São Brás de Alportel A hidden gem in the hills

High in the hills of the Algarve lies São Brás de Alportel, a beautiful, traditional village with friendly and welcoming locals.
Officially declared a municipality in 1914, São Brás de Alportel was the centre of cork production for Portugal and, indeed, the rest of the world for many years. The village consists of traditional low white houses decorated with tile panels and natural stone, evidence of the prosperity of the cork industry.
Here, you can enjoy a walk through the winding streets and around the many small squares, admiring the Baroque decorations and flowers in the windows, something that is very typical of the Algarve. The cork factory, the old Roman road and the museum of local costumes are also well worth a visit.
Be sure to explore the hilly area around São Brás de Alportel too, where there are numerous small villages with whitewashed stone walls that sparkle in the sun. Take in the beautiful surrounding nature through the hills covered with almond, fig and pomegranate

trees. These gorgeous surroundings are ideal for exploring by car or on foot. The route from Mesquita with its traditional watermill, through the picturesque villages of Mealhas, Gralheira and Vilarinhos, offers a fascinating insight into the Barrocal - the land that lies between the coast and the inland hills.
