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Luth Idi Araba, by the way. I used to model. You know how you meet people; you have interactions, and connections. I used to be a runway model. I used to be a calendar model. I shot my very
DON'T COME FOR FAME. DON'T COME AND SAY, I WANT TO BE A STAR. I HATE THOSE WORDS. I MEAN, IT MIGHT HAPPEN; YOU'D BE A STAR, BUT THEN HOW DO YOU SUSTAIN IT? SUSTAINABILITY. MAINTENANCE. IT'S WHERE THE WORK IS.
first TV commercial in 1994 for Shield deodorant. So I met people, and that was when I met the late JT Tom West. May his soul rest in peace. He's the one who invited me to my very first audition. I had no idea what an audition was. I asked him, and when he said, "Let's go for an audition”, I was like, "What does that mean? What is it?” but I was inquisitive. Being inquisitive also helps you in life when you venture out and want to find out what's going on. Before you know it, it’s something that you fall in love with. I went for my first audition, and like they say, the rest is history. And here I am, 30 years later. My goodness. It's scary. That somebody's lifetime!
Aunty Kate You are driven; one can tell from the outside looking in; we see your personality. It definitely cannot be something you just wear because people speak highly of you professionally. We see everything you've done in production and all of that. How have you been able to achieve this? How do you balance everything? You being your playful self, “energy goddess”, and then you being professional at what you do I mean, the popular saying goes, "You can't give what you don't have”. This is true. Nothing remains elsewhere. You know, energy is very important to me. Energy. The people I associate myself with—I mean, I'm at that age and stage where I don't want negative vibes. You know, for the rest of my life, I want to live it the way I want to live it. With joy, happiness, and joie de vivre, like the French people say. Convivial, I want that when I walk into a room, everyone is like, "Yay! You know, energy. Energy is very, very important. To start your day, and you can't give what you don't have. You can't. And I'm all about laughter. When it's time to be serious, be serious. I don't suffer fools gladly. I'm sorry. I don't like lateness. I just don't like people who are disorganized. It messes with my head. That's it.
What keeps you going?
The fact that God wakes me up every day. That's another chance to just try. I try not to stay down too long. Not that I'm up, up, up all the time. Like yesterday, I was a bit down. A friend lost her husband. But by the time I got home, I just put on some music. In my house, I have speakers from top to bottom. I make sure music is in the air. It does a lot for your mental attitude. You know, for everything. Whether you want to meditate, put on some slow music. You want energy; go, go, go. You know you want some jazz. Just surround yourself with what you surround yourself with. The people you surround yourself with have a huge impact on you as a person. When they say, "Show me your friend, and I'll tell you who you are”. It's true. It is so true. What you surround yourself with and what you let yourself breathe in. So important.
You've been really active in making political statements. You're very vocal. You've been at the fore of very strong conversations. Are you looking to go into politics?
I already did. In 2014. I've already tried. But just let people know that. The office of the citizen is the highest office. Higher than even that of the president. No apologies. Because these are the people who came to you and said they wanted your votes. They want to serve you. How did they turn out to be taskmasters? And you are the ones serving them. We need to hold public leaders accountable. We ourselves, the followers, the citizens, need to do better. Because when we do better and know better, we can't ask for
better.
If you don't know what you deserve, you can't ask for it. Because then you always lessen your worth. But Nigeria is a place where we've come to accept the very minimal or the bare minimum as something to celebrate. No. We have leaders who travel. We travel. We see how other countries are. We are so blessed. So blessed. Our multi-tribal, multi-cultural, multi-religious is a place of strength. Not a weakness. And not something to be used against us.
If we recognize that we are Nigerians first, human beings first, before your tribe, then, I mean, I've always grown up in Nigeria. I don't hate Igbo. I don't hate any tribe. I served in Bauchi. My Nollywood career started in the East. You know? So what are we talking about? We ourselves need to be open and just be wise enough to know that this country is all for us. For our children. Now, everybody's child is away. They're going to have generations from now who will not know Nigeria as their place of birth or where they come from. They're going to claim other countries. Meanwhile, they originated here. You know? So, we just need to do better. I know it's not too late. We can still work at it. But we need to work at it ourselves as well.
You’re a fitness buff, obviously; we saw a lot of what you did today (at the photoshoot). What tips can you share with us lazy people?
First and foremost, your mindset has to be ready. I always say your body won't go where your mind doesn't take it. If you're not mentally ready, forget it. If you're not ready, forget it. I would say start slowly. Start with something you love. Don't go in all like, "Oh, I have three months to lose this weight”. You will fall flat on your face. Because when you do it, it will be hard to get up. Make it a progression. Make it something you can sustain. And please do not starve yourself. You need food. You need energy. There's nothing wrong with intermittent fasting. There's nothing wrong with dieting. But you have to back it up with exercise. With stretches, yoga, and pilates. Not only gym. Walking, squats. There's so much you can do. There is so much information out there. That if you do and truly want, you can have a fit lifestyle. Which will help you when you're older. Like me. I'm telling you. It will help you.
So when you're not acting and actively participating in giving back activities, like being at fitness places, encouraging people and individuals, and being a role model, what else do you do? How do you unwind?
I hang with my friend Rita Reedee (Rita Dominic-Anosike). Sometimes when she's around, but she's almost never around. I hang out with her. I also like spa treats a lot. I can do massage every week. I love massages. I love going out to lounges to relax and dance.
there's music, I must dance. I'm not one of those who goes out and is seated on a chair. No. I'll be the only one on the floor since the rest of you don't like good music. I'll be the only one on the dance floor. And then I relax. I watch TV and movies. Listen to music. Read a book or two. That's it. That's how I unwind.
So with everything so far—your career, your business, your life, everything in between—do you have regrets?
It's good you asked this question. You know, as I woke up yesterday and this morning, I said to myself, Kate, you've done well. You've done well. You've not done badly for yourself at all. You are not going to measure yourself by other people's standards. Some people have big corporations. Some are gunning for different things. But we all have different directions and different paths in life. And I have no regrets whatsoever. Whatever has happened in my life, it's all been tests, testimonies, and life's lessons. And I'm running my own race the way I know and see fit. I'm not looking to the left or the right. I've done very well. And if anything should happen now, I'm going to nod my head and say, Kate, I was here. You were here.
I skipped the question. To anyone looking to make a name in the movie industry and stay for a while. I mean, just like you've shown everybody that it's possible, do you have tips for them?
Don't come for fame. Don't come and say, I want to be a star. I hate those words. I
mean, it might happen; you'd be a star, but then how do you sustain it? Sustainability. Maintenance. It's where the work is. You come with your shoulders in the air; you don't have respect for those who come before you; that's a pet peeve of mine. I'm sorry. You don't have respect for those that come before you; you don't greet; you are not willing to be taught. It's not going to last, and it's not a curse. You need to watch those who came before you who are still in the game and still relevant. I don't need to mention names; you can check. Come for the love of the craft; come to learn; even I learn every day. I remember Uncle Olu saying to me, “ Be willing to learn and to better yourself”. See what is being done out there—the practices. I've done stage, TV, and film. Sorry, I'm calling Rita's (Rita Domninic Anosike) name; she has done stage, TV, and films as well. And so many other people that I can call. That's why I watch movies. I watch other actors in Hollywood, and Bollywood; I want to see how they're doing it. I love Viola Davis so much. I love her. She's someone I love. Lately, JLo, I am seeing her comic side; you know, there are two movies of hers I've watched; this woman is actually very funny. She's a strong woman. I love Tracee Ellis Ross, and I love Charlize Theron. She's got a long, lean look. I love it. There are so many of them like that that I really like. Top of my list is Angela Bassett at 60-something. You see, we are following her. You know, these are people who have been in the game. They're still there. There's something that they're doing right. They are conscientious about their work. They don't mess around with their job. They don't feel as if they have a right that everybody should kowtow and bow to them. No. Have a teachable spirit. Being able to learn is, for me, the best thing ever.
So away from the industry now, although you may not realize it, many of us look up to you as a role model. What tips do you have for us? I know this is old school, but please learn to keep some parts of yourself private. It's important. You know, there's
so much peer pressure now. So, I can sort of understand what's going on, especially on the internet, with putting all of your life out there. Choose what you put out. Because at the end of the day, that's what they're going to use to judge you. Learn to separate the private from the public. You know? It's extremely important. And be yourself. Don't be afraid to be different. Don't follow trends or the crowd. Stay in your lane! People don't like to mind their own lane. Don't be afraid to be yourself. To be authentic. Because everyone else is taken. Be you. If you are the black speck of rice inside the white rice, you will stand out. If you're looking the same, what's different about you? How do you separate yourself from the rest? How? How am I going to see you? Unless you're doing something different, scream if you want to. Come in with your bald, shaved head. Stand out. Simple.Stand out. Be yourself. People are so fake. Social media encourages you to do more than you can sustain. I can never do that. I dance to encourage myself. That's how I am in the gym and everything. I am so glad that I grew up in a time when there was no pressure. There were no phones. OG before IG. And you can do it now. You can filter. Phones are like drugs; studies have shown that people spend more time on their phones. Even on the road. It’s addictive. you forget. You don't even know. You spend three hours on your phone. Time has gone by. So for me, I do my post. I answer comments. Then I move on to other things. In the evening, when I have time, I come back to it. I time my posts and my responses. No, I have to do all that. I'm here for this shoot. Have you seen me press the phone? This is important.
Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body does not use insulin properly, which leads to high blood glucose. A high blood glucose level can cause considerable damage to the body. Most people know someone with type 2 diabetes, as diabetes is common.
Global statistics have shown that about 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, which continues to increase. Most people will not know they have type 2 diabetes for several years because they may not develop any symptoms of diabetes.
Pre-diabetes is a condition that leads to type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a warning sign that one has a substantial risk of getting diabetes. Detecting prediabetes and taking appropriate action can delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Reversion is key because type 2 diabetes is a complex and devastating illness that can harm multiple organs in the body.
Who is at risk?
People with prediabetes do not have symptoms; testing is the only way to detect it. It is crucial to understand the risk factors for diabetes and get tested if you are at risk.
You are at elevated risk of developing diabetes if you are over 25 years old and black or Asian; if you have a parent or sibling with diabetes; or if you are overweight or carry excess weight around the belly. It is important to know that being at risk does not mean you will develop type 2 diabetes.
How do you know if you have prediabetes?
There are tests available for screening for prediabetes. One of the greatest challenges in practice is awareness and the willingness to pay for the tests. There seems to be a battle over the opportunity cost of paying for a test. There seems to be an under-appreciation of the value of screening (testing) for diabetes, and other long-term conditions when there are no current symptoms. Healthcare professionals see patients who decline to have tests because of cost while kitted out with high-end luxury accessories. People must see screening as an investment in their health.
The first step is to know the risk factors. There are online websites where you can calculate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as the Diabetes UK website: https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start. People who have a moderate to elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes should have a blood test to assess the risk further.
The most common test used is the HbA1c, which gives us an indication of the average blood glucose level in the past 12 weeks.
A normal Hba1c is below 42 mmol; in prediabetes, the Hba1c is between 42 and 47 mmol; and diabetes is diagnosed when the Hba1c is 48 or higher.
How do you avoid and reverse prediabetes?
Age and family history cannot be changed, but making lifestyle changes can reverse pre-diabetes and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Everyone with prediabetes needs to act now. Even modest changes can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes in some
people.
There is no special diet for preventing type 2 diabetes. The aim is to eat a healthy and balanced diet. A diet consists of both food and drink. One should review the sugar content of drinks, as alcohol and juices contain a considerable amount of sugar. The aim is to reduce the quantity of carbohydrate (carb) intake and select healthier carbs. The African diet is carbohydrate-heavy, so cutting the portion size of fufu, yam, beans, and rice will reduce the quantity of carbs. This could also mean choosing boiled instead of fried yam. Plates should look green, as seen in a Mediterranean diet, versus the African diet. More importantly, do not eat to the point that you are full or overfull, but eat till you are 80% full.
Being more active can also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is not essential to join a gym, but one can change their daily routine. For example, use steps instead of lifts, walking around your neighbourhood area. Being active has many other benefits: including reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease and improving mental well-being and self-confidence.
Eating a healthy diet and being more active will help manage weight. And although weight loss is a crucial strategy, not everyone needs to lose a massive amount of weight, as minor changes can help prevent diabetes. If you are
overweight or obese, losing 5% of your body weight can reduce your risk of developing diabetes.
Bottom line
Prediabetes increases one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Being at risk does not mean one will develop type 2 diabetes. It is possible to reverse prediabetes with lifestyle changes.
One of the challenges to bringing down prediabetes is identifying who has it. Have you taken a test for prediabetes in the past year? Do not wait for the onset of symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Take a test now.

While we understand that aging is a definite part of life, if given a secret potent to slow down aging, we bet many people will be in line for it. One truthful statement about our melanin complexion is “black don’t crack”. This is especially true if you know how to take care of yourself using the right methods.
When you start aging naturally, your skin starts getting thinner and drier, losing its elasticity, becoming less firm, and developing wrinkles, among other things. However, as blacks, you should probably note that darker skin has more melanin, and melanin has properties that protect us from those UV rays. This not only reduces our risk of unsightly wrinkles but also decreases our risk of skin cancer compared to people with fair skin. In this edition, we will be dishing out tips you might not be aware of about natural ways to slow down the telling of your age.

Like they say, health is wealth; if you have the habit of smoking, then you probably should quit. Smoking is very effective in greatly speeding up how quickly your skin ages. It causes wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion. Eat a well and balanced diet, regardless of your life activities. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin aging. Consuming a lot of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging, too. Also, moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system. This, in turn, may give the skin a more-youthful appearance. Reduce your alcohol intake because alcohol is rough on the skin. It dehydrates the skin and, over time, damages it. This can make us look older.

Ensure you have a clean and moisturized face and body before retiring to bed and before setting out every day. Having moisturized skin keeps your skin hydrated and younger which slows down the aging process. For men the routine might be different but the most essential part is to have a routine to take care of your body and skin, be intentional with the kind of products you use, and actively make use of your sunscreen. For women ensure that all traces of makeup is taken off your face and have a wash routine, not only does this calm you but also gives a face a natural refreshing lift. You need to note that except recommended by your dermatologist, do not use a product that burns your skin, this dries out the skin and ends up aging it faster.
Avoid having a fixed expression; having a fixed expression arguably conditions the muscles under your skin to adopt that position, and it contours the skin to have that fixed. If you continue to have a sunken or sullen expression for years, this can lead to your face having a permanent droopy look.

AVOID THE HARMFUL SUNLIGHT
Getting exposure to sunlight in the morning can help you sleep at night because it helps reset your body's inner "sleep clock." Light is an important cue for your body's sleep cycle. The light you are exposed to during the day helps your body figure out when it's time to go to bed (and when it's time to wake up), but you have to be careful not to expose yourself to harmful light. UVB rays cause a much greater risk of skin cancer than UVA rays, but UVA rays cause aging, wrinkling, and loss of elasticity. UVA also increases the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts. Avoid going into the sun without sunscreen and without glasses to help prevent your eyes from squinting and creating wrinkles around your eyes.
It is critical to understand that your body and every part of it operate like machines, and for you to get the most out of them, you need to have them rest, do regular checkups, and refrain from exerting the body. Every single part of you needs to rest so it can properly function. You can ensure this by having a proper sleep pattern, wearing protective glasses if you stare at the screen a lot, resting at intervals, meditating, dancing, smiling a lot, having a calculated time set aside to detoxify, and practicing general self care.
It is not too late to start on these pointers; any attempt made will surely be impactful and reduce any issues already present. There have been testimonies of people who stopped or cut down on some unhealthy habits and saw a lot of improvement in their skin.
( that is if inflammatory, cystic or acne scars are involved)
Some of the non-surgical procedures are listed below, but there is room for combination treatment most times:
A medical grade chemical peel - This is also known as chemoexfoliation. There are combination chemical peels that can address both acne and skin discoloration at the same time. The number of sessions is dependent on the severity and the patient’s adherence to instructions.
A laser- this helps kill the bacteria that causes acne in most cases. It also stimulates the production of new collagen, which therefore leads to skin repair. Laser treatment is usually not done in isolation, and care should be taken when used on individuals with dark skin.
Acne facials, hydrafacials, and Microdermabrasion - These are not medical grade procedures, but routine treatment of these procedures can go a long way.
7. There is a notion that using acids like niacinamide, lactic, hyaluronic, glycolic, etc. can age or negatively impact the skin later in the future. Is there any truth to this and how can one avoid future damage?
This is absolutely untrue. Yes, they are called acids, but they do not harm the skin in any way. These cosmetic ingredients do everything but cause damage to the skin, whether immediate or long term.
1. What is your go to advice for skincare maintenance and improvement?
A go-to regimen is dependent on the age of the individual, their skin type (dry, oily, or sensitive), and if they have any current skin concerns. But to achieve optimum skin health, one should have a dedicated, personalized morning and evening skin care regimen. A basic morning routine may consist of a cleanser (containing an Alpha hydroxy acid), a toner (which normalizes the PH of the skin), and a good moisturizer, along with any sunscreen with a spf 30+ and above. A nighttime routine will include all the above, excluding the sun screen, but retinol is definitely recommended as it has good antiaging properties.
2. Is there a skin care method to slow down aging signs in the face?
Retinol is a good anti-aging agent because it increases skin cell proliferation, exfoliates the skin and boosts collagen production which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles Vit C is also an antioxidant, which helps mop up free radicals that cause skin aging. It thereby reduces the appearance of redness, fine lines, and wrinkles, especially on the face. Addressing skin aging topically is a good option, but there are also other factors at play intrinsically when it comes to skin aging: good genes, a well balanced diet, exercising, maintenance of a good metal state, and a reduced stress level.
3. There is this long-time belief that skincare is a feminine practice, can you give reasons why men should also take skincare seriously Everyone (men and women inclusive) undergoes the aging process, so men should take skin care seriously too. When it comes to skin care, men have traditionally kept it simple; however, more men are now pursuing healthier and younger looking skin. A healthy skin care routine will help them reduce the appearance of wrinkles and prevent future ones from appearing. When it comes to women, it seems like skin care practices are more common because:
• Women undergo hormonal fluctuations during puberty and pregnancy
• There is also a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, and one of the features of this condition is acne.
• Women wear a lot of make up and they need a systematic cleansing process to get rid of all of the make up and dirt to keep their skin clear of blemishes. All of these conditions result in acne in one
way or another, and hence a skin care regimen is needed to address this.
4. How important is diet in skin maintenance, and what class of meal would you advise more consumption of?
A well balanced diet is definitely encouraged. Nourishing the body with the right nutrients and adequate water helps promote better skin health. Some of these nutrients include vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and selenium. If you ingest the right amount of nutrients for good skin health, you will have very little need to use a lot of skin care products.
Vitamins A,C and E act as anti-oxidants
Proteins- the body produces collagen through the protein molecules it obtains from one’s diet Dark chocolate is high in flavonoids and help prevent the skin from sun damage and improves skin hydration
Tomatoes contain lycopene that help prevent the skin against ultraviolet radiation
Foods to avoid include:
Sugar- It increases the amount of advanced glycation end products (this slows down the removal of old collagen from the body). Decreased collagen turnover is responsible for wrinkle formation
Diary products
Caffeine intake
Over indulgence on alcohol
5. Does wearing makeup every day really wear out the skin, or is the skincare after makeup removal more important? Makeup does not wear out the skin; however, it is advisable to allow the skin to breathe every now and then. You can wear make up all week during the weekdays and go make up free during the weekend. I know sometimes we are so tired after a hard day's work that we do not have time to take off our makeup.
The skin renews itself at night while we are asleep, so not taking off make up slows down this process. Sleeping with make up on also clogs the skin pores, which could lead to the buildup of dirt on the face, which in turn leads to acne.
The trapping of dirt can lead to the accumulation of dead cells on the surface, making the skin look dull and lackluster.
6. What type of non-surgical procedure would you recommend from people battling heavy acne and discoloration of the skin
Treatment of acne usually requires a multimodal approach as there are different etiological factors. The type of acne involved also helps determine what kind of treatment
Niacinamide - It is a form of Vit B3 which boosts collagen production which in turn helps improve skin texture, improve fine lines and wrinkles and helps with an overall even skin complexion Lactic and glycolic acid - as stated earlier, these serve as chemoexfoliants, which give room for routine or prescription creams to get absorbed better into the skin after the top layer has been shed using the lactic and glycolic acids.
8. For the dark-skinned women, what skincare advice can you give them to maintain their melanin while still having flawless skin?
I know a lot of people are so carried away with the use of ‘bleaching products’ containing hydroquinone to get lighter skin, but let us always remember that prolonged usage of these creams also has sometimes irreversible adverse effects. There are non-hydroquinone ingredients that can be substituted for hydroquinone which one can use over a long period of time (examples include arbutin and Kojic acid)
A dedicated daily skin care routine and sun screen will go a long way in helping us maintain a clear and flawless complexion.

When asked the definition of a home, most people will probably say that a home is where they spend their time when they are not out and about; for some, it is a place of comfort and freedom. These are all true, but not necessarily the case for everybody; for some, it is just a storage place, and they do not spend much time there. Who's to say that your home can't also be a safe haven, a place of solace, a place that's not only functional but also a sanctuary, a place free of external issues?
We will be sharing ways in which you can transform your space from just a regular abode to a place of tranquility and peace, where you want to run to get refreshed.
Painting your walls with the right colors does wonders for getting your home into that zen mood. There is a study on human behaviors based on colors called color psychology. This is research on how colors affect the moods and temperaments of individuals, and it showed that colors like red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and green, which are essentially bright colors, emit a certain mood in humans. Bright colors are also known to make your space appear bigger than it actually is. When done tastefully, dark colors can come off well. So choosing the right color with the mood you want best when you go to your home helps a lot in slowly making your home your den.

Adding natural elements, such as plants, wood, and stone, can bring a sense of calm and balance to your home. As little as having a window to face a mini garden you created or having potted plants and raftan looking decorations can give you the natural outdoor vibe.

Crafting a signature scent for your home can elevate the ambiance of your living space to an entirely new level. The right fragrance can influence your mood and emotional state. Aromatherapy experts recommend different types of fragrances to evoke specific moods and emotions. For example, lavender is known for its calming properties and is often used in bedrooms and relaxation spaces, whereas peppermint can invigorate and energize, making it a popular choice for home offices and exercise areas. Once you've determined the mood you want to set, it's time to choose your scent. While traditional candles and diffusers are popular choices, there are many other creative ways to incorporate fragrances into your home decor. You might try incorporating essential oils into your cleaning routine, adding fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to your kitchen decor, or even using scented sachets in your drawers and closets. When selecting a scent, keep in mind that certain fragrances may not be suitable for all living spaces. For example, strong or spicy scents like cinnamon or clove may be overwhelming in small rooms, while floral scents may clash with certain decor styles. Ultimately, the key is to find a balance that complements your personal taste and enhances the overall ambiance of your home. Whether you prefer bold and invigorating or soft and soothing scents, creating a signature fragrance for your home is a simple way to make your space feel more inviting, comfortable, and uniquely yours.
Creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere in your home can be essential to achieving mindfulness and reducing stress. However, it can be challenging to achieve this if your space is cluttered with different things in different places. It's not just about the physical mess; clutter can also create mental chaos and make it difficult to focus on the present moment. To create an effective home sanctuary, it's crucial to eliminate any unnecessary clutter. Start by organizing your possessions and getting rid of anything that no longer serves you. This could include old clothes, broken appliances, or even sentimental items that simply take up space. Essentially, finding serenity and sanctuary does not have to involve running to a friend's house when you can achieve them right within your own home. By following the listed steps, you can create a peaceful environment that allows for moments of solitude and calmness. Embracing these habits and practices can help ease stress levels and promote a sense of well-being from the comfort of your own home.
Nigeria is blessed with diverse cultures and traditions and with this comes food options to satisfy people with even the most delicate palette. From the yoruba efo riro to the tasteful onugbu soup from the igbos, there are endless food options to choose from when picking what appeals to your taste. In this edition we will be sharing with you the groundnut soup recipe, this is a staple meal in Benin and can be consumed with rice, yam and any swallow of your choice.
Groundnut soup is a nutty, savory and spicy Nigerian peanut stew commonly eaten for lunch or dinner. While some might argue why groundnuts should be transformed into soup, we will let you know that food is generally art and once made properly, you might want to make this soup your go to option for your carb meals. Making this meal is really not complicated and the most hassle you would go through is blending the groundnut, which if you think about it is not that much of a hassle in comparison to other Nigerian soups.
INGREDIENTS
• Protein of your choice (we recommend goat meat)
• Raw or toasted peanut (2 cups) You can also use peanut butter that is flavored with salt only
• Grinded Habanero pepper (use according to your spice preferences)
• Spinach leave (chopped)
• Crayfish (2 tablespoon)
• Palm oil (3 tablespoons)
• Scent or spinach leaves
• Salt to taste
1. Before the main preparation of the soup, you will need your meat stock.
2. In a pot, garnish your protein option (goat meat in our case) over low- medium heat with the onions, spice and salt until tender.
3. Remember that the cooking time for goat meat differs based on their gender, you may need to cook the meat for longer for it to be tender.
4. After boiling your meat, if you are using raw peanuts, you toast the peanuts in a pan, stirring continuously over low heat, till the nuts turn toasty in color. If you are using already toasted peanuts then you can skip the process and go straight to blending it.
5. If you are using the raw peanuts then, allow the nuts to cool completely before grinding.
6. Using your blender or food processor, grind the peanuts into a rough powder.
7. Mix the stock liquid from the goat meat, with the ground peanuts and peppers in a pot, be careful to avoid lumps from the peanut mix.
8. Bring this mixture to a gentle boil over low- medium heat for about 10 minutes, mixing continuously to prevent burning.
9. At this stage, you may add more or less water depending on the consistency you want. If you prefer a lighter soup consistency, add more water. If you prefer a thicker soup consistency then reduce the quantity of water you add. The soup might thicken as it gradually cooks and once it cools down.
10. After 10 minutes, add your palm oil, meat, crayfish, and cook for another 5 minutes. Then add your preferred spinach or scent leaves and simmer for 5 more minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
To truly savor and appreciate the full flavor of this dish, it is recommended to serve it piping hot, straight from the pot. The ideal accompaniment will vary depending on personal preference and taste, but some popular choices include white rice, pounded yam, garri, wheat and swallow options. These side dishes not only complement the soup, but also add additional texture, color, and nutrients to the overall meal.
Additionally, do not forget to enjoy this dish in a cozy and inviting atmosphere, surrounded by loved ones and good conversation, to fully enhance the dining experience.
