When it comes to our second homes, we often seek a retreat that offers more than just a change of scenery. We desire a space that reflects our personal style, a place where contemporary aesthetics meet comfort and functionality. In this article, we will explore the realm of modern design and delve into the ways you can infuse style and personality into your second home, creating a captivating space that goes beyond mere functionality.

Contemporary aesthetics are at the forefront of modern design, characterized by clean lines, minimalism, and a focus on open spaces. To achieve this look, start by selecting furniture that embodies simplicity and sophistication. Opt for pieces with sleek silhouettes, such as streamlined sofas, chairs with geometric shapes, and tables with clean edges. Consider materials like metal, glass, and wood to add texture and visual interest to your space.

While modern design often embraces a neutral color palette, don’t be afraid to inject pops of color to add vibrancy and personality to your

second home. Playful throw pillows, bold artwork, or a vibrant area rug can instantly breathe life into an otherwise minimalist space. The key is to strike a balance between the serene and the stimulating, creating an environment that is visually stunning yet soothing.

Incorporating the latest design trends is another way to infuse style into your second home. One popular trend is biophilic design, which seeks to bring nature indoors. Consider incorporating natural elements like plants, organic materials, and large windows that frame picturesque views. Not only does this enhance the overall aesthetic, but it also promotes a sense of tranquility and well-being.

Cutting-edge architecture is another aspect to consider when designing your second home. Explore innovative designs that blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of your chosen location. Floorto-ceiling windows, oating staircases, and open-concept layouts are just a few architectural elements that can create a stunning visual impact.

Creating inviting spaces within your second home is equally important. Modern design embraces the concept of open oor plans, which encourage seamless transitions between di erent areas of your

home. Use area rugs, furniture placement, and lighting to de ne distinct zones while maintaining a cohesive ow. Incorporate comfortable seating arrangements, cozy reading nooks, and a dining area that invites long conversations and shared meals.

Functionality should never be compromised in the pursuit of style. Utilize smart storage solutions to keep your space organized and clutter-free. Opt for multifunctional furniture pieces like ottomans with hidden storage or modular shelving systems. This allows you to maximize your space while keeping it visually appealing and free from unnecessary distractions.

Remember, a second home is a re ection of your personal style and a sanctuary where you can escape from the everyday. Infuse it with elements that speak to your passions and interests. Display cherished

mementos, artwork, and unique nds that tell your story. Incorporate personal touches that make you feel connected to the space, whether it’s a gallery wall of family photos or a cozy reading corner adorned with your favorite books.

In conclusion, modern design o ers a plethora of possibilities for infusing style and personality into your second home. By embracing contemporary aesthetics, incorporating the latest design trends, and considering cutting-edge architecture, you can create a visually stunning space that is both functional and inviting. Remember to strike a balance between simplicity and vibrancy, and to infuse the space with personal touches that make it truly your own. With these tips in mind, your second home will become a haven that embodies your unique style and o ers an escape like no other.

HOW TO ELEVATE YOUR SPACE AND STAY AHEAD OF FALL DESIGN TRENDS

With Autumn quickly approaching, homeowners throughout Washington DC will be looking to freshen their spaces up ahead of gatherings and the holiday season. BoConcept DC’s interior design experts have laid out ve trends to incorporate into the home for fall. Additionally, BoConcept is launching an entire collection to highlight the fall trends below.

BLEND MODERN DESIGN WITH TIMELESS STYLE

Incorporate a range of captivating pieces to add a touch of charm to any space such as vases, trays, and other items of home decor. In addition, it’s recommended to incorporate di erent types of textiles, like plaids, cotton and silk

BEVELED SURFACES

Beveled surfaces are a hot trend we’re seeing while looking towards the Fall. Speci cally, pillar-shaped table bases with a high-class appearance and a nicely structured texture add a slight touch of dimension without being too much.

WHITE CERAMIC

As the demand for ceramic materials continues to increase, white ceramic co ee and dining tables with a polished marble look, are opening up spaces and adding the perfect amount of sophistication.

DARK WOODEN DETAILS

A more classic and exclusive expression can be obtained with dark wooden furniture bases, such as with dining chairs. This is easily an up and coming Fall trend as it adds a unique “wow” factor and personality to a room.

JACQUARD CHENILLE WOVEN UPHOLSTERY FABRIC

The quality of this kind of fabric ensures items with creative, trendy, and colorful structures. More speci cally, this fabric is being used in sofas and living room chairs and works in a variety of colors.

NEVER TOO Frank Snyder

Iretired at age 65 having never run a mile in my life. My youngest daughter has run many marathons and an Ironman race. I set a goal to run a 5K (3 miles) race with her. It took me two years but nally did it saying, “I’ll never run that again”. However, over the years I have run 10Ks, half-marathons (13 miles), and eventually marathons including the Marine Corps Marathon.

Last September I ran the Kentlands 5K race nishing 2nd in my age group and was surprised to learn that quali ed me to enter the 2023 National Senior Games in Pittsburgh, where I had lived for 40 years. I set a new goal to run the 5K and 10K events in Pittsburgh with runners from the other states. I was the only 5K and 10K runner from Maryland in the 80-84 age group.

I injured my leg the week before the event, but powered through. After the injury, it felt good to nish the 10K race in the middle of the 80-84 age group.

The 5K race was on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. It was a hard race in light rain; up a long hill, level, up another hill, then nishing downhill. The rain was heavy during the awards ceremony where I won a 6th place ribbon out of 24. I was inspired by a 92 year old runner from Indiana who was the only one in his 90-94 age group, so he always wins his age group. In 2025, the biannual National Senior Games are in Des Moines Iowa, my home state. I hope to still be running in 2025. My current goal is to run the Parks half-marathon this September with my Son-in-Law and granddaughter. Inspirations to keep running.
