Welcome to your June issue...

Those longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin! Let’s all make a big effort to support those hardworking volunteers in both the Bourne Round Table, (with their ‘Bourne Festival’ on the weekend of May 31st to June 2nd) and in the Bourne Events Team, (whose ‘Picnic in the Park’ and Classic Car Show will follow on June 16th).

What’s more, to commemorate eighty years since the D-Day landings in World War Two, there will also be events on the Wellhead Park on June 6th; details are inside this issue.

It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing on April 19th of Belinda Neumann (known in her capacity as a first-rate lawyer as Belinda Smith). Her contributions to our magazines and friendship over the years have been much valued, whilst her inspirational take on life will be sorely missed.

A reminder to you all that June 16th also happens to be Father’s Day, so love and best wishes go to my dad, Bill; father-in-law, Rich; and my husband, Chris.

“By the time a man realises that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong”, according to the American, Charles Wadsworth. Does that ring true with all you dads out there? This month of course includes Father’s Day (June 16th), the day when we can be expecting to be spoilt rotten (yes, it applies to grandads too!) However, here’s the chance to treat yourself, just in case they’ve forgotten. Go to YouTube and the alto saxophone cover by James E Green of “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens ought to make you well up – it certainly does with me!

The recent rare appearance of the sun to dry up months of rain brought smiles all round. Let’s hope these “little groaners” will do the same: Her cheating boyfriend claimed he’d slept upright for five years – she soon discovered he’d been lying all that time. What’s more, he told her he worked as a watchmaker, but she could see he was just a ‘wind-up merchant’.

Sky Warriors

The legendary ‘Red Devils’ were among the finest combat troops of the Second World War. Created at Churchill’s instigation in June 1940, they began as a single parachute battalion of 500 men and grew into three 10,000-strong airborne divisions.

They served with distinction in every major theatre of the conflict, playing a starring role in some most iconic airborne operations in history, including the capture of the Pegasus and Arnhem Bridges in June 1944 and September 1944.

Saul David draws on multiple archives, published memoirs, unpublished diaries and letters, and interviews with participants. The result is a dramatic narrative of the airborne forces’ recruitment, training, and wartime exploits.

This book celebrates craftsmanship, buying things with thought, and valuing everything we own. Rethinking our relationship with clothing could kickstart thriving new local economies in places in our country that have lost out to globalisation, offshore manufacturing and to the madness of price and quantity being the only things that matter. 19 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9AE

Hera

Less

Today the average person has nearly five times as many clothes as they did fifty years ago. Last year, 100 billion garments were produced worldwide, 30% of which were not even sold, and the equivalent of one bin lorry full of clothing is dumped in landfill or burned every single second! Our wardrobes are full to bursting with clothes we never wear, so why do we keep buying more?

When Hera, immortal goddess and daughter of the ancient Titan Cronus, helps her brother Zeus to overthrow their tyrannical father, she dreams of ruling at his side. As they establish their reign on Mount Olympus, Hera suspects that Zeus might be just as ruthless and cruel as the father they betrayed. She was always born to rule, but must she lose herself in perpetuating this cycle of violence and cruelty?

Often portrayed as the jealous wife or the wicked stepmother, this retelling captures the many sides of Hera, vengeful when she needs to be but also compassionate and most importantly, an all-powerful queen to the gods.

Ember Spark and the Thunder of Dragons

A magical story filled with adventure, wonder and edge-of-your-seat excitement, set in a world of daring dragons and magical maladies by the best-selling author of “Sky Song”. Rusty Fizzbang, vet to magical beasts, needs an apprentice. Ember Spark, looking for

adventure, is his newest recruit - and together with an unlikely friend, Arno, she is sent to help a baby dragon whose parents have gone missing. But keeping magical beasts a secret isn’t an easy task, especially with archvillain, Jasper Hornswoggle, hot on their heels and keen to derail them!

“Excellent” Local Primary School Ready to Welcome You

Ayscoughfee Hall School in Spalding is an independent primary school for children aged from 3 to 11 years. ISI rated “Excellent”, the highest possible grade given, we pride ourselves on offering a warm and welcoming family environment, delivering the best possible education. The gentle introduction to school life we offer our youngest pupils in our kindergarten class provides a nurturing setting, giving a great foundation for future learning.

Our diverse and exciting curriculum is creatively delivered with passion and designed to inspire and ignite a love for learning and excellent academic achievement. Class sizes are small throughout the school, allowing our teachers and teaching assistants to really get to know, understand and value your child. Fewer children means lasting friendships are made and children feel more confident when it comes to sharing their ideas in class.

We teach our children to be kind, polite, respectful, and independent, encouraging them to always do their best and believe that everybody matters. Above all, we recognise that children are individuals and work with them to enhance their strengths and develop their talents, ensuring each child has a voice which is listened to, whilst putting the child at the heart of everything we do.

If you would like to discover what is truly special about our school, our Headteacher will take great pride in showing you around and looks forward to welcoming you.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see some of the wonderful things our children get up to.

AYSCOUGHFEE HALL SCHOOL LIFE

JUNE 2024 11 Bourne

Not only do crops benefit from the warmer days but so do the weeds and it is so important to keep them at bay.

It is best to hand weed near young seedlings but, when established, hoeing between the rows is advisable, preferably when the soil is dry – leave the young weeds on the surface to dry out and die.

Mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure, or bark chips, can suppress weeds, or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds. This will also help prevent moisture loss in dry weather. More importantly, make sure that you do not let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

The warmer weather and the prospect of a good meal entices a variety of bugs; three of the main “pests” are:

• Cabbage root fly – these attack the roots of brassicas and can cause a lot of damage. The female lays her eggs on the ground next to the stem so to prevent damage, place a “collar” (a piece of old carpet, cardboard or fleece) around the plant.

• Aphids – spray a mild concentrate of soapy water on the plant.

• Carrot fly – cover with fleece or surround the bed with a 60cm high polythene or fleece barrier.

You could also consider siting some bug boxes or insect hotels on your plot to attract friends such as hoverflies, lacewings, and hoverflies.

Other jobs this month:

• Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.

• Sweetcorn can be planted out and, as it is self-pollinating, it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.

• Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off and keep birds off your ripening strawberry crop by covering your plants with netting.

• Cut down broad beans just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.

• Feed tomatoes with a high potash feed.

• Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots.

• Sow Florence fennel. Traditionally, this is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea.

• Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn, and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted.

Happy planting!

Lilian Wyles of Bourne

Lilian Mary Wyles of 145 West Street, Bourne, overcame an array of obstacles to become the first-ever woman in the Metropolitan Police CID and later a Senior Police Officer, belatedly recognised today as a pathfinder in the profession. Her family owned the Star Brewery (later the Bourne Brewery) in Manning Road (on the site now occupied by Browning Court), and her father encouraged her towards a legal career.

Rex Needle takes up the story: “Lilian had a formal education at a private school, Thanet Hall at Margate in Kent, followed by a finishing school in Paris and then began studying for a career in law but was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. She became involved with the National Union of Women Workers, organised by Mrs Sofia Stanley, which was organising women police patrols to protect and assist young girls attracted to London from the provinces where they became prey to organised exploitation”.

After the war, Lilian joined the Metropolitan Police and was rapidly promoted through the ranks, becoming an Inspector in 1921. She was attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, “a closely guarded masculine environment”, which, by her own account, made her as unwelcome as possible. She worked extensively taking statements on cases of sexual assault as well as the welfare roles to which women officers were steered.

(1885 -1975)

Women Police Officers did not have the power of arrest until 1923. Home Secretary, Herbert Samuel stated, “It would not be helpful to women to give them powers which they would be physically incapable of exercising”. So, Lilian quite literally had to find a male colleague to make an arrest, which must have been infuriating. She described this as “undignified, if not ludicrous”, and was outspoken in getting the rule changed.

Lilian was assigned to the “Savidge case”, a ‘cause celebre’ which helped improve the way police treated women. In April 1928, Sir Leo Money, (a friend of Lloyd George and Winston Churchill), and Miss Irene Savidge, a radio valve tester, were arrested for public indecency. Irene Savidge was later subjected to “close and persistent examination”, lasting in all five hours without a female officer being present. Lilian testified how her senior officer “had railed against the ridiculous instruction that a woman should accompany him”.

The brewer’s daughter from Bourne retired from the force as Chief Inspector with a string of commendations, and remains an inspiration to women considering a police career.

IRethinking Financial Planning

n this month’s edition, I’m exploring financial planning and how it differs from traditional financial advice. In my opinion, the approach of traditional financial advisers has given our profession a bit of a bad rap…

+ Only accessible by the wealthy

+ Focused on selling products

+ An expensive and opaque service

Throughout my career, I’ve worked for traditional financial advice firms as well as, most recently, co-founding my own financial planning business, Finova Money Ltd.

But what is it?

In its simplest form, proper financial planning can be described as…

“Planning ahead, so that you have enough money to live your desired lifestyle forever, without the fear of your money running out.”

It’s about tailoring a financial roadmap for you and your family, so that you know you’re on track to achieve the things that are most important to you.

Whilst a financial planner does all the things a financial adviser can do, the financial planner goes one step further by helping clients answer big questions like…

+ Am I going to be okay?

+ When can work become a choice?

+ Can we afford to do the things we love?

Who is it for?

Unlike financial advice firms who may have big barriers to entry (£500,000 minimum investment, for example), proper financial planning is much more accessible.

It's for anyone seeking financial stability, whether you’re just starting out and need guidance with budgeting and saving, or whether you’re a seasoned professional, planning for life after work. As such, the level of service you require should be determined by your unique circumstances, not by how much wealth you have accumulated or ‘assets under management’.

How can it help you?

Building a roadmap which shows you where you are today and how to get to where you want to be will give you complete clarity over your financial future.

I’m happy to say that proper financial planning is on the rise and becoming more accessible.

This may involve…

+ Getting organised and tidying up your existing plans

+ Agreeing a bespoke savings plan to fill any gaps

+ Ensuring your plan is well-protected if anything happens to you

Armed with this information, you’ll feel confident about your future, knowing you have a robust plan in place to support it.

What next?

If any of the above sounds of interest, I’d be delighted to offer a free initial, 30-minute call to see how I may be able to help – just scan the QR code below. See you next month!

Five Million Over-50s Fear Answering the Phone

Solar Panel

Proofing

Imagine being fearful or anxious of answering the phone in case you are confronted by a scammer on the other end. Sadly, this is a real problem, with Age UK’s latest research discovering that almost a fifth of over-50s (equivalent to 4.9 million people) fear picking up the phone due to scams.

It also suggests that, for some older people, the fear of being scammed is restricting their lives, preventing them from using smartphones (8%) or the internet (7%). This can also increase withdrawal from society, by putting them off going outside (6%).

Fraud is easily the most common crime affecting people in England and Wales, accounting for 40% of crime, according to estimates by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Though fraudsters unfortunately take aim at everyone, older people are more vulnerable to certain types of scams. According to National Trading Standards, 90% of victims of doorstep scams, such as a rogue trader or fake charity worker, are aged 65 and over. The average age of a postal scam victim is 75. Phone scams also feature heavily in reports to ‘Which?’ from older members of the public, often related to investment fraud or scammers impersonating banks, telecoms providers and tech support specialists. Criminals may misuse 'number spoofing' technology so that they appear to be calling from genuine phone numbers, or trick victims into downloading screen-sharing tools to hijack their computers over the internet.

Age UK shared the following top five tips to help you avoid being scammed:

1 Stop: never do anything you don’t want to or make any decisions on the spot.

2 Check: always check their credentials.

3 Ask: always ask someone you trust for a second opinion.

4 Mine: do not give away personal information.

5 Share: share your experience with others to lower their risk of being scammed.

Would you know if someone was trying to defraud you? One of the best weapons against fraud is knowledge. Once you know the tactics fraudsters commonly use and the signs to look out for, you have more chance of avoiding them.

Spring has Sprung It is in the Air

It appears that winter has passed, and the birds are now singing with more gusto. Weather is fascinating … but the risks in life are always there.

We should always be mindful of who comes on to our land and who may be at risk if they fall or trip. Perhaps a slate is loose. Checking exactly what we are insured for can be tiresome, but it can save a lot of money if something does go wrong.

Flooding is an increased risk. What, precisely, are we covered for could just matter, even in Bourne. It may be mostly flat around here, but flash flooding can sometimes be a danger. Local roads have been covered with much ground water in the last twenty years. Autumn storms have caused serious

problems especially in Corby Glen and central Peterborough.

When we insure our car what will happen if we are hit in a collision? What vehicle will they supply, and can we get in it? It is no longer an option for parents to insure their children’s vehicles, as this could be a criminal offence if the parent is not the main driver. We must be wary not to be insured for the same risk twice. We could end up without insurance. It is often said that we can be driving exactly as we should be, but what if someone else is not?

There is no such thing as “no risk”. Do we have a will and Lasting Power of Attorney? Will there be assets for our spouse and children if we do not recover from someone else’s mistake? If we are acting as an executor, we must make sure that any houses are insured in the executor’s name.

Norfolk Neighbours

Norfolk is famous for being a beloved Christmas hideaway for the Royals, the home of England’s premier lavender farm, a wildlife haven for birds and seals, and a coastline brimming with Victorian seaside resorts. Luckily local coach company, Shaws of Maxey, are here to make sure you don’t miss a thing this summer.

Fancy sailing on a double-deck paddle boat on the Norfolk Broads? Sit back as this American-inspired cruiser winds its way past sleepy windmills and thatched cottages along the River Bure, bird spotting as you go. Using ‘Beans Boats’, sail out of Blakeney Harbour and get up close to the inquisitive seal colony that have made Norfolk their home. Summer months can be particularly exciting as this is when the common seals pup. How about Houghton Hall’s special summer showcase? This exquisite Palladian mansion is staging major solo exhibitions of life-size cast iron figures and delicate ceramic sculptures from Antony Gormley and Magdalene Odundo. This year, the Sandringham Estate hosts its 141st Flower Show, which is renowned for its exciting arena events, alongside traditional floral competitions and show gardens.

Following the opening of the King Charles III England Coast Path, the entire Norfolk coast is now accessible to walkers! The 75-mile stretch from Great Yarmouth to Hunstanton with Cromer, Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea in between provides endless joy.

Visit www.shawscoaches.co.uk to find out everything that our Norfolk neighbours have to offer and spend a day just ‘next door’ but feeling far away.

Health Depression

Whilst it is normal for everyone to feel sad or upset from time to time, when these feelings are overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your ability to function on a daily basis, it may be that you are suffering from depression.

Everyone feels a bit low sometimes, but depression is much more than this: it may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt, or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions, being overwhelmed, or not concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time. Without expert treatment, your depression symptoms may become progressively worse. It has the potential to impact on all areas of your life, from relationships to your performance at work or school.

Feeling hopeless and helpless?

In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active, and this part of the brain is normally very negative. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out and can be a lonely and unforgiving negative place to be. The depressed brain is starved of positive chemicals and restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually.

Want to stay in bed?

When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in

our duvets and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods. This type of worrying is typified by taking an ‘all-or-nothing’ thinking style. This is because when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point, the mind takes the fight/flight approach and looks at the worst, most extreme, scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed.

“A pill cannot make your unconscious conscious.”

How Does Hypnotherapy Help?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can offer an alternative approach, helping you to focus on the positives in your life and working towards a brighter future. It provides a bespoke treatment programme getting you to where you want to be and enjoying life again. Hypnotherapy is designed to manage the chemistry inside your brain to help you move towards an optimistic outlook. It provides you with coping mechanisms for life, which allow you to recognise negative thought patterns and respond to them in a healthier way, reducing the likelihood that you will become depressed again in the future.

Charles Frederick Worth

One of Bourne’s Finest Sons

The bicentenary of Charles Frederick Worth, born at Wake House in Bourne on October 13th, 1825, and founder of the “House of Worth” in Paris, will be celebrated in October 2025 at Wake House.

For anyone who does not recognise the name, here is an introductory biography of the man himself and why we should commemorate him.

Charles Frederick Worth (CFW) was born at Wake House in North Street, where his father had his solicitor’s practice, and he was probably destined to follow in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather. He went to the original Grammar School in the Abbey Church grounds until he was twelve. However, his father lost all the family’s money through unwise investments, causing CFW to become homeless and destined for the newly built workhouse in St Peter’s Road, (on the site now occupied by Warners Printers).

After an ill-fated trial as a printer’s apprentice, CFW used family contacts to gain a position at the prestigious department store of Swan and Edgar in London. CFW was well educated, intelligent and precocious, and he soon found himself assisting with the unpacking of garments, straight in from Paris. He started making suggestions on how to improve the look of these ready-made dresses.

He dreamed of Paris and eventually got on a steamer to France in 1846 with £5 in his pocket and went to seek his fortune! In Paris, he obtained employment with Gagelin, a well-respected fashion house. Whilst working for the House of Gagelin, he produced medal-winning items for both the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace (1851) and the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1855).

Feeling that he was not getting the recognition he deserved, he partnered with Otto Gustaf Bobergh, a fellow employee, and set up the

‘House of Worth’ and Bobergh at 7 Rue de la Paix, Paris, in 1858. Thirteen years later, Worth became the sole proprietor of the business.

His flamboyant, innovative style led to the creation of extravagant garments using large amounts of fabric in the form of a bustle. The designs he produced were strongly influenced by his interest in art and theatre. The use of French silk in these garments supported the French silk industry, and he employed both seamstresses and embroideresses.

CFW viewed his garments as works of art and dressed in a style befitting an artist. Each garment had a label with his embroidered signature, the origin of labels as we know them.

Fashion history has been made in Bourne, the hometown by the father of ‘Haute Couture’, the inventor of the bustle, the ‘princess line’ dress and the word “chic”. His legacy lives on in the use of live models, specifically in Paris Fashion Week, which still sets the standards for global fashion.

Keep watching for more details of events in the coming months.

I have been seeing Julie and Alistair for just over a year now and I am so grateful for their care, attention and flexibility during all my treatments. I just recently had my hay-fever injection for the second time as last year, it made me able to enjoy spring and summer without sneezing and itchy eyes constantly!"

Fabulous service and really welcomimg people. I have previously had the Vitamin D injection which helped with my low mood through the winter. I am now 3 injections into my course of Vitamin B12 and can honestly say that the change has not only been super fast but also truly amazing! I sleep better, am waking before my alarm in a morning, I have so much more energy and motivation and best of all my mind fog has lifted. I wish i had known about this 10 years ago. Thank you Alistair"

I have been going to Julie and Alistair for my B12 and Vitamin D injection since August last year. They're both very welcoming, and caring, make you feel comfortable straight away. Both very knowledgeable in what they do and great at giving advice. Always flexible at making appointments to suit. Couldn't recommend enough. Thank you"

Mind the Pension Gap

“NOW: Pensions” (an award-winning UK workplace pension provider) has recently published the 2024 gender pensions gap report which revealed that women retire on average with pension savings of £69,000, compared to £205,000 for men. Women face extra challenges when saving for retirement, such as a greater proportion working in lower paid and part-time jobs, which means that they have less to put into their pensions.

The report also showed that less than 30% of divorce settlements include pension sharing, leaving women more vulnerable to financial hardship.

If you are divorcing, the pension assets can be one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, assets in the marriage. Every divorce case, unless the marriage has been very short and the parties are very young, should include a consideration of the pensions. Either party, not just wives, can risk losing out on their fair share of a valuable asset, if you don’t find out exactly what it is worth and include it together with the family home and other capital, for sharing.

Family Law specialists will be able to advise you on the value of pensions, which is particularly important if they are final salary/defined benefit schemes, and arrange a pension actuary report if needed. Consult a Family Law specialist for further advice if this affects you.

Prevention is better than cure We provide - prenuptial agreements, - cohabitation agreements

How Do I Save Inheritance Tax?

One

Once asked, the conversation tends to go one of two ways. We can delve into planning strategies and mechanisms to ensure that all of a person’s allowances are maximised and that their investments are structured correctly, or we can have a much more fun conversation along the lines of “spend it or give it all away”!

A sad truth is that many older people are sitting on huge piles of assets that they are scared to spend because of a ‘rainy day’ that might never arrive. Many feel obliged to curtail their lifestyles so that they can pass wealth on to the next generations, who often don’t want it or need it. This means that, often, the best advice I can give is to enjoy your life, spend the kid’s inheritance, live for today.

But there is another way to give your wealth away that is massively tax-efficient and will make you feel good about yourself and the fact that you are making a difference in the world. Give your money to charity. Any gift to a charity is free of Inheritance Tax, and if you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, then your Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate will be reduced to 36% from 40%. This can make a big difference for your beneficiaries and the charities you wish to benefit.

If you would like to have a conversation about saving Inheritance Tax, talk to one of our experts by booking a consultation today on 01778 252301.

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Thurlby Tigers and Bourne Westfield Agree Pitch Rental Deal

Young footballers at Thurlby Tigers will train at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy from April to August, following a new pitch rental agreement.

Tigers’ Under-8 teams will utilise Westfield’s five-a-side pitch, whilst its Under-9 teams will access the seven-a-side pitch, on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The grass playing field facilities will also be used for occasional games on Saturday mornings until the end of the summer.

The first training session was held on April 22nd and included a visit from popular Peterborough United mascot, Peter Burrow, who posed for photos with Tigers’ Under-9 players, coaches, and club committee members, as well as Bourne Westfield’s Headteacher, Kate Atkinson.

As part of the agreement, Tigers have purchased new mobile goals which will be used by Westfield children in their PE lessons and football clubs. Access to toilets and a water station will be available in Westfield’s “Little Westys” nursery block, and on-site car parking is provided.

Since forming in 2006, Thurlby Tigers has grown to over four hundred playing members. It has an Academy for children aged Under-5 and Under-6, alongside squads representing every age group competitively from Under-7 to Under-18. Whilst most teams will continue to train and play at Lawrance Park during this period, the club needed additional playing facilities.

Chris Seggie, Thurlby Tigers’ Chairman, said, “We are the fastest growing football club in the area, and this is a fantastic partnership. A huge number of proud Tigers go to Bourne Westfield, and we hope

that younger children at the school will become aware of our club through this collaboration.”

Football Development Officer, Chris Binns commented, “It sends out a very strong message about our ethos as an inclusive, community-led, football club.”

Kate Atkinson added, “With Thurlby Community Primary Academy and Bourne Westfield both being part of the Keystone Academy Trust, we hope this can be the start of an even closer partnership. We also lease our playing facilities for netball training and are open to discussing with other interested sports clubs and community groups how we might be able to work with them on a similar basis.”

“One of the finest things to do this summer”

The Sunday Times

June 4th – August 24th, 2024

The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall, just two miles from Stamford, where each summer over 30,000 people experience the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious grounds, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other.

Enjoy great theatre in a stunning setting. Discover the Stamford Shakespeare Company and TYD (Tolethorpe Youth Drama) Theatre Makers at Tolethorpe this summer.

‘The

Recruiting Officer’

Opens June 11th

Step into the vibrant world of The Recruiting Officer, a rollicking romp, and the most popular play of the 18th Century. This uproarious comedy has it all: plot twists, cross-dressing, forged letters, mistaken identities, love triangles, hilarious disguises, folk musicians, and a host of colourful, comic characters.

New Restaurant for this Season

‘A

Midsummer Night’s Dream’

June 4th

The woodland backdrop of the Tolethorpe stage provides the perfect setting for Shakespeare’s most spellbinding of plays. As twilight descends, the theatre transforms into a late Edwardian realm of magic and mischief, where love’s spell weaves through tangled relationships - enormous fun for the whole family!

‘‘Sense and Sensibility’

Opens July 2nd

When their family faces financial hardship and social upheaval, the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, confront their contrasting approaches to life and love. Laugh your cares away with a captivating production that celebrates the strength of sisterhood in a Regency-era rollercoaster of comedy and romance.

Introducing the dynamic duo behind ‘The Fig Tree at Tolethorpe’, local brothers Grant and Nathan Worthington. With extensive backgrounds in catering and hospitality, they’re dedicated to showcasing the best of locally sourced, fresh ingredients, crafting a menu that’s not only delicious but also sustainable. The restaurant will open at 5.30pm to provide perfect pre-theatre dining. From salads and lights bites for £8, to a hearty carvery for £17, and delectable desserts from £3, there’s something to please every palate.

Ready-Made Picnics

Let ‘The Fig Tree at Tolethorpe’ handle the hard work with their Ready-Made Picnics. Priced at £18 per person or £30 for a picnic for two, they’re filled with a variety of irresistible treats.

‘A

Monster Calls’

Opens July 29th

TYD Theatre Makers return to bring you this dazzling story of love, life and healing - a production performed by 16-22 year olds.

66 JUNE 2024 Bourne

Words from the Mayor

TCOUNCILLOR BRENDA JOHNSON

in the afternoon! Finally, the Civic Service for the Mayor of Louth ended a wonderful, memorable year.

The Mayor of Market Deeping’s Civic Dinner was most enjoyable, whilst the following weekend found us attending the Civic Service for the Mayor of Stamford in the morning and then the Mayor of Sleaford’s Civic Service

his is my last post as your Mayor, and it has been a very busy month indeed. We visited Raunds to attend the Mayor’s Civic Service and it restored my faith in human nature because I was unable to complete the walk to the church without help. However, so many lovely people offered to help me. It was a very pleasant afternoon. We were also invited to the opening of Boston’s May Fair which was a beautiful day too.

We Have a Winner!

In our April issue, we invited our readers to enter a competition where the prize was a pair of tickets to see one of the four Stamford Shakespeare Company plays being staged at Tolethorpe this summer, starting on June 4th.

We are delighted to announce that Diane Wheatley is our winner, having successfully answered “Jane Austen” to the question, “Which of the four plays being performed this summer is the only one not to have been written by a man?”

Congratulations Diane and we hope you enjoy the show.

(Don’t forget to take your rug – it is the English summer, remember! – Ed.)

ANNIVERSARY

I would like to thank Bourne people for their support and I hope you feel I have done you proud. I would like to say a huge thank you to all who took part in the big litter clean-up in our town last month.

Please come along to the 80th anniversary of D. Day when Bourne Town Council will be having a small celebration on June 6th at the Wellhead Park from 8.30pm for an hour. The ‘Tuneless Choir’ will be there, and we will light the Beacon, followed by a very short firework display. And finally, don’t forget the Party in the Park on June 16th

BOURNE OLD TOWN HALL

FIRE HERITAGE FAMILY FUN DAY

Come along to the Old Town Hall and join in with fun family activities, learn more about the Fire Service, which was based at the Old Town Hall in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Come and talk to some real-life firefighters too, who will be there with the present-day fire engine! All welcome.

Entrance is free and the café will be open.

If you have a story about someone who was part of the fire service when it was based at the Old Town Hall, maybe a family member, we would love to hear your stories. Either come along on the day and share your story with one of the trustees or contact the Old Town Hall info@bournetownhall.org.uk
