Lieutenant's Lieutenant's Greeting Greeting

Hello, Division 11 Key Clubbers!

With September in full swing, I want to give a shout-out to everyone for the energy and enthusiasm you 've brought into promoting Key Club! From what I've seen, the creative TikTok videos many of you have been making are both super engaging and fun, keep it up! It’s a great way to reach new members and showcase what Key Club is all about. For all the club officers out there, if you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time to start planning your first meeting of the year. This is your chance to set the tone and build excitement within your club!

Also, don’t miss out on participating in your school’s club fair to attract new students, this is a key opportunity to grow your membership. If your club doesn’t have a social media platform like Instagram, consider creating one to boost promotion and keep your members informed. A well-managed page can work wonders in showcasing your club’s activities and spirit to the wider school community!

And of course, we can’t forget that Fall Rally is right around the corner! This event is one of the best opportunities to come together with Key Clubbers from all over, show off our spirit, and celebrate our shared commitment to service. Scroll down to find out more and start getting hyped!

In Service and Friendship, Stacy Qu

IInternational nternational TTrustee’s rustee’s Greeting Greeting

Hello New York Key Club!

My name is Ethan Schmidt, and I serve as your primary International Trustee. As an International Trustee, I work on Key Club’s International Board with International President, David Robaina, International Vice President, Carissa Andorf, and 10 other International Trustees to develop student programs, communicate with our international preferred partners and charities, accomplish liaison work between Districts, and develop Key Clubs around the world! All International Board (or, as we say, “I-Board”) members serve on 2 of 5 committees: Executive, Global Relations, Programs and Partners, The 100th, and Communications. As a member of the Executive committee and co-chair of the Programs and Partners, I have been able to work extensively with our preferred partners and charities as well as with Kiwanis staff to better KCI programs such as the Global Leadership Certificate and Key Club Week. As an International Trustee, my work is primarily focused on behind the scenes matters that members interact with as a final product (I like to think of the role as a construction worker who lays the foundation and builds the framework of the final product of the “building,” or in this case, a major Key Club event or program!)

My journey with Key Club has been a whirlwind in the best possible way. Joining during my freshman year, I stayed in the dark about Key Club matters until my advisor suggested that I run for Lt. Governor at my District Convention. Uninformed, unprepared, and rather scared, I decided to take a leap of faith and go for it. To my utter surprise, I was elected, and I served at the Division 6 Lt. Governor on the 2022-2023 Alabama District Board. I found my experience thoroughly enjoyable, as I had never before been able to connect with so many different individuals in my community. However, I also very quickly set a new goal for myself: I wanted to serve internationally. At the conclusion of my term, I took an arguably even bigger leap of faith and decided to try my chances at International Convention. There, in Anaheim, California, I was elected International Trustee, and I was lucky enough to be reelected at this past ICON in Atlanta, Georgia. Looking back, I can definitely say that the hardest part of the journey is mustering up the courage to actually run for a position. I often found myself stewing over hypotheticals and worrying about what could happen. If you are thinking about accomplishing something, my biggest advice would be to at least try! It’s always better to look back and pride yourself on what did happen instead of what would’ve been.

While I could certainly ramble about Key Club for hours and hours, I am more than an International Trustee! While I do Trustee work for Capital, La-MissTenn, and New York, I actually am born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. I am currently a senior in high school, and I’ve been in Key Club since the start of my freshman year! I have a deep affinity for community and global well-being, and I try to base my work around that interest. I know it is extremely geeky, but I am a big fan of philosophy, and I often try to tie those intricacies, often Rawlsian or Kritik-esque in nature, into the more simple, day-to-day flow of life. I find myself using a quote from Dalai Lama, “Love and passion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, we cannot survive,” as a guiding principle. Outside of Key Club, I participate in Lincoln Douglas debate, math team, mock trial, and grantwork for nonprofits! One thing I do 24/7 is listen to music. Some of my favorite artists include Solange, Devonte Hynes (also known as Blood Orange), Erykah Badu, Jhene Aiko, and Lana Del Rey!

Millennium

On September 4th, Millennium hosted a phone charm fundraiser in collaboration with Midwood, Murrow, Bronx Sci, Dual, and BardM key clubs for a jewelry event in Prospect Park the day before school started! Members got to enjoy creating little trinkets while also catching up with friends, eating snacks, and overall enjoying the weather! The sun ended up peeking near the end of our fundraiser but it was a nice breezy day the board specialized in making sure there were no bead spills, in charge of attendance tracking, money handling, and overseeing the event to make sure nothing went wrong. Members were to pay $5 for every accessory they made. I had the opportunity to share some of my jewelry works: a passion of mine, at this particular event! I was able to sell some of my pre-made phone charms to members that came to the event. It really helped me know whether or not to lead future jewelry events or fundraisers for my home club. On September 14th, Key Clubbers attended the Chinatown Beautification Day Youth Conference, located at 40 Broad St, New York, NY 10004. During this event, we attended workshops and listened to different speakers, all of whom are Chinatown business owners. Some of their businesses include Lai Hing Jewelry, Pearl River Mart, and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. During each speaker’s presentation, they discussed their origins and experiences growing up in Chinatown in the mid-late 1900s, as well as how they started and expanded their family businesses. Not only did they talk about how their businesses evolved, but they also spoke about the impact their businesses had in inspiring other Asian Americans by passing down their traditions and culture. After the presentations, we enjoyed a lunch that consisted of a variety of Chinese food, such as fried rice and dumplings. One of the most exciting parts of the day was the different performances by diabolo players (yoyo players) that took place after lunch. It was super cool to watch, and we even got to learn how to do some of the yo-yo tricks! Overall, this experience was very eye-opening and inspiring. We were all able to learn something new, whether it was about the personal struggles of Asian American business owners in Chinatown, different traditions and cultures, or learning some new yo-yo tricks. It was a beautiful event that showcased the vibrant spirit of Chinatown.

Farmingdale KEY Club started meetings last Wednesday, September 25, getting a head start on advertising our many upcoming service events! We had many new and returning members join us as we discussed upcoming events such as the Breast Cancer Walk, a mini fair game to raise money to support breast cancer research, and the Field of Honor. We have tons of exciting activities coming up, and being able to unite so many students in order to help serve our community is so exciting. Students were also educated on KEY Club and our mission, allowing us to educate our members on the principles KEY Club runs on. We are excited for what is to come and can’t wait to start our fundraising and service endeavors!!
