Is it really a year since the coronation of King Charles on May 6th, 2023? However, so much seems to have happened since then, especially regarding the health issues of the royal family, as both the King and the Duchess of Cambridge fight their own battles against cancer. It is often said that we all take our good health for granted and it is only when we, or those close to us, are diagnosed with something potentially life-threatening, such as cancer, that we stop and think just how precious life really is and how every day should be seen as the opportunity to do something special, however trivial or inconsequential it may appear to be!
I know I’m not alone in enjoying the fabulous opportunities that having dogs (or any other pets) can give us, especially at this time of the year, as those long walks easily become such a crucial part of our day, admiring the handiwork of other garden-lovers, and taking in the sounds and scents of our local patch! Enjoy this month, and every day in it.
Unlike many people, I am someone who enjoys driving, particularly at this time of year when the weather is beginning to improve.
Sure, I don’t enjoy being stuck in traffic queues or navigating over-complicated new road systems, but in general it is something that I find strangely therapeutic.
At the wheel of my car, I can listen to discussions on the radio or to some of my favourite songs while I think about what I have to do that day or even occasionally contemplate the meaning of life.
However, one – but not the only thing – that annoys me is the bizarre refusal of some other road-users to use their indicators.
Sitting at a roundabout waiting for the opportunity to drive off in my preferred direction it would be a great help if some drivers actually gave me an insight into what their own intentions were.
I have a few skills, but one I definitely haven’t got is being telepathic, so if you see me heading in your direction at a junction, please let me know where you intend to proceed to.
Not only would it be the safest thing for you to do to avert a possible accident, but it would also vastly improve my blood pressure...

Family history stories are surrounded by family beliefs, superstitions and traditions. That is what makes family research so interesting. One saying for May is ‘Cast not a clout 'til May is out.' But do we know if this means the month of May or the may blossom on the hedges?
Old traditions are still carried on. Horseshoes are a popular symbol of good luck. It comes from a 10th century story. A blacksmith monk was working in his forge one day and the devil paid a visit. Noticing the devil’s cloven hooves, the monk offered to shoe them. The devil found this so painful he ran away howling. So, the horseshoe became synonymous with banishing evil. Which way to hang a horseshoe? There are many different answers. Whichever way you choose, just make sure they’re well nailed down!

Alot of people nd graveyards boring, but there are two in Wisbech that are a lot di erent from normal ones. But before I tell you about them, I should point out that I promise not to bore you with jokes about the Undertaker’s job being a dying trade or the council who are building higher walls around the cemetery as there are so many dying to get in.
ere are quite a few graveyards in and around Wisbech and for just over forty years it has been possible to get cremated. e crematorium in King’s Lynn started in 1980 and the one in March in 2010.
Most graveyards aren’t very interesting unless you are going to lay owers on a grave that is special to you. But there are two exceptions to this in Wisbech and surprisingly most people don’t get to see them.
Anybody can visit St Peter & St Paul, or the General Cemetery, or Mount Pleasant but the two cemeteries that you won’t easily get to see are the Octagon and the Quaker Meeting House.
e Octagon church in the Old Market Place had a troubled existence due mostly to it being badly designed in the rst place. Built in 1830 it was nally demolished 122 years later in 1952. A modern building took its place as a bank and then as a vet’s. A large wall was built between the new building and the old cemetery which was then forgotten about and left to gradually deteriorate. Except for an occasional visit the cemetery was left for more than seventy- ve years, but in 2019 a small grant was obtained to do the graveyard up so the public could have access.
tomb stones tell stories, some very sad. In days gone by, death was a very common occurrence. e rst burial in this cemetery was of a one-yearold boy in 1831 and the last grave many years later was of an 86-year-old lady. If you want to see this for yourselves the Octagon graveyard is open every Bank Holiday Monday and also Heritage weekend. e entrance is in the far end of Aldi car park.
e other graveyard that people don’t normally get to see is behind the Meeting House on North Brink which is just past Peckover House. All the Peckovers who died in Wisbech are buried there.
e rst burial here of a Peckover was sadly Joseph Peckover, the seven-month-old son of John Peckover and the last burial, one hundred and fty- ve years later and which was attended by many people from the town, was Alexandrina Peckover, last of the Peckovers who was eighty-seven years old.
Under the careful eye of Alan Wheeldon, an artist and historian, the graveyard is now a pleasure to walk around. It shows its age but at the same time it looks cared for. It has ended up being a very interesting place. Some of the
But the most interesting grave here and in the whole of Wisbech is of a French lady of Royal descent. is lady spent over half her life in Wisbech. She is Jane Stuart, natural daughter of James II. What makes it completely unique is to start with the grave never had a head stone. Instead, they planted box hedging which spelt out in letters and numbers J S, AGE 88, 1742.
is is remarkable and as far as we know, unique, but even more remarkable is that for more than 250 years gardeners have looked after this, year after year, after year. If you want to see it the Meeting House graveyard is open Heritage weekend.
Five years ago, a gentleman encouraged me to do something I had never done before, write historical articles about Wisbech and the Fens for local magazines. I have enjoyed writing these articles and hope to write many more, and I hope you enjoy reading them. e name of that man was Richard Gilbert who has just died.

products that are gentle on your fabrics and do not pose any health hazards to your family or pets.
The “truck mount” cleaning system which is used provides many advantages over most portable carpet cleaning machines. There is better suction due to a belt-driven blower. What’s more, the higher heat and pressure generated ensures a much deeper clean, extracting as much soiling as possible, resulting in cleaner carpets and, importantly, faster drying times.

With over 20 years experience of making bespoke made window dressings tailored to you. From Pinch Pleat to Eyelet curtains, Roman to Venetian blinds.
April and May provide us with the opportunity of making improvements after coming through the winter months, with the chance of more sunshine and longer days, this good feeling can be taken into your business with the enthusiasm that this all brings.
Steps a business could take:
1. Encourage reviews from both your clients and also your staff. This allows you to understand what you are doing right and the areas that you need to improve.
2. Look at the automation of your business records, by making use of technology. This can save you time and allow you to do what you are good at, and that is running the business.
With the impending introduction of Making Tax Digital this will become more important, and we have many colleagues who are leading matters with our clients on this.
3. Reward loyalty among your staff, whether this is through the payment of bonuses or gifts throughout the year. Such rewards can, in some cases, be advantageous for tax purposes for your business, something that we would be happy to advise you on if required.
4. Undertake more networking with like minded professionals in your local area. For example, being involved in the local
business awards, which is something that Whitings LLP do each year in many different regions.
5. Meet with your accountant on a regular basis and plan ahead for the coming year. By making use of their expertise you may bring your thoughts and ideas together into a written report which allows you to work within a framework.
It is always best to meet before you do something, as this can then be planned, rather than meeting after, when you are trying to solve a problem.
6. Execute your plans and continue to review them throughout the year to ensure that you remain on track towards your goals, whether this is growth, maintaining your market share or retirement.
7. Keep on top of your debtors and creditors to allow you to have the cash flow you need for your business.

Nott Johnsons, the well-known local coach company that specialises in running holidays, day excursions, and private hire, has joined forces with Hosier Xecutive Ltd.
On April 1st, Nott Johnsons became part of the Wisbech-based Hosier Xecutive group, which also includes Andrews Travel, but will continue to be fronted by founder Eric Nott and his wife Kim.
Nott Johnsons Coaches began operation in February 2008 when Eric saw an opportunity to develop his own business and purchased Johnsons Coaches which had been established for seventy years in Outwell and had been operated by Gary Johnson and his father.
Eric has been a bus and coach driver for forty-two years and has undertaken many local, national and international journeys, working for many companies in the Fenland area, and further afield.
Nott Johnsons began by providing coaches for many local group outings, and some school trips, but Eric also started to offer his own day excursions. In 2009, Nott Johnsons began offering coach holidays, alongside the day excursions, and private hire, and also operated a private school contract, taking children to Spalding Grammar and Spalding High School. Kim joins
most of the excursions and holidays, to make hot drinks for customers during the journey, and also manages the office for the business.
Nott Johnsons has established a loyal customer base, and some customers travel on all of the day excursions and holidays offered, with many becoming good friends with each other and feeling part of the Nott Johnsons family.
Recent customer feedback has included: “Just a wee email to say how much I enjoyed our holiday. Thanks for all you both do in the organisation of our holidays and making sure we all have a great time” - Mrs G, March and
“You both go the extra mile for us all, much appreciated” - Mrs T, March Eric has started to plan for his retirement and is excited to be working with Hosier Xecutive Ltd to ensure that the coach excursions and holidays can continue to be provided for customers.
Sam Hosier, of Hosier Xecutive, which has a fleet of executive vehicles, said: “Eric and Kim will continue to be the public face of the business. They’re a very popular couple with a very loyal following. I am looking forward to helping the business grow and develop in the future and to carry on their good work and to strive to provide an even better customer experience.”

Toenail reconstruction could be the answer!
Toenail reconstruction is a cosmetic or medical procedure performed by a podiatrist. We use a specialist gel that is layered either directly onto the nail or nail bed if no nail is present due to trauma or surgery. This is suitable for both men and women, with the option of a natural looking finish or gloss finish. This procedure creates a brand-new nail or covers unsightly or misshapen nails so that the nail is more aesthetically pleasing. This is perfect to disguise unsightly nails due to fungal infections, or damage to the nail bed.
This means that you can still have lovely looking feet for your holiday or special occasion and flaunt your feet in style. Nail reconstruction is not a permanent solution. The length of time that the nail reconstruction lasts will vary from person to person. The new nail will generally last between four and six weeks but can last longer depending on how much of the nail is damaged; after this time, the reconstructed nail is removed and a new one can be reapplied.
A reconstructed toenail may be treated in exactly the same way you would treat a normal nail, meaning you can apply nail varnish and use a nail varnish remover.
Contact us now on 01354 651200 for more information about how we can help your damaged, ugly nails look beautiful again!

The amazing story of Must Farm in Whittlesey and the insight it gives us into life three thousand years ago puts us on the map as one of the most important Bronze Age sites in Europe. It is a treasure trove of regular discoveries and I’m looking forward to dipping into the new publications that detail the story of the discovery and excavation.
The Must Farm pile-dwelling settlement dates from the end of the Bronze Age (850BC) and the circular wooden houses made from local woodland trees were built on stilts over water but only occupied for a year before they were destroyed by fire. As the buildings burned, their contents dropped into the muddy river below and were preserved, enabling archaeologists to understand how the roundhouses were used, the buildings’ architecture, and what personal items like decorated textiles, pots, jars, utensils, and glass beads the inhabitants owned. Thousands of objects survived detailing a life where inhabitants ate meaty stews, dumplings and bread, chops of pork, lamb and potentially honey-basted venison. Historic England, Forterra UK, University of Cambridge Department of Archaeology, Cambridge Archaeological Unit and McDonald Monographs have all been involved with these new publications and you can see some of the unique objects uncovered and learn about the excavation and stories that have emerged from the research at a free exhibition at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery until September 28th.
The Pride in Fenland Awards are a highlight in the calendar and it’s always inspiring and humbling to hear about the volunteers, fundraisers, carers, litter pickers and community heroes they celebrate. Many congratulations to all those who were nominated, an incredible 117 nominations for seventy-nine groups and people who strive to improve our community which shows the strength and depth of commitment in our area and how special so many of our residents are.
Winners are Helping Whittlesey Community Pantry which redistributes food that would otherwise go
Steve Barclay meets March Young Farmers to waste (Community Group Volunteers); nineyear-old Shyla Brown who has raised more than £2000 for a friend and his brother who suffer from the incurable degenerative Batten Disease (Young Individual); George Broughton, described as the ‘heartbeat’ of Feed Fenland which provides hot meals to those in need (Individual Volunteer); David Rose for his daily litter picking in Leverington (Environmental Volunteer); Alyssa and Scarlett Bass, aged nine and ten, who have had to call 999 four times for their mum who has complications with type 1 diabetes (Special Judges Award); and Evelyn Hamps (88) for her tireless work over decades looking after the Methodist Chapel in Doddington (Lifetime Volunteer Award); plus runners up: All Seasons, Chatteris; six-year-old Jack Page; and Geoff Howes.
It’s great to get out and about in the constituency and I had an excellent discussion with March Young Farmers at Hall Farm in Guyhirn on their priorities for the future of farming. There were lots of positive ideas and an opportunity to discuss the policy changes I am making to prioritise food production and food security.

More and more people are now taking the decision to purchase refurbished computers, and for those that are still undecided as to whether this is the best option, we’re here to give you the reasons as to why you should consider buying a refurbished computer.
Cost. Without a doubt, the main advantage of buying a refurbished computer is that these machines, which are almost new, or which function as new, are sold at a significantly discounted price, simply because they are no longer legally considered new. You can get a high-quality, top-performing model for a fraction of the price than if you had bought it new. Refurbished options can also be upgraded at a much lower cost. So rather than spend all your budget on a new device alone, you can buy a cheaper unit and use the rest of your budget on upgrades, such as additional RAM, a larger storage drive, or premium software.
Quality. Because you are technically buying a used
computer, you may be concerned about quality. However, reputable sellers of refurbished computers will thoroughly test, inspect and ensure their stock is fully working before it is sold. In fact, refurbished models are more closely inspected than brand-new computers! Naturally, there may be slight scratches and other signs of use, however these will not affect their functionality. A reputable seller of refurbished computers will also issue a guarantee.
Environment. Refurbished computers are an environmentally friendly choice and purchasing one will avoid sending yet another gadget to landfill. Millions of tons of electronic waste is generated each year due to new technology coming onto the market. Moreover, electronic items contain toxic components which can contaminate the soil and water if not properly disposed of.
But will a refurbished computer last as long as a brand-new one? YES! In addition, purchasing refurbished computers and using them for a longer duration
can also significantly reduce the amount of electronic waste created (as per the previous paragraph!)
Whilst there are significant advantages of buying a refurbished computer, do follow these tips to help reduce the risk of a negative buying experience:
• Check out the seller beforehand to ensure they are reputable. The less trustworthy the seller, the higher the risk of buying a refurbished computer that will not function properly.
• Make sure the seller will provide a warranty when selling you a refurbished computer.
• Talk to the seller about their commitment to selling you only what you need as well as their commitment to after-sales service.
Diamond Byte Solutions is committed to providing highquality refurbished (and new) desktops and laptops for home and professional use. ALL our refurbished computers come with a twelve-month guarantee.
