Even when I was little, I loved sleeping late and awakening naturally to a whole day filled with absolutely nothing but whatever I wanted to do — like lying under a tree on my stomach watching the ants in the grass or lying under a tree on my back watching the clouds in the sky. With summer an endless stretch of just such days, summer was my season — right up until August 1st, when ads for back-to-school supplies and clothes and haircuts evoked the dark specter of early mornings and stuffy classrooms. Oh sure…there were new school shoes, all scuff-free and shiny…the annual box of No. 2 pencils embossed with my full name in glorious gold…and a cool lunchbox destined to smell like peanut butter and apples — but they were cold comfort for someone enchanted by ants. The good news? You can still watch clouds through a schoolroom window — and October 1st really isn’t too early to begin thinking about summer. JUDY
