who provided the foundation for the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. I completed the LEED Green Building Certification Program and advanced training in five environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.

District Home Magazine:What does it mean to be the only licensed LEED Certified and NAR EcoBroker®/Ecosociate® for MD and DC? How does this set you apart? Jill Schwartz: The National Association of REALTORS® created the Green Designation to service the growing demand for green expertise in real estate. The Green Resource Council awards the NAR Green Designation to REALTORS® who have met specific educational requirements. I took it one step further. I joined the U.S. Green Building Council, a committee made up of architects, real estate agents, building owners, lawyers and environmentalists

DHM: What are the benefits of building/ owning a green home? JS: Greener choices can mean healthier indoor air quality and green upgrades and features offer cost benefits through return on investment. As a National Association of REALTORS® Green Designee, EcoBroker®/ Ecosociate®, I help my clients navigate green materials, energy-efficient technologies, green building and product ratings, and help them understand green design principles. I have access to top industry resources and tools that create awareness for healthier living choices. I also represent Long & Foster Real Estate as a Green Ambassador. My Green Living web site, www.greenlongandfoster.com, was recently launched to share fun ideas about green building and decorating.

billion in sales for the 10th year. In 2014, I was the #3 individual agent in the office and a member of Long & Foster’s prestigious Founders Club. I specialize in the luxury homes market and currently have a $5+ million dollar spec home listed for sale in Bethesda. Recently I was licensed in Virginia and Delaware. DHM: What are your thoughts on the upcoming 2015 market? Prices have risen for the past 24 months. Do you think this will continue? JS: Interest rates may be ticking up and I am confident that the Spring 2015 will be very strong for both buyers and sellers. I foresee a very active spring market in the Eco-Chic, trendy neighborhoods of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Adams Morgan, the U-Street Corridor, Petworth and Georgetown. The beach is also on an upswing. Bethany just had the highest oceanfront sale close in years. I think this new concept of polar vortex will create more momentum in the market for second homes and buyers looking to escape to the beaches!

DHM:What are your latest accomplishments and awards? JS: I am affiliated with Long & Foster’s Bethesda Gateway Office with over $1

Located in Ithaca New York, Tompkins Community Action is a sterling leader in assisting those in need throughout Tompkins County, New York. The “Magnolia House,” a residency for women in recovery is the latest accomplishment for TCA. Travis Price Architects won the commission by stressing a strong sense of modern design, sustainable practices, and most importantly a keen understanding of the occupants needs. he project on a small lot abutting the men’s shelter, Chartwell House, had numerous constraints. The design accommodates 14 living units, administrative services, classrooms and a commercial teaching kitchen. Most of the construction cost and land acquisition was funded by the government. TCA’s leadership under Lee Dillon and Danielle Harrington were instrumental in achieving this highly touted success. As the building bids came in under budget, the additional funds were readily allocated to add solar hot water heating, high efficiency LED lighting, and a first class educational commercial kitchen. Travis Price Architects with project architect Luciana Lessa took great pride in not only achieving the full requirements on a tight budget, highlighting energy self-sufficiency, but also for adding an aesthetic to the project that sets a high standard of modernism for shelter housing.

T

Magnolia House is a three story multi-family residential building that serves single women with their children who are homeless and in recovery from drug and/or alcohol abuse. The project consists of 14 enhanced studio units of permanent housing. The ground level has multiple common spaces that provide the residents on site supportive services that focus on building life skills (i.e. common living room, dining room, kitchen/cooking classroom, training classroom and a children’s playroom as well as staff facilities and 2 residential units.) The two floors above are solely residential with 6 units per floor. Each floor also has a common laundry room and sitting area.

An outdoor patio/entrance functions as a central core joining the Magnolia House with the existing Chartwell House. The site design is a longitudinal lot facing east and west. The project uses passive solar access and control wherever possible with its staggered walls and rear garden access. The longitudinal design maximizes the square footage for the Residential use as well as common outdoor areas. Besides designing for a friendly urban pedestrian experience, all efforts were made to make the space compatible with comfortable and pleasant living. Natural light and materials, friendly common spaces with gardens, educational facilities, and comfortable rooms are the primary design goals. When last visited, Travis Price was approached by one of the new residents who ecstatically proclaimed she loved the project so much that she was planning on making a Gingerbread model of the building. This couldn’t have been a more enjoyable Christmas present for 2014!

A favorite spot of the Obamas for intimate dinners and known for its signature refined American cuisine, the Blue Duck Tavern’s brunch certainly is not one to be overshadowed by the evening meal. Blue Duck has a passion for locally sourced ingredients, and recognizes their growers on the menu next to each dish. Enjoy a gourmet cocktail or fresh squeezed juice along with starters such as the Sticky Bun, assorted basket of homemade pastries, or Salmon Avocado Johnny Cake. Main dishes include traditional yet upscale comfort food such as Strawberry-Rhubarb French Toast, Eggs Benedict with Smoked Trout, Wagyu Beef Steak and Egg, and Short Rib Hash.

Birch & Barley takes a different approach to brunch. While for many in the restaurant industry it can be a difficult day, Chef Kyle Bailey & his team embrace with an all day Sunday brunch menu filled with sweet and savory dishes. Many choose the “Boozy Brunch” option, which begins with freshly fried donut holes and choice of two brunch cocktails like the Brunch Punch (Bourbon, Iced Black Tea, Citrus, Mint, Honey and Bitters) & the Cava Mimosa. The indulgent entrée offerings include the famous Fried Chicken & Waffles, HouseBrined Corned Beef Hash with Fried Duck Eggs, and Sausage, Egg and Cheese on a Warm Crème Fraîche Biscuit with hash browns.

Farmers Fishers Bakers boasts an award winning, all-you-can-eat, farmers market style brunch buffet. First, Heavenly Fluffy Biscuits & Warm Cinnamon Rolls are served to each table with butter and larder jam. The buffet spread features indulgences such as Brûléed Pink Grapefruit, Hot Maryland Crab Dip, Bananas Foster French Toast, Honey Pot Fried Chicken, Cured Ham, an assortment of house made pastries along with various salads and traditional brunch fare. Brunch includes complimentary drip coffee and iced tea, but don’t miss out on the cocktail options, featuring house made simple syrups and blends. This brunch is kidfriendly, and children under six eat free.

The appropriately named Southern Hospitality offers just that: a warm, sweet and welcoming approach to dining. Offering southern-style brunch on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesday evenings (who doesn’t love brunch for dinner?!), you’ll be sure to go home with a happy stomach—if not also a new friend or two. Start out with the bottomless mimosas, and go for a Benedict with your choice of fried chicken, crab cake or salmon. Feeling lunch? Enjoy some Shrimp ‘n’ Grits, Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes or all of the above. Finally, if you can’t decide between sweet and savory, spoil yourself with Southern Hospitality’s Chicken and Waffles. ISSUE NO. 10 23

LOGAN CIRCLE LIVING

Logan Circle, as many would suggest, is one of DC’s hottest neighborhoods. Its close proximity to dining, shopping and entertainment attracts a vibrant and fun community. Nestled between Dupont Circle and Shaw, the fusion of two distinct neighborhoods gives Logan Circle a unique flavor that sets it apart within DC. ogan Circle itself is the only one hundred percent residential circle in the city and is becoming one of the fastest growing and most densely populated areas in the district. With Victorian-style houses from the late 19th century in fun shades of red, yellow, blue, gray, and green, the architecture is one of the most appealing draws to the neighborhood.

L

Another huge draw is location. A quick walk from the White House, along with its myriad of food and shopping options, everything one might need is right there: from a local Whole Foods to weekly farmers markets to trendy new restaurants to local boutiques. Just outside of the residential circle, the 14th Street Corridor is bustling. Within its radius of a few blocks, the corridor is filled with upscale dining options with exquisite taste and exceptional service, along with eclectic music venues, avant-garde design boutiques, chic art galleries and historical architecture. The area represents a deep

convergence of old and new that attracts a vibrant crowd of twenty and thirty-something residents that have found the renovated houses and new high-rise apartments, hugely appealing. Residents find that there are so many choices and a walk in one direction or the other will reveal a treasure trove of culinary, fashion, and entertainment venues. For those looking for cultural and art opportunities, catch a show at Studio Theatre on 14th Street, or check out what exhibition Transformer, a non-profit art gallery on P street, has in store. Just around the corner, Black Whiskey is a reliable go-to for a night out or stop in to Birch and Barley to sample a few of their 500 beers in house. For the local foodie, Estadio is known for its delicious Spanish small plates, while Zeniar has an acclaimed sushi bar that fish-lovers wont want to miss. However, nothing compares to Sunday brunch at Le Diplomate, with its incredible French inspired cuisine and its overflowing baskets of fresh, warm pastries. A lot of these restaurants are furnished locally from Miss Pixie’s or Showroom 1412, two local furniture boutiques that carry such whimsical vintage wares; they could double as art galleries. The modern meets vintage décor mirrors the mixed culture of Logan Circle’s old and new. Logan Circle’s recent boom is no surprise. With its stunning historical architecture, coupled with countless dining and cultural opportunities, there is no place like it and everyone wants a taste. — by Courtney Ingard

District Home Magazine: How would you describe your overall design aesthetic? Mary Douglas Drysdale: I would describe my style as “traditionally based with a modern lens.” In terms of scope, I look to find and develop a balance between art, architecture and decoration. I started my practice in Washington, DC in my late 20’s and the work I was doing then was very minimal and spare, what I would describe as more modernist than traditional. However, working in Washington, which is after all the “Federal” city, I realized that the architecture here is often historic, and even those buildings that are recent or currently being built are more often than not inspired by traditional architectural styles. As the years passed, I found that my style became more architecturally traditionally based in terms of details, but remained modern in terms of furniture layouts and overall sparseness from a decorative impact perspective. I tend to incorporate modern art in many of my jobs, as often times my clients are collectors, and I have found that this contrast of modern art with traditional detailing gives a fresh and clean decorative look. DHM: Where do you find inspiration aside from actual furniture and décor?

A Home for the

Holidays A Conversation with Interior Designer Mary Douglas Drysdale 44 ISSU E N O. 1 0

MDD: History. To borrow a line from T. S. Eliot, “that which we know comes from those who came before” (or something close to that). I have a wonderful library of books which I have collected for years and I refer to it often. I have learned from the best by accessing their work through books that share their thoughts and pictures of their work. I tend to be inspired by those in history who have taken a full and complete look at design and its elements, from Thomas Jefferson to Frank Lloyd Wright. It is the completeness of the work, as much as their individual talent, that makes their houses and buildings so memorable. DHM: What qualities do you think make a room really stand out? MDD: For me it is a remarkably difficult balance between completeness and iconic thinking. A room should be rich in idea,

balanced in application, and furnish the inhabitants with sufficient amusement or interest via view to an outside space or focus on an interior object or art work. I spend a good part of my day looking at things, there is no formula for this, but “memorable” is a quality that I ascribe to few rooms or places, and it is achieving this quality of specialness that for me makes a room stand out. DHM: How do you create a holiday ambiance in your home or in your client’s homes? MDD: Growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, we used to spend weeks decorating for Christmas. I think that in today’s world few of us have that kind of time to allocate to holiday decorating. I have a townhouse and only two smallish trees. I put white lights in the trees as many on my block do, which adds a festive look to the neighborhood. The nice thing about tree lights is that they don’t look stale after the first of January—people tend to keep them up all winter. The same cannot be said of an electrified Santa on the roof. A wreath is also an easy, highly decorative element that doesn’t need to come down quite so quickly.

make it personal and not to overwhelm the space. Christmas should be in your heart and in your mind, it is a time of sharing. Be generous, with your friends and family and those who are less well off. DHM: What are some quick fixes that can transform a home for the holiday season? MDD: I like to take everything that is not necessary in a room out, and then bring back only the things that you really need or really like one by one. Stop bringing things back in when you reach the “enough is enough” point. Reorganizing is a great mood lifter and always freshens a room, and Christmas is a great time of year to make a charitable contribution. Try rearranging your furniture, try one piece less or one piece more, and see if you feel more comfortable. Clean your space thoroughly and make sure that the baseboards and chair rails are done. Get an air cleaner (not an air freshening candle) and really make your house or apartment smell clean!

Make or get a new flower arrangement each week of the holiday season and place it where you and your guests will enjoy it. In a powder room or bathroom, get new towels if you can, and buy some candles to light up for holiday parties. Get some mint and thyme and other herbs and let those herbs infuse the scent of your home. If time and budget allow, re-paint a prominent area of your house. There is no decorating tool which can so quickly change the look and feel of a room. DHM: When it comes to the holidays, would you describe yourself as traditional? MDD: I like to remember the wonderful times I have had with my family and friends and I always want to honor the traditions of my community and friends. I always look to the future and plan for the best, and I recommend carrying the spirit of Christmas with one all year round and celebrating life every day! —Interview by Caitlin Moore

On the interior, I think holiday flower arrangements are lovely. I have never limited my person palette to green and red or blue. The holidays are, in my opinion, a time of sharing and celebration of friends and family that should not be governed by a predetermined color scheme. Over the years I have collected and made many ornaments which at one time I would put on a giant tree. I now make smaller arrangements for tabletop use and interior wreaths to display my collection of ornaments. I also like to just have a bowl of ornaments, like a bowl of fruit. In book shelves, I place ornaments and holly. Often I will add some holly to a chandelier, but only if the design is appropriate. People often stack books on tables and I have found interesting papers and made sort of architectural assemblies of decorated boxes to convey the season. The most important part of holiday decorating is to I SSUE N O. 10 45

Chadds Ford, PA Just 30 miles southwest of PhiladelPhia, along the banks of brandywine Creek, sits Chadds ford townshiP, a quaint village dating baCk to Pre-revolutionary times with a range of attraCtive destinations.

he award-winning Chaddsford Winery, the largest winery in Pennsylvania, is slowly but surely putting Pennsylvania on the map for American wine lovers. Founded in 1982 by Eric and Lee Miller, who learned the art of winemaking from their father at Benmarl Vineyards in New York, Chaddsford produces over 30,000 cases of wine annually. The winery hosts events and festivals for wine lovers all around the country.

T

History buffs can take in the sights at the Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site, a 50-acre park protecting the location of the 1777 Battle of Brandywine during the American Revolution. The Chadds Ford Historical Society, a volunteer-staffed non-profit, maintains three pre-Revolutionary buildings which are open to the public. Stop in and tour John Chads’ house and springhouse, which date back to 1725 and reflect the Chads’ Quaker heritage, and the Barns-Brinton House, built by blacksmith William Barnes in 1714. Chadds Ford is just a ten-minute drive to one of United States’ premier botanical gardens: Longwood Gardens. Longwood Gardens have 20 outdoor and 20 indoor gardens that feature fountains, exotic plans, and 11,000 different types of plants and trees. The Chadds Ford area was also the home of the great American artist and illustrator N.C. Wyeth, as well as son, the painter Andrew Wyeth, who founded the nearby Christian C. Sanderson Museum. Most of his collection is housed in the local Brandywine River Museum, owned by Wyeth family. Other attractions in the area include the Gilpin Homestead, a home dating back to 1754, and the William Painter farm, which was used —by Irem Cesur as a station on the Underground Railroad. Even for a lot of design aficionados, decorators and design students, Jean Michel Frank—one of the most important decorators of the 20th Century— is not a household name. Revered by international designers and collectors all over the world, Frank was decorator to society’s crème de la crème, both in Paris and America, though only for a very brief period: from the mid1920’s to 1941.

RemembeRing…

Jean Michel Frank

(1895-1941)

To this day, the rooms he did for the Vicomtesse Marie-Laure de Noailles in Paris, Nelson Rockefeller in New York, and Georges Born in Buenos Aires, just to name a select few, remain some of the most iconic and unforgettable spaces in the history of interior design. Ironically, iterations of his Parsons table, which he designed with the students of the Paris branch of the famous New York-based school, can be found in contemporary design collections ranging from the like of Hermès, to mass producers like Ikea and West Elm. This past September, while in Paris for the Biennale des Antiquaries, I visited for the hundredth time the tiny Guerlain shop located off the Place Vendome, designed by Frank and his partner Adolphe Chanaux. Every year, on my frequent visits to Paris, the shop is one of my first stops upon arrival. The excuse is to get Guerlain’s Eau de Cologne Impériale, but the real reason is to admire for a few minutes this temple of travertine “boiseries,” and to take in Alberto Giacometti’s plaster, shell-shaped pendants that were commissioned by Frank. I first discovered Frank’s work in the mid-seventies (long before I began studying architecture formally), through the pages of a few old decorating magazines at the library of the Alliance Française. And later, I devoured an issue of Architectural Digest featuring Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris apartment and an important article on Frank by Tiffany’s design director, Van Day Truex—he was responsible for getting Frank to teach in the Parson’s Paris branch. I discovered the perfecting style of the maître oublié. But what is the Frank-style? He learned from his mentor Eugenia Errazuriz to edit: the power of elimination in decorating. A Frank interior starts with “the emptying” of the room. Empty space is a luxury, but what was brought back in were antiques or new furniture designs by him or his collaborators: Dali, Giacometti, Emilio Terry, and Christian Berard were all rendered in luxurious materials and with the best French craftsmanship. Forms are quasi tribal, pure, and proportional. Color is either absent or it’s shocking and unexpected. Frank worked in millimeters. The materials: shagreen-covered tables and chairs, parchment walls, fireplaces of mica, straw marquetry walls and screens, raw silk, Hermès leather, wicker, forged iron and plaster, to name but a few. All was classic and yet reinvented. Comfortable. Calming. Atemporal. Frank committed suicide in New York in the early days of March of 1941. Jewish, homosexual, and with a history of family tragedies, the always elegant Frank had escaped Nazi Europe and fled to Argentina. I am fortunate to own two sketches by Frank, perhaps the only ones left by his own hand. Quite in contrast to my own skills, Frank didn’t really know how to draw, but he truly knew chic. — by Nestor Santa-Cruz Left: A Washington, DC area dining room by Santa-Cruz inspired by the work of Jean Michel Frank.
