Ongoing Strike at Virgin Las Vegas Hotel Leads to Arrests

In a calculated striking action against Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in Nevada, members of Las Vegas’s Culinary Workers Union, the state’s largest hospitality union, held a civil disobedience arrest action on November 21. At USAE press deadline, it was unclear how many union members were arrested. The action is the first

open-ended strike for Local 226 in 22 years.

Civil disobedience arrest action is a non-violent form of protest designed to deliberately violate the law in order to bring attention to circumstances at the center of a protest or movement. Representatives from the Virgin Las Vegas said they were aware of the action in advance, explaining that the arrests “are a well-known tactic

Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano told investors in a November 14 Q3 earnings call that “business momentum is excellent, and as a company that embraces change, we con-

“To this end, we have undertaken an enterprise-wide process to enhance our effectiveness and efficiency across the company,” Capuano said. “We want to further empower our teams closest to our markets, guests, owners and franchisees to operate even more nimbly. While this work is not yet complete, we believe these efforts will drive

“It is disappointing that Culinary Union leaders are prepared to spend their own members’ resources on fake arrests, rather than engaging in constructive good faith bargaining— something they have not yet done,” Virgin Las Vegas said in a statement.

Hundreds of Local 226 and Bartenders Union hotel and culinary union workers at the Virgin Las Vegas walked off the job on November 15 in an effort to come to terms on a new five-year contract with the property.

Approximately 700 of the union’s more than 60,000 members are employed at the Virgin Las Vegas.

The strike follows months of failed negotiations after the previous contract expired on June 1, 2023, according to Local 226.

“In negotiations, the company’s proposal works out to an estimated $0.30 per year to wages over five years after deducting money for benefits,” said Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer for the union.

He called the proposal “miles apart” from the union’s demands. At other Strip properties, new union contracts have won unprecedented wage increases. This includes The Strat, where non-tipped workers received wage increase of more than $4 and hour. Pappageorge called Virgin Las Vegas’ most recent proposal “an insult to every worker.”

In a November 8 statement preceding the union’s initial strike action, Virgin Las Vegas said it was aware of the forthcoming strike and called the union uncooperative. The company claimed the union “did not allow” team members to vote a proposal from the property made in June, “and we have been awaiting the Union’s

keting and public relations, driving transformative results and inspiring future leaders.”

Michelle Woodley, President of Preferred Travel Group, has been “a visionary leader in hospitality marketing, leveraging her expertise to drive global initiatives that strengthen the Preferred brand and elevate industry standards,” HSMAI stated. A graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, Woodley’s “strategic insights and commitment to innovation have significantly contributed to the growth and success of hospitality marketing,” HSMAI added.

Victoria de Falco, Principal & Cofounder of Redpoint Marketing PR, has “dedicated her career to shaping the narrative of the hospitality industry through groundbreaking public relations strategies and trend-setting campaigns,” according to HSMAI, and her “creative approach and passion for storytelling have helped count-

response to a number of proposals since July 11.”

“While we value the negotiation process, the Union has yet to cooperate with our attempts to reach a good-faith agreement,” Virgin Las Vegas said.

“Many of the individuals applying to work with Virgin Hotels Las Vegas had been laid off by other properties following their acceptance of the Culinary Union’s economically unsustainable contract,” according to Virgin Las Vegas representatives.

ASAE is introducing a conference designed to equip association CEOs and chief elected leaders with strategies to address today’s most complex challenges.

The inaugural Governance + Strategy Forum will be held April 29–30 in Washington, D.C.

It is one of the first offerings from ASAE’s Association Governance Institute (AGI), a newly launched initiative dedicated to advancing excellence in governance practices for associations.

“AGI is very excited to introduce this new course,” said Paul Pomerantz, FACHE, FASAE, Managing Director of AGI. “It provides the Chair and CEO, the leadership dyad, an opportunity to explore the key

strategic challenges impacting their association, to strengthen teamwork and alignment, and to learn from their peers in other associations. It’s a valued addition to ASAE/AGI governance education.”

ASAE said: “The two-day forum promises an immersive, highly interactive experience, where chief staff and elected leaders will engage in cutting-edge research, master the essentials of building strong executive-board partnerships, and connect with peers from associations facing similar opportunities and challenges.”

Content leaders from McKinley Advisors, an association consulting firm, will supply insights from their extensive experience with hundreds of associations.

“Navigating the intersection of governance and strategy is an es-

sential competency for today’s association leadership teams. In a world that favors agility, speed to market and innovation, CEOs and chairs need time together and a set of practical tools that they can deploy to ensure the board can have tough conversations and stay focused on the right things,” said Jay Younger, FASAE, President & CEO of McKinley Advisors. “The Forum will be a research-based, collaborative learning lab for growth-minded associations who are serious about pursuing excellence in their governance and strategy domains. We could not be more excited to partner with ASAE to bring this program to our community.”

Mary Kate Cunningham Promoted to Chief Public Policy and Governance Officer at ASAE

Mary Kate Cunningham, CAE, has been promoted to ASAE’s Chief Public Policy and Governance Officer.

ASAE President & CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, made the announcement on November 20. The organization noted the move underscores it unwavering commitment to championing associations on Capitol Hill and ensuring good governance that supports ASAE and the association community.

“Associations are the backbone of workforce development, economic resilience and community impact,” Cunningham said. “I am honored to take on this expanded role and look forward to supporting Michelle, ASAE’s board of directors, staff and members to ensure associations have a strong voice in shaping public policy and have favorable conditions to carry out their vital missions.”

Previously the association’s senior

vice president of public policy, Cunningham in her expanded role will continue to report to Mason and also assume additional responsibilities as senior liaison to the ASAE Board of Directors. ASAE noted the dual focus reflects a dedication to impactful policy work and organizational governance during a pivotal time for associations.

“Mary Kate has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic insight in advancing the priorities of our members,” Mason said. “Her tireless advocacy, most recently on workforce development issues, has positioned associations as indispensable drivers of economic growth and innovation. As we prepare for the challenges ahead, including efforts to protect associations from undue taxation in the upcoming tax reform debate, Mary Kate’s leadership will be critical.”

Cunningham took the reins of ASAE’s public policy department in 2018 and has a long track record of

Michele Swann Departing as Head of Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority

Michele Swann, longtime General Manager & CEO of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority in Georgia, has announced she’s stepping down effective December 31.

Swann, who took on the leadership role in 1995, has been responsible for the administrative oversight and strategic growth of the Cobb Galleria Centre, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, Galleria Specialty Shops, and ArtsBridge Foundation. Swann’s successor will be named in early December.

given corporate credit cards and on work trips have racked up charges. The association refers to board officers as “volunteers.”

NAR declined USAE’s invitation to comment on the story or address if it would consider changing the payment structure for its volunteer leaders.

Mantill Williams, a spokesman for NAR, told the Times the group’s elected leaders “raise their hands to serve the industry,” a job that “requires a substantial time commitment, personal sacrifice and significant travel.” He declined to address specific questions about perks or spending on items such as massages and tickets, or about how the spending aligns with its goals as a nonprofit trade organization.

ASAE said it does not compensate board members.

“CEO compensation decisions are a core responsibility of the board of directors,” ASAE President & CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, told USAE . “ASAE recommends that boards seek the assistance of compensation and benchmarking experts to evaluate the marketplace as well as the organization’s needs. ASAE has advanced benchmarking tools and services to help associations determine appropriate compensation for most positions, including the chief executive.”

Other industry organizations such as the U.S. Travel Association, PCMA, MPI, Destinations International and IAEE did not have compensation listed for board members on their latest Form 990s, nor did the U.S.

achieved over the past 29 years,” said Swann.

A 40-year veteran of the venue management industry, Swann has opened, operated, and expanded a variety of facilities. These include convention centers, arenas, and performing arts centers in Atlanta; College Park, Georgia; Augusta, Georgia; and Niagara Falls, New York.

“Michele deserves all the credit for her steady leadership and execution of the Authority’s vision—among other things—to develop the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, create the ArtsBridge Foundation, launch the capital plan to construct the performing arts center, guide the operations through a pandemic and oversee the design and programming

Chamber of Commerce, Consumer Technology Association or American Bar Association. The American Heart Association gave $2,367 to its board president in 2023, but that was the lone board payment.

The Times spoke with seven lawyers who specialize in nonprofit law and said the group’s spending appears excessive and may run afoul of tax law. Several noted NAR’s spending is known among watchers of nonprofits.

Jeffrey S. Tenenbaum, Managing Partner, Tenenbaum Law Group, has worked with ASAE on various projects.

“It is highly unusual—I would even say virtually unheard-of—for volunteer leaders and officers to receive compensation at those levels,” said Tenenbaum. After a landmark price-fixing case last year, he added, scrutiny on NAR was high. “Many of us who practice association antitrust law have always wondered, How can they get away with this?”

The story spotlighted perks and compensation provided to former CEO Bob Goldberg such as first-class airline tickets when he traveled for business and, once a month, for a round-trip first-class ticket for his wife; $1,500 monthly car allowance; and $2,250 a month to cover utilities and insurance at his pied-à-terre in Chicago.

The extras came in addition to a $1.2 million salary that would, according to tax returns, grow to $2.6 million in five years. Goldberg stepped down last November following a $1.8 billion verdict against the association.

“NAR even agreed to pay for a pet sitter to watch his dogs when Mr.

for the renovation and expansion of the Cobb Galleria Centre,” said Jerry Nix, Chairman of the Authority. “She has been a watchful steward of the Authority’s assets, and the longevity and tenure of her staff is a testament to her quiet, humble leadership.”

Connie Engel, Chairwoman of the Authority’s Personnel Committee, noted the “dedication and heart [Swann] has put into everything she has done over the last 29 years, including the years spent integrating the Cobb Galleria campus and parking with the new Braves development. Her leadership has resulted in a successful partnership with the Atlanta Braves, Cobb County, and other area stakeholders.”

Goldberg was away from his home outside Washington on business,” the Times said.

Additional spending included stays for officers at luxury hotels, golf, spa treatments, tickets to see the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks, $300 bottles of wine, and cars and drivers on business trips. Three former elected officials told the Times that they never or rarely filed travel expenses for reimbursement while in office, opting to use their NAR credit cards instead.

Williams said the money was for travel expense reimbursements and “administrative stipends”—which he later explained to the newspaper were payments meant to offset the work they missed as realtors when

performing their roles as elected officials.

The Times did note one time NAR addressed its spending: when “Hamilton” opened on Broadway so many elected officers bought tickets with corporate cards it “set off alarms.” NAR kept former employees on the payroll as consultants for years after they resigned. On LinkedIn, Goldberg identifies himself as an “executive consultant” for the association. Dale Stinton, Goldberg’s predecessor, has earned $250,000 a year as a “former officer/consultant” since 2019, according to tax records. A former chief advocacy officer also earned more than $300,000 in 2022 as a “former officer,” according to tax records.

Following a personal introduction from everyone attending at The Showroom DC, the initial three presentations encapsulated the eclectic, all angles approach to athletic experiences the Forum was designed to deliver.

Amanda Tischler, Sr. Vice President, Capitals Marketing at Monumental Sports and Entertainment, led off with a behind the scenes look at the team’s 50th Anniversary Campaign. She shared how city engagement has played a key role in creating fan experiences and messaging with everything from logo design to alumni events to booking the band Third Eye Blind to spreading hockey throughout the region was discussed.

Beyond the Game: Driving Brand Success with Superfan Clubs featured Jonathan Yaffe, CEO, AnyRoad, and Patrick Lowe, Head of Partnerships, LALIGA North America. They looked at LL12, an outlet which through membership tiers allows fans of Spanish football unparalleled access to players, matches, and exclusive merchandise.

Batting third, Mary Cline, Vice President, National Sales, Wolfgang Puck Catering, showed how the firm used strategy, Kaizen—a Japanese business philosophy that emphasizes continuous improvement across an organization—talent and adrenaline to fuel eight days of events for Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles.

Asked what he hoped attendees would take from the event, Matt Johnson, Managing Director, Informa Connect, told USAE: “The DMO market remains one of the most untapped resources for the world’s largest leagues, teams, and brands. Many of these organizations navigate procurement processes—both formal and informal—that bypass DMOs. Not by choice, but because they simply don’t know what’s possible. We’re on

ties across six states, Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas, the Georgia-based hospitality management company stated.

“Atrium’s first year to offer our innovative WomenRISE program has been highly successful,” said Anneliesse Cooper, Chief Human Resources Officer at Atrium. “WomenRISE participants, instructors and mentors

a mission to bridge this gap and unlock the potential of these partnerships.”

Johnson said last spring, the firm convened a focus group of 15 leading brands to dive deep into their decision-making processes: how they select destinations, choose experiential partners and activate their events. Over two-and-half days of moderated Q&A, it became clear there’s a significant disconnect and lack of awareness about the role and value of DMOs.

“From site selection and hotel RFPs to permits for venues or game day experiences, we discovered an incredible opportunity to reset the narrative,” Johnson said. “By facilitating introductions and building understanding, we can streamline connections between sports leagues, teams, and brands with DMOs, ensuring their annual events and fan experiences reach new heights. It’s time to close the gap and revolutionize how these partnerships are formed.”

Major events such as the Super Bowl can deliver over $600 million in economic impact, while others, such as the NBA Finals or MLB All-Star Game, contribute $150 million to $200 million, Johnson shared. Additionally, they often spur infrastructure improvements and elevate a city’s global profile.

Johnson noted many DMOs miss the opportunity to fully capitalize on professional sports due to limited collaboration with teams, leagues and brands, as the NFL, NHL and WWE often operate outside traditional DMO networks. Johnson added those entitles are shaping the future of fan engagement.

Over the next three years, the forum aims to strengthen connections, drive mutual value, and unlock untapped potential for destinations and the sports industry.

“Now is the time for DMOs to step up, forge partnerships, and embrace the power of collaboration,” Johnson said. “With billions in economic impact at stake, the Sports Innovation Forum is the premier platform for destinations ready to lead in the professional sports space.”

The program’s first training class began in February and spanned nine months. The program involved group classes, individual interviews, and “360-degree assessments for identifying strengths and areas for development,” Cooper added.

The inaugural graduating class includes Leslie Ciccarello, Assistant General Manager, Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa USF in Floriday; Sarah Reall, Assistant General Manager, Tucson Marriott University Park in Arizona; Sheila Smith, Operations Training Manager, Front Office, Atrium Hospitality; Megan Wallstrom, Assistant General Manager of Food and Beverage, Embassy Suites by Hilton San Marcos Hotel Conference Center in Texas. The remaining five participants declined to be identified, an Atrium spokesperson told USAE Ciccarello described an “aha moment” during the program when she received the results from her 360-degree feedback assessment, which included insight from her managers, peers, and direct report.

“I was overwhelmed with joy and pride while looking over how my peers, direct reports and managers rated me,” she said. “All rated me higher than I rated myself, which gave

me a lot of confidence.”

As part of the inaugural WomenRISE program, participants took several themed training sessions focused on topics crucial to successfully manage hotels.

“During the profit and loss training session of WomenRISE, I found that I know much more about the hotel P&L than I give myself credit,” Wallstrom said. “I realized that my lack of confidence in my abilities was holding me back. Since then, I’ve started leading a P&L review with my team each month and am teaching them how to interpret hotel financials.”

The inaugural class of the WomenRISE program were selected following a portfolio-wide talent review conducted in 2023. This year’s participants have a wide variety of backgrounds, including in operations, sales and marketing, and finance.

The search for the next group of WomenRISE participants is already underway, Atrium said.

The daily “Floridian” route includes intermediate stops in Cleveland; Pittsburgh; Washington, D.C.; Jacksonville; Orlando; and Tampa. It combines the routes of the Capitol Limited and Silver Star for a nearly 48-hour journey.

“The Floridian offers customers an exceptional and sustainable journey to great destinations between Chicago and Miami, providing the amenities and delicious food our guests enjoy when traveling with us,” said Eliot Hamlisch, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for Amtrak.

Coach tickets start at just over $100 for the trip. These tickets include wide, reclining seats with legroom, no middle seat, and windows. For an additional fee, a limited number of dining car meals are also available for Coach Class customers.

“First Class private rooms” start at $700. Room options include a Roomette—featuring two reclining seats that transform into upper and lower

beds by night and shower access—or a Bedroom offering twice the space of a Roomette and an in-room restroom and shower.

The private rooms feature large bi-level windows, a sink, and a dedicated attendant who provides turndown service, assists with meals, helps with luggage, and “shares great stories of life on the rails,” according to Amtrak. All customers in private rooms also receive complimentary lounge access at major stations and priority boarding.

CLIA Releases Global Economic Impact Study… Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has shared highlights from its 2023 Global Economic Impact Study. The study revealed the highest-ever global economic impact from cruise tourism and reaffirmed that 2023 surpassed 2019 as the benchmark year for cruise industry performance. Last year, the cruise industry generated $168.6 billion in total economic impact globally—a 9% increase over 2019.

“The cruise industry is an important contributor to the global economy, generating billions of dollars in economic output and supporting millions of jobs,” said Kelly Craighead, President & CEO of CLIA. “As demand for cruising continues to grow, our member cruise lines are committed to preserving the integrity, cultural heritage and beauty of treasured destinations so they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”

According to the study, the cruise industry contributed 1.6 million incremental jobs in 2023 and paid

$56.9 billion in wages, representing growth over 2019 of 37% and 13%, respectively. More than three quarters of these jobs were land-based. Cruising also contributes $85.6 billion to global GDP, with its growth outpacing that of the global economy.
