Roger Completes 50th City2Surf

Wallacia resident, Roger French, participated in his 50th City2Surf in August, just 3 weeks before his 85th birthday.

His time was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 46 seconds. While he came 64,068th out of 73,046 runners/walkers who finished, out of the 67 that were aged 80+, he came 36th. But he finished!

Roger was in the first City2Surf in 1971 (at age 31) when he came 832nd in 66 minutes and 21 seconds, with around 1,500 runners in total. His personal best in all his 50 runs was 55 minutes and 10 seconds. This was on 14th August 1977 at age 37 and was only 15 minutes outside the record for the City2Surf.

He has missed just five runs altogether. This has included two when he was overseas (one of these trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea), two when he was injured and one when he was recovering from a cold.

Besides being fit, he is well all-round. He takes no medications and is free of all the illnesses which plague most older people – arthritis, diabetes, bowel problems, stroke, heart disease, and cancer.

Roger attributes his good health and fitness to his long association with the Natural Health Society of Australia which, for 65 years, has been providing education about diet and lifestyle, based on key lifestyle research from the last 170 years. This was also implemented at the Hopewood Health Retreat in Wallacia from 1960, to when it closed in 2015.

Roger suffered numerous colds and flu and even blood poisoning in his younger years and stayed at Hopewood in his twenties, when he did a thorough detox. He has never looked back.

Roger doesn’t limit his challenges to the City2Surf. Last year he and his wife, Elizabeth, participated in two 500km supported bike rides, one from Canberra to Parkes in NSW and the other the Great Victorian Bike Ride where Roger was the oldest of 2,500 participants.

“I am not concerned about great longevity, but while I am on the planet, I want to be well and able to enjoy life. I reckon that chronic illness with its pain is one of the toughest bosses on the planet. However, it so happens that longevity tends to follow healthy lifestyle anyway,” says Roger.

If you would like more information about Roger’s lifestyle, check out the Natural Health Society of Australia at www.health.org.au.

Understanding Snake Activity this Season

With Spring now upon us, Western Sydney residents can anticipate increased snake sightings in bushlands, grasslands, backyards, and houses. The snake season traditionally falls between September to March, but often varies due to temperatures.

Sean Cade, from Australian Snake Catchers, has over 20 years of experience and assures residents that these encounters should be viewed as informative rather than alarming. “Snakes are mostly present for shelter or food and are generally just passing through a property,” Sean explained.

The Sydney Basin is home to a diverse range of snakes. “Most people in Western Sydney will come across the Eastern Brown Snake, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, and the Golden Crowned Snake,” Sean said. Other snakes in the Sydney Basin include the Broad Headed Snake, Tiger Snake, Marsh Snake, and Death Adder.

Sean offered some basic tips to minimise the chances of encountering snakes:

• Avoid approaching snakes.

• Refrain from trying to catch or harm them.

• Ensure children and pets maintain a safe distance.

• Clear any clutter or trash around your home.

• Maintain clean lawns and store firewood at a distance from the house.

Correcting common misconceptions, Sean explained that the presence of a Red Bellied Black Snake doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t encounter an Eastern Brown Snake. “This is a common statement which is incorrect. If the snakes are a similar length, they cannot eat each other. And Eastern Brown Snakes will also eat a Red Bellied Black Snake,” he said.

Sean’s dedication to his profession stems from a love for wildlife and a passion to share the wonders of native fauna with his children. “Although many are hesitant to deal with snakes, they play a valuable role in our ecosystem. They, like any animal, sometimes need assistance,” he said.

“Snakes don’t need to be feared. With a little understanding they are quite fascinating creatures. This time of year, they are breeding also and are quite active,” Sean explained.

“Due to urban development, encounters may increase due to habitat loss” he added.

Penrith Relay For Life Returns This Month

Penrith Relay For Life is back for 2025. Registrations are now opened for Saturday 13th September 2025 at Harold Corr Oval, starting at 11:00am and finishing at 10:00pm.

They have a new location for 2025. This year’s Penrith Relay For Life will be held at Harold Corr Oval, 32 Herbert St, Cambridge Park.

Penrith Relay For Life has been running for the past 22 years and the Penrith Community has raised over $4.3 million. Thank you for your support!

The money raised provides groundbreaking Cancer research, local support programs for Cancer patients as well as Cancer prevention programs in local schools and community groups.

Organised by passionate local volunteers, Penrith Relay For Life gives the community a chance to join forces in support of everyone affected by Cancer, to have fun at a community festival, and raise vital funds towards Cancer Council’s worldclass research, prevention, advocacy and support services.

“We have seen a large spike in demand for our support in the Western Sydney region, but a fall in fundraising to support the cause. With Cancer Council’s services needed more now than ever before, we need our local community to get involved” said Community Fundraising Coordinator, Yvette Haines.

They are also looking for local businesses to sponsor their event.

Penrith Relay For Life 2025 will still have all of the special key relay elements, including: opening ceremony, survivors and carers lap of honour, entertainment and their very special ‘Hope Ceremony’. Silverdale Shines: New Shopping Centre Grand Opening

Silverdale marked a major milestone on August 9th, with the grand opening of the long-awaited Silverdale Shopping Centre, a project decades in the making and a true testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and community spirit.

The event drew an impressive crowd of dignitaries, business leaders, and local residents, with The Hon. John Howard OM AC attending as guest of honour. His presence added an air of national significance to the day, underscoring the importance of the achievement not only for Silverdale, but for the broader region.

At the heart of the celebration was the remarkable story of local businessman and community leader, Bruno Lopreiato.

Bruno’s business acumen and commitment to community earned him wide recognition, including induction into the 2008 Macarthur Business Hall of Fame and being named a Home Bulletin Hero for his longstanding contributions to the region. His leadership style has always been defined by vision, generosity, and a deep personal investment in the people of Silverdale.

The concept for a new shopping centre took shape in 2009, when Wollondilly Council approached Bruno to create a larger, modern facility with more services and improved parking. “It took a long time to get to this point,” he told the opening day crowd. “I’m sorry it’s taken so long, but I want to thank the community for their patience, trust, and support.”

For Bruno and Maria, Silverdale is more than a place of business — it has been their home since 1986. They have consistently invested their time, resources, and energy into building not just shops, but a community hub that reflects the values and aspirations of its residents.

The new Silverdale Shopping Centre, officially opened on August 9th, stands as a proud symbol of their commitment and vision. The state-of-the-art complex offers a vibrant mix of shops and services designed to meet local needs well into the future. With plans for Stage 2 already on the horizon, Bruno’s work in shaping the town’s growth is far from over.

As the celebrations drew to a close, one thing was clear — this was far more than a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It was the crowning achievement of a man whose dedication has shaped a community, and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Silverdale’s story.

SILVERDALE SHOPPING CENTRE A HIT WITH LOCALS

I’d like to pass on my congratulations to everyone who contributed to the opening of the new Silverdale Shopping Centre.

I’ve been receiving some fantastic feedback from the local community about the convenience and fantastic service.

The centre includes a Woolworths and 27 specialty stores, and I’m looking forward to seeing this project grow into a local retail precinct.

Thank you to former Prime Minister John Howard who made a special appearance.

Also, to the owners Bruno and Maria Loprieto who have worked tirelessly to make the project happen.

And lastly congratulations to 25 organisations that have been awarded grants under the Australian Government’s 2024-25 Volunteer Grants Program.

$10 million was made available to 151 electorates, with more than $66,000 of that allocated to the electorate of Hume to support the efforts of volunteers.

Dilly Doggy Day Out Coming to Bargo

Celebrating the bond between dogs and their owners, one of Wollondilly’s most popular events, the Dilly Doggy Day Out is moving to Bargo this year.

The event is scheduled for Sunday 14 September and will run from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Bargo Sportsground, Radnor Road.

The much-loved community event has been running since 2018, with hundreds of humans and their fur babies attending throughout the day.

Mayor Matt Gould said, “Dilly Doggy Day Out is a great event for local families and animal lovers. It highlights the work that the Wollondilly Animal Shelter does and provides the community with a fun day out to discover local vendors and suppliers and enjoy an array of activities.”

“The new location at Bargo Sportsground will provide even more space for all the pet-related market stalls, specialty talks and presentations, agility demonstrations and doggy competitions,” he said.

Free dog microchipping will be available on the day, along with grooming, veterinary health checks, a pooch photobooth, dog caricatures, kids’ activities and more.

Council staff will be on hand at the event to provide advice about registering your pet and microchipping, along with information about the pets available for adoption at the Wollondilly Animal Shelter.

Cricket Season Nears for Mulgoa

Valley

The Mulgoa Valley Cricket Club is eagerly preparing for another exciting summer, with the 2025/26 season officially set to kick off on Saturday 20 September.

Registrations are open, with the club encouraging interested players and families to reach out via mulgoa. cricket1@gmail.com or through their Facebook page to get involved or learn more.

Last season saw 43 senior players represent the club across two teams in the Nepean District Cricket Association’s 3rd and 6th Grade competitions. Highlights included standout individual performances, with Anthony Cutajar scoring his maiden century and James Knowles claiming a hat-trick. Mulgoa’s bowlers also delivered five five-wicket hauls throughout the season.

In a gripping 6th Grade campaign, captain Ernie Schinella led his team from equal last at mid-season to a dramatic grand final appearance — their third in as many years. Despite falling just short to Emu Plains in the final, their turnaround remains a proud achievement for the club. Meanwhile, the 3rd Grade team remained competitive in a tightly contested season, narrowly missing the finals.

Looking ahead, the club is hopeful to field two senior teams once again — with potential for a third team depending on numbers — and will also host another season of Cricket Blast, a fun, inclusive Friday night program for kids aged 10 and under. Sessions will run 6:15pm to 7:15pm from Friday 17 October at Sales Park.

Mulgoa Valley Cricket Club continues to grow as a familyfriendly, community-based club, passionate about cricket at all levels. For those interested in joining the 2025/26 summer season, the club welcomes enquiries and new faces.

For more information, contact: mulgoa.cricket1@gmail.com or visit facebook.com/mulgoacricket.

Warradale FC and Mulgoa Valley FC Join Forces

Grassroots football in Western Sydney is set for a boost with the announcement of a new partnership between Warradale Football Club and Mulgoa Valley Football Club. The Joint Summer Soccer Competition and Future Field Sharing alliance will see the clubs combine resources to deliver a vibrant, familyfriendly summer competition, while also sharing fields, lighting, and facilities during Warradale’s home ground upgrade in 2026.

For Warradale FC President Steve Keller, the alliance is more than just a practical solution.

“This is a really exciting partnership,” Steve said. “It brings together our players, volunteers, and resources to deliver a bigger, better, and more inclusive summer competition. We needed a ground for the 2026 winter comp, so we reached out to Mulgoa — Ben and Ed didn’t hesitate to help. We’re lucky to have such a great club nearby willing to work alongside us.”

The collaboration was born from shared values of community, inclusivity, and growing the game locally. The timing was ideal, with Warradale needing a temporary home while Waterboard Oval undergoes significant upgrades.

“Over the years, Warradale’s summer soccer has been a highlight for our community,” Steve explained. “Teaming up with Mulgoa means more teams, more competition, and a bigger community feel. Clubs aren’t enemies — we’re all here to give football to as many people as possible.”

The Summer Soccer Competition kicks off at Gow Park, Mulgoa, on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 October 2025, running for 10 weeks. Age groups from juniors (6/7s through to 14/15s) will play Thursday nights, with all-age seniors competing Wednesdays.

Ben Crowther, President of Mulgoa Valley FC is equally enthusiastic about the joint effort. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for players from both clubs to mix, form new friendships, and enjoy football in a fun, social setting,” he said.

The partnership also ensures Warradale’s players have a “home” during the upgrade period, maintaining continuity and enthusiasm across all age groups.

“We’re not just keeping football alive — we’re giving it a boost,” Steve said. “I can’t wait to see everyone at Gow Park in October for what I believe will be the start of something longlasting between our two clubs.”

Book Review Your

All-Day Nightmare

Author:R.L Stine

All-Day Nightmare is a choose your own adventure book by R.L Stine. Its storyline revolves around you having terrible nightmares at night, but waking up in an abandoned, strange house with another boy, whom you decide to call Max, as both of you can’t remember a thing about yourselves, not even your own name! You are then faced with your first choice: answer a knock on the door, or leave it? From there, the story warps into different storylines.

With dozens of choices, you are spoilt for choice… literally. The storylines range from finding out you and Max were victims of an alien abduction, and the aliens brainwashed you. Somehow, you crashed their spaceship, and they’re coming for you. Or are you and Max werewolves, you and your wolf pack being chased by hunters? Finally, are you and Max secret agents, trapped between which side to join. The choice is yours, with over 20 endings, all written to make sense according to the storyline.

In most of the endings, you and Max find your real identities, and how you came to be there. I myself enjoyed the alien storyline the best. Overall, All-Day Nightmare delighted me with its fragilely written storyline, and I would highly recommend it.

The Power to Forgive

Last month, I wrote about how evil is the biggest problem in the world. It’s not just “out there” in corrupt systems or in ‘bad’ people, it’s also in each of us. We all contribute to the evil in our world.

But the problem doesn’t stop there. Jesus taught that one day each of us will face God’s justice for what we have done (Matthew 12:36). That makes this not just a global problem, but a deeply personal one.

What can we do about it? The obvious answer might seem to be: “Stop being evil!” But there are two problems with that. First, no matter how hard we try, we can’t stop doing wrong. Second, even if we could, what about the things we’ve already done?

What we really need is forgiveness, forgiveness from God Himself. One of the most staggering things Jesus did was offer exactly that. The religious leaders of His day were shocked. They asked, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:6). They were right! Only God can forgive the evil we have done.

Jesus could offer forgiveness with God because of who He is: God’s one and only Son. He was fully human, yet also fully God. He came to bring forgiveness to people who desperately need it.

And here’s the amazing thing: His gift of forgiveness is available to anyone, no matter what they’ve done. You can’t earn it, and you’ll never deserve it. That’s the whole point, forgiveness is a gift!

How To Stretch Successfully – But Without The Pain

To stretch effectively, you should pretty-much do the complete-opposite of what most people do. That is, you should:

1. Stretch regularly (just once-twice a week will do),

2. Spend time on each stretch,

3. Use slow deliberate stretching technique,

4. Avoid any pain,

5. Relax into the stretch,

6. Use regular & deep breathing,

7. Never force the stretch

Technique:

For a left hamstring stretch, bring your left leg onto a table (10–15 cm higher than your knees; higher if you’re very flexible). Keep your left leg straight and draw your left foot toward you. Bend forward at the hip, keeping your back straight. See if you can touch your toes or stretch past them, then come out of this “test” stretch.

Now bend your left arm at the elbow. Keeping your back straight, bend forward at the hip again until your left elbow rests on your left thigh, back remaining straight. Slide your elbow toward your left foot until you feel a good stretch in your

left hamstrings (but no pain). Relax, breathe in and out deeply and regularly, and wait until the stretch completely subsides and you’re comfortable in this position (this may take 30–60 seconds—just be patient). Now slide your elbow further forward along your thigh until you again feel a strong stretch, but no pain. Stop there, repeat the same deep, relaxed breathing until you cannot feel the stretch. Continue this for 4–6 cycles (more if you like).

Once you’re happy with the number of stretching cycles you’ve completed, test how far your left fingers or hand move past your toes now. You should find that you have a significantly greater range of motion in your left hamstring than when you started. Now repeat the same for your right hamstring.

Note: People with lower back issues should stretch their hamstrings lying down to avoid straining their back.

This technique allows you to gently fatigue the hamstring muscle spindles. It takes a little more time, but only needs to be done once a week and is likely to be much more successful long term—and not painful! If you have a back or musculoskeletal injury and need help, why not give Andreas a call at the clinic on 0418 166 269.

Choosing the Right Boarding Facility for Your Pet

Did you know there are now less than 20 weeks until Christmas? That means it’s the perfect time to start thinking about boarding arrangements for your furry family members. Boarding facilities and trusted pet sitters book out quickly during the holiday season, so planning ahead will save you stress later.

As local veterinarians, we’re often asked where to find the best boarding kennel, cattery, or dog sitter in the area. At Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, we understand that sending your pet away can be a worrying experience for both you and your pet. Choosing the right place — one you can trust and that understands your pet’s needs — will give you peace of mind.

Your search for the perfect boarding facility might begin with asking your local vet, but it shouldn’t end there. A great next step is to check with friends for personal recommendations, especially from those who have pets with similar personalities or needs to your own. You can also review kennel or cattery websites, but nothing beats arranging an in-person visit. A reputable facility will welcome you to meet the staff, see their set-up, and observe happy, relaxed boarders already enjoying their stay.

Before booking, remember that most boarding kennels and catteries require pets to be up to date with their vaccinations. If your pet hasn’t been vaccinated in the past year, this must be done at least two weeks before their stay. It’s also wise to apply your pet’s regular flea and tick prevention before admission and

ensure their microchip details are current.

If your pet has special dietary requirements or needs medication, discuss these with the facility in advance. By planning ahead and communicating clearly, the staff can ensure your pet’s stay is as smooth and stress-free as possible. It’s also important to leave an emergency contact and your regular vet’s phone number, particularly for pets with ongoing health concerns.

When it’s time to check your pet in, keep your goodbye short and confident. A long, emotional farewell can make your pet anxious. At Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, we’re happy to help make the process easier — we can arrange updates via email or Facebook so you can relax knowing your pet is enjoying their own little holiday while you enjoy yours.

And remember — at Orchard Hills Vet, we can look after your feline friends too, so they can enjoy a safe and comfortable stay while you’re away.

Boarding spaces for Christmas are already filling fast. If you’d like to discuss your pet’s boarding needs or vaccination requirements, phone us on 0247362027 to secure your spot.

Last month, the Geographical Names Board opened community consultation on a new suburb proposal from Western Sydney Airport Co. Advocates say placing the entire airport precinct within one suburb will streamline service delivery and simplify public wayfinding. The proposed boundaries run from Elizabeth Drive in the north to the Badgerys Creek Environmental Conservation Zone, with Bradfield forming the southern edge. If approved, the change will redraw the lines for Badgerys Creek, Bringelly, Luddenham, and Greendale. Western Sydney Airport Co. has suggested naming the suburb Cabrogal, in honour of the Cabrogal people of the Dharug language group. Linguistically, “Cabrogal” combines cabro (an aquatic woodworm) and the suffix –gal (“men”), and thus translates literally as “woodworm men.” While well-intentioned, the literal meaning feels disconnected from both the airport and the broader district. Many residents say they first encountered the proposal by chance. Limited media coverage of the Geographical Names Board’s public notice left much of the community unaware of the boundary changes and name selection process.

During August, significant upgrades have taken a 2.2 km stretch of Elizabeth Drive from a one-lane road to a three-lane dual carriageway. This transformation increased road safety by significantly easing congestion for the 28,000 vehicles that drive this route daily. As well as tripling the roadway for motorists, these upgrades also included a bridge that will stretch over the new Western Sydney Airport metro line and Worimi Drive. The rest of the road needs to be done now.

Airservices Australia is leading the detailed design and implementation of airspace and flight paths for Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. This phase refines approved routes through simulation testing and comprehensive safety assessments. To share progress and gather feedback, Airservices is hosting pop-up and drop-in community sessions

as well as webinars. Residents can attend any time during the four-hour events—just register your interest at https:// collections.humanitix.com/wsi-flight-path-engagements.

Upcoming September sessions:

• Penrith – Monday, 1st

• Warragamba – Tuesday, 2nd

• Horsley Park – Wednesday, 3rd

• Narellan – Friday, 5th

• St Marys – Wednesday, 10th

As spring begins to bloom, September brings a fresh sense of renewal across our community.

Local parks and gardens are bursting back to life, making it a perfect time to enjoy the outdoors.

This month also marks Father’s Day celebrations, school holidays, and the return of community markets and festivals.

Keep an eye out for local events, spring clean-up initiatives, and small businesses featuring in this issue. As always, we love hearing your stories, so if you have something to share, drop us a line.

Let’s continue to support one another by showing up, lending a hand, or simply sharing a smile. Whether it’s a fundraiser, a school fete, or a neighbour in need, it’s the little acts of kindness that strengthen the heart of our towns. Together, we can make this season one of positivity, progress, and genuine community spirit.

Here’s to a vibrant and connected September! “Wherever life plants you, bloom with grace.”
