Welcome to your May issue...

Is it really a year since the coronation of King Charles on May 6th, 2023? However, so much seems to have happened since then, especially regarding the health issues of the royal family, as both the King and the Duchess of Cambridge fight their own battles against cancer.
It is often said that we all take our good health for granted and it is only when we, or those close to us, are diagnosed with something potentially life-threatening, such as cancer, that we stop and think just how precious life really is and how every day should be seen as the opportunity to do something special, however trivial or inconsequential it may be!
I know I’m not alone in enjoying the fabulous opportunities that having dogs (or any other pets) can give us, especially at this time of the year, as those long walks easily become such a crucial part of our day, admiring the handiwork of other garden-lovers, and taking in the sounds and scents of our local patch!

What a fabulous few weeks of sporting activity in our area! Congratulations to Bourne Town FC who left the rest of the UCL Division 1 “trailing in their Wake” (couldn’t resist that one, sorry!) as they sealed promotion to the UCL Premier League.
Pleased to report that I was amongst the 20,000 Posh fans shouting ourselves hoarse at Wembley as we sent the mighty Wycombe “wandering home”. Unfortunately, I was unable to witness Mrs S beat her last year’s London Marathon time, as she and our daughter, Polly, cruised their way through the streets of Brighton –a case of older, wiser … and quicker!
And finally,
● When I heard that Bourne Bookshop was offering a third off all titles, I bought a copy of “The Lion, The Witch”.
● “Do you paddle left or paddle right when you’re in your canoe?” he asked. “Either oar”, she replied. Enjoy the read!

All Species Very Busy, Including Hedgehogs!
[ by David Denman ]A period of great activity, sound and colour is now upon us. Species are busy everywhere in response to longer days and slightly warmer weather
However, there are still similarities with earlier months. I am sure even the ducks are saying, “Why is it still raining?”
So many familiar sights have returned. Yellow flowering cowslips, so characteristic of spring roadside verges have put on a great show. Those early risers have been rewarded with a wide range of bird song in the “dawn chorus”. Those lucky enough to have garden ponds have reported good numbers of returning amphibians. Bright yellow Brimstone butterflies have been a common sight this spring, especially in sunny woodland rides. The long expanses of white hawthorn blossom, stretching around sodden arable fields has been a recent feature of our local countryside. I can remember a spring many years ago, spending days searching high, mature hawthorn hedges around Helpston looking for one particular species of early-flying, furry hoverfly that especially favours flowering hawthorn.
Closer to the ground, golden-yellow bee-flies have been seen in good numbers, hovering above flowers and areas of bare ground. As with most things in the natural history world these days, there is a digital recording scheme so that you can see where bee-flies are occurring across the UK (www.dipterists.org.uk/bee-fly-watch

Hedgehogs have also been very active of late with numbers probably heightened by our extra mild winter. We seem to have a great many in the Deepings, and they benefit from the gardens and the food provided by local people. I had a less than pleasant hedgehog experience one midnight recently. Two hogs decided to “lock horns” on the patio and I felt the need to go out and intervene! With one hog holding the other tightly in its jaws, I stamped on the ground and that made them stop.
They separated and then squared up nose-to-nose menacingly but eventually one ran off heading towards the dark lawn. To learn more about hedgehogs, visit the British Hedgehog Preservation

National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme
) where you can add the hedgehogs to the national distribution map so ecologists can identify the areas where they are doing well. Gardens now seem to be a real stronghold for the species with their more traditional habitats of hedges becoming much less favoured.
Looking ahead to May, swallows and house martins will become more common and swifts will start to appear from mid-May which is usually a time when the raucous cries of young starlings in roof eaves start to make their presence known.

May is one of our busiest months, but days are getting longer, giving you more time to carry out all the jobs that need doing.
Warmer (?) weather also favours weed growth (hoe regularly) and a variety of pests – how about planting flowers to attract beneficial insects and pollinators? Some suggestions are marigolds, sunflowers, cornflowers, lavender, sweet peas, and nasturtiums.

Seeds sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot, parsnips, to name a few, will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row to help the disturbed seedlings settle back in. When watering young plants and seedlings, water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots. Also, carefully hand weed between the seedlings to avoid damaging the new seedlings. They may also require protection from very wet weather (or even a late frost) or pests and diseases.
Indoor sowings such as leek, sprouts and summer cabbage can be brought out now but take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting in their final growing position. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches”, cutting down the two litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Leeks should resemble a pencil in size. Make a six-inch-deep hole with a pole or similar and pop the leek seedling in and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil. This will happen naturally.
Other jobs to do this month include:
• Earth up potatoes; when the leaves are about 20cm tall, draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high: this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green and poisonous.
• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.
• Put some straw underneath the developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew.
• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.
• Pot on growing plants.
• Some crops may require a support ready for their growth, such as beans and peas and climbing plants. Ensure it is sturdy enough to take the weight once the fruits have formed, as well as the foliage, and that it can withstand any winds.

• Seeds to sow out are too many to mention, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.
• Try “succession sowing”, a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.
• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages.
Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting: enjoy!

For the savvy homeowner, a wood burning stove isn't just a source of warmth –it's a strategic investment that translates into tangible savings on heating bills.

With rising energy costs, modern stoves offer an economically sound alternative with low fuel consumption, efficiently converting wood into warmth. At a time where environmental consciousness is paramount, wood burning stoves can provide both low-cost and low-carbon heating. Modern stoves adhere to stringent environmental standards, with significantly lower emissions than older stoves and up to ninety percent less than open fires, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. To maximise the efficiency and environmental benefits of a wood burning stove, it's crucial for stove users to adopt responsible practices, ensuring the sustainability of this age-old tradition. Properly seasoned wood, optimal burning techniques, and regular maintenance are all key factors. Wood burning stoves can be cosy, cost-effective, and conscientious. Environmental responsibility doesn’t have to sit on the back burner.

Long Ago, at The Bull

In June 1791, John Byng arrived at The Bull Inn, Market Deeping, with his horse and a dog. Taking a break from London life, he was touring round Lincolnshire on horseback, and noting his impressions in a diary. His verdict on the county’s inns was not flattering! Although the landlord of The Bull was civil, his red wine was not drinkable, and the bedroom cold and miserable!
Mr Byng consoled himself with half a pint of brandy and, after a hasty breakfast, was glad to leave, describing Deeping as “a very low, damp situation”. The landlord at the time was Seth Smith, aged sixty, who was also a farmer and churchwarden. The Bull had been trading in the Market Place for at least two hundred and fifty years, outliving three other Tudor inns. Its yard and stables were kept busy with up to eight stagecoaches changing horses there every day. Re-harnessing was done at speed, so that passengers had no time to alight, and waiters carried out trays of refreshments.

travel, but the charge of one shilling (5p) per mile was beyond the means of most people. In 1804, the inn’s stables were renovated and could accommodate forty horses. The main building contained “a very handsome dining room” and two other public parlours, with rooms upstairs for around twenty beds. The New Inn (Stage Hotel) had recently been built, offering more modern facilities on the opposite site of the Market Place, and was competing for wealthy customers and stagecoach trade.

In the early 1800s, The Bull hired out post chaises - four-wheeled vehicles, painted yellow, pulled by a pair of horses. A driver rode on one of the horses, with passengers seated inside the carriage. They were faster and more comfortable than stagecoach

Landlords at The Bull changed frequently, while still offering “every convenience for gentlemen travellers and others”. In 1818, William Lawrence advertised a fixed price meal at 2 o’clock every day. Known as an “Ordinary”, it was eaten at a communal table where joints of meat and fruit pies were set out for customers to serve themselves. Especially on market days, farmers and traders would gather there to eat and exchange news.

One regular at The Bull for over twenty years was John Banks, who died at the inn in 1823. He was a popular but eccentric man, who insisted on sleeping in the stables, despite relatives offering him a home. He was so attached to the place that, during his final illness, the innkeeper had difficulty persuading him to be carried from the stables into a bed!

How to Spot a Rogue Trader on Your Doorstep – or on that of a Vulnerable Neighbour

Spring is here and many of us are looking to spruce up our property, including the garden, driveway, fascia, and cladding. Whatever the job, big or small, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be “carrying out similar work in the area”.
Sadly, the 70-79 years age group is one of the most targeted, and according to Age UK, each year, around 1 in 12 (940,000) older people fall victim to a scam. Whatever your age, please be aware of these more common red flags:
• A van or vehicle that has been parked outside the house for some time or which frequently comes and goes.
• Your neighbour being kept talking on the doorstep for what seems an unusual length of time.
• Work being carried out with no obvious signs of health and safety – e.g., workers on the roof with no protective clothing or scaffolding.
• Work that looks shoddy, untidy, or unfinished, even to the untrained eye.
• Multiple ‘workmen’ on site, with frequent engagement with the homeowner with no apparent work being done.
Doorstep rogue traders have a knack of catching people off guard. Remember:
1) Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.
2) Don’t take their word for it when they claim urgent work or repairs need doing.
3) Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number.
4) Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out.
5) Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work.
6) Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach.
7) If you want to get rid of them but don’t feel confident in asking them to leave, take a leaflet and report it to the trading standards or 101 if you suspect something isn’t quite right.
So, if you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer, then always use a professional. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business.
If you would like to find a reputable and recommended tradesperson in your area, visit www.safelocaltrades.com and together we can root out the rogue traders!

+ Adding lots of value

Who do we help?
I love to work with clients when they are making big life decisions around…

Our proactive planning helps clients work through their options so they can confidently make the right decisions for themselves.

What do we do?
The way I work with clients can be broken down into the following three steps:
1Design – The initial planning process is all about building confidence and showing you whether you’re on track with your money. I’ll help review your current arrangements and provide advice and recommendations on how to improve your position.
2 Build – I’ll then build you a bespoke plan of how to achieve what you want in life. These are the actions you need to take and may include tax-efficient investments, such as ISAs and pensions, as well as ensuring your plan is well protected if anything goes wrong.
3 Progress – once built, we understand your life and priorities may change. That’s why our subscription-based service is designed to keep your plan on track and provide valuable ongoing advice throughout the year.

DSJ’s Forest School Journey
Since starting our ‘Forest School Journey’ in November 2022, Deeping St James Primary School has transformed an overgrown and under-utilized area into a safe and inspiring environment. With the support of the local community and the contributions of time and resources, we have created an exciting space where Forest School experiences take place every week. The area now boasts a fenced-off pond, base camps with stump seating and a majestic throne, fire circles with scaffolding benches, a mud kitchen, a tyre obstacle course, and bug hotels. The area now enables a range of Forest School experiences to take place which are designed to foster holistic development, curiosity and connect the children to the natural world.
Alongside the transformation of the area, Clare Seaton has trained to successfully pass her Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification, enabling her to deliver sessions throughout the school, during the day and in after-school clubs.

Forest School is in an inquirybased approach to learning, embracing a methodology where learners contribute to shaping their educational experiences. The opportunities offered include natural crafts, tool skills, fire-making, exploration, woodland management, and shelter-building to name just a few. These Forest School experiences help the learners develop both individually and enjoy the learning process.

Linchfield Community Primary School
Forest Area
Year 3 had a wonderful morning exploring the Forest Area, with its mud kitchen, fire pit and a bat house. A group of children looked for tree species, calculating their height and measuring the circumference of the trees to discover their age.
Science
Year 5 have been learning about materials and what happens when certain materials are mixed together. Some changes are irreversible, and we used burning and mixing plaster of Paris as examples of this.
We then used water and Alka Seltzer tablets to demonstrate this by mixing them to form a gas (CO2) which the children used to power film canister rockets which they had made, showing the mixing of a solid and a liquid to form a gas.

They are encouraged to calculate and take risks which then helps them to develop self-confidence, selfesteem, and interpersonal skills. As the sessions develop, our pupils are becoming more independent, selfmotivated, and considerate towards each other.
To celebrate Science Week and World Rewilding Day, Year 2 visited the Forest Area. The theme for Science Week was “Time” and we investigated the signs of spring, just as the season is changing. We discovered lots of daisies and new shoots on trees and flowers, and found lots of ladybirds, worms, woodlice, slugs and snails.
Staff Wellbeing Workout!
Thank you to Mrs Roberts for organising a staff wellbeing workout after school. Staff enjoyed the combination of aerobic exercise and a range of ’80s music and all left, feeling very happy and energised!
Year 4 Easter Egg Hunt
Year 4 children took part in an Easter Egg Hunt across the playground. They had to search high and low to seek out the paper Easter eggs which were then exchanged for a special Easter treat.

Hay Fever? We Are Here to Help!
If you are anything like me, then you are fully aware just how much hay fever can ruin your spring and summer months. Last year, I was excited to be able to offer a treatment that I know personally changed my life. With one pain-free injection, it is possible to eliminate your symptoms for the affordable price of £70... and it lasts for up to three months!
I am a registered pharmacist of over twenty-five years, and, during my practice, I became only too aware of just how serious the symptoms can be, and how many of you out there suffer unnecessarily. The injection is no longer provided by the NHS, so many people find themselves administering multiple products per month with minimum relief.
TREATMENTS WE OFFER
Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines
Downturned corners of the mouth ✦ Gummy smiles
Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hay fever injections
Fat dissolving ✦ Vitamin B12 injections
Anti-wrinkle treatments ✦ Hand rejuvenation
Smokers' lines ✦ Profhilo (five-point face lift)
Vitamin D injections ✦ Under eye treatments
Brow lift ✦ Cheek filler ✦ Excessive sweating
✦ Masseter Botox (teeth grinding) ✦ £70 per hay
The hay fever jab has helped me so much this summer. It's helped ease my symptoms. Alistair and Julie were so friendly and chatty, they put me at ease straight away and made me feel so welcome. Will definitely be returning!"

Last year at the clinic, I and hundreds of our clients managed to remove the need for all medication, both over the counter and prescribed, after this simple treatment. We found last year that our clients were typically spending over £30 per month on multiple products.
We are able to treat, not only adults, but also children who suffer during their school terms, as long as they are aged six and over, subject to consultation. As we all remember, summertime is exam time!
So, why not spare ten minutes of your time to reclaim your summer and make it “hay fever-free”?

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE
HOW IT WORKS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!
1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
2 HOW CAN WE HELP?
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:
• Which regions you’ll be visiting
• What activities you’ll be doing
• Your age and general health
Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.
3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?
● Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis
● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis
● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more NON TRAVEL VACCINATIONS ALSO AVAILABLE Chicken Pox, Meningitis MMR and Shingles
Appointments can be booked direct by calling 01733 253433 or pop in for a walk in appointment.

Setting up one of our adjustable beds or comfy recliners - all installation work is free and carried out by one of our trained engineers. We also provide free home surveys for stair lifts. Free next day delivery on all stock items. Simply call 01476 560044.

“I
Have Been Diagnosed with Dementia; Can I Still Update my Will?”

With an ever-growing and aging population, along with prolonged lifespans, an increasing number of wills are being disputed due to doubts over testamentary capacity.
Dementia is a condition predominantly linked with the aging population, and the number of people diagnosed with the disease is set to rise to over one million by 2025. Those familiar with it understand its impact on both the individual with the diagnosis and their loved ones.
Contrary to popular belief, receiving a dementia diagnosis does not automatically mean a person cannot make a will to say who their money and possessions should go to after they die. Instead, it depends on whether a person can understand and make decisions specifically about the will.
So, what would someone with a dementia diagnosis need to know and understand before you update your will?
You need to understand:
1 that you are making a will and the effects that doing so will have. This means you should realise that the will has no effect during your lifetime, but that it will dictate who looks after your affairs and who will receive your assets after you die.

2 ... what you own to be given away. You don’t need to know to the exact penny, but an appreciation of the value of your property (if you own one) and the amount of money that you have in the bank, or any investments is important. You would also need to consider any valuable chattels that you own.
3 the make-up of your family and those who might have a claim on your estate. This doesn’t mean that you must include everyone, but it does mean that you need to consider them and whether or not you want to leave them something.
If you can understand these three things, you can probably make a will. If there is any doubt, your advisor might ask that you undertake a capacity assessment with an independent expert. You shouldn’t be worried if this is suggested; it is just an extra level of protection that means you and your decisions will be respected.

If you need any help or advice around this tricky topic, call W&P Legal for a free initial discussion on 01778 252301.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.
If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
What are they?
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
Probate
What is it?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT

Gin and gin cocktails are amongst the most popular alcoholic beverages available and enjoyed today. These productions are loved very much indeed, and this has been the case for years –certainly, from originating during the Middle Ages.
Many different gins are widely available, and flavoured delectations have become increasingly popular during recent times. A lot of gin lovers add a tonic and/or a slice of lemon, to their preferred tipple. “Gin & Tonic” is a renowned ‘classic’.
The award-winning Jin Reaper Distillery is located in Sheffield, and their productions are known for consistency and high quality. The gins are produced in small batches and recall thoughts of myths and characters from past times, with labelling and presentations displayed accordingly. The handmade bottles used by the Jin Reaper Distillery contain gins to suit the tastes and palates of numerous gin connoisseurs, at all levels, with botanicals and ingredients being the finest available.
Jin Reaper London Dry Grim Gin (42% ABV) is a Signature Production, that I found to be crisp for the mouthfeel, which continues on to the palate’s delight. Jin Reaper London Dry Evangeline Gin (42% ABV) evokes thoughts of the Reaper’s Bride, coming through as a spicy gin and – reading into it – equating to the passion, desire, hate and love, from the spirits of the depicted characters. Cardamom and Cumin are amongst the botanicals utilised, to great advantage, for this delectation. A sweetness of liquorice adds to the enjoyment.
Jin Reaper London Dry Ferryman Gin (57% ABV) is their Navy Strength production. Yes, it is powerful, it is strong, and it is intense, for both the mouthfeel and palate. Ferryman is a further, very popular gin, from the Jin Reaper Distillery.
I found these craft gins to be most interesting and very much worthwhile taking the time to locate such distinctive productions. For more details, (stockists, online ordering, plus free delivery, and information about the Jin Reaper Loyalty Scheme) please contact and/or visit the website.
