Council Welcomes Announcement of Promised Second High School for Wollondilly – Opening in 2027

Wollondilly Shire Council has warmly welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government that a promised second high school for the Shire will now be built and open its doors for students in 2027 at Wilton.

Mayor Matt Gould was delighted to receive the news that the long-awaited high school, planned to be co-located with the new primary school in Fairway Drive at Wilton, will now be delivered for the growing Wollondilly community.

“Council, our community, and our local member have been calling on the State Government to provide a second public high school in Wollondilly for many years now. This positive outcome shows what good quality advocacy can achieve,” he said.

“Congratulations to Judy Hannan MP for pushing on behalf of our local residents to get this result, and to the Department of Education for listening to us and to the families of Wollondilly.”

“We expect there will be over 100,000 more residents moving into the Wollondilly Shire over the next 10-20 years with the State mandated growth centres at Wilton and now Appin. Access to education for Wollondilly’s children is one of Council’s key advocacy priorities, which has become even more urgent with the growth upon us.”

“Until now we have only had one public high school in our local government area and it is at capacity. Many students on the fringes of the Shire travel outside of the area, spending hours each day to get to school.”

“I look forward to seeing this new school built at Wilton and, along with Picton High, providing the high standard of education that our young people deserve here in the Wollondilly Shire.”

Wollondilly Shire Council remains committed to securing quality education facilities that align with the needs of local families and the growing population and will continue working closely with the NSW Government to ensure further commitments are made to meet the educational needs of our community.

A Tiny Home with Big Potential

Cherie Barber, TV personality and renovation expert, and Tiny Home Solutions have come together for a special collaboration. Locals were treated to Cherie’s Tiny Home Open Inspection in Mulgoa last month, on Saturday 12th April.

Cherie Barber collaborated with Tiny Home Solutions to design and construct her tiny home. This is a modified version of their best-selling Cooper design, with Cherie Barber’s unique touches to material selections and styling.

The Cooper is a best seller for a reason, it is cosy yet comfortable, featuring in booth dining, a spacious living room and a double loft. The bayview window in the kitchen allows for optimal natural lighting and connection to nature. This is the perfect sanctuary.

With the process taking around 12 weeks, from design to material selections and construction, tiny home design is taking centre stage with helping to address the housing crisis which is causing people to look for alternate solutions to affordable housing, either for themselves or for their family members.

The popularity of building tiny homes is growing, and it doesn’t look to be slowing down.

“Firstly, the housing crisis is causing people to look for alternative solutions to affordable housing, either for themselves or for their family members predominantly. Secondly, people are shifting to a minimalistic lifestyle and are enjoying the flexibility of being able to move around in their home” explained Maddison Crain of Tiny Home Solutions.

Cherie Barber already has some exciting plans for future projects with Tiny Home Solutions.

“Cherie is looking at designing some modern pods with Tiny Home Solutions that can be dropped into any backyard!” said Maddison.

She is also renovating 2 big properties locally. Watch this space!

Silverdale Author Challenges Perceptions

Renowned for her unwavering integrity and fearless advocacy, local Silverdale author Dr. Kathrine Grover delivers a powerful and confronting memoir, Nurse Blood. Released in February 2025, Nurse Blood is more than a memoir – it is a bold expose of the hidden fractures in Australia’s healthcare system, told from the frontline by a nurse and midwife of over 50 years.

In her career marked by care, compassion, and confrontation, Grover has faced challenges most could scarcely imagine –bullying, harassment, depression, PTSD, and the emotional toll of fighting for patient safety in the face of resistance. Her story, already explored in her interview with Ray Martin on A Current Affair, serves as a sobering wake-up call: behind the public image of dedication lies a system often unwilling to confront its own failings.

“I am not a whistleblower,” Grover says. “I am a strong patient advocate who will protect those under my care from harm”.

In Nurse Blood, Grover lays bare the realities many healthcare professionals endure, from institutional silence around adverse patient outcomes to the steep personal price paid by those who speak out. Her commitment to truth and justice – values instilled by her upbringing – lead to media scrutiny and professional roadblocks. Yet, as she states, she remains “unrepentant”.

This book will spark conversation, challenge perceptions, and demand accountability. It is a clarion call to policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the public alike to acknowledge the silent battles nurses fight daily and the urgently needed systematic changes.

Kathrine Grover’s Nurse Blood is not just her story; it is a legacy for those who have been silenced, a resource for future social science students, and a reminder that truth-telling can change lives – even at great cost.

Real Agents. Real People. Giving Back

At Aitken RE, community isn’t just something they talk about - it’s something they actively support and invest their time in.

As a local business, they believe in giving back to the people and organisations that make our region strong, connected and compassionate. From ongoing partnerships with Penrith Community Kitchen and Penrith RSL’s annual Christmas gift drive, to participating in Movember through both donations and team involvement, their commitment to making a difference is a cornerstone of who they are.

They also understand that small actions can have a big impact. That’s why their team regularly participates in blood and plasma donations, supporting the vital work of Lifeblood. In addition, they proudly support Samaritan’s Purse by acting as a donation collection point and contributing as a team. Most recently, they’ve expanded their support by becoming a dropoff location at two of their offices for Mama Lana’s Community Foundation, helping ensure essential supplies reach those who need them most.

In addition to their charity work, they are proud sponsors of several local sporting organisations that help build strong community spirit and promote healthy, active lifestyles. These include the Wallacia Golf Veterans Association, Warragamba Wombats Rugby League, Cambridge Park Rugby League, and Warradale Football Club. These causes matter deeply to them. They represent more than charity - they reflect the values they hold as a team: compassion, responsibility and a strong desire to support the wellbeing of our wider community.

At Aitken RE, they believe that when businesses and people come together to support each other, they create a better future for everyone. They’re proud to stand with our community.

Haulin’ the Hume a Success

Western Sydney Historical Truck Club’s (WSHTC) Annual Haulin’ the Hume event took place last month, which saw 320 entrants and a convoy of trucks depart from Luddenham Showground enroute to Gundagai.

Haulin’ the Hume went from Saturday 12th to Sunday 13th April, and is a historic road run following the Old Hume Highway out of Sydney to Yass, whilst raising funds for charity.

The Friday before the event saw the registration and parking of the 320 trucks entering at Luddenham Showground. A dinner was provided by Western Sydney Historical Truck Club (WSHTC). On Saturday, the day of the run, the last registrations were held, and breakfast was catered by the Pioneer Timber Cutters. At 6:30am, when their traffic controllers were in place, they proceeded to leave the Showground, with the last truck being the Haulin’ the Hume trailer.

The convoy then proceeded as much as they could down the Old Hume Highway, with a lunchtime stop at Goulburn Showground. Lunch was supplied by the Rapid Relief team and marshalling co-ordinated by Peter and Michelle Caldow, who as well as being members of the club, are also involved in the Convoy for Kids in Goulburn.

After lunch, they headed south through the Cullerin Ranges and into Gunning. After rejoining the freeway, they turned into Veterans Road and proceeded on to the now privately owned sections of the Old Hume Highway, with the landowners generously opening their properties to allow them access.

They rejoined the freeway again and turned into Yass Valley Way, going through Yass. Diverting through Jugiong, they then headed back onto the freeway to Gundagai.

“The thing we enjoy the most about this event is the camaraderie of so many like-minded people with the same passion for preserving trucking history. Seeing the people waiting on the side of the road, young and old alike, giving us waves of encouragement was amazing” said Andy Nash, Event Organiser of Western Sydney Historical Truck Club’s (WSHTC).

They would like to thank the local businesses who assisted them with the event. Kennards Hire Penrith, BTW Communications and GRS Towing.

“Without the generosity of these businesses, our event would not have been as great of a success. Also, thank you to our Committee. Without their tireless efforts, this event wouldn’t happen” he ended.

Talk To Me Bro: Warragamba Walks the Talk on Mental Health

On Wednesday 2nd April, the Warragamba Town Hall came alive with purpose and connection as the community gathered for the launch of the Talk To Me Bro mental health awareness initiative. Organised by Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre in collaboration with Stein’s Plumbing, Walk It Off Warragamba, Talk To Me Bro, and Horse and Harpy, the event was a heartfelt reminder of the importance of mental wellbeing and community support.

The day kicked off with a community walk led by “Walk It Off,” setting a positive tone as locals strolled through Warragamba in solidarity. The event continued with breathwork exercises, oneon-one chats, and powerful group conversations facilitated by Talk To Me Bro team members.

“It was more than just an event,” said Josh Stein of Stein’s Plumbing. “It was a safe space where people could share, listen, and be heard—without judgment. We’re incredibly proud to be part of this initiative.”

The message was clear: we all have a role to play in reducing the stigma around mental health and creating a culture of openness and empathy.

The organisers have no intention of stopping there. Upcoming events include an Easter Saturday giveaway at Warra Dam Café, where Stein’s Plumbing will hand out free eggs, vouchers, and hampers to spread community cheer. On May 9th, they will also take part in Do It For Dolly Day at Livvi’s Park, featuring fun, meaningful activities designed to spark important conversations about mental health and anti-bullying.

“Whether it’s big or small, every gesture counts,” said Josh. “As a local business, we’re proud to use our platform to raise awareness, create connections, and be part of a movement that truly makes a difference.”

The organisers extend heartfelt thanks to all supporters, including the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre, Walk It Off, Horse and Harpy, and especially the community members who showed up with open hearts.

This is just the beginning of a movement in Warragamba—one where community, compassion, and conversation lead the way.

Plant a Tree for Mum

Penrith’s beloved Trees for Mum event is celebrating eighteen years this Mother’s Day.

Penrith City Council’s annual Trees for Mum community tree planting event returns on Sunday 11 May at Caddens Road Park, Claremont Meadows from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney is excited to celebrate such a significant milestone for the City’s beloved Mother’s Day event.

“The longevity of Trees for Mum is a testament to how important an event such as this one is to our community and I’m proud that our residents remain passionate about conserving our local bushland,” Cr Carney said.

“Penrith is one of the only local government areas that has continued to host this special event and our Bushcare team is excited to not only be running its eighteenth year, but to be celebrating such a meaningful day with community members.

“Planting a tree is such a simple gesture to honour your mum, grandmother, aunt or a mother-figure in your life and can be a very positive and meaningful experience to share with family and friends on Mother’s Day.

“Trees for Mum is not only a great way to gift something special, but it’s an opportunity to learn about our local environment and help restore our endangered bushland by planting native trees or shrubs,” Cr Carney said.

The event will be divided into 30-minute sessions. The first session will start at 8:30am with the last session at 12:00pm. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. Sunscreen will be available on the day.

The native trees and shrubs available for planting are proudly provided by Council’s nursery.

To ensure there are enough trees for everyone to plant and so the Penrith Council Bushcare team can coordinate the 30-minute sessions, please book your attendance by registering at penrith.city/events.

in Christopher Cartwright’s Sam Reilly series, and it does not disappoint! The book follows Sam Reilly and his circle of adventurous friends who are trying to stop the Relic Hunter from getting her hands on the Elixir of Life. If she succeeds, the Relic Hunter will use the Elixir to raise an army of ancient metallic insects that will wreak havoc on the world at her command. It takes all of Sam and his crews’ combined skills, planning and fancy Bond-like technology as they attempt to protect the unsuspecting tourist who stumbled across the Elixir accidentally while visiting an old church in Ethiopia, and prevent the Relic Hunter putting her plan into action.

The author brilliantly weaves twists and turns into every chapter and you never quite know what is around the corner. There are near misses, faked deaths, gotchya moments and sprinkles of humour as Sam and his crew navigate all the challenges to protect the tourist and foil the Relic Hunter’s plans. I also thoroughly enjoy how the author paints really descriptive pictures of the key locations in the story, which you can tell are the result of having researched those places and the folklore that surrounds them.

This was a highly enjoyable and unpredictable read. After enjoying this book so much I have started to read the Sam Reilly series from the beginning – but this book gives a really good flavour for the style of story you’ll get if you want to embark on the full adventures of Sam and his crew, which I highly recommend!

Celebrate Mum

This year, as Mother’s Day rolls around, it holds a special significance to me. For many years, Mother’s Day was a two-part event. The first part is the phone call to my mother, and to the women who have been mothers to me in my life. The second is a quick trip down memory lane as I recall some of my favourite Mother’s Days with my own daughter over the years and, if she’s not working away, perhaps a trip out for a meal together.

This year things have changed. My dearest mum has struggled with health problems, and we are left wondering just how many more Mother’s Days we will be gifted to celebrate with her. How can we make this one special? If this is the last one, what can we do to make it a joyful celebration, a memory to flood our hearts with love in the relentless repeat of Mother’s Days to come?

The most precious gift we can give our mothers is love and time. Work and life often distract us from the important things, one of them is our relationship with our mothers. They are always there and often taken for granted – until they are not there.

This year it is more important to me than ever to spend time with my mum. Time to really talk with her, to thank her for the time, the effort, and the boundless love she put in, particularly in times when I wasn’t particularly grateful, kind, or lovable. I know that if I asked her what she would wish for on Mother’s Day, she would ask for more time to spend with her family, her daughters and grandchildren.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate all mothers, those here with us, and those we hold in our memories. Mums raising children, stepchildren, grandchildren, foster children, adopted children, mums who lost children, those who long to be mothers and struggle with infertility. This day can be complicated, painful, and bittersweet, but may it also be filled with joy and love that never fades.

Can Simple Stretching Improve Your Cardiovascular Health?

Facilitated stretching is a part of every session of MET at our clinic and we provide stretches for patients to do at home.

Stretching may reduce cardiovascular risk. A 2017 study by Shinno et al., asked healthy women over 40yo to stretch 3 times per week, for 3 or 6 months. They conducted 20-30 second static stretches of 15 muscle groups: ‘trapezius, arm-flexors, deltoids, triceps, upper-back muscles (trapezius/rhomboids), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, soleus, hip abductors, hip adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, and lower erector spinae. Stretching intensity was participant-rated as “somewhat-heavy” to “heavy”.

To see whether the stretching routine had any long-term effects on blood vessels flexibility (compliance), researchers measured an index called RH-PAT both before and after 3 or 6 months of stretching. RH-PAT is determined by:

1. measuring normal arterial blood flow in the forearm, then

2. inflating an upper-arm cuff to stop blood flow for 5 minutes, then

3. releasing the cuff and measuring blood flow 1 min after cuff release.

4. Calculating the ratio of arm blood flow before cuffing and 1 min after cuff-release

5. This gives a ratio called the “reactive hyperaemia peripheral artery tonometry (RH-PAT) index”

RH-PAT is a “powerful predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality”.

It can predict:

1. endothelial (blood vessel lining cell) dysfunction

2. coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis

3. microvascular dysfunction following sepsis

4. coronary plaque formation

The arteries of healthy people are flexible/dilatable and have a higher HR-PAT index; people with cardiovascular diseases have a low HR-PAT index because their arteries have difficulty dilating.

So how did regular stretching effect participants artery’s ability to dilate (health)?

a. all study participants had an RH-PAT index below 1.67 at study’s beginning

b. both 3 and 6 months of stretching improved RH-PAT index significantly

c. a further 6-months of no-stretching saw RH-PAT index return to pre-intervention values

These results suggest regular stretching can increase the compliance (flexibility) of arteries, reducing cardiovascular risk, and that regular stretching may lead to health benefits beyond increased muscle-flexibility for maintaining a healthy back. Importantly, once women stopped stretching accrued cardiovascular benefits were slowly lost over the following 6 months.

So, the old imperative idiom of ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies to the cardiovascular benefits of stretching too.

Warragamba Ready to Take the Court

Warragamba Netball Club are once again ready to take to the court, with the 2025 PDNA Competition beginning this month.

The new season begins on Saturday 3rd May, which will be kicked off with the popular tradition of the March Past, presenting all the teams for the year. 2025 will see 118 junior players across 14 teams and 114 senior players across 12 teams, including 2 mixed teams, represent Warragamba. The end of the regular season is Saturday 30th August, with Grand Finals being played on Saturday 20th September.

There are still vacancies for players in the Under 14’s teams. The club also welcomes any potential sponsors who are looking to support them.

“As a club, we rely heavily on sponsorship to support all our players. We would welcome any contributions, especially from our local community. We have a variety of sponsorship packages available” said Angela Williams, President of Warragamba Netball Club.

Angela and her fellow Committee members are very much looking forward to the new season ahead.

“We’re looking forward to another huge season for the club. Off the back of our most successful year yet in 2024, we’re excited to build on that momentum and continue growing both on and off the court. But more than anything, we hope every player— whether they’re new to the game or a seasoned club member—has a fun, rewarding, and memorable season. That’s what it’s all about” she explained to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

The club would like to extend a big thank you to the Marz Family, Ste-Way, and Ultra Line Marking for their generous sponsorship of their game balls. Thanks to their support, their teams are fully equipped and ready to hit the court for the start of the season.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Resolving Conflict

Have you ever been in conflict with someone? Of course you have!

Conflict is an inevitable part of life. Whether it’s a disagreement with a friend, a tense moment in a workplace, or misunderstanding in a family, we all face moments of tension. Instead of seeing conflict as only ever a bad thing, I believe most conflict is an opportunity to grow. However, if conflict escalates into some kind of abuse or violence, then a person’s safety is of primary concern.

Recently I have been working on a Conflict Resolution Policy for our church that helps people respond to conflict in a way that reflects the love and grace of Jesus. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:31-32: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger … be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” The good news of Jesus gives us the model of how to respond to conflict - with humility, gentleness, and forgiveness.

We believe conflict should be handled calmly, starting with calm one-on-one conversations where the goal isn’t just to say your bit, but to listen and understand. If needed, a neutral third party can help create space for healing and clarity.

Instead of avoiding one another or lashing out, God wants us to engage with each other in healthy ways - seeking understanding and reconciliation. My hope is that even through conflict, people would not only find resolution, but grow in maturity, strengthen relationships, and experience something of the transforming power of the gospel.

A Thoughtful Mother’s Day: Choosing Pet-Safe Bouquets

With Mother’s Day around the corner, many of us will be picking out beautiful flower arrangements to celebrate the special women in our lives. However, while flowers bring joy, some can pose serious risks to our furry family members. Many plants and flowers can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by pets, but others are far more dangerous— potentially leading to severe illness or even death, even in small amounts. Before selecting a bouquet, it’s important to be aware of toxic flowers that could harm your pets.

Flowers to Avoid:

Lilies – Highly toxic to cats and dangerous to some dogs, lilies (including Peace, Calla, Easter, and Tiger Lilies) can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, kidney failure, and, in severe cases, multiple organ failure. Even a small amount—such as pollen or water from a vase—can be deadly for cats.

Daffodils – These cheerful spring flowers can cause serious heart irregularities, difficulty breathing, and trouble swallowing if ingested. The bulbs are especially toxic, and even skin contact can lead to rashes, itching, and inflammation.

Carnations – While less toxic than some other flowers, carnations can cause stomach upset if eaten and skin irritation upon contact.

Chrysanthemums – Common in floral arrangements, chrysanthemums contain toxic compounds that can cause nausea, vomiting, drooling, rashes, diarrhoea, and loss of coordination.

Tulips – Every part of a tulip is toxic, but the bulb is the most dangerous. Ingesting tulips can lead to drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, heart issues, and difficulty breathing.

Ivy – Popular varieties like English Ivy and Devil’s Ivy (Golden Pothos) can cause severe mouth and stomach irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, and swelling of the lips, tongue, and mouth.

If your pet chews, licks, or ingests any of these toxic plants, seek veterinary care immediately. Contact Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital at (02) 4736 2720 for advice and assistance.

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate with love and care—by choosing pet-safe flowers that bring joy to both our mums and our pets!

The first tracks have been laid at Luddenham for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line as the 23 kilometre new metro railway connecting the new Western Sydney International Airport, takes shape. The first portion of track was installed at Luddenham, just north of a new rail bridge that will take metro services over the future M12 motorway. Track laying is currently progressing north towards St Marys with a team of up to 60 workers, who build anywhere from 70 to 100 metres of track per day. More than 6,400 tonnes of Australian made rail steel will be laid along the 23 kilometre line between St Marys and Bradfield from now until mid-2026. Each 20 metre piece of rail steel is manufactured in South Australia, then it is shipped to Newcastle, before being trucked to a newly constructed rail laydown yard in Luddenham South.

“Haulin’ the Hume” a vintage truck and bus run that goes from Sydney to Yass along The Old Hume Highway (Highway 31), raising awareness and much needed funds for ASPECT - Autism Spectrum Australia. Driving old trucks and acknowledging the transport heritage, this year they started from the Luddenham Showground on 12 April, transporting us back in time, as 315 vintage trucks, all over 30 years old, made their way from and through Luddenham to the historic Old Hume Highway, before heading to the Gundagai Showground for the night.

With the Federal Election this Saturday 3 May, the boundaries have changed and more of Luddenham is now in Hume. The boundary now follows Warragamba and Nepean Rivers to the Water Supply Pipeline, then follows Littlefield’s Road to The Northern Road, then continues along The Northern Rd to Elizabeth Drive and then down Elizabeth Drive to South Creek. Luddenham is in two different Federal Electorates- Hume and Lindsay. This year will see the Luddenham Progress Hall Polling Booth for those that live in Hume. If you live in Lindsay, you will have to vote at the Mulgoa Hall in Littlefield’s Road or at Bennett Road Public School in Bennett Road, Colyton.

A big shout out to A Current Affair who are now bringing pressure on the State Government to approve the NSW Planning proposal for new housing to Luddenham Village north of all noise contours. I have been talking with reporter Lizzy Bryan from Nine News for a few years now, glad to see our story being told.

Luddenham Show Society have confirmed that next year’s show, the 120th, will be held on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March 2026.

This year’s Luddenham Easter Festival was a tremendous success and will also be back next year 3 - 6 April.

Great to see Liverpool Council fixing up the damaged footpaths around town.
