Mértola is our first office in the beautiful area of the Alentejo. After being in real estate for more than 15 years in the Algarve, we now want to offer our service as well to property owners and buyers in the Alentejo.

Go back in time in Mértola
In the Alentejo lies the beautiful white village of Mértola, where Portugal’s Moorish history is best represented.
Mértola is a small village with characteristic white houses and red rooftops in between the hills. It is a beautiful place with a fantastic historical atmosphere. Here stands the only remaining mosque in Portugal, now a church, but one in which the original structures and elements of the mosque still exist.
The castle of Mértola is also of Moorish origin. It towers majestically above the River Guadiana, the river that forms the border with Spain. The view from this castle is magnificent. You see the Vale do Guadiana natural park. The park is almost 70,000 hectares and well worth a visit. Nature is characterised by the Montado: a rolling, savannah-like landscape. There are plenty of car routes, hiking trails and viewpoints in the park.
As befits the Alentejo, everything goes quietly and there are plenty of places to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And for all kinds of drinks and snacks in between. In Mértola, time almost stands still and it is wonderful
to experience that. Also the many beautiful vineyards should be mentioned when we speak about the Alentejo. Delicious wines come from this region.
Mértola is situated about 100 kilometres north of the Albufeira and from Mértola you can make a lovely day trip to the Algarve. The route winds through the Serra do Calderão (up to 600 metres altitude). The journey takes at least two hours and maybe three because the number of possible photo stops is infinite. The colours and ruggedness along the way are amazing.
