New Youth Program a Real Slam Dunk

Young ballers now have the chance to practice their basketball skills in a fun and social environment, thanks to Council’s new Camden United Resilience Basketball (CURB) program.

The FREE program features a weekly two-hour session for people aged 10 to 18 years who live, work or study in the Camden area. The program will allow them to level up their basketball skills, build resilience and discuss wellbeing.

CURB runs every Tuesday from 3-5pm at Julia Reserve Youth Precinct in Oran Park. The program is an initiative of Camden Council, delivered with the support of The Y NSW and Big Yellow Umbrella.

There’s no need to register, and those who are interested can simply show up.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said CURB was a beneficial program for Camden’s youth.

“Julia Reserve in Oran Park is a fantastic facility, and it’s great that we’re able to utilise it with a great youth program like this,” she said.

“It’s a great way for young people to stay active, be social and find out about local support services available to them.”

CURB runs until 28 November. For more information, visit bit.ly/ camdenbasketball.

Camden Festival Returns

One of Camden’s favourite times of the year, Camden Festival, is back in 2023.

Running throughout September, major events Unlock Camden, Picnic in the Park, Kids Fun Day, and TASTE Camden will all make a welcome return.

At Unlock Camden on Saturday 2 September, Camden’s historic past will be unlocked through a number of heritage walking tours, vintage cars on display, garden games and much more throughout the area.

On Sunday 10 September, locals and visitors will descend onto picturesque Macarthur Park, Camden for Picnic in the Park. Soaking up the springtime air, attendees will enjoy garden games, kids’ activities, live music, and delicious food.

Later that week, on Wednesday 13 September, pre-school aged children will have a blast at the family friendly Kids Fun Day at Perich Park, Oran Park. Kids will enjoy live performances by some very special guests, activities, and a FREE barbecue.

Ending the festival’s major event schedule will be the signature event – TASTE Camden. The focus is on food with an abundance of food and drink vendors cooking up cuisines from all over the world. There’ll also be cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs, a licensed bar, music performances and much more.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said she was looking forward to welcoming everybody back to Camden Festival for 2023.

“Every year, September is a month I count down,” she said. “The winter cold disappears, the trees are looking beautiful, and we’re treated to the incredible Camden Festival.”

“I cannot wait to reveal more of what’s planned for the festival over the coming weeks and we definitely can’t wait to see everyone there.”

A Cruise for Charity

Camden Classic Cruise and Show-N-Shine rolls into Oran Park this month, raising much needed funds for charity.

Setting off on Sunday 17th September, the car cruise begins at Camden Airport, before journeying over Razorback to finish at Oran Park (opposite Oran Park Podium).

The charity event raises money for Camp Quality, who support 65 families and children in our area who have Cancer.

Camden Classic Cruise and Show-N-Shine was started by locals Robert and Rachel Elliott. The inspirational duo has already raised thousands of dollars for the charity.

“The cruise was created to give people a chance to spend time with their family on a country cruise, whilst raising money for a great charity, Camp Quality” explained Robert and Rachel to the Oran Park Gazette.

“It is a lot of fun. We meet at the airport; you are given a map and directions and then head off as a group. It takes about one hour, then we finish at Oran Park for a Show-N-Shine, where people can compare cars, have a chat, meet new friends, and maybe even win a prize” they continued.

It’s an annual event that the local community gets behind to support and they are looking forward to it.

“We love seeing the kids’ faces when they look at the cars and the proud owners who are showing off their pride and joys” Robert and Rachel said.

Locals are once again welcome to take part in the cruise, or to show up and get behind this important cause.

“You can enter your classic or corporate car by donating $50. Fundraise even more, as 100% of all the funds go directly to Camp Quality. Turn up from 11:00am, visit the cars, and make a donation” they concluded.

Rise N’ Dine, Gregory Hills’ newest restaurant may have only been open for a few short weeks, but it’s already proving to be a popular dining experience for locals.

Opening the doors on Monday 10th July, Owners Izzy and Sunil took over the site that was formerly Il Sapore. The restaurant offers Modern Australian cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Izzy has previously worked as a Manager in the food and hospitality industry, whilst Sunil is a Chef. Both have over a decade each of experience in the industry.

“We are two partners who are also friends operating the business. Sunil is a Chef who has worked for more than 15 years in the kitchen. I have also worked in the hospitality industry as a Manager for over 10 years” explained Izzy Kunwar of Rise N’ Dine.

“Sunil and I were both always interested in this industry. Whenever we met at gatherings, I had always seen Sunil’s passion in food and how he has enjoyed his career as a Chef. Years ago, we had a conversation about opening a restaurant and finally, after many years of talking about it, we managed to make it happen” he said to the Oran Park Gazette.

So far, the most popular dishes amongst the local community have included the Haloumi Stack, Rise N’ Dine Big Breakfast, Chilli Eggs, Lamb Back Straps Wrap, Burgers, Pancake Stack, Lamb Shanks, Prawn Risotto and Homemade Chicken Schnitzel.

You can find them on social media by searching ‘risendine2023’ on Facebook and Instagram and ‘risendinerestro’ on TikTok. They will be launching their new website, www.risendine.com. au soon.

Rise N’ Dine are located at HomeCo. Gregory Hills Town Centre, 33 Village Circuit in Gregory Hills.

Annual Fundraiser to Support Chargers

Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers RLFC will be holding their Annual Fundraising Dinner this month.

The event will be held on Saturday 30th September 2023 at Wests Leagues Club, Old Leumeah Road in Leumeah. Single tickets are $85, and a table is $800 (seating 10). Tickets are limited; however, they do have some still available.

“It’s an awesome night with loads of fun & laughs! We have a 3 course dinner, entertainment, raffles, and auctions” said Casey Gettings, Media Manager of Oran Park Gregory Hills Chargers RLFC.

“As our regular footy season finished in mid-August, it will be great to catch up with our Chargers families, sponsors, and supporters after a huge footy season. We can relax and have a fun night out, away from the footy field” she continued.

The Annual Fundraising Dinner is a huge boost for the grassroots rugby league club.

“It primarily allows us to celebrate our players and their success with an amazing end of year presentation with awesome trophies, food, fun, entertainment, and gifts for our players. In addition, it assists with the purchase of new equipment and playing kits for our players” explained Casey to the Oran Park Gazette.

With the regular season now over, the focus shifts towards finals footy. The Chargers are looking forward to 2024 and the celebrations planned for their 10th year anniversary.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to our players, parents, sponsors, and supporters for an amazing 2023 season! Next year, we will be celebrating ‘10 Years of the Chargers’ (20142024) and we hope to have loads of fun and surprises in store for our registered players to celebrate” she ended.

Registrations for the 2024 season will open from December 2023 at www.playrugbyleague.com.

See What Harrington Park Looked Like 100 Years Ago!

Over 4,600 historic plans of 460 regional towns in NSW — from Bourke to Bega — have just been digitised and made available for the first time on the State Library of NSW’s website.

According to the State Library’s maps expert, Maggie Patton: “Subdivision plans are an absolute goldmine for genealogists and local historians as they allow us to place ourselves in the past — on a street, in a town, where we once lived, where our ancestors established themselves.”

“What’s more, they are filled with fascinating details like property prices, town descriptions and sometimes a photograph,” says Ms Patton.

Subdivision plans were ephemeral items, usually discarded once a development site was sold. Luckily, the State Library has acquired and preserved these 100-year-old plans for the people of NSW and beyond, to access and use.

Dating from as early as the 1880s, up to the 1930s, the plans were produced by real estate agents and auctioneers to advertise new subdivisions and land sales. They range from hand-drawn surveyors’ plans to beautifully designed colour posters.

“They provide a fascinating visual record of how your town was imagined by town planners of the past, and how it has developed and expanded over time,” says Ms Patton.

“Some of the plans are annotated with sales figures, and you can see how public transport or access to shops, parks and local attractions influenced the popularity of a town.

“Estate agents used creative marketing strategies to entice people to regional locations by promoting special events with free transport, refreshments or entertainment for the kids.”

A 1914 plan of Newcastle promotes ‘a Garden suburb’, ‘a Triumph of town planning’, The Riverview Estate at Cowra is ‘one of the choicest residential estates in the progressive town of Cowra. One of the finest agricultural districts in the State’.

For the past 10 years the State Library has been progressively digitising its collection of 40,000+ subdivision plans of suburban and regional NSW with funding support from the NSW Government. These are now publicly available on the Library’s website. Order a print of your suburb

Subdivision plans make great gifts! You can order an archival print of any of the digitised plans from the Library Shop. Simply search your regional town at sl.nsw.gov.au/subdivision, copy the link of your chosen map, and send an enquiry to order your print at library.shop@sl.nsw.gov.au.

Less Stress and Tears: Tips for Shopping with Young Kids

Most parents have endured the sheer panic and embarrassment of having a child cry and scream in the middle of the supermarket. The good news is that shopping centre meltdowns can be prevented with a little pre-planning. Follow these tips for a more peaceful shopping experience.

Tip #1: Choose the time of day wisely

Consistent routines support young children to adapt to the rhythm of the day. Hungry or tired children are more likely to struggle with simple tasks. Avoid going to the shops during your child’s regular meal or rest times. If necessary, bring a packed snack to satisfy hungry tummies.

Tip #2: Enrichment, enrichment, enrichment!

Young children are little learning machines always curious to explore. Keep children busy at the shops by giving your child a simple shopping list, having your child pick and count items and/or pack bags at the counter.

Tip #3: Have simple ground rules

Before leaving for the day, give your child 1-3 simple ground rules phrased in the positive. For example, “we’re going to the shops this morning. You need to stay next to Mum/Dad the whole time and walk, not run.” Have your child repeat the rules back to you to check understanding. Afterwards, review the rules together to discuss what went well and what could improve future shopping trips.

Tip #4: Effectively use rewards

Parents fall into three traps when it comes to rewards: Too expensive, too far in the future and too vague. Young children live in the moment and will only connect behaviour to a reward when its immediate. Rewards don’t always cost money; often the best reward we can offer children is our time and attention. In explaining rewards to children, avoid vagaries like “be good”. You must outline which specific behaviours that will attract rewards. For example, “if you stay next to Mum/Dad for the whole shop, we will play at the park afterwards.”

Any young child can turn from a hindrance to a helper when given guidance, age-appropriate responsibilities, and effective rewards for cooperation.

Years

An amazing local sporting milestone has been achieved, with Oran Park Rovers FC celebrating their 10 Year Anniversary last month.

The Anniversary Celebration took place on Saturday 12th August 2023 at Doohan Reserve in Oran Park. Approximately 800 people attended the event, spread throughout the day. There were various food and refreshment vans, live entertainment, games, activities, and speeches which included presentations to some very well deserved members.

Speeches were made by Camden Mayor Ashleigh Cagney (Camden Mayor), Darcy Lound (Macarthur Football Association (MFA) Chairperson), and Colin Campbell (MFA Board Member). Also present was Cr Usha Dommaraju, from Camden Council North Ward.

“Thank you to the dignitaries and, most importantly, our past and present committee members, players, coaches, managers, parents and sponsors for making Oran Park Rovers FC not only a fantastic club, but the biggest in the Macarthur Football Association” said Jason Robbins, Secretary of Oran Park Rovers FC.

Jason is proud of the club’s history and the many who have helped shape it over the past decade.

“This club started very small back in 2014. With the hard work of past committee members, the club has grown from strength to strength, boosting about 1,200 players this season and 94 teams” he said.

“It is hard to single out every person who has made contributions to the club over those years, but you know who you are, and you should be very proud of your commitment and countless volunteer hours you have given” ended Jason.

Oran Park Rovers FC have their Junior and Senior Club Presentation Days planned for later this year.

A First for The George Centre: The New Private Hospital in Gledswood Hills

On Thursday the 2nd of August, The George Centre welcomed two new lives into the world – the first babies born in their new local private hospital.

Robin, a peaceful baby boy was delivered by caesarean section by Dr Yousif Kaisher and was the first baby to be born at The George Centre to Macarthur residents and first-time mum Bahar and dad Payam.

Dad Payam said, “We named our baby son Robin as we wanted a name that shared commonality with our Persian background and was also an Australian name. We also love the Persian meaning of the name which is ‘wise, learned’.”

Addison, a bubbly baby girl was the second baby (and first girl) delivered by caesarean section by Dr Saibal Ghosh to local mum and dad Sarah-Jane and Richard. Addison has an older sibling – a proud “big brother”.

“It was an exciting day for our healthcare team. The first babies delivered is always a thrilling time for everyone in a new maternity hospital.

“Most of all, it is great to know that the women in our community now have a choice to deliver their baby privately in the local area. Previously, their choices for private services involved their driving to Liverpool, Westmead, or Norwest, which is not ideal when you go into labour. Especially, given the uncertainty of the traffic on our roads and the time it may take to reach the birthing unit.

“We are also extremely grateful to be so well-supported by our local obstetricians, paediatricians and CMOs who have been pivotal in supporting our project and allowing pregnant women to have a choice”, said Michelle Stares CEO of The George Centre.

Get a Leg Up Before HSC Exams

With final exams right around the corner for high school students, Oran Park Library is hosting a number of FREE tutoring sessions.

Sessions will alternate for Maths and English weekly each Tuesday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, until 19 September.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney said students would find the sessions incredibly helpful.

“We know that the HSC can be a very stressful time for students, and so we want to do what we can to ensure they feel as prepared as possible,” she said.

Cr Cagney offered some words of advice for students about to undertake their exams in October and November.

“To our Camden area students who currently have their heads in their books, I’d like to wish you the best of luck,” she said.

“I’d also like to encourage you to try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Your ATAR will not shape your life and there are always pathways to get you to where you want to be. If there is something you want to accomplish and you put your mind to it, you can get there regardless of your test results.”

Bookings aren’t necessary, and students who live or study in the Camden area can simply show up. For more information, visit library.camden. nsw.gov.au.

Accolades and Achievements for our Local Rotary Club

It might be one of the youngest Rotary Clubs in Sydney, but the Rotary Club of Gregory Hills, Next-Gen is already making its mark both in the local community and even further afield, recently named ‘Club of the Year’ for Rotary District 9675, which includes 55 Rotary Clubs across the area from central Sydney to Picton and down as far as Wollongong and Kiama. What does Rotary do?

“Rotary” is an international service organization, with a human rights focus. They aim to bring together people from all walks of life, with a shared common purpose of making life better for those around them, from their local community to around the world.

The Rotary Club of Gregory Hills, Next-Gen, formed in 2018, is made up of local people from diverse backgrounds, ages, jobs, cultures and interests. They meet at the Wests Country Club, Gledswood Hills twice a month (the 1st and 3rd Wednesday) to plan their fundraising and projects, and to hear from speakers and other changemakers who want to make a difference in the world. So far in 2023, the Club have supported projects including:

• Camden Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research

• Shining Stars Foundation homelessness and community outreach

• The Rotary Clubs of Macarthur’s ‘First Responders Awards’, recognising Emergency Services personnel in the local community and,

• ROMAC – Rotary’s medical aid program providing surgical treatment for children from developing countries in the Pacific region.

Recognising not just the great work being done, but the atmosphere of welcome and encouragement being created in their relatively new Club, the Rotary District Governor recognised them with the prestigious ‘Club of the Year’ Award at a recent event at the St George Motor Boat Club.

In July, the Club appointed their new Board for 2023-24, with Nursing Manager from Westmead Children’s Hospital, Nicole Davenport being installed as Club President. She is joined on the Board by local solicitor Sarah Searle, former Australian of the Year Local Hero, Rosemary Kariuki, and other enthusiastic Club members who have stepped up to take on Board roles this year. The Club always welcomes new members and would love to hear from anyone in the community who would like to learn more about how they can get involved. Visit their Facebook or Instagram page or call on (02) 9136 6349 and start a conversation.

Even amidst the growing number of houses and infrastructure being constructed across our local area, we are blessed to live in a part of the world where we still have places and spaces where we can connect with nature: from our parks, ponds, and sporting grounds, through to the Mt Annan Botanic Gardens, our farmlands, natural riverbeds, and nature reserves are all spaces around us where we can enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

During September we are invited to ‘re-connect’ with creation and to celebrate the Season of Creation – that is an annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home. This Season begins on September 1st (the World Day of Prayer for Creation) and ends on October 4th (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi) and celebrates the joy of creation, as well as encourages awareness-raising initiatives to help us to heal and protect Our Common Home. The theme this year is “Let Justice and Peace Flow”. The Prophet Amos cries out: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:24) and so we are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice, and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity.

Creation never ceases to proclaim to us. We celebrate in the awareness that our world is suffering deeply from numerous environmental crises as well as conflict in many regions. These global crises are interconnected and affect millions of people but are experienced most deeply by the poor and vulnerable. The earth is crying out to us, but are we listening now to the Book of Creation?

May this Season inspire us and strengthen us in our efforts to protect our common home. To watch a YouTube clip about the Season of Creation go to: https://bit.ly/seasonofcreation2023

One and Done

What do you find yourself doing repeatedly? Taking the rubbish out? Hanging the washing on the line? Feeding your favourite furry friend? At some stage this repetition can get well beyond your pain threshold - just ask the kids what they think of emptying the dishwasher!

What about messing up? Saying a word that you wish you could take back. A bad habit that you persist in. A relationship where your actions hurt another. And those other things we rightly call sin.

Do we ever tire of them? And what do we do with the guilt? For some it might be to go a little harder in the gym. Maybe it’s to deny yourself something good. Some might pray and try to do something extra good to work off that bad feeling.

Well before the time of Jesus, the Jewish people had a system of sacrifices to acknowledge their sins.

The people knew that God’s punishment for sins was death and so the response to regular sin was regular death. Not their own - but that of a pure animal in their place - usually a lamb. In this way they would be reminded of sins terrible price and then, well, they’d have to do it again. That was both wearying and costly.

The Bible notes, day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again, and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But then Jesus came. He lived a perfect sinless life and died on the cross in our place as the pure sacrifice. Now the repetition could be done away with. Why? For by one sacrifice, he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

The joy of knowing Jesus is that whilst we might have to repeat many things - having our sins forgiven isn’t one of them. Jesus has done it all. Ask Him about yours.

PROBUS CLUB

If you are retired or semi-retired and would like to join a social club for fun and friendship, have you thought about joining a Probus Club? Probus Clubs offer their members a range of talks from speakers, activities, outings, and tours. Why not come along to a General Meeting of Oran Park Probus Club and find out more?

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month (except November) at the function centre of Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Gledswood Hills, starting at 10.00am. Visitors may attend three meetings, activities, or outings before deciding whether they’d like to join the Club.

The Speaker at our August meeting was Nick Gleeson, author, adventurer, and speaker, who attended with his seeing eye dog Jervis. Nick has accomplished so much since a terrible accident caused him to become blind at the age of seven. He took up athletics and has run at three Paralympic games, the New York City Marathon, and the Empire State building - all 1576 steps. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Everest to 6,000 feet, trekking through the Simpson Desert, and bungee jumping are amongst Nick’s many endeavours. A ‘Living Life My Way’ ambassador, Nick is an inspirational speaker as well as a mentor to people with a disability. It was a privilege to hear him talk about his life.

Members of Oran Park Probus Club enjoy activities like the regular ‘Coffee and Chats’, Pub lunches, cultural dining, craft, movie days and trivia. A recent coach outing to the Sydney Zoo, near Blacktown, was followed by lunch at Merrylands Bowling Club, enjoyed by all who attended and, the weather was perfect. A whale watching day out at Jervis Bay is planned for September with more at the planning stage.

The next meeting of Oran Park Probus Club is September 5, followed by October 3. Come as a visitor and see if our activities would interest you or think about starting a new group yourself if you have a favourite hobby, once you become a member!
