Burmese amber, also referred to as Burmite is from the Hukawng Valley in the northern state of Kachin in Burma and can be dated more than 100 million years back in time. It was recently realized that Burmese amber is much older than most other types of amber, and compared to other amber, burmite is also harder, which can be attributed to its older age.
One of the magical features of the Burmese amber is the color. Blue amber is fluorescent which means that it turns blue in UV light. When exposed to normal daylight, the blue amber appears yellowish and transparent. Depending on the angle of the light, it can also display color variations. This is because of the highly fluorescent quality.
The high polish and fluorescence of Burmese amber make it possible to create very unique and delicate carvings and jewellery. Because of its age, characteristics and rarity, Burmese blue amber is one of the most sought after amber types in the world
