Western Sydney Airport Preliminary Flight Paths Released

The preliminary flight paths for Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) have been made public. For additional transparency, the preliminary flight paths, along with estimated aircraft noise impacts, are now available to communities through an online interactive Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool.

This tool will let people search an address or location and get a clear picture of impact of the preliminary flight paths including the expected altitude at that location, daily aircraft numbers and the predicted aircraft noise.

Supporting material has also been released to explain the approaches to the preliminary flight paths design and noise modelling.

They will hold community information and feedback sessions as well as community information stalls across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains over the coming months. Communities will be able to find out more information and speak with the flight path design team at these events.

These preliminary flight paths have been developed by an Expert Steering Group led by The Hon Catherine King MP Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government’s department and including AirServices Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Department of Defence, and airport operator WSA Co.

Importantly, the preliminary flight paths were developed according to Airspace Design Principles that reflect community feedback from the ‘proof-of-concept’ flight paths released in 2015. These principles include minimising flights over residential areas and reducing the impact on the community of aircraft operations at night.

Later this year, they will release a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that examines the noise, social and environmental impacts of the preliminary flight paths and includes a draft noise insulation and property acquisition policy.

The Albanese Government is committed to balancing the needs of the community, environment, industry, and users of the broader Greater Sydney airspace, while maintaining safety as a priority, in the design of WSI’s flight paths.

That is why the community will be able to provide feedback on the draft EIS during a formal public exhibition period following its release. This feedback will be considered as they finalise the flight path design ahead of the new airport starting operations by late 2026.

They encourage people to visit their Online Community Portal at wsiflightpaths.gov.au to use the Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool, read the supporting material, and get details of the community information and feedback sessions.

It was a dream that was 25 years in the making, as Glenmore Park’s Ronnie Riskalla held the World Premiere of his film, Streets of Colour, at Cremorne in Sydney recently.

Taking place on Monday June 26th at the majestic 95 year old Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, almost 600 people attended, making it one of the most successful independent film premieres in Australian film history.

Streets of Colour was filmed in Western Sydney and tells the story of Tez, a 23-yearold soon to be father who is blamed for the death of his best friend Akachi in a racist street fight.

The night began at 6:00pm, with paparazzi of about 7 photographers and videographers taking photos of the cast and some special guests. There was a black carpet host too, who interviewed the cast and crew.

People were soon ushered into the beautiful art-deco historic Orpheum Theatre, once guests were settled. A brief introduction was given to the audience, and then the film began at 8:00pm.

With the film running for 102 minutes, over 500 people stayed for the much anticipated Q & A.

Hosted by Yolandi Franken (Producer), Ronnie Riskalla (Director) was interviewed, along with lead actors Rahel Romahn who plays Tez and Veronica Cloherty as Madison.

“It was extremely overwhelming for someone who has anxiety in large crowds. I really had to calm my nerves” explained Ronnie Riskalla to the Glenmore Gazette.

“I was both excited and nervous, but it was great to see so many old industry friends and new ones too. I was humbled to see that many people came out to see my independent film that was shot in Western Sydney. The film was received well, struck a nerve and was emotional for many.

“It was one the biggest moments of my professional life and I feel very blessed to have had my premiere at the Orpheum, as it was a dream 25 years in the making. I set my eyes on that theatre around 1997, and I made it a goal to have a film play there. It was a full circle moment” he continued.

Streets of Colour has a limited cinema release as special event screenings throughout Australia. There are plans for most of Western Sydney to get screenings, including Penrith, Mount Druitt, Blacktown, and Wetherill Park.

“I’d like to thank God, and my wife Renee, who have made all this possible. My producer Yolandi Franken (Frankendipity Entertprises), the crew from my production company Drew Pearson and Nenif David (SkyCross Entertainment), Chief Executive Producer of Streets of Colour - Dr. Raj Patankar (Rishi Raj Films) and the entire 300 cast and crew of Streets of Colour. Thank you so very much” Ronnie ended.

How to Take a Rest

It might seem like a silly thing to consider, and we might think: “Obviously, just stop working.” Australia has one of the highest average working hours per week in the world. To rest we must have times of no work when we can refuel physically.

That may rest the outward or physical part of us, but how can we rest the inward part of us?

If we are physically resting, but our mind is spinning with thoughts like an overactive hard drive, we are not resting. The same is true if we are lounging in front of a movie while we are worrying about this and that.

The reality is that the different parts of us – our physical body, mind, and soul are all connected. Whatever happens in one can influence the other parts. For example, if we are physically unwell this can make us feel down emotionally. In the same way, lingering anxiety can drain us physically and we might say, “I feel like I have run a marathon”.

Again, both outward physical and inward rest are important. Physical rest requires things well within our capacity – planning holidays, getting our partner or spouse to take the kids for the afternoon, or even making lifestyle choices that help limit how much we need to work to pay for it all.

Inward rest is not so straightforward because what happens deep within us is not clearly understood. Why a certain encounter made us angry or why certain feelings linger can’t always be easily explained. The inward parts of us mysteriously deal with deep desire, love, fears, beliefs, and the wounds and wisdom of our experiences – a complex mix of things shaping our view of life, the world, our now and our future.

In the Bible Jesus is recorded as saying, “If you are tired come to me. Learn how I live life and you will find rest for your souls. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

It is all too easy to see the negatives in life and dwell on them. Let me share a story of something that happened to me. I thought I had returned to the wrong car at the shops. The car had a ding just behind the driver’s door. I thought, ‘this isn’t my car, I don’t have a ding there.’ Sure enough, while I had been shopping, someone had opened their car door into my car. It was easy to feel wronged, annoyed, and lose a bit of faith in the goodwill of the average Australian. Despite all these things being true, there was lots to be thankful for that day. I had just come back from Coles and had a trolley of food for the family. I had a roof over my head, and I know that I am loved by those around me.

The ding in the car was only a tiny thing, but what about something bigger? Even during the deepest grief, or the strongest pain, there are still things for which we can be thankful. Difficulty doesn’t eliminate thankfulness.

The Apostle Paul, who knew what hardship was like, wrote this: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). No matter what challenges he faced, he always knew God’s love towards him and so the glass always felt full.

Investing in Apprentices: Bert Evans Scholarship Opportunity

Member for Badgerys Creek, Tanya Davies has announced that applications are now open for the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships and encourages all hard-working apprentices to apply.

The scholarships support apprentices who are experiencing financial or personal hardship, demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and are committed to completing on and off the job training.

Tanya Davies said that a total of 751 scholarships have been awarded to outstanding apprentices in NSW since 2014.

“An apprenticeship is a great way to kick-start a career, and apprentices are vital to our State’s growth, but we also understand it’s not always easy to complete a qualification,” Mrs Davies said.

Shadow Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Justin Clancy said apprentices were vital to driving NSW forward.

“We want to back our apprentices by giving them a helping hand to complete their training and gain a qualification so they can make a strong contribution in their jobs and in the lives of their families and communities,” Mr Clancy said.

“Across the state, many industries are experiencing vacancies, so this scholarship could not have come at a better time.”

The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO, a passionate advocate of vocational education for more than 30 years.

Local Educator Recognised in NSW Training Awards

Leading early childhood education and care provider Affinity Education Group is celebrating a number of its educators who were nominated in the NSW State Training Awards this year.

The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW and recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector. The Awards are designed to honour and reward the achievements of students, trainers/ teachers, Registered Training Organisations, and large and medium size employers.

Local educator Debadatta Paul, Room Leader at Kids Academy Glenmore Park, is passionate about helping children to realise their potential, and was nominated after completing a traineeship through the Affinity Learning Academy (ALA).

Affinity Education Group is committed to training and upskilling its employees through a range of initiatives, including the ALA. The fully funded training program gives employees access to internal professional development programs, as well as the opportunity to complete nationally recognised qualifications in early childhood education and business via Registered Training Organisations.

Having lived overseas working with underprivileged children, Debadatta knew that exploring a career in early childhood education and care would be the perfect fit for her.

“I always enjoyed my time working with children when I was living overseas, so I soon realised that I wanted to pursue a career working in the early childhood education sector.”

The ALA gave Debadatta the opportunity to study for free, while also accessing a range of other benefits, including paid study time at work, supportive and knowledgeable trainers, and ongoing practical training even after completing her studies.

Debadatta credits her growth to ALA trainer, Stephanie Ericson, who supported her throughout her year-long traineeship.

“I felt so supported throughout my entire course. Stephanie communicated with me regularly and when I had moments of low self-confidence, she encouraged me with her positive energy and guidance.”

While Debadatta has now completed her traineeship, she is enjoying mentoring other educators who are completing their own studies through the Affinity Learning Academy.

“I now have the skills to lead a team, as well as plan and implement programs in line with approved learning frameworks and regulatory requirements.”

Debadatta says that her traineeship allowed her to grow more confident in her role as Room Leader at Kids Academy Glenmore Park and encourages other trainees to consider a traineeship with Affinity Education.

Warragamba African Lion Safari 55 Years On

This month marks the 55-year anniversary since the official opening of the African Lion Safari, located in Warragamba. Visitors of the park would drive on a 4-kilometre road, where lions roamed freely. It was common for the lions to approach cars driving on the safari, biting bits off motor vehicles, and climbing onto bonnets. Park workers would frequently have to retrieve parts from cars, such as bumpers and side mirrors.

With a scenic railway and a dolphinarium, the safari park would attract up to 200,000 visitors each year. The 100-acre reserve featured many other exotic animals, including tigers, bears, sea lions, and water buffalo. Activities that were held daily at the park included a parrot circus, a dolphin and sea lion show, kangaroo feeding, and visits to Pets Corner, home to a range of non-native animals. A local community service was also established by the park where unwanted or sick livestock could be disposed of and used as food for the lions and tigers.

The park was opened on a block of land near Warragamba Dam on August 17th, 1968, by Stafford Bullen. An additional park was opened by Stafford called Bullen’s Animal World, located in Wallacia. Here visitors watched a circus and drove through an animal petting zoo. The Bullen family was a renowned circus family in Australia who were responsible for bringing the Great Moscow Circus to the country.

With extensive work required to upgrade the Lion Safari Park following legislative changes, the facility closed in 1991. Despite the parks closure, the Bullen family continued to hold the animals on site and bred the lions and tigers.

On August 7, 1995, three lions escaped from the park gates and roamed the nearby streets and backyards of Silverdale. One of the lions was shot dead by a park handler after smashing down a fence and mauling a family dog in Marsh Road. Following this unfortunate attack, the park was required to upgrade its facilities to prevent any more animals from escaping.

Today, the land where the African Lion Safari Park once sat has been demolished and is being built on for residential development. For many, it is sad seeing such a thrilling place in ruin, however it will remain a wonderful memory for those who grew up with it as their playground.

Regentville RFS Welcomes New Firefighting Recruits

at Regentville to around 40 operation crew members. “The brigade is also thrilled to have so many female members on the intake as well, as Regentville Brigade have such an amazingly large female membership already compared to other areas,” said Jordan Jobson of Regentville Rural Fire Brigade.

“The brigade agrees, these members will play a pivotal role in what is shaping up to be a potentially dangerous fire season with the recent announcements of a potential El Nino weather cycle due to lash our great country again,” Jobson added. With the past flooding and current cool temperatures, residents must not become complacent. Grasslands are still quite dry and will only continue to dry out coming into summer.

With a potentially threatening fire season ahead, the Regentville Rural Fire Brigade has recruited 11 new members to their team.

Whilst brigade activities slow down following the end of the recent flood events across NSW, the new firefighters have had the opportunity to go full steam ahead on their training and maintenance.

Firefighters Julian, Alicia, Amy, Mikayla, Kaitlyn, Josh, Anne, Ben, James, Matt, and Tara are well underway learning new skills, such as pumping from fire trucks and portable firefighting pumps, the use of hand tools, radio communications, and emergency procedures in the event a truck is overcome by fire.

“It’s been a lifelong dream to be a firefighter and help the community,” said recruit Matt. Already eager to jump on a truck and assist with incidents in the local area, Matt is looking forward to helping out other crews in the area.

Having joined around the same time, the recruits completed their online applications via the NSW Rural Fire Service website, sat an interview with the membership team, and are now going through the Bush Firefighter course together.

“I have a lot of friends and family already in the RFS around the state and was keen to have a go myself. I am looking forward to gaining the experience of being a firefighter, as well as making new friends in the brigade and local community,” explained recruit Mikayla.

Once qualified, this will boost the number of firefighters

As the weather slowly gets warmer, it is important that the community is educated on fire and household safety. Regentville Rural Fire Brigade is hosting their annual Open Day on September 16th , where families can learn more about how to best protect themselves and their families in the most exciting way.

This year’s annual Open Day will be bigger than ever. Locals can expect lots of activities such as colouring in competitions, emergency vehicles on display, everyone’s favourite local BBQ, and maybe even a helicopter again!

If you have concerns with what summer may hold or want more details about upcoming events, be sure to follow and share the NSW RFS – Regentville Brigade Facebook Page.

Glenmore Park High School Girls Create History

The Glenmore Park High School Open Girls Basketball Team have created history by becoming the first team from the school to qualify for a National Tournament in the sport.

The 10 female students, who are coached by John Faiumu, finished second in the New South Wales Combined High Schools (NSWCHS) Knockout Competition to Westfield Sports High School. They now qualify for the Nationals, to be held from 26th November to 1st December on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The girls advanced undefeated through the first 3 rounds to qualify for the Sydney West Region Top 8 Gala Day. Here they were also undefeated, winning their 3 pool games as well as the Semi and Grand Final, to advance to the NSW Statewide Round of 16. The Open Girls lost this round, which meant they were knocked out of the competition.

Fortunately for the girls, they were granted a wildcard entry. This was due to 2 other schools not being able to attend the NSW Statewide Final 8 Gala Day.

At the Statewide Gala Day, they started well, winning their first 2 pool games, before losing to Westfield Sports High School in their third and final pool game. They finished second and were set to play Hunter Sports High School, who finished first in their pool.

They played a tough game, coming back from a 14 point deficit in the first quarter, to win by 4 points. The team would then lose to Westfield Sports High School again in the Final.

“I was just happy for the girls. The majority of the Year 12 girls have been a part of the basketball team since Year 7 and it was awesome to see them be rewarded for their efforts” said John Faiumu, coach of the Glenmore Park High School Open Girls Basketball Team.

John believes the team’s self-belief is the key to their success.

“I would like to say it’s my coaching, but I’d be lying. I think for the girls, it’s the belief in their own abilities and working together. Last year we finished 5th overall in the State and I think for most of the girls, they were still holding on to that result wanting to do better” he explained.

He is looking forward to the Nationals in Queensland later this year.

“The competitive nature of the tournament is what I’m looking forward to. To see the team, prove to themselves that they can match it with the best schools in Australia” John smiled.

The team’s fundraising page to get them to the Nationals can be found at www.trybooking.com/ au/donate/gphsopengirlsbball.

Kids and Pets: Tips for Building a Safe and Respectful Relationship

Around 63% of Australian households host a furry member of the family. Children reap many benefits from having pets; the research suggests that that beyond companionship, caring for animals may support the development of a child’s non-verbal communication skills and empathy.

Looking after pets can be a positive learning experience for kids, but the care of an animal should not be left to a child alone. Parents must play an active and thoughtful role in teaching children how to care for animals responsibly and safely.

Pets should never be bought or adopted on a whim (even if your child begs and begs). A cat or dog is a long-term commitment for the whole family. When calculating the forecasted costs of your new furry companion, do not underestimate veterinary costs over a pet’s lifetime.

Always supervise your child with the family pet. Be in eye and ear shot of toddlers and babies around animals and stay close in case you need to intervene. Keep animals securely contained and away from infants when you are not in the room and establish separate spaces in the house for pets and young children.

Help your child recognise your pet’s cues of stress or fear. Together, you and child need to look out for both the obvious signs of distress (e.g. cats hissing, dogs growling) as well as the more subtle signs (e.g. a cat swishing its tail). Children should be encouraged to give animals space when appropriate, including at sleeping and eating times.

It is essential that you model respect for animals so that your child can learn by example. Children learn more from observing us than listening to what we say. Show your child how to speak calmly and quietly with animals and handle them with gentleness. Praise your child when they do the right thing, for example “great job giving soft pats”.

NCNS in partnership with RSPCA hosts regular Pet Days at Cranebrook Neighbourhood Centre to offer subsidised desexing and micro-chipping. Check out our Facebook page to learn more: https://www.facebook.com/NepeanCommunity. Follow these tips and you can create a healthy and happy home for both kids and pets.

Book Review your

novel is a highly recommended addition to any bookshelf. She weaves a tale of magic, nature, and music based on Scandinavian fairy tales and legends.

The story revolves around Esther and her infinite love for her sister, Aura, who has disappeared. The family has fractured since the disappearance and they are all struggling with the loss. Esther sets out to discover the mystery of Aura’s last few months. A journey that takes her, reluctantly, from home in Tasmania to Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

While reconnecting with her family roots, Esther discovers myths, legends and symbols that begin a transformation in her as she finds the courage to allow herself to be immersed in grief, joy, and love. The local stories and legends are fascinating, and then she adds another dimension with the 'back to the 80's' themes, introducing fun cultural references from those years.

Initially I couldn’t relate to Esther, I found her tiresome and slightly irritating. It took a while for me to get into the book. But the writing is so delightful and almost musical, it is impossible to not become enthralled. In retrospect, I realise that this was about her journey and she didn’t really like the person she was either. Esther at the end is a different person. She had unresolved issues to face and Holly Ringland actually writes so beautifully about the pain of grief and loss and family conflict. Ringland’s prose is magical and written with gentleness.

I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to Scandinavia through Esther’s eyes, and the ending was satisfying.

Australian Lions Foundation Donates an Additional $100,000 to Tadros Family

Ten-year-old Nicholas Tadros’ heartbreaking story has captivated the nation, after he suffered extensive injuries in the Gold Coast helicopter crash which tragically killed his mother Vanessa and three others.

Nicky broke almost every bone in his body and had to have his leg amputated.

To support Nicholas and his dad through this difficult time, the Australian Lions Foundation has announced a generous donation of $100,000 at a special BBQ held at Nicholas and his father Simon’s home recently.

The $100,000 donation is in addition to the over $100,000 already raised for the ALF’s national fundraising appeal.

ALF has been working closely with Nicholas’ local Lions Club, Lions Club of Parramatta Inc in recent months to use the funds raised in the appeal to support Nicholas and Simon.

Nicholas still faces a long road with his recovery, but his prospects look brighter with the support from the Australian Lions Foundation, Parramatta Lions and the generous community and corporate donations.

Donations to the Australian Lions Foundation Appeal can be made online and 100% of the funds raised will be used to support Nicholas and his father Simon.

Simon and Nicholas both expressed their gratitude at the generosity and outpouring of support from the community to date.

“Nicky’s story captured the hearts of many and when we saw his father confirm to A Current Affair that Nicholas’ right leg needed to be amputated due to infection, we knew we needed to do something. That’s when Australian Lions Foundation launched our National Appeal. It has been so wonderful to see the community get behind this brave little boy and his devoted Dad.

“In recent months Australian Lions Foundation has been working closely with Nicholas’ local Lions Club, Parramatta Lions Club to use the funds raised in the appeal to support Nicholas and his father. We are very pleased to be donating an additional $100,000 to help support Nicholas on his recovery.”

“It’s been a difficult few months for Nicky and Simon. Simon can no longer work as a truck driver and won’t for the foreseeable future as he needs to be by his son’s side for the road to recovery.

“Both are so grateful for the support they have received from the community.

“We know many people are looking for a way to support Nicholas and his father through this difficult time and we are pleased to be able to help facilitate this.

“We welcome the generous donations from corporate Australia and encourage any and all donations to continue support for the Tadros family” said Tony Benbow OAM, Australian Lions Foundation Chairperson.

To make a donation, visit https://www.givenow.com.au/australianlionsfoundation.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Corporate donations to be made via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to the Foundation’s Compassionate Grant Fund’s Westpac bank account (BSB: 036-157, Account#: 535251) with an email to be sent to alf.tadros@lions.org.au confirming their donation.

Shaheen Aumeer-Donovan (Practice Manager) & Philip Aumeer-Donovan (Clinical Manager and Podiatrist)

Biomechanical Assessments (Part 1)

A biomechanical assessment is a series of investigations conducted by a podiatrist to ascertain how the structure and function of a patient’s feet, lower legs, and lifestyle factors contribute to issues they are having. Why do a Biomechanical Assessment? Pain

An assessment will help identify the source and cause of pain, as well as any structural and/or functioning issues that should be addressed to treat the pain.

Child’s Growth

If there are concerns about the development or co-ordination of a child, an assessment can identify issues that need to be addressed or put your mind at ease.

Genetic Conditions / Neurological Disorders / Brain Injuries

Hereditary ailments (HAV or bunions, EDS, etc.), neurological disorders (CMT, MS, CP, Parkinson’s, muscular dystrophies, etc.), and brain injuries (traumatic brain injury, stroke, etc.) can affect the feet, balance, and/or coordination. Developing a good relationship with a podiatrist skilled in the biomechanics of complex cases is essential to track the progress of the disease’s effect on the feet and provide the correct support at the right time.

With a family history of genetic conditions, at-risk patients could also benefit from assessment, even without symptoms, as it may be possible to slow the progress of the disease with early monitoring and intervention.

Acute Trauma

Once an acute injury has healed, any residual pain can be investigated with an assessment. If the foot has been immobilised for some time (such as in a moon boot), structures involved in or around the injury may have weakened and require more support or rehabilitation. Sometimes compensating for the injury can cause secondary trauma that needs a different intervention to allow complete healing.

Chronic / Repeat Injuries

Poor or unsupported foot mechanics can be the cause of an injury that just won’t heal or keeps recurring.

Shoes Wearing Quickly

If shoes are wearing out particularly fast, especially if one side wears quicker than the other, the foot mechanics are likely contributing to that. An assessment will determine if the foot needs to be supported more to reduce the pressure on the shoes, or whether a change of shoes to a style better suited to the foot will help.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Pietro italian ristorante 41 Fourteenth st, Warragamba

I love Italian food, so I was pretty excited to try Pietro Italian Ristorante with Luke. Only a short 20-minute drive from Penrith, this hidden gem is located in the beautiful township of Warragamba. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation, but the staff were instantly accommodating and happy to seat us ahead of our booking time. We were served complimentary meatballs in Napoli sauce as we were seated, and they tasted divine.

The menu had a great selection of food ranging from pizza, pasta, risotto, salads, and chef’s suggestions. We decided to order an entrée of arancini, followed by pizza and gnocchi for mains.

The crisp arancini balls were served quickly. Each plate had one large, crumbed rice ball filled with bolognaise and mozzarella cheese. Served with a delicious addition of Napoli sauce and parsley, the arancini had an amazing crunch and was served at a perfect temperature. Overall, it was a great start to our meal.

Soon after, our pizza was served. We ordered the Vinni traditional pizza, which was topped with ham, cabanossi, mushroom, capsicum, pineapple, onions, and olives. The base was perfectly crunchy and cooked to perfection. All of the toppings balanced each other out perfectly and the cheese was not too overpowering.

The gnocchi came out soon after and was served with parmesan and chilli on the side. It smelt amazing and our stomachs were rumbling just looking at the dish. The gnocchi were cooked al dente, with a light, squidgy texture. It was complimented beautifully by the smooth and creamy mixed red and white sauce.

While we were eating, the owner of the restaurant, Anthony, made sure to say hi and ensure we were enjoying our food. I watched and he continued to interact with almost every table in the restaurant which was very nice to see.

Overall, our experience at Pietro Italian Ristorante was exceptional. Not only was the food amazing but every single staff member was friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere was great. With ample serving sizes it is well worth the price. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

HEALTH MATTERS

Effect of Multi-Strain Probiotics on Remission of Ulcerative Colitis

As we saw last month:

1. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is considered incurable.

2. Medical approaches involve pharmacotherapy - antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and/or immunosuppressive drugs; surgical intervention (sometimes extensive).

3. These are supportive, not curative; may have side effects requiring discontinuation.

4. 20-30% of patients don’t respond/are forced off medication, leading to colectomy.

5. Human UC patients have alterations in gut microbial composition.

6. Inappropriate gut flora may be a contributor to UC disease. We’ve previously examined various microbial UC treatments:

1. Single strain probiotics (Mutaflor),

2. Transplantation of donor stool alone (FMT)

3. FMT plus diet modifications

Open-labelled and randomised double-blind placebocontrolled trials (RCT) have also been conducted using a probiotic containing 8-bacteria, namely:

• Streptococcus thermophilus

• Bifidobacterium breve

• Bifidobacterium longum

• Bifidobacterium infantis

• Lactobacillus paracasei

• Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus

• Lactobacillus acidophilus

• Lactobacillus plantarum

Bibiloni et al (2005), studied 34 adult active-UC patients (while on steroids or mesalazine) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning

and night for 6 weeks. 53% of these UC patients achieved remission, 24% a significant clinical response, 9% no response, 9% a worsening of symptoms. In total, 77% of patients’ symptoms improved on multi-strain probiotics.

Lee et al, (2012) studied 24 adult patients with active UC (concomitant medications not specified) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning and night for 8 weeks. 46% of UC patients achieved remission, 21% significant clinical response, 25% had either no response or some symptom-worsening. In total, 67% of patients improved on multi-strain probiotics.

Sood et al (2009) conducted an RCT involving 147 adults with active UC (not on steroids; but with oral mesalazine, azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine allowed) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning and night, or placebo for 12 weeks:

After 6 weeks:

i. 33% of the probiotic’s patients, only

ii. 10% of placebo patients halved their symptom scores.

After 12 weeks:

i. 42.9% of probiotics patients achieved remission, only 15.7% on placebo.

ii. 52% of probiotics patients achieved significant symptom scores decreases, only 19% on placebo.

iii. Symptom decrease-magnitudes were significantly greater for those on probiotics.

These studies clearly show that multi-strain probiotics are a generally safe and effective adjunctive treatment for achieving clinical response and remission in UC.

Welcome to the Family Dr Maria

It is with great excitement that we announce an addition to the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital family.

Last month we welcomed a new Veterinarian to the team, Dr Maria Scheible. With the addition of Dr Maria, Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital now has six Veterinarians able to provide high quality care for your fur babies.

Growing up, Maria always knew she wanted to work with animals, and the dream of becoming a veterinarian was sparked when she found an interest in high school biology. She spent several years of her childhood in Japan, where her family adopted their first pet, a Miniature Schnauzer named Muffin, before moving back to Sydney in 2009.

She has volunteered at organisations such as the Animal Welfare League and WIRES, and has also spent some time pet-sitting and working as a veterinary nurse before becoming qualified. In 2022, she graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation, she decided to take several months off to pursue her interests and travel back to Japan to spend time with friends and relatives, before returning to Sydney and joining the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital as a new graduate Veterinarian.

Currently, her passion lies with small animals and ensuring her furry patients receive a high level of care that will ultimately enhance their quality of life. In her spare time, Maria enjoys baking, travelling, being outdoors, exploring new places to eat, and spending time with her two Miniature Schnauzers, Cooper and Moose.
