Draft EIS, Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport Penrith City Council welcomes the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to understand the plans to mitigate the impacts on residents and the environment with the opening of Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport. This release of the draft EIS is a significant step towards realising the great opportunities the airport will bring for our City through increased jobs, infrastructure and investment. Penrith City Council encourages the community to find out more about the airport, the EIS and flight paths by attending one of the Australian Government’s community information events. There are a number being held locally in the coming weeks, more information is available here: https://www. wsiflightpaths.gov.au/visit-us “Penrith City Council is learning about the EIS at the same time as the rest of the community. I want to reinforce that Council needs time to understand the comprehensive document, including the impacts on our residents and the environment, and the measures proposed for mitigating how it will affect residents and the environment.” said Penrith Mayor Todd Carney. “I encourage the community to seek out their own information on the EIS too and to attend one of the community information events, and make a submission on what they would like to see from the EIS.” he ended. r Article: Penrith City Council

Remembrance Day Memorial Service for Warragamba This month, on Saturday the 11th of November is Remembrance Day. There will be a Remembrance Day Memorial Service held at the Warragamba Memorial Park at 10:45am and everyone is welcome. With the Service being held on a Saturday, a bigger turnout is expected. The Warragamba ANZAC Committee are currently planning their next project to raise funds to purchase other war memorabilia. In 2018, it saw the group unveil the six-foot bronze statue of the lone soldier, that now proudly adorns Warragamba Memorial Park. They would like to thank this year’s sponsors, for their valued support. This includes Steins Plumbing Solutions, Farrugia Transport, and Buttigieg Excavations. “We would like to acknowledge our yearly sponsors. Without these companies donating each year, it would be really difficult to hold such a great Anzac Day and Remembrance Day Service” said Hellen Dillon, member of the Warragamba ANZAC Committee to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The Committee also now have a new trailer, complete with ANZAC murals, thanks to the kind support of local businesses. “A special thank you to Athcon Landscapes and Pools and Downstream Group for the fantastic purchase of a beautiful trailer” she stated. They have asked that the local community are vigilant in keeping the Memorial Park safe, including the bronze statue. “Each year, we have this service to pay our respects to all the fallen men and women we have lost at war. Without their sacrifice, we would not live in this beautiful country” Hellen explained. For more information about the Remembrance Day Memorial Service, search ‘Warragamba ANZAC Committee’ on Facebook or email them at warragambaanzaccommittee@gmail.com. r The new ANZAC inspired trailer | Image: Hellen Dillon

Local Dr’s Widdle Tester Last month, Karen McKeown MP (Member for Penrith) was on hand at Terry White Chemmart in Penrith to support men’s health, with the launch of local Dr Adrian Sheen’s cup-like invention called the Widdleometer. The Widdleometer serves as an ‘early warning system’, uniquely designed to help men determine if they have a problem passing urine. Inventor Dr Sheen, who has worked as a family doctor first in Glenmore Park, then Mulgoa for over 40 years, has seen people die far too soon. “I had a patient who died far too young, because his prostate enlarged and eventually this caused his kidneys to fail. If he had an easy way to test his ‘flow’, he might have been encouraged to go to his doctor and be checked out earlier. The end of his story could have been different”, he said. The Widdleometer can be used by men in the privacy of their own home, to check if they have a ‘slow flow’. If they do, Dr Sheen advises they go to their doctor for a medical check, as the problem could be due to an enlarged prostate or bladder. Every year, about 8,000 men suddenly find they are unable to pass urine and find themselves in emergency at hospital. Dr Sheen believes that if men realised they had a problem, this number would be reduced. There are many causes of a ‘slow flow’ in men, but the most common is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BHP). This is when the prostate gland is enlarged, but not cancerous. The Widdleometer is a simple tool that men can be encouraged to use to look after their own prostate health and test themselves to check for ‘slow flow’. With early symptoms, they can get medical treatment from their doctors before it becomes cancerous and requires serious treatment. BHP is a significant health problem for men. It is estimated that about 50% of men aged 50 and about 80% of men aged 80 have an enlarged prostate. Dr Sheen hopes that the Widdleometer will encourage men to get active about their own health. “Don’t be in denial”, he said, “test yourself and go for further tests with your doctor if the Widdleometer indicates you have ‘slow flow’. It’s all about men’s health!” The Widdleometer is available for $49 at Terry White Chemmart, 447 High Street, Penrith, and is also available to purchase online on Amazon. r Dr Sheen at the launch of the Widdleometer | ImageSupplied

Nanna’s Sweet Legacy

Wollondilly’s best kept secret is Windy Oaks Produce. Winner of the Outstanding New Business Award at the recent 2023 Wollondilly Local Business Awards, they make specialty jams, marmalades, preserves, pickles, relish, chutney, sauce, cakes, and cookies. As well as seasonal products such as Christmas Cakes, Traditional Plum Puddings and Gingerbread Houses. Windy Oaks Produce also hold cooking workshops, teaching people to make Christmas puddings, scones, and strawberry jam. It was started in February 2022, by owner Debbie Sharp. “Most of my recipes are from my Nanna’s recipe book. Nanna emigrated from the UK in the early 60’s, so there are quite a few traditional English recipes that have been well used over the years. She taught me the importance of flavours, especially when preparing the Christmas Pudding. Nanna always used to say, “pickle your fruit before you bake”, you have to soak your fruit in plenty OP Rum and Brandy for at least 3 months before baking” explained Debbie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Debbie has added to her extensive list of recipes and given an Australian twist to some of them, by using traditional bush tucker flavours like Wattle seed, Lilly Pilli, Rosella (Hibiscus Flower) and Lemon Myrtle. “I use the best quality fruit and vegetables sourced from our local farmers. Good quality produce enables me to reduce the sugar content, due to the natural sugars occurring in the produce. My jams, marmalade, pickles, and chutneys are preservative free. I also cater for Gluten Free customers” she replied. She regularly asks for feedback from customers on her products, ensuring that they are satisfied with the quality. If a customer has a special request, Debbie will endeavour to make it for them and have it ready for the next market day. “I provide workshops to teach people how to cook. I have had an excellent response to the workshops so far. My most recent Christmas Pudding workshops were a huge success. Everyone enjoyed the festive atmosphere, whilst learning how to prep and steam their own pudding. I received wonderful feedback of how lovely their puddings tasted” Debbie smiled. She is now in the process of planning workshops for 2024, to include scone making, jamming, and pickling. You can purchase her products from Camden Fresh Produce Markets every Saturday. The Oaks Fruit Shop and The Merchant in Camden also carry a selection of stock. For more information, search Windy Oaks Produce on Facebook. rWindy Oaks Produce products | Image: Debbie Sharp

Connecting with Kids: The Power of Love Languages Have you ever considered the power of Love Languages when it comes to connecting with your children? The concept, originally coined by Dr. Gary Chapman for couples, has evolved into a valuable tool for parents and caregivers to build strong, loving bonds with their children. Understanding Love Language Love languages are all about how individuals both give and receive love. Identifying your child's primary love language, or a combination of two, can significantly benefit your parent-child relationship. It ensures that your child not only knows they're loved, but also feels it deeply. The Five Love Languages and Their Application to Children: 1. Words of Affirmation: Expressing love, praise, appreciation, and encouragement through words. Connect through words of affirmation by saying "I love you" often, acknowledging your child's achievements, leaving sweet notes in unexpected places, and sharing what you love about them. 2. Quality Time: Providing your child with focused, undivided attention shows you love them and value their company. Connect through quality time by engaging in conversations, enjoying activities, scheduling one-on-one time, and prioritising family meals. 3. Physical Touch: Children thrive on loving physical touch, especially during infancy. Connect through physical touch with hugs, kisses, cuddles, playful activities like wrestling, holding hands, and story time. 4. Gifts: For some children, receiving a physical gift symbolises love and affection. It's about the thought and effort behind the gift. Connect through gift giving by selecting items aligned with your child's interests, surprising them with thoughtful gifts, and creating treasure hunts. 5. Acts of Service: Doing things for your child to make them feel cared for and special is another love language. Connect through acts of service by preparing special meals, engaging in their favourite activities, assisting with tasks, and completing their chores. Understanding your child's love language is a valuable tool to show love and nurture, and it helps you notice when your child is expressing love. Being aware of your own love language but responding in your child's love language can further strengthen the parent-child bond. Take the Love Language Quiz with Your Child. It's a fun way to connect and learn something new together: https://5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/love-language r Image: www.pixabay.com

Luddenham Apprentice Wins Trip to France in National Baking Championship In a stunning achievement, Luddenham’s Carla Penza has been crowned National Champion at the Bake Skills Fine Foods Festival held at the ICC in Darling Harbor in September. The festival, held from September 10 to 12, saw Carla dazzle judges with her extraordinary skills and impeccable creations. “The Bake Skills Fine Food Festival was the national round for the competition. Prior to this, I competed in a regional round in early July. Winning the regional round, I then progressed onto the national. There was quite a lot involved in this competition. Certain criteria needed to be met for each product regarding size and particular brands of products supplied by the sponsors,” explained Carla. Over the intense three-day competition, Carla skilfully created a diverse range of items, including Mille Feuille, Paree Brest, Eclairs, Profiteroles, Seafood pies, Vol-au-vents, and sweet tarts. She also showcased her expertise with palmiers, cheesecakes, mousse entremets, and a unique specialty cake. Winning an all-expenses paid trip to France for 6 days, Carla’s achievement ensures she will get a chance to immerse herself in the French culinary scene while attending Sirha Europain, an exhibition for bakery and pastry professionals in France. “All the extra hours of training, the tears, and the constant feedback from my employers has all paid off. I’m still in disbelief,” said Carla. Beyond this illustrious win, Carla also garnered attention in late September, being awarded the RAS (Royal Agricultural Society) Award for Champion Apprentice Student. “The RAS Award is held in conjunction with the Sydney Royal Easter Show. For this competition, I entered petite fours,” Carla explained. Her entries included Passionfruit Meringue Tartlets, Opera Slice, and Strawberry, Pistachio, and Rhubarb Tartlets. Looking ahead, Carla is eager to continue learning, absorbing, and exploring the trade as there are endless possibilities to gain from such a massive industry. “It has taken me a lot to get to where I am today in my career. I just want to thank everyone who has supported me in any way shape or form to get me where I am today,” Carla ended. r Feature Article [Cover] (L-R) Rosemary Penza, Carla Penza, and Russell Penza – Bake Skills Win [Above] Champion Apprentice of the Sydney Royal Easter Show | Images: Supplied

LATEST @ LUDDENHAM Article Written + Submitted by: Wayne Willmington E: c/- info@districtgazette.com.au | Subject ‘Latest @ Luddenham’ In October, Luddenham experienced a major land sale, involving the 200-acre site on the corner of Northern Road and Willmington Road, opposite the IGA. This site, once known as ‘Blue Hills’, was originally a dairy farm owned by the Clugstons, and later became one of Australia’s first Christmas tree farms in the 1980s. It was sold by Colliers, who noted high global interest with 219 inquiries. They anticipate the buyer has long-term development plans, but action may take a few years. Numerous trees have been cut down on Park Road to create a path for a new pipeline, nearly 1 metre diameter, which will extend from the recently established Advanced Water Recycling Centre in Kemps Creek to a treated water release location near Wallacia Weir on the Nepean River. This facility will be processing wastewater from both residential and commercial sources, including Luddenham, producing high-quality treated water that will be pumped into the Nepean River for environmental flow. In October, the Luddenham Progress Association conducted its Annual General Meeting, during which the following individuals were elected to serve as officials for the upcoming year: • President: Carolyn Wong • Vice Presidents: Wayne Willmington & John Willmington • Secretary: Jenny Schweers • Treasurer: Glen Marsden Luddenham Progress are looking for new members, they meet in the Progress Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 8pm. Local Luddenham pastry chef, Carla Penza, competed in the National Bakes Skills Pastry Competition that were recently held at the ICC Darling Harbour. After three days of baking, the judges awarded Carla as the Best Pastry Apprentice for 2023. For her efforts, she has won a trip to Paris. Well done, Carla. In October, we received sombre news of the passing of Reg Bower. Reg and his family relocated to Luddenham in 1978 and were very community minded. Reg’s wife, Margaret, served as Show Secretary for numerous years, while Reg held the role of President of the Show from 1998 to 2007, and Vice President for a period. He also initiated the cherished tradition of taking Santa around Luddenham on Christmas Eve in a horse-drawn cart, giving out lollies to local children. Rest in peace, Reg. The voting outcome for the recent referendum in Luddenham was as follows: 56 votes in favour (Yes), 348 votes against (No), and 7 informal votes.

New Mayor, Deputy Elected to Lead Penrith Penrith Councillor Todd Carney was recently elected as Mayor of the City for the first time at September’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, with Councillor Mark Davies elected as Deputy Mayor. Councillor Carney succeeds Councillor Tricia Hitchen in the role and will serve a one-year term as Mayor, taking him through until the Local Government Election in September 2024.   The shortened term is a result of the one-year postponement to Local Government Election in 2020 due to the pandemic, with the cycle returning to its prescribed four-year term again in 2024. Born and raised in Western Sydney, Cr Carney was elected to Council in 2016 and calls Glenmore Park home with his wife and three children. Starting an apprenticeship as a heavy vehicle mechanic at the age of 16, he is now a Service Manager for a leading international crane manufacturer and has served as an electorate officer for the then Lindsay MP, David Bradbury. The newly elected Mayor thanked his Councillor colleagues for the opportunity to serve in the role. “I have been asked what my priorities will be over the next 12 months – that’s a hard question to answer as we have a list of delivery programs underway with projects like Regatta Park, City Park, our day-and night-time economies, the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct and our WestInvest city transforming projects,” Cr Carney said.   “However, like my predecessor Cr Hitchen, I have a keen focus on St Marys and what opportunities we can leverage there with the (Western Sydney Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and metro rail line.”   Cr Carney said Council has started to lay the foundations for a strong future through the St Marys Structure Plan but there is more work to be done.   “St Marys Central Park will be fantastic, and we have an opportunity to build on this, to give people a place where they can work, live, and play. Our community is crying out for dining options, and we also need to continue discussions with the business community… we need to get the planning right.”   Outgoing Mayor Tricia Hitchen thanked those who had helped her during what she recalled as “a memorable Mayoral term.” Cr Hitchen said she was in the role just a few short weeks before the City was devastated by a wet weather event, causing severe flooding in parts of the region and ‘major’ flood warnings for the Nepean River. During her term, she saw residents reunite at Council events that reactivated Penrith and St Marys, and she opened key pieces of infrastructure up to the community. Cr Hitchen called for the delivery of the City’s first accessible changeroom, which opened in 2017 along High Street. There are now six changing places facilities throughout the region, with more to come.   Her passion for supporting domestic violence victims, which stems from her 25 years of service in the NSW Police Force, led to the Mayoral Charity Ball which saw Council and the community band together to raise a remarkable $60,000 for The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter in May.   “I will be forever grateful to everyone who contributed to help so many of these local women and their families on the path to a safer, brighter future,” Cr Hitchen concluded. Cr Mark Davies was elected as Deputy Mayor at the September Ordinary Meeting. Cr Davies joined Council in 2004 and served as Mayor from 2012-2013. r Deputy Mayor Mark Davies and Mayor Todd Carney | Image/Article: Penrith City Council

PAWS A WHILE Article Written + Submitted by: Kellie Tickner from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Celebrating Vet Nurse Day Recently the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital celebrated Vet Nurse Day. This annual event marks an important day for the veterinary industry and general public to acknowledge the vital role that vet nurses play within the veterinary team. The day was celebrated with a staff lunch, lots of gifts and flowers and of course everyone’s favourite, Subway cookies ! Our veterinary nurses entered the profession because they love animals – but nursing is a whole lot more than just cuddling cute puppies and kittens. Our experienced nurses are knowledgeable, technically skilled, compassionate and willing to assist whenever an animal, or client, requires help. Here’s a list of a few of the tasks that a veterinary nurse will regularly have to perform in a single day! Anaesthesia- Veterinary nurses will gently restrain animals in order to place intravenous catheters and, if required, collect blood samples for pre-anaesthetic health testing. They will calm and restrain a patient whilst they are being anaesthetised and then will capably monitor parameters, such as heart rate,

breathing rate, blood pressure, reflexes and body temperature to ensure that the patient experiences a safe anaesthetic. Patient Care - When animal patients stay in hospital, it is our experienced nurses who will perform ongoing checks on them throughout the day (between assessments by our vets), ensuring that they are provided with all the care and cuddles that is needed. Diagnostic Procedures - Our nurses are proficient in running in-clinic laboratory tests, including blood tests, urine tests and faecal analysis. This allows us to diagnose many common health conditions on site, so we can start prompt treatment for our patients. Assisting Our Vets - Last but not least, our nurses provide valuable support to our vets, providing hands-on assistance during important medical, surgical and imaging procedures. They also look after the ‘pet parents’ who may be worried for their fur-baby. Our nurses are of vital importance in achieving our goal of high-standard, compassionate animal care at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Let’s hear it for all the veterinary nurses!

Local Yoga Instructor Offers Health and Wellness in Mulgoa A Mulgoa local, Melinda Biag, is on a mission to promote health and well-being in her community through her yoga classes. With four years of experience under her belt, Melinda’s inspiration for teaching yoga stems from her desire to find relaxation amidst her busy life as a mother of five and a hairdresser of 29 years. “I wanted to create good habits and develop skills and knowledge to help my body be more flexible as health is my priority and this helps me to raise wellgrounded children,” said Melinda Biag. “It was important for me to be more grounded and maintain mobility as being a hairdresser is a lot on the body over time. My pain is gone, and I no longer have that sore back and pain in my legs like before.” Melinda offers yoga classes at The Bunker in Mulgoa every Thursday from 9am to 10am, with additional kids’ classes on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm. A new class has also been introduced on Thursdays at 10:30 am at Mulgoa Park. Ensuring that her classes are accessible to everyone, children’s classes are priced at $15, adults pay $20, and seniors (with a valid card) can join for just $15. For a limited-time special offer in 2023, attendees can bring a friend and pay only $15 each, while seniors can bring a friend for just $10 each. Classes typically include a warm-up, joint exercises, a slow-flow sequence, and personalised adjustments based on the participants’ needs. She welcomes individuals of all ages and experience levels, making her classes accessible for beginners. The health benefits of yoga are numerous and well-documented. “If you’re going through illness, recovering from surgery, or living with a chronic condition, yoga can become a part of your treatment and potentially hasten your healing,” said Melinda. She explains that yoga can aid in back pain relief, reduce arthritis symptoms, improve heart health, promote relaxation, and enhance sleep quality. It’s especially beneficial for older adults, helping them improve balance, reduce the risk of falls, and maintain mobility and flexibility. For more information about Melinda Biag and her yoga classes, you can follow her on Instagram @melindabiagyogaandwellness or contact her directly via phone or text at 0405286440. r

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 47331635 A: 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 W: www.gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am It is this time of year that we all start getting ready for Christmas. Food, decorations, and presents are all on the radar. Gifts are so much part of what it means to celebrate Christmas. However, according to economists, Christmas is a huge devaluation of goods and services. People place a lower dollar value on a gift than it cost the giver. Do that enough times and millions of dollars is lost in value to our community. Apparently, the solution is that it is best to give cash. Imagine that Christmas Day rolls around and just exchange cash. Weird, right? There must be more that’s going on than just valuing goods and services. So, what is it? A gift is an expression of a relationship. When you receive a gift, it shows that a person cares for you and loves you. When you give a gift, it is a sign that you care and love the other person. There is more going on than the gift itself. The summary we often say is, “it is the thought that counts.” Giving is a display of the value of a relationship and it is hard to place a value on a relationship. At Christmas, we remember the gift God gave us in the birth of Jesus Christ. The gift of Jesus is a display that God loves us and cares for us. It shows the most important thing is a relationship with the creator of the universe.

Could Eating Germinated Barley Help Ulcerative Colitis Patients? Butyrate is a small fatty acid and main food for cells lining the colon. When healthy, these cells provide a strong protective lining for the colon. Without butyrate, colon cells slowly die. This leaves areas of colon without protection and the tissue underneath directly exposed to faeces. Areas of colon without this protective lining constitute the “ulcers” in ulcerative colitis. Butyrate is normally made by bacteria that live in the colon. Indigestible fibre from the vegetables and grains we eat passes through the digestive tract into the colon, where colonic bacteria work in teams, using the fibre to make butyrate. Many UC sufferers have abnormally low levels of “butyrate” in stool. Researchers asked whether butyrate production by colonic bacteria could be increased by feeding patients appropriate fibre-containing-foods. In a 4-week open-label study, scientists gave patients suffering active UC, 30g/day of a high fibre-food supplement called “Germinated Barley” (GB), a side product of beer production. Patients were kept on standard UC anti-inflammatory medications. The rationale behind the experiment was that: 1. Fibre from germinated barley, once in the colon, could be efficiently utilised by Bifido- and Lactobacilli bacteria to produce lactic acid and acetate (vinegar), 2. these compounds would then be taken up by other gut bacteria to make the ‘bowel-health-promoting’ butyrate in a process called cross-feeding.

16 November 2023

www.mulgoagazette.com.au

Scientists found that after 4 weeks on germinated barley, patients had greater concentrations of butyrate in their stool, were clinically better, and endoscopic examination showed patients bowel walls looked significantly better. No patients had any negative side effects. The same scientists then did a controlled study in which 18 patients with mildly to moderately active UC, for 4 weeks, were given either: 1. baseline anti-inflammatory therapy (7 patients) or 2. 20–30 g GBF daily, together with the baseline treatment Patients receiving germinated barley showed: 1. significant clinical improvement 2. no side effects. And a representative patient on GB underwent: 1. microbial stool analysis - showing increased concentrations of: a. Bifidobacterium (acetate producing bacterium) and b. Eubacterium limosum (butyrate producing bacterium). 2. colonoscopy showing significant improvement in bowel appearance. Authors concluded oral therapy with germinated barley could be an effective adjunct therapy to reduce clinical signs and symptoms in UC patients. r **Refer to: www.districtgazette.com.au for expanded version

Quality Care and Respite: BaptistCare’s Retreat for Dementia Caregivers

82a O'Connell St Kingswood My Mum and I enjoyed a very delicious lunch at Poppi Tino in Caddens. Upon arrival, we were kindly greeted by Vinnie, who walked us over to a very comfortable booth. We ordered some sparkling water to begin our lunch. After reading through the menu and asking Vinnie for recommendations, Mum and I were keen to try the honey drizzled halloumi, topped with crushed pistachios. It was delightful. The blend of pistachios and honey glaze provided a perfect mix of sweet and savoury tastes to the halloumi. While I wasn’t a fan of halloumi served like this in the past, I would certainly choose this appetiser again. For main dishes, I selected the Risotto Gamberi, made with prawns, cherry tomatoes, basil, roquette, white wine, roasted garlic, and Napoli sauce. The prawns were cooked to perfection, and the cherry tomatoes introduced a delightful sweetness. The risotto, enriched by the white wine and Napoli sauce, had a savoury taste that was complemented by the fresh basil and roquette. The roasted garlic added a subtle depth of flavour that tied everything together. Overall, it was a delicious meal that I would highly recommend. Mum chose the Fettuccine Chilli Crab and Prawn, a combination of blue swimmer crab, prawns, cherry tomato, chilli, and herbs. She enjoyed the dish and said it was spicy. I sampled some of her dish and was delighted by the flavourful crisp prawns. The added chilli further enhanced the already delicious meal. I will be ordering this dish for myself next time. Both dishes were served with chilli oil and parmesan. For our sweet finale, we decided to share the flavourful tiramisu. To end our impressive lunch, we couldn’t resist sampling the coffee. The flat whites we ordered were velvety, creamy, and free from bitterness. Poppi Tino earns a perfect ten out of ten from me. I wish to thank Vinnie and his Team for their exceptional hospitality.

From November 21-23, BaptistCare will be holding its second, free retreat for people living with dementia and their carers in Mulgoa. The Refresh Retreats program will see carers and their loved one living with dementia attend a three-day and twonight retreat for some well-earned time to relax, unwind and receive practical support. While carers enjoy some rest time and an education program to equip them in their caring role, their loved ones also receive quality care and a range of activities led by BaptistCare’s experienced staff. “BaptistCare at home are running ‘Refresh Retreats’ to equip carers with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to care for somebody living with dementia at home, whilst their loved ones receive quality care and a simultaneous program of engaging activities,” said Nicole Donohoo, Allied Health & Development Manager Home Services with BaptistCare. Caring for a loved one with dementia is an emotionally and physically taxing journey and self-care is crucial for those who carry this responsibility. With the Australian Department of Health and Welfare estimating that there are between 137,600 and 354,200 unpaid primary carers supporting people living with dementia, it is essential to ensure that these caregivers feel adequately prepared and supported. “Early support through respite programs can have positive impacts on the long-term care of someone living with dementia and the quality of life and wellbeing of their caregivers,” said Nicole. Fully funded by the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care, the Refresh Retreat in November will be held at a local conference centre in Mulgoa and there is no charge to attend. The Refresh Retreats are available to people living with dementia who are supported to remain at home, either from a co-residing carer or one residing at a separate address. To register for this upcoming Refresh Retreat, please contact BaptistCare on 1300 275 227 or visit https://baptistcare.org.au/ refreshretreats. r Education, support and respite for carers and their loved ones | Image: BaptistCare

Prefabricated vs Custom Orthoses So, a biomechanical assessment has determined that orthoses are required*. Let’s look at the benefits and limitations of the two main types of orthoses for support. Prefabricated Orthoses Most medical-grade prefabricated orthoses are made from ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), a type of rubber. Some have a plastic stabiliser added. Pros • a good option for patients needing low to moderate support • the softness of the rubber means it can be supportive and comfortable for a wide range of foot shapes • re-mouldable at low temperatures, so it can be modified to accommodate issues • can be modified with material additions or grinding equipment • cheaper option in the short-term • can be fitted immediately Cons • not suitable for patients requiring more support • not 100% ideal as they are not moulded to the foot shape, so the pain may take longer to resolve, or there may not be complete relief • can lose their shape over time when feet get hot in shoes • bulkier in shoes as rubber must be thicker to provide support • wear out quicker, more expensive in the long-term if they need to be replaced regularly Custom Orthoses Custom orthoses can be made from anything the patient needs! The best support is achieved using a polypropylene (PP) core, which is a semi-rigid plastic. We are asked all the time if this feels hard underfoot, but if moulded properly to the foot shape (we find plaster casting is better than the foam box or scanning methods) and providing the right kind of support, you’ll forget you are even wearing them after the initial adjustment period. Pros • moulded to your foot shape to provide optimum support • requires less thickness to provide support so not as bulky in shoes • durable, so they last longer and can be cost-effective in the long term • stronger material for people who are heavier on their feet or very active • re-mouldable at higher temperatures so will not break down in hot shoes • can be covered with a wide range of different materials to provide cushioning or protection without loss of support from the PP • easily cleaned, great for wet environments Cons • wait time of a couple of weeks for devices to be made • more expensive in the short-term r Image: Supplied * For general information only – a healthcare professional must be seen for tailored advice

Understanding Snake Activity this Summer As Summer approaches, Western Sydney residents can anticipate increased snake sightings in bushlands, grasslands, backyards, and houses. The snake season traditionally falls between September to March,

but often varies due to temperatures. Sean Cade, from Australian Snake Catchers, has over 20 years of experience and assures residents that these encounters should be viewed as informative rather than alarming. “Snakes are mostly present for shelter or food and are generally just passing through a property,” Sean explained. The Sydney Basin is home to a diverse range of snakes. “Most people in Western Sydney will come across the Eastern Brown Snake, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, and the Golden Crowned Snake,” Sean said. Other snakes in the Sydney Basin include the Broad Headed Snake, Tiger Snake, Marsh Snake, and Death Adder. Sean offered some basic tips to minimise the chances of encountering snakes:

• Avoid approaching snakes. • Refrain from trying to catch or harm them. • Ensure children and pets maintain a safe distance. • Clear any clutter or trash around your home. • Maintain clean lawns and store firewood at a distance from the house. Correcting common misconceptions, Sean explained that the presence of a Red Bellied Black Snake doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t encounter an Eastern Brown Snake. “This is a common statement which is incorrect. If the snakes are a similar length, they cannot eat each other. And Eastern Brown Snakes will also eat a Red Bellied Black Snake,” he said. Sean’s dedication to his profession stems from a love for wildlife and a passion to share the wonders of native fauna with his children. “Although many are hesitant to deal with snakes, they play a valuable role in our ecosystem. They, like any animal, sometimes need assistance,” he said. “Snakes don’t need to be feared. With a little understanding they are quite fascinating creatures. This time of year, they are breeding also and are quite active,” Sean ended. If you need expert and secure removal of snakes or reptiles, reach out to Sean and his crew through their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/australiansnakecatchers/ or call Sean at 0410761575 or Freya at 0452492836. v Sean with an Eastern Brown Snake | Image: Australian Snake Catchers

Last month, Australians were asked to vote on the proposal to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. According to the Australian Electoral Commission website a record 97.7% of eligible Australians were enrolled to vote. Official results can be found here: https://aec.gov.au/ referendums/ November has arrived, and that can only mean one thing......Christmas is closer than you’d care to believe. I know I start out with every good intention to plan and prepare well in advance, and somehow, one way or another...... I end up battling the crowds of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve! Consider this your notice, it will sneak up on us! Remembrance Day falls this month, and serves as a reminder that the freedoms we appreciate today were secured through the sacrifice of others. Take a moment on the 11th to honour the brave men and women who have served. Lest we forget. ‘You are the artist of your own life. Don’t hand the paintbrush to anyone else.’ Time for a cuppa!
