THE NEW QUEEN ST SURGERY

Wastage of Medicine Every year in the UK, unused or wasted medicines cost the NHS three hundred million pounds. To put that into perspective, that’s enough for 80,906 more hip replacements, 11,778 more community nurses, or 19,779 more breast cancer treatments. It is also really common for people to ‘stock pile’ medications. This can pose real safety risks, especially if there are children around and they are not stored properly. However, it’s not all bad news… there are things that YOU can do to help. Please let your GP or pharmacist know if you’ve stopped taking any of your medicines. This will then ensure that these can be removed from your repeat prescriptions. They can always be added again if you need them in the future. Think carefully before ticking all the boxes on your repeat prescription forms, and only tick those you really need.

Please also remember that your medicines are prescribed only for you; it’s not safe to share them with anyone else. Your GP or nurse may have good reason for giving you a certain tablet, and a good reason not to give it to your relatives! If you have unused medication, please return them to the pharmacist or dispenser. Although they can’t be recycled, they do need to be disposed of safely. Please don’t flush them down the toilet. Please keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Check what medicines you still have at home before re-ordering. If you don’t need the medicine, please don’t order it! If you need the medicine in the future you can still request it. Discuss your medication with your GP or pharmacist on a regular basis. This also ensures that you are taking the correct medicine at the correct dose for your needs. Your GP, or a member of the team such as the diabetic or asthma nurse, would always be happy to discuss your medications on the phone or face to face, and your local pharmacist is always a good source of advice. If you need to go into hospital, please remember to take all your medicines with you in a clearly marked bag. This helps the hospital doctors to know what medicines you take regularly, and helps them to prescribe any additional medication safely.

Welcome to the August edition of Discovering Whittlesea... We’ve got a busy issue for you this month, with a range of articles from both existing and new contributors. We have updates from the local schools as they prepare to wind down for the holiday, including exciting news about the creation of a new Multi-Academy Trust for the town – no doubt there’ll be more news to come on this over the coming months. Don’t miss the photos from Sir Harry Smith’s recent art exhibition, where the talent on show was outstanding, and updates from local clubs. There’s also a fascinating article on Whittlesey’s local music scene (we look forward to bringing you part two next month), and another interesting History feature from Whittlesey Museum. Enjoy the month ahead.

Jack

What a busy month! Thanks as usual to our magazine team and regular contributors, who have been hard at work putting together a packed issue for August, full of local news, information and entertainment. The sun is shining as I write this, and as the children break up from school for the summer, we’re all looking forward to the break ahead (though some parents will undoubtedly disagree!). There’s always plenty to see and do in August, so be sure to check our events diary for ideas on how to keep yourselves occupied over the coming month.

Oral Health for Life A few decades ago, it was an assumption that, as we aged, we would lose our natural teeth. Thankfully, that’s not the case for today’s generation. A healthy mouth and teeth help you look good, eat delicious and nutritious foods, and speak clearly and confidently.

Research has shown that as well as harming teeth and gums, infections in the mouth may also be associated with other more serious conditions. Fortunately, being ‘mouth-healthy’ takes only a few simple steps.

Dental care concerns at different stages of life: Pregnancy

Some women develop a condition known as Pregnancy gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums which can cause bleeding while brushing and flossing. Your dentist may recommend more frequent hygienist visits to prevent this. Pregnant women may also be more prone to cavities. Morning sickness can increase the amount of acid your mouth is exposed to, which can eat away the enamel, while eating more carbohydrates than usual can cause decay.

Babies and children Tooth decay in infants is often referred to as ‘baby bottle tooth decay’. Even though your child’s baby teeth are temporary, they are important in ensuring that adult teeth come in correctly, and are susceptible to caries. It is important to encourage good oral care in infants, to help protect their teeth for decades to come. Though sucking on thumbs or dummies may make babies and young children feel secure and happy, it can cause problems with alignment of teeth when permanent teeth start to come in. Consult your dentist if you are concerned about your child’s sucking habits.

Teens Cavities aren’t just for young children. Consuming sugary foods, energy drinks and juice can also make teenagers vulnerable. Always brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. If your teeth need better alignment, your dentist will suggest braces.

Adults under 40 If left untreated from an early age, this age group can be prone to gum disease, teeth grinding, TMJ Dysfunction, sensitive teeth, and discoloured teeth. Consult your dentist for different treatment options available.

Adults aged 40-60 Common dental concerns in this group are gum disease, missing teeth, sensitivity, dry mouth, and oropharyngeal cancer. Missing teeth can be replaced by implants, bridges or dentures. Make sure you tell your dentist about any problems you have when chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw. Regular dental checks are essential in the early detection of cancerous conditions.

Adults over 60 One common cause of cavities is dry mouth. Dry mouth is not a normal process of ageing, but is a side-effect in more than 500 medications, including those for allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pain, anxiety or depression. Your dentist can make recommendations to help relieve dry mouth symptoms and prevent cavities. Gum or periodontal disease is another common concern which will lead to loss of teeth.

Healthy habits Brushing your teeth is the key to good oral hygiene. Always brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. By flossing once a day, you help to remove plaque from from between your teeth in areas which can’t be reached by your toothbrush. There are different types of floss available, including interdental brushes which come in different sizes. It is extremely important to floss because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. Tartar can only be removed by professional cleaning. The good news is that you can practice preventative dentistry by adopting these healthy habits. Get regular dental check-ups at least twice a year - please do not wait until you have pain, by which time it may be too late and you could lose your tooth. There are also more serious conditions that your dentist will look for, like gum disease and oral cancer, which do not always cause pain until the advanced stages of the disease. By then, it’s more difficult and costly to treat. Sign up for a dental plan, as this will make you more likely to visit your dentist and hygienist at regular intervals.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

What’s the difference between a bacterial and viral infection? Bacteria are living organisms, i.e. a simple cellular being. They replicate when in an environment that suits their needs, which in the case of an infection could be our respiratory system. Viruses, on the other hand, are a piece of genetic coding. They can only survive within other organisms, and do so by hijacking their cells. Once inside the cell, they change the cell’s function to suit their needs and then replicate, thus creating an army of deranged host cells! When bacteria invade our bodies, they do so in plain sight. Viruses, however, are devious, concealing themselves within our cells before turning them against us. Our defence against the bacterial invasion is simply a case of attack, whilst the viral invasion requires us to work out which cells have been turned before the attack can begin. This is why viral infections generally last longer. Medication is of little help due to the concealment of the virus in our cells, and our pharmaceutical knowledge in this area is currently in its infancy. Fortunately, where human technology is struggling, our bodies have devised a way. Viruses are smart in that they only make changes to the inside of our cell, meaning they look the same from the outside. Fortunately, all our cells have little windows on the cell surface (they are called class 1 major histocompatability complexes), which enable special cells (cytotoxic T cells) in our immune

system to look inside. If they do not like what they see, they kill the cell. Some viruses can evade the cytotoxic T cells by blocking out windows, but humans have a backup plan. Natural killer cells are immune cells that count how many windows each cell has. If it detects a cell with a few windows blacked out, it will kill it, no questions asked! Fighting a bacterial infection is a simpler process. Antibodies are trained to recognise unwanted bacterial cells, and once they find a bacteria, they attach themselves to it, thereby marking it (a process termed opsonisation). At the same time: a) They kick-start a series of chain reactions, which results in the production of chemicals designed to severely damage or kill the bacterial cell it is clinging on to. b) They send out a distress signal to another branch of our immune cells (called phagocytes). These cells recognise the antibody and eat both it and the bacteria that is attached too. The phagocyte then displays a piece of its meal on its outer surface to attract another immune cell (T helper cells), which in turn kill the phagocyte. This way, the body makes doubly sure the bacteria is well and truly dead! The symptoms of bacterial and viral infections can be similar, but because they attack us differently we attack them differently. Therein lies the difference.

Dementia Friends

Wanted!

It is estimated that in Fenland there are nearly two thousand people with dementia, and the Fenland Dementia Action Alliance (FDAA) is taking practical steps to raise awareness of dementia in the local community. The member organisations of FDAA have announced their aim to create five thousand ‘Dementia Friends’ by Christmas 2016. A Dementia Friend is someone who decides to take one action to become more dementia-friendly in their everyday life, and who understands five key messages about dementia:

If your organisation - whether it’s a parish council, a community group, a shop, or an office - would like to join the Fenland DAA, or you would like to host a Dementia Friends session for your workplace, please contact Hilary Shepherd on hilary.shepherd@alzheimers.org.uk

1) Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. 2) Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain. 3) Dementia is not just about losing your memory. 4) It is possible to live well with dementia. 5) There is more to the person than the dementia. The FDAA was launched in May 2016, and already includes in its membership Cambridgeshire Police, Care Network, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire and Rescue Service and Fenland District Council. Chris Mackett, Chair of the FDAA, said, “Dementia affects us all – we may be caring for someone with dementia, we may come across people with dementia in the course of our everyday lives, or we may develop dementia ourselves. I recently became a Dementia Friend, and it’s helped me think about what I can do.”

The Formation of a New MultiAcademy Trust in Whittlesey On July 1st 2016, the Department for Education approved our application to create a new MultiAcademy Trust for Whittlesey. The new trust, initially consisting of Sir Harry Smith Community College, Park Lane Primary and Nursery School, and New Road Primary School, will be called the Aspire Learning Trust. We believe this exciting new development will have a very positive impact on the outcomes for our children, young people and local community. “Aspire Learning Trust strives to provide outstanding all-round education and care for the children in our community, from Nursery through to Sixth Form. Our schools work together to help every child achieve their full potential, to prepare them for their next educational steps, to teach them kindness and respect for all, and to equip them to play a full and satisfying role in society."

I will have the overall responsibility for the education of all the children in the three schools, and will work closely with Miss White, who is now the Associate Principal of Sir Harry Smith, and Mr. Litten, who continues to be the Executive Head teacher of New Road and Park Lane. The key changes will be in how the schools are governed, with a new Board of Directors being responsible for the quality of education across the Trust, and Local Governing Bodies directly responsible for the quality of education provided in their school. The higher-level strategic planning, HR, finance and infrastructure will now be the responsibility of the Board of Directors. The Board will then be overseen by a small group of members who ensure that the Trust is true to its aims and vision.

| A Moment with Reverend Nigel “Welcome to your Parish Church May you be at home here. For this is the place where the love of God is made known. Bring him your needs. Know His forgiveness and His power And pray for the needs of the world.” Our churches are open daily for personal prayer and visits, expressing our desire to be inviting, welcoming and hospitable. They are places of prayer, and for prayer. Please consider yourself not only a visitor, but an honoured guest. Make yourself at home in God’s house. God knows your joy, He knows your sorrows. Be glad or be sad. Stand and stare; sit and be silent; kneel and know that you are welcome. Offer yourself, just as you are, to God who loves you. I would like to bring to your attention our churchyards. The churchyards of St. Mary’s (Station Rd, Whittlesey PE7 1AB) and St. Andrew’s (Church St, Whittlesey PE7 1DD) are closed and not available for burials, though St. Andrew’s does have the provision for interment of cremated remains at the discretion of the Vicar and PCC. St Thomas’ (Oilmills Rd, Pondersbridge PE26 2TR) and Holy Trinity’s (North Green, Coates PE7 2BQ) churchyards are open, and permission is given according to the rules of the Church and governed by where you live – please discuss this with me if you have any concerns. I would also like to remind you that St. Mary’s churchyard consists of all the land within the walls next to the church, as well as the detached churchyard across Station Road. Finally, a gentle reminder to please respect the way you use our churchyards: even in closed churchyards where the headstones have been removed, the remains of people buried there still exist. Many thanks.

At St Andrew’s, the notice board which was fixed to the east wall has been made from new, and will be fixed back during the month. Matters • Retirement •

Popular local priest to retire in August Father Slack will be retiring, due to ill-health, as parish priest of St Jude’s, Whittlesea, and the Sacred Heart, Ramsey, at the end of August. He will be moving to a parish in Cardiff, cared for by the Rosminian Order to which he belongs. Father Slack has been our parish priest for eighteen years, and prior to that served in our parish as a relief priest for many years. He has been a minister, mentor and a friend to many people in the area, and he will be sadly missed.

see the romford drum and Trumpet corps at the Whittlesey Festival

We are proud to announce that the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps (RDTC) will be performing at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 11th. They are a youth military style marching band based in the London borough of Havering. Founded in 1957 by Richard Bouchard, they are one of the oldest independent youth marching bands in the country. Their striking green military uniform is strongly influenced by a close association with the Royal Green Jackets during the seventies. They have performed throughout the UK, Europe and USA, including at marching displays, parades, carnivals and concerts, and have previously appeared at the Royal Variety Performance. Some of their recent highlights include performances at the Beating Retreat at Horse Guards Parade in June; the London Marathon in April; a joint concert with the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, to raise money for the Gurkhas Welfare Trust; the London St. Patrick’s Day Parade; and the Nautical Training Corps Contest 2015, where they won eight awards including Best Overall Band (Open Class). The band’s wide-ranging music portfolio includes military marches, film themes, popular music and brass classics, often with solos from talented musicians across their brass, woodwind and percussion sections.

Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9:30am to 10:30am, on Saturday August 13th. Councillors present will be: Councillor Kay Mayor (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Rita Jolley (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

The band will be playing at different intervals during the day, and there will be an amazing Festival finale as they join with the Peterborough Highland Band for a spectacular massed band sound. The Festival has something for everyone, with numerous stalls, dance and music acts, rides and amusements, a craft fair, pony rides, a schools art exhibition, a huge vintage vehicle display, majorettes, a World War II flypast, and much more. Starting with a parade from the Christian Church in Broad Street (see the next edition of Discovering Whittlesea for the start time), the Festival will close around 4pm. For more information about the Festival, or to find out how you can get involved, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093, or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Students put their

‘Art and Soul’

into Exhibition...

On Thursday June 23rd, Sir Harry Smith Community College hosted its annual Art Exhibition of students’ GCSE and A-Level work. There was an amazing array of talent on display, and the exhibition was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended. Dawn Campbell, Head of Art at the College, said, “We are so proud of all our GCSE and A-Level Art students here at Sir Harry Smith. They have been such good fun to teach, and have produced some outstanding work this year. It has been a joy and a privilege to work with such an inspirational group of young artists. This exhibition was a fitting celebration of their hard work and dedication, and it was lovely to see so many visitors come to view it.”

GardenING TIPS for AUGUST Don't neglect hanging baskets and patio tubs - deadheading, watering and feeding will help them last through until autumn. Cut back perennials (stems and flowers) on plants which are looking tired, or already starting to die back. •

Cuttings of tender perennials such as pelargonium and osteospermum can be taken, and it’s fine to put them on a cool and light window sill until they are rooted. Hardy annuals can be sown at the end of the month to overwinter and flower next summer.

• Prune wisteria, and hebes and lavenders can be given a light prune after flowering. • Weeds grow actively this time of year, so August is a good time to spray with a weed killer containing glyphosate. Powdery mildew can also be very active now, so prevention with a fungicide spray is best. • Make sure early flowering shrubs like camellia and rhododendron are well watered during dry periods, to ensure good flower bud development. •

Prune climbing and rambling roses, which do not repeat flower or produce hips. Black spot on roses is very common at this time of year, and spraying will no longer be effective. Clear fallen leaves and burn them to prevent spread.

• Vine weevil damage can occur this month, so keep a lookout for any signs, and treat with biological controls or a good chemical. • Ventilate your greenhouse on sunny days, and dampen the flooring down to increase the humidity. •

In the vegetable garden, water tomatoes and peppers regularly to avoid blossom end rot, and watch out for potato and tomato blight. Use wasp traps in apple, plum, damson and gage trees, and lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners. It’s also time now to summer-prune restricted fruits (fans and espaliers).

Give hedges a final trim, and don’t water the grass unless absolutely necessary – browning of the lawn is very common at this time of year. It ill green up with the autumn rains. Avoid using lawn weed killers in late summer, as they will be more effective in the cooler, damper autumn weather.

• It’s time to start buying or ordering your spring flowering bulbs - even early daffodils can be planted now.

WHITTLESEY WI At July’s meeting, we were joined by Brian Pearce, from ‘Railworld’ in Peterborough. Brian gave a most entertaining and fascinating talk about how the attraction started, and what he and other volunteers have achieved over the years. It’s a place well worth visiting, and is so close to the city centre. More information is on their website: www.railworld.org.uk. August’s meeting is on Tuesday 2nd, at 7.30pm, in St. Andrew’s Hall, and is another open meeting. Philip Barker will give a talk on ‘The Natural History of Whittlesey’s Brick Pits’. New members are always most welcome. Phone Ginny on 01733 205148.

Excellent Results for Whittlesey Warriors Well done to the junior section of Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club, who, having won fifteen out of their sixteen matches, are champions of the Wisbech Youth U16 League. This has been a brilliant season for these ladies; in one game they even scored 105 goals, which is a now a club record. Their only loss all season, by just two goals, was their first game against Rookies A,

but they managed to even the score by beating Rookies A in the last game of the season to clinch the league. We must also congratulate our U13 Pink team, who finished as runners-up in the U13 League. Thank you to everyone involved in the junior section of our club - all your hard work is paying off.

COATES WI

News from:

The Coates W.I. meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Coates Village Hall, at 7.30pm.

Whilst thinking about ideas for a new name for our ensemble, I did a little research on the town’s previous band, a brass band, whose uniforms and instruments are in the Museum. I wonder if the museum also has the music?

The group is hosting a barbeque on Saturday September 3rd, at Holy Trinity Church at 4pm, which everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are available via the numbers above, and are £5 for adults and £3 for under-tens. Guests are invited to bring their own drinks.

The first contest record is 1899, at Burghley, where the band came fourth - the last entry was in 1936, when they came last. In 1905, there were two Whittlesey bands competing: the Whittlesea Kings Dyke band came fifth, and Whittlesea Town came third, for a prize of £3. In 1906, the bands came second and third, an improvement! Our current band is very short of brass players, so wouldn’t be eligible in the contests of our predecessors!

Guests are always welcome – for more information, contact Jen on 01733 840376, or Tricia on 01733 840145.

We are aiming to be a concert band, maybe with small ensembles taken from within, such as a brass or clarinet quintet, or chamber ensemble. The one we would struggle with at the moment is the brass - where are all the brass players in this area? I play brass myself and know the uncertainty people may have with playing with woodwind instruments, but the mix of tones and timbres makes the music all the more interesting and fun. Furthermore, I am the librarian, so naturally choose music with brass in mind.

The next meeting is on Tuesday August 9th at 7.30pm, and will be a ‘Bring a Plate’ picnic at St Andrew's Hall, in Parkinsons Lane. Every year, members arrive with an amazing variety of savoury and sweet treats for all to enjoy, and we will also be bringing old photos from past meetings to reminisce over. During the evening there will be an auction of surplus garden produce, jams and unwanted items.

Give us a try! We meet at the Methodist/United Reform Church on Thursdays, from 7.45pm to 9.15pm. Visit www.whittleseywindensemble.com or email:whittleseywind@gmail.com. Our next performance is the Whittlesey Festival, where we will be playing in St Mary’s Church.

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WI Our meetings continue to be great fun, and at the birthday party in June, members joined in the belly dancing with great enthusiasm.

Last year, all members received a W.I. Centenary Rose which we have been carefully tending. This month will show how well we have done when a prize bloom is the competition entry. New members and guests are always welcome at our meetings, and more information is available from Sue (01733 205927), Liz (01733 689599) or our Facebook page.

ADVERTORIAL

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering

the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Whittlesea, Coates & Eastrea areas and manager Mark Sherwood

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

| A word from... Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon As the months roll by and local Mayors settle in to either their first or second term of office, we all understand the honour we have in representing our towns. Never was this more apparent than when, as the Queen’s representative of Whittlesey, along with other Mayors, Lord Lieutenants and Deputies, we were invited by the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough Cathedral to attend a celebration of the Queen’s ninetieth birthday. It was a fantastic display of pageantry. As a result, I was unable to attend what I understand was a fantastic music festival on the Butter Cross, but I hope to be there for the next one on July 17th. I said I would keep you up to date on the parachute jump. I was invited by Prity to attend Sibson Airfield on June 20th to witness the event. The wind was light, and Prity managed her jump, in the process raising lots of money for her charity. Well done Prity! We also attended Cedar Court’s summer fete, and spent the afternoon in the sunshine, being entertained along with the residents. A good time was had by all. I also attended and presented the installation of the thirtieth

defibrillator, located at The Dog in the Doublet a worthwhile location for an excellent piece of equipment. I am currently filling my diary with local events that I have been requested to attend. If there is a function you would like me to attend, please let me know and I will do my best. We are looking forward to the Whittlesey Festival in September. Before that there will be a third music concert with the Motor City Vipers. We hope these festivals have provided something for everyone; all credit must go to the Projects Committee of the Town Council, headed by Cllr Steve Garratt. Please feel free to approach any Councillor if you require any help or information. All our contact details are on the WTC web site. Regards, Councillor Alex Miscandlon, Mayor of Whittlesey

Whittlesey Christian Church

Bitterness – is it worth it? I’d received an invitation from a church in Canada to teach on the subject of ‘Life Issues Which Can Destroy Us’. After the first evening, I was approached by a well-dressed, very successful businessman who had obviously been challenged by that evening’s topic concerning ‘Bitterness’. He clearly felt justified in holding on to the deep-seated bitterness he held in his heart towards his now deceased father. During the last war, his father had abandoned the family as German forces invaded Holland. He began crying as he recalled hearing his mother crying herself to sleep, after selling her body to the German forces just to provide food or clothing for her children. This gracious, loving lady felt so humiliated, that she wanted nothing more than to die. Once the children had grown up and started their own families, unable to handle her pain, she finally committed suicide; not because she did not love her children, but because she could not love herself.

Slowly and gently, I was able to help this gentleman see that despite his successful business, a beautiful wife, family and home, there was a void which nothing could fill, and a bitterness ruining his life. Thankfully, I was able to penetrate this bitterness enough to help him acknowledge that he needed help to bring an end to this, and find real freedom. During the final evening of the series, he publicly shared how, in the early hours of one morning, he found himself sobbing uncontrollably as forgiveness poured out of his heart towards his father. I will never forget the change in this man. For the first time in his life he was free from the bitterness which was slowly crushing him. Following the teaching of Christ to ‘forgive our debtors’ had finally set him free. Though space constraints prevent me from going into much detail, I’d finally just like to say that here at Whittlesey Christian Church, we are here to help you. God bless you.

1 What is your fondest memory of your childhood? Long distance walking with my family quality time together with simple living, although it did rain a lot!

2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? I’d have to say friends who were willing to accept me as the person I am, but loved me enough to challenge me and help me to change. If I had to pick one who has had the biggest influence it would be my wife, Anita.

3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? Paul, the apostle and writer of many of the books the New Testament. I would love to hear him talk about Jesus.

Paul Kosciecha

J.R.R. Tolkien. I would like to ask him how he came up with the concept of Middle Earth, and I’d enjoy hearing him tell the stories.

Paul was born and brought up in Watford. As a teenager he always wanted to be a musician, and followed this dream by taking music at Leeds University. While he was there, however, this all changed. Paul became a Christian at the age of eleven, but had never thought for a moment he might become a preacher. His university course took him to America for a year, and while there he believes God led him to take a different direction; away from music, and into a role where he could teach the Bible in a relevant way to people today. Paul married Anita in 2002, and then began to train as a pastor in Leominster. Since then he has pastored a village church in Herefordshire and, for the last eight years, he has been the pastor of a church near Swansea in South Wales. He now comes, with Anita and their four children, to Whittlesey to be the Pastor of Whittlesey Baptist Church. 44

4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Imperfect disciple of Jesus Christ.

5 What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey? Probably too early to answer as I don’t know the town yet. I’m looking forward to getting to know people, the town as a whole and seeing how the church can be involved in the life of the community.

6 What advice would you give to A 16-year-old YOU? Prioritise what matters! Jesus tells a story in the Bible about a man discovering a treasure in a field. The man goes away and sells all he has to buy that field because the treasure is so valuable. Jesus’ point is that the treasure above all treasures is the treasure of knowing him. I didn’t always get that.

7 What does the future hold for you? Our immediate future is going to be about getting to know people. Our prayer is that we might be used to serve in the church and in the town.

Generous Donations to Life-Saving Local Charities On Thursday July 7th, two local charities were guests at the Jenner Health Centre, where they were presented with cheques by staff members. Michelle Riley and Rachael Smith, who both work as Health Care Assistants at the centre, decided last year to raise money for two local charities. They chose No Gain No Pain (NGNPUK), who provide syringe drivers to the local community, and Defibrillators For All, whose work has allowed life-saving defibrillators to be installed around Whittlesey. Michelle and Rachael raised an amazing ÂŁ1900, which was split equally between both charities.

NEUTERING

Neutering is the term used for the surgical removal of an animal’s reproductive organs. Castration in males is the removal of the testicles, and in females a spay is the removal of the ovaries and the uterus. The operations are very safe, despite all anaesthetic techniques carrying some element of risk. Although considered routine because the vets carry out the procedure regularly, a spay is major abdominal surgery. However, the procedure is usually performed in under an hour, and animals have recovered enough to go home the same day.

Many people worry that neutering will change their pet’s personality, but this is not true.

Neutering can benefit all of our pets, not just cats and dogs, and can dramatically reduce the risk of certain types of cancers in both male and females, most noticeably mammary and testicular. Along with a sensible training programme, it can encourage calmer, less aggressive behaviour in dogs (though this is never guaranteed), and the younger they are neutered, the better.

have a season or any unwanted litters. Cats can start having litters as early as four months old.

Neutering can reduce the amount of male attention which females get when in season, and will prevent phantom pregnancies. For males, it can help reduce unwanted sexual behaviours, reducing the risk of aggression towards other males, and it reduces the chance of males escaping and seeking out a local bitch in season although again, this is not guaranteed. Bitches will no longer come into season, which also eliminates the risk of potentially fatal womb infections (pyometra).

Animals don’t respect family relationships, and siblings will mate, leading to unwanted litters, birth defects, and complications. Many people worry that neutering will change their pet’s personality, but this is not true, and neutering won't change the way your pets behave. Your pet may, however, put on weight. Animals that have been neutered do not need as many calories as entire animals, and so it is advisable to reduce your pet's food immediately after neutering, preferably choosing a specifically designed food for neutered pets.

With cats, neutering can reduce the chance of males fighting and roaming, and females won't

| The Local Music Scene by Dave Bailey

LET THE MUSIC PLAY Cambridgeshire’s local music scene grown from strength to strength over the last ten years, with new venues opening up for open mic nights and live music entertainment. Though there are often clashes of days, events are, in the main, well attended.

T

his resurgence of interest has fuelled a generation of young new musicians who are keen to hone their skills on guitar, piano and a variety of string and wind instruments. These performance opportunities are a springboard for forming bands, allowing them to move on to paid performances and ultimately recording contracts, or regular work either through agents, or as “House Bands.”

ranging from folk through to rock and poetry.

However, the road to success is not all gold; many hours of rehearsals, writing self-penned compositions, attending music events and time on the road brings success to just a few.

Since the reintroduction of an acoustic session at the Boat Inn (on the last Friday of the month, at 8.30pm), the age profile of the performers has dropped significantly. Initially folk-influenced and comprised mainly of songs from a bygone age, the styles have moved to a more all-embracing range which encompasses songs about ferrets, miners, and covers of the latest songs from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Oasis. All receive equal accolade, and are often accompanied by the other attendees and musicians.

As a town, Whittlesey has a comprehensive list of venues that support live music through paid gigs. These are usually weekend performances, open mic nights, acoustic sessions and karaoke nights, with genres

The powered (small PA and acoustic amp) night at The Boat is well attended, and usually starts at 8.45pm on the third Tuesday of the month. It features solos, trios, and poets, not to mention the occasional bands, comedians

and a musical saw player! Both sessions have been instrumental in improving the confidence and abilities of young and old alike, with the quality at each event improving and never failing to amaze the audience. All performers are welcome at both The Boat’s events, and the friendly and informal atmosphere is especially encouraging for new musicians. Live bands, musicians and singers perform on a regular basis at the Letter B, Quinn’s, Hubs, The Ram, The Falcon, The Railway, The Nag’s Head, the Ivy Leaf and Childers. Karaoke nights are a regular feature at The Bull, The Falcon and The Railway. Next month, we look at festivals and “on the road.” Open mic listings can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

Investing for Growth or Income

nvesting in a diversified portfolio can ensure that you do not have all your eggs in one basket. For example, a 'buy-to-let' property has been seen by many as a good way to increase value and generate an income. More recently, More recently, some of the tax advantages have been removed and, clearly, such investments potentially do ‘put all your eggs in one basket’, as they are highly concentrated in a single asset group (domestic property), with irregular expenses and potentially reduced taxable income when tenants move on. Another potential detraction can be that it is difficult to access some of the value – you either sell all the property, or none at all, and when property prices are low it may be desirable to delay a sale until property values improve.

proportion of your portfolio might be invested there, while other categories such as Financials, Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, Farming and the like have the potential to keep the investment performing well. There is also the option to select income, growth or draw-down profits at a time to suit your needs. Best of all, such plans can be sheltered from tax within a number of tax-efficient tax wrappers, such as pensions and ISAs, to suit individual needs. An Independent Financial Adviser has access to all of the funds available, and has sophisticated ways to access the most appropriate ones for a given situation that takes into account risk, reward and objectives. Most banks and Building Societies have dispensed with their in-house financial advisers and, in some cases, retained services are restricted to advice from a panel of providers, or even a single provider. A better review may be from an adviser that takes into account a wider range of solutions.

A useful alternative could be to invest across a wide range of underlying asset classes, including geographic areas outside of the U.K. The benefit here is that if property falls in value, only a small

| Local History by Jen Barback of Whittlesey Museum

Cholera in Whittlesey Cholera first came to Europe in a global epidemic starting in 1831, only six years before Queen Victoria's coronation. This ‘Asiatic Cholera’ reached Cambridgeshire in 1832. In spring, Ramsey was badly hit, and from there the disease came to Whittlesey via: “A man named Atkinson, who left Ramsey on May 23rd to visit his daughter, who resided and kept a school at Whittlesea. When he had completed about half the distance, he was seized with spasms, cramps and other violent symptoms. He preferred being carried to his daughter’s at Whittlesea to returning to Ramsey, and was accordingly brought to this town. Messers Boultbee and Smith, on visiting him, found him affected with all the symptoms and declared it a case of cholera. Next, two children, who had attended Atkinson's daughters school, were seized and died....After these three cases the disease spread rapidly around Ingham's End and Briggate, where it first appeared.” Although the doctors remarked that “compared to the number of cases, mortality will not appear great”, seventy Whittlesea residents died of cholera between May and September 1832, all recorded in St Mary's parish register. Most deaths were in June and July - not because the disease became less severe but because at the start of the epidemic

people “would neither admit the fact nor make any provision”, meaning that others had no warning and delayed calling the doctor until “the period in which remedies could be successful had passed”. Patients given ‘mercurials’, opium and fillers such as chalk or gum, when they had diarrhoea but no vomiting, often survived, but sickness caused such extreme dehydration that “the blood thickened” and the patient turned blue and died. During the 1832 epidemic, the official view was that cholera was caused by bad air from dirty living conditions, as doctors who tended the sick did not usually become ill. However, there were clues to the real mechanism - an infected drinking water supply: “The people (of Whittlesea) are in many instances comfortable and cleanly in their dwellings; still these people have suffered equally with the filthy, the intemperate and the dissolute... Briggate is seated on the banks of a stream, and some have concluded from hence that the disease attaches itself, or follows the course of the waters.”

Sadly, it would take another twenty-three years for this theory to be proven, and advice on boiling all drinking water during an outbreak to become well known. Summer Hols

BOREDOM

BUSTERS

How to cope with those long summer days! As August arrives, there are doubtless hundreds of parents for whom the long summer holiday from school doesn’t automatically mean relaxation for everyone, with fun and happiness from dawn to dusk. Far from it! It’s never been easy to keep our children, from toddlers to teens, totally occupied during the annual six-week break from school, and avoid the plaintive, “I’m bored – There’s nothing to do,” ringing out day after day. The cost of daily trips out, on top of parents’ time away from their workplace, imposes severe financial pressure, often leading to strained relationships all round. So here are some summer holiday ideas that won't break the bank but will hopefully help “bust the boredom” of the next month.

1

Grab the scooters or bikes and head for your nearest park and cycle paths for some fresh air and exercise.

2 3

Have a day in the kitchen; easy recipes for children include pizza, sausage rolls and cakes.

Picnic in your own garden, maybe even set up camp and spend the night “wild camping”. Your pets might like to join in too!

4

Have a board game tournament - blow the dust off your Monopoly, Twister and Cluedo boxes, organise some prizes and have a great day in.

5 6 7 8

Get some face paints and spend the day painting each other. Have a film day, hire some DVDs, make popcorn and settle in for some relaxation. Explore your nearest public gardens or park, take a picnic and make it an adventure.

Get cultural at your local museum and art gallery, by checking out the school holiday activities.

9 10

Spend the day at the beach; remember the buckets and spades and the sunscreen.

Meet up with some other parents at a local park and just let the youngsters hang out together.

11 12

Go bird spotting; borrow a bird book from the library and learn about the birds you see.

Dress up day; let the children loose in your wardrobe and have a laugh at their fashion parade.

13 14

Visit your local pool and spend the day splashing around, keeping fit and healthy.

Set up shop, using the groceries out of the pantry and cupboards and let the youngsters be the shop keeper and customers, make pretend money and you’re in business.

15

Visit grandparents/great grandparents and ask them to show you photos from when they were little and spend the day listening to their stories. They’ll love it too!

Good luck with these, and don’t forget that children will look back on the time we spent with them... not on the money we spent on them!

Park Lane invades the Isle of Wight! Primary school pupils from Whittlesey recently spent the week on the Isle of Wight, visiting a variety of places and taking part in a sea sports activity. The Year 6 pupils from Park Lane Primary and Nursery school travelled to Portsmouth, where they spent time looking around HMS Victory before heading off to the ferry terminal. During the week they visited Amazon World, Carisbrooke Castle, Robin Hill Country Park, and the Alum Bay sweet and glass factory; here, they also enjoyed a ride on the chairlift down to the beach, where they went on the Needles pleasure cruise, and finally they experienced a morning of sea sports, which included surfing and bodyboarding. The evenings were also packed with activities, such as playing rounders on the beach, trampolining at ‘Bounce’, and ten-pin bowling. On the final day

they visited Godshill Model Village, before travelling to Fishbourne to catch the ferry home. Lorraine Quince, IT/Communications at Park Lane, said: “The annual Year 6 residential trip to the Isle of Wight took place recently, with splendid weather. For many of the children, this was the first opportunity they'd had to travel on a ferry and, for some, it was the first time away from their parents. All the children were impeccably behaved and had a fantastic week, exploring the island's rich culture and its timeless treasures. As it was their last residential trip of their primary school education, it will certainly be an experience the children will remember for many years to come.” We very much look forward to repeating the trip next year.

‘Work Week’ at AJS

Thank You, Whittlesey Rotary Club!

On July 4th, Alderman Jacobs launched their ‘Work Week’ with a fantastic visit from the Mayor of Whittlesey and Judith Jacobs, from Moor Farm in Newborough. Throughout the week the children learnt about a range of different local jobs, and the world of work that lies ahead of them.

On July 1st, we were delighted to be joined for our weekly celebration assembly by members of the Whittlesey Rotary Club. The reason for their attendance was to present a cheque to Mr Litten, the Headteacher, for the very generous sum of £750.00.

Visiting companies included Wood Green Animal shelter, Caterpillar, the Cambs Times, and the Leicester Tigers marketing team. Through highly interesting and interactive sessions, the children found out about the skills needed in different roles, and also skills that will benefit them in any job. Highlights included Year 5 becoming reporters for the day, and having their reports judged by the editor of the Cambs Times; Year 3’s visit from Caterpillar, in which they were able to touch lots of different engine parts; and the local PCSO and Fire Department coming to see our Year 2 children. It was a fantastic week, which gave the children the aspiration and determination to push for their dream jobs. The picture shows some of our Year 3 children working on a project inspired by Anglian water.

The donation will be used to buy specialist books for the school. We hope the children will take these books home for several weeks at a time, so allowing them to research projects, improve their reading skills and gain pleasure from their achievements. All of the school staff, parents, children and governors thank the Rotarians very much for their kindness and support. We hope they will continue to visit our school to see how the books have benefited the children.
