Former judo champion Robert G. Hisaoka tells how he applied winning principles to become a business leader and philanthropist—creating a gala that fulfills his sister’s desire to assist others living with cancer, a highlight of the D.C. social scene.

THE SECRET OF WINNING “Maximum efficiency, minimum effort is the first principle of judo. I learned it from my father, a judo champion—and that has made a huge difference in my life,” says Robert G. Hisaoka, co-president of RRR Automotive Group, investor, and philanthropist. Overcoming force using skill and technique was more than a tactic: It was a call for mental discipline. Bob and his sister Joan learned self-reliance at an early age. “My mom passed away when I was 13 and my dad when I was 20. Even in the short time we had together, they had a lasting influence, teaching us to live life fully and help others. They also taught us to do our best— not someone else’s best.”
I thought, I don’t have the knowledge she had, but I can create a gala to support organizations that have the expertise to bring hope and healing. And that was the beginning of the Joan Hisaoka ‘Make a Difference’ Gala.”
The result: He created an event that is entertaining and inspiring at the same time, with varied entertainment and emcees including CNN news anchor Wolf Blitzer, CBS co-anchor Norah O’Donnell, and PBS host Cynthia Steele Vance.
STARTING FROM SCRATCH “Compete with yourself—not others. My parents’ advice had become real to me when I won my first national championship. When you’ve reached the top, you can’t look at others for inspiration,” says Bob. He began to focus on fulfilling Joan’s dream and how to make it happen.
EVERYONE WINS “Whatever you do, make a difference. I’ve learned over the years to set goals that have high impact—and thanks to a great network of friends and supporters, the gala has accomplished just that. We have raised over $5.7 million in six years, nearly $1.4 million in 2013 alone. This year’s goal is $1.5 million,” Bob says. “We have about a 99% retention rate. Our supporters are a phenomenal group, and each year more join us. We look out for not only the topline goal but the bottom line; it’s an elegant event with a purpose. Eighty percent of the proceeds go to the beneficiaries.”
His focus paid off. By age 12, he had become a national champion. At 21, he was the youngest fourth degree black belt in the U.S. After being sidelined from Olympic training by a knee injury, he turned his focus to business and then to philanthropy, with impressive results: He has been named Smith School of Business Alumnus of the Year by the University of Maryland; was nominated for the auto industry’s most prestigious honor, TIME Dealer of the Year; and has appeared on Washington Life Magazine’s “Philanthropic 50” list.
Three organizations will benefit in 2014: Life with Cancer®, an Inova Health System affiliate which provides education and support to those facing serious illness; the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, a group which takes a creative approach to healing; and the Brem Foundation to Defeat Breast Cancer, which works to eliminate breast cancer as a life- threatening disease through early diagnosis, research and information.
“I learned to set high goals and make them real,” he says. So when his sister, Joan, lost her battle with cancer in 2008, Bob had the confidence to take on a challenge that would honor her dream to assist others living with cancer—and raise millions to bring hope and healing. JOAN’S JOURNEY “Mutual welfare and benefit is the second principle of judo, and it was a guiding principle of our family,” says Bob. After attending various cancer-related retreats and programs across the country, Joan learned the immense healing power of emotional, psychological, and spiritual support. She developed a drive to share this information with others, which she unfortunately never had the time to carry out. He recalls a conversation they had in the hospital. “She said, ‘I want to make a difference.’ I told her, ‘You already have.’” As president of Hisaoka Public Relations, she had won the coveted Silver Anvil award for excellence in PR and volunteered for many charitable causes. But she wanted to do more— including helping those living with cancer. “After she passed, I reflected on how she wasn’t able to implement her ideas. Then
“I had two and a half months to plan the first gala, and I was starting from scratch. People told me it couldn’t be done. But I just kept going,” he said. He wanted to create a fundraiser that had high impact, yet didn’t take donor dollars from other causes. He also wanted to personalize the event. “There would be music that Joan liked, creative cuisine ... elements that embodied her style and life.” When planning the event he drew upon his previously established philanthropic network. He supports dozens of charities, from education to Olympic sports, serves on the board of groups such as Teach for America, and he invests in Venture Philanthropy Partners. “I drew on all my contacts with like-minded people, and was honored that over 500 came to the first gala in 2008,” he says.
The agenda for this year’s black-tie event features a lively mix. It begins with a fourcourse gourmet dinner with wine pairings presided over by Eric Ziebold, the James Beard award- winning chef behind CityZen in D.C. Then guests will enjoy a reception and dancing, as well as a live performance by David Aldo, former lead singer of Blood, Sweat and Tears. There are also silent and live auctions, featuring items such as a culinary evening with Eric Ziebold and an owner’s club suite at a Redskins game with field access before kickoff. Why does the event keep growing despite challenging economic conditions? “We’re known for amazing cuisine, unique experiences and a chance to network with top business leaders and sports figures. It’s a fun, inspiring, memorable event,” says Bob. THE INTERVIEW WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS? Owning a boutique and ultimately designing clothes were my lifelong dreams. I have loved fashion and wardrobing for as long as I can remember. When the opportunity arose to achieve this dream, I left my position as counsel to a small public company and opened JULIA FARR, a women’s clothing boutique in Friendship Heights, Washington, DC, with a focus on wardrobe consultation. Two years later in 2012, in partnership with my closest friend from Georgetown University, Ann Tierney Prochnow, we launched an American-made, women’s design and manufacturing business called The Julia Farr Collection. Our designs offer essential, timeless silhouettes in elegant, luxurious fabrics for the enlightened, cosmopolitan woman. WHO DO YOU PRIMARILY MARKET YOUR BUSINESS TO? After several months in business, I saw a significant need for polished, professional
clothing for the sophisticated Washington woman. Although my boutique features exquisite designs from emerging and established designers, I realized that the day-to-day needs of the busy, cosmopolitan woman – the kind of woman who gets up everyday and dresses for her office or meetings - were not being met. What was missing from the D.C. area was a market for the appropriate level of dress for certain occasions. The Julia Farr Collection was created to offer and style feminine, occasion appropriate and essential designs for every woman’s wardrobe. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGNS? We started with the basics. We began by creating the foundations of a woman’s professional wardrobe: the perfect pencil skirt, a well fitting chic silk blouse, a classic sheath dress with sleeves. We have now expanded beyond these go-to timeless designs into cocktail and dinner attire. We focus on great fit and meticulous craftsmanship, coupled with luxurious fabrics. We listen to what our clients tell us they are looking for in their wardrobe,
and we use their input when creating each season’s pieces. We create pieces we know will serve an indispensable purpose in a woman’s everyday wardrobe. WE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR DESIGNS NAMED AFTER NEIGHBORHOODS AND STREETS OF THE DC METROPOLITAN AREA. WILL YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING DESIGNS WITH A LOCATION INSPIRATION WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO? For Fall 2014, we have created the Dumbarton, Foxhall, Kalorama and Lafayette dresses, the Logan and Potomac tops, as well as the M Street Skirt. We believe the names capture the essence of the piece and give advice on how and when to wear it. For example, on our website we describe how to style the M Street skirt as well as some suggestions on where our customers could wear it. Other designs named after notable places with historic significance are the Decatur and Folger dresses, the Gaston Jacket and the Cosmos, Corcoran and Sequoia tops. The names speak to the women and the city that we market our business to.
