Roby Thompson, III has been in the real estate business 35 years and counting. He just "fell into the business" after his father suggested he speak with one of his college buddies, Wes Foster, about it. Roby studied at Gettysburg College and earned a degree in political science, working for an attorney for three years before realizing divorce law wasn't his cup of tea.

Real estate certainly seems to suit Roby! He was the top solo agent at Long and Foster for sales in 2015 in DC, and he has been the number one agent in his office for over two decades, and in the top one percent of agents across the USA for over ten years, breaking $60 million in sales in 2021.

Starting out, Roby learned that treating people with respect and gaining their trust is essential to making them comfortable to let you lead them through one, if not the most, important financial decision they typically make in their lives.

He has had many deals that were memorable and many clients that have become close friends throughout the years. His most memorable statistic is selling the Adams Inn B&B four times over a 25-year period, which is a somewhat nostalgic thing, and he hopes to resell it again one day.

The most important successes in Roby's life includes raising his three wonderful children and establishing a strong career so he could afford to provide for his wife and kids. He also shares that his secret sauce has always been going that extra mile for his clients.

Roby likes to go that extra mile because it shows that he actually does care about his clients and he is looking out for their best interests. Answering calls and emails immediately also gains trust. Looking them right in the eye when you speak with them and having an innate knowledge of the market and being able to respond instantly gives people a strong sense of confidence in you. He always tells the truth to his clients... Telling them what

they want to hear does no good for anyone and will typically result in a falling out and loss of the client and "bad press" about you to possible future clients. He would rather lose a listing than waste his clients' time.

Roby really enjoys spending time with his daughter and two sons when he's not busy at the office. He likes to play golf with his sons and he loves to going fishing and travel with his family. He has always worked solo until about 3 years ago when one of his sons started working with him. A lot of close friends who are agents have asked him many times why Roby doesn't go to the next level of business by creating his own team or brokerage. But honestly, he would rather go on a trip with his kids, or friends, and throw lures for fish than work to death. There is only so much money a guy needs, and life is too short to not balance the finer parts of living with the work of life.

The Skinniest Historic House in America HOUSE

Located at 523 Queen Street in Alexandria, Virginia and situated between two larger homes, this 7’ wide brick home claims the prize for most diminutive dwelling. Nicknamed the “Spite House,” (or Spitehouse) the home was built by John Hollensbury in 1830.

Hollensbury, a brickmaker and city council member in Alexandria, lived in a home on Queen Street that was built in 1780 and stood next to an alley. There are three stories on how the small building next to Hollensbury’s house came to be.

The best known story is that Hollensbury grew tired of people loitering in the alley as well as the horse-drawn wagons, which left gouges on his home’s exterior wall with their wagon-wheel hubs. He bought the alley lot at 523 Queen Street for $45.65 and in 1830 built a

small house out of spite measuring 7-feet 6-inches wide and 25feet deep to prevent others from further damaging his walls and to reduce noise. The reasoning behind constructing the house and its unusual size earned it the nickname “Spitehouse..

The second story of the building’s history is that Hollensbury and his neighbor who lived at 521 Queen Street were at one time good friends, but due to the neighbor’s carriage damaging Hollensbury’s house and a fallout in their friendship in the late 1820s, Hollensbury decided to build the small house.

The third and final story is that Hollensbury built a playhouse for his two daughters, Julia and Harriett, and that one of them later lived in the house as an adult.

The house is a frequent stop on guided tours of the Alexandria Historic District and tourists will frequently stop to take photos of or in front of the house, stretching their arms out to show how small the building is. On occasion people knock on the front door to ask if they can take a tour of the house.

The Hollensbury Spite House is one of four spite houses in Alexandria,

which most likely were built as alley houses to save on costs.

The oldest of the other spite houses is 205 King Street, which was built around 1812 and measures 11-feet 9-inches wide. It has served as a private residence, cobbler’s shop, and boutique store.

The third house is located at 403 Prince Street and measures 7-feet 9-inches wide. It was built sometime before 1883, most likely by Samuel Janney, who bequeathed the house and the adjoining property to his son, Henry.

The fourth spite house is located at 1401 Prince Street. It measures 8-feet 2-inches wide and unlike the others, it’s a one-story building. The house was constructed sometime in the 1890s and has been incorporated into the adjoining building.
