Welcome to our May edition... I was going to start by wishing you all a “Happy Star Wars Day” for May 4th (“May the fourth be with you!”) until I realised it wasn’t even funny when I first heard it, years ago! Instead, let me welcome you to this month’s issue and hope there is something of interest for you all. The breadth of subjects covered in “Discovering Bourne” Following the advice of a reader, I’m opening with the mirthful moment this month. He was a bit concerned when his G.P. asked him what he wanted to hear first, the good news or the bad. “Go on, then, start with the good news”, he said. “Well, you’ll be pleased to hear you’re not suffering from hypochondria…..” Already a third of the year gone and a few days of serious sunshine have brought out the shorts and shades. The words of Thomas Hardy, when his Tess (of the d’Urbervilles) leaves home for the second time, “on a thyme-

is often a favourable comment which comes our way. Our regular contributors never cease to amaze with their enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to produce something both readable and most useful. scented, bird-hatching morning in May”, always make me feel glad to have such gems as Bourne Woods on hand, to really benefit from this most appealing of months. “More matter for a May morning”, says Fabian in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”. Much more indeed, for you all this month, as we focus our attention on two popular eating spots, Time for Tea and Julie’s Café. The tennis club, the Bourne Business Chamber, Harvey’s “Universal Fitness Centre” and Winkworths are also featured, alongside our regular contributors. Enjoy the words and make the most of these early summer days.

Must Have Spring/Summer from

During spring, new and exciting colours bloom onto the high street; bold and bright clothes come alive in an array of colours. This season, there is a colour to match the vibrant personalities of every woman. Trends to look out for include a variety of shades from pastels to bold and bright clothes. My recommended Spring/Summer investments include Ruby Shoo’s brightly coloured collection of shoes and handbags. The award nominated collection consists of playful patterns, including: floral, lace, and damask. Ruby Shoo’s designs are perfect for any occasion. For a casual look, team with a matching clutch bag from the Ruby Shoo collection with a pair of skinny jeans. This season, Ruby Shoo designs consist of hints of gold shimmer amongst the neutral shades; therefore Ruby Shoo’s designs are also perfect for occasions, such as proms and weddings.

Buckles and Bows stock light multifunctional shoes and accessories that are as practical as they are stylish. Their collection of light to wear Spanish espadrilles comes in a variety of wedge heights, designs and shades including: bright blues, nautical stripes, and radiant reds, which would look amazing against tanned toes! Team the espadrilles with a reversible 2 in 1 bag. The bags come in solid pinks, purples, blues and greens, and they reverse to show a polka-dot print! The bags are interchangeable, and can be transformed into an across the body bag, or large beach bag.

The above items are available in Buckles and Bows. Buckles and Bows are open every Monday and Saturday from 9 until 5. For more information call

GoING StroNG aND NoW BraNCHING out... It’s over seven months now since Carol Danylew left her established North Street premises in Bourne, to re-locate in Wherry’s Lane. Rather concerned initially that people would no longer be visiting her as much, time has proved her wrong, fortunately, and the very fact that business has become brisker than ever is a sure sign that Carol is providing a much-needed service. Customer loyalty and recommendations count for so much!

But what Carol has now moved onto will no doubt interest and excite many of our readers. With the unfortunate, recent demise of “The Crafty Patch” on South Street went the shop which was a very popular stockist of a wide range of craft and hobby items, sewing materials and knitting equipment. Carol’s Sewing Services can now claim haberdashery status, with the provision of knitting wool and a wide range of “Crafts + Hobbies” lines.

Why not pay her a visit and see just what this talented lady can do for you?

Carol’s main business is still to make alterations and repairs to all types of garments, specialising in wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses, along with prom gowns.

Find Carol’s Sewing Services at 9 Wherry’s Lane, Bourne PE10 9HQ, or call on 01778 393369.

ith the spring bulbs fading and the herbaceous border growing in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Spring flowering plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime as the lawn will love the warmer temperatures this month brings. If you’re in the garden this month you can be getting on with the following:

hoe for annuals and small weeds, mulches and planting membranes to keep beds and borders permanently weed free, and weedkillers to stop even the most persistent weeds taking over.

Roses need plenty of feeding if they’re to produce dramatic displays, so give them a diet of granular rose fertiliser. Remember to check regularly for pests, blackspot and other diseases and spray if necessary with a recommended insecticide and/or a fungicide.

l Lawncare  Your lawn should be growing fast this month so you will need to cut it regularly to keep it looking good. Now’s also a good time to feed the grass for a lush, healthy lawn. Weeds and even moss may also be growing strongly this month, so take action to keep them under control with a lawn feed, weed and mosskiller.

l Pestwatch  The late spring weather is perfect for many pests and diseases to get a stronghold in the garden, so make sure you carry out regular health checks on all your plants. Prevention is always better than cure so keep looking over your plants and deal with any problems as soon as you see them. A ready-to-use spray ensures you have something ready to hand as soon as you see the first signs of trouble.

But, you can plant them up as soon as you like, as long as you have somewhere protected from frost, with good light. By planting now they’ll look full and ready to burst into colour for the summer.

l Plant Up Tomatoes  Now’s the time to plant out greenhouse tomatoes for a bumper crop. You’ll need something to NO £5.50W 8 inch grow them in – such as growing-bags, /kg pots or growing rings filled with potting compost.

April was a busy month down at the allotment, planting potatoes, preparing the bean trench and seed beds and planting out a few seeds.

Now it’s a battle against the weeds! As soon as the weather warms up and seeds begin to germinate, the weeds seem to take over, so be vigilant and weed regularly. You don’t want the nutrients and moisture being taken away from your crops. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also, take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches”. Cut down your two-litre plastic drinks bottles, which then become useful for protecting young runner beans and peas.

There are numerous vegetables that can be planted out this month but try not to plant everything at once. Try “succession sowing” - a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. It is possible to grow two crops planted at the same time in the same row or bed, one fast and one slow growing , (intersowing) so that you get the most out of your plot. Fast growing crops include oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another. Sow outdoors: sweetcorn, sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, Florence fennel, leeks, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuces. Sow indoors: chillies, peppers, courgettes, pumpkins and winter squashes, runner beans, sprouting broccoli. May 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G

“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” What’s That All About Then? “Not very much to do with the month of May”, is the short answer! “Mayday” is an “emergency procedure word”, used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications. It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by mariners and aviators, but in some countries, local organizations such as police forces, firefighters, and transportation organizations also use the term. The call is always given three times in a row (“Mayday Mayday Mayday”) to prevent mistaking it for some similar-sounding phrase under noisy conditions, and to distinguish an actual Mayday call from a message about a Mayday call. The Mayday procedure word originated in 1923, when a senior radio officer, Frederick Stanley Mockford, at Croydon Airport in London, was

asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word “Mayday”, from the French “M’aidez!” which translates to “Help me!” Before the voice call “Mayday”, SOS was the Morse code equivalent of the Mayday call. In 1927, the International Radiotelegraph Convention of Washington adopted the voice call Mayday in place of the SOS Morse Code call.

BOURNE BRANCH STEPS UP THE POUNDS FOR MARIE CURIE

Norwich & Peterborough (N&P) Building Society colleagues in Bourne have stepped up to the mark to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The colleagues have raised over £550 for the Society’s “Hour of Need” campaign. The money raised will enable Marie Curie nurses to provide even more vital support for terminally ill people and their families across the UK. The fundraising at the N&P branch, on North Street, saw colleagues taking it in turns to try and accomplish 24,000 steps – a thousand steps for every hour in the day - on a stepper. Beverley Wood, Manager of the Bourne branch of N&P, said, “We know Marie Curie is a charity close to the hearts of many people in our community and we would like to thank everyone who sponsored us”. The Society is aiming to raise £500,000 by December 2016. If you would like to make a donation to the campaign, please visit www.justgiving.com/ hourofneed

Mothering Sunday Tea Party Boosts Rotary Mencap Challenge The Rotary Club of Bourne St. Peter has chosen Mencap, (whose Bourne office is on Cherry Holt Road), as one of their charitable causes that they are supporting in 2015. Mencap have several garden allotments on the Uffington Road site in Stamford which offer so much to those people using them. However, they lack some basic facilities, particularly toilets, including for those in wheelchairs. The Rotary Club project is to install a large log cabin, (4metres x 3 metres), with wheelchair access, to accommodate craft-based learning activities, which will complement the gardening, and allow more people to be supported, away

from the confines of their home accommodation. A separate structure will provide a composting toilet. A sum of £1,500 has already been raised, which has now been doubled to £3,000, by a Matching Grant from Rotary International. A highly successful Mothering Sunday Cream Tea event was held in the Bourne Abbey Church Hall on Sunday 15th March. Seventy people attended and enjoyed an afternoon of delicious cakes, pastries and sandwiches, all served with a variety of teas and coffee, using vintage china, with the hall decked out to suit the occasion. An impressive £474 was raised, which will boost the Mencap total even further.

Bourne Parish - Neighbourhood Plan Bourne Town Council and the Neighbourhood Plan Committee have agreed that the actual area for a Neighbourhood Plan should include the whole of the parish of Bourne, which includes Cawthorpe, Dyke, Twenty and Bourne. At the first meeting of the committee, a Chairman, David Hemmingway, and three Deputies, Joanne Dolby, Claire Saberton and Donna Walker, have been appointed. The committee will continue to be assisted by employees and members of Bourne Town

Council. The aim for the immediate future is to set up Terms of Reference for the committee, clear definitions for the various working groups and to look at initial targets for the plan. For further information and updates, please refer to the Bourne Neighbourhood Plan on Facebook; the website of bournedirectory.com; or contact Bourne Town Council on 01778 426123 / clerk.bournetc@btconnect.com

“Over half of people over 65 have been targeted by fraudsters,” says Age UK

A new Age UK survey has found that 53% of older people (aged 65+) believe they have been targeted by fraudsters. Whilst many do not respond, of those who do, 70% of all age groups said that they had personally lost money. The survey of over one thousand people by Age UK also revealed that a third of older people who responded to a scam may have lost £1,000 or more. Half of those over sixty-five said that they had received a phone call, text or letter that they believe to have been part of a scam, and over 25% of them said that they hadn’t reported it. The report from Age UK highlights the tactics used by fraudsters, including befriending or `grooming’ potential victims and isolating them from friends and family; the use of seemingly professional documentation and official-looking websites; impersonating a bank or the police and even threats and intimidation. With the new pension freedoms that came into force this April 2015, the Charity is warning that people over fifty-five, who will now have access to large pots of pension savings, are likely to be increasingly targeted by fraudsters. This may well involve carrying out a whole range of scams, seeking to exploit people’s interest in the change in the law, for example by enticing them to move their cash into bogus, unregulated investments or other forms of scams. The Charity warns that being the victim of a scam can have serious consequences for people’s physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and finances. Some victims’ health deteriorates quickly after a scam and, in the worst cases, has even resulted in older people losing their independence and needing residential care. Age UK is currently working with “Action Fraud”, as well as other agencies, to increase awareness of fraud and cyber-crime and the levels of sophistication involved, so that people feel equipped to challenge and report it. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go to www.actionfraud.police.uk/ report_fraud

Stamford

Shakespeare Company At the very centre of England on the edge of Rutland is a unique theatre which claims to be one of the finest open air theatres in Europe and was described by “The Stage” newspaper a few years ago as “England’s premier alfresco venue” and "The Sunday Times" "One of the finest things to do this summer" It is the home of the Stamford Shakespeare Company and their annual summer three month Stamford Shakespeare Season which this year celebrates its 39th year. It makes claim to offer the comforts of an indoor theatre with the charms of an outdoor setting, and on a fine summer evening the permanently covered, 600-seat 18

raked auditorium faces an open air, wooden decked stage set in an idyllic woodland glade. No performance is ever cancelled because of rain is the proud boast. The stage has a sub-stage enabling actors to appear suddenly through trapdoors, and a gantry above the centre of the stage hidden by tree branches enables fairies in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (performed every four years,) to fly down from the tree tops to the stage, bringing gasps from the audience. The theatre is in the beautiful grounds of the historic Tolethorpe Hall. There is a lawn overlooking classic English parkland enjoyed over 12 weeks by nearly 18,000 picnickers attending the theatre, and a hidden on-site car park is just one minute’s walk from all facilities on a compact three acre site. Throughout the summer months (June 2nd to August 22nd), the Stamford Shakespeare Company will be offering two Shakespeare plays:

Bourne | May 2015

“Henry V”, “Romeo & Juliet” and our nonShakespeare play, "Tom Jones"(Based on the novel by Henry Fielding)

Romeo and Juliet

The greatest love story the world has ever known, set amid the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Taking place in Victorian England with the Capulets portrayed as a gypsy family and the Montagues as traditional landowners, the bitter conflict between the families forces Romeo and Juliet to conceal their passion. The forbidden nature of their love leads to the inevitable tragedy. This tale of “a pair of star-crossed lovers” includes wild gypsy dancing and fortune-telling, murderous rivalry and thrilling sword fights.

Henry V

2015 is the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt and we will be commemorating this famous victory with this rousing and inspiring play. Prince Hal, the playboy of 15th Century England, turns military commander and statesman to defy the overwhelming odds of France on the bloody fields of Agincourt. Comedy, romance, treachery, triumph and disaster combine to paint a vivid picture of life and death in 15th century France and England

Tom Jones

(Based on the novel by Henry Fielding) Step back in time to the bawdy, funloving world of the 1700s with the hilarious romantic comedy of Henry Fielding’s masterpiece Tom Jones. Adapted for the stage by Joan McAlpine, we follow the life of Tom from his discovery as a babe in the bed of an honest, kind-hearted landowner, through his adolescent misdemeanours and on to the growing awareness of his attractiveness to the ladies of all ages. But Tom’s youthful recklessness brings him not only into the arms of a number of amorous women but also to the condemned cell. As he is led to the gallows there is a great commotion - will he hang, or will he escape the noose to marry his only true love Sophia?

Discovering...

...the watercress industry by Rex Needle

S

mall clumps of dark green plants can be found growing along the shallow reaches of the Bourne Eau in South Street between its source at St Peter’s Pool and Baldock’s Mill, a reminder of an industry that once thrived there. A continuing supply of good quality water is needed to grow watercress and as this is something that Bourne has had in abundance it was inevitable that someone would begin such an enterprise and in the late 19th century, Edwin Nathaniel Moody decided to give it a try. He was a nurseryman who established the town’s first watercress beds in 1896 on land to the south of St Peter’s Pool that he rented from the Burghley Estate Trust and soon he was producing so much cress that wholesale supplies were being despatched by rail from Bourne station to the markets in London and Leicester as well as being sold retail at his shop. Watercress is a salad vegetable that was used as a food and medicine before written records began and was highly prized by the Greeks and the Romans. There was still a demand for it and the venture was so successful that by 1911, a borehole had been sunk to boost water supplies to the beds which produced so much watercress that during the summer months workers were cutting daily and consignments were leaving Bourne at the rate of 70 hampers a week.

20

D I S C O V E R I N G

But the cress beds, which covered three and a half acres, have now disappeared. They were managed by Mr Moody until he retired in 1955 when the business was taken over by Spalding Urban District Council which became responsible for growing and marketing the cress under the trading name of the Hereward Watercress Company Limited. In September 1969, the beds were bought from the Burghley Estate Trust by South Lincolnshire Water Board which continued to run them until April 1974 when they were closed down and filled in and the area is now a riverside meadow owned by Bourne United Charities. Further cress beds that had been established by Mr Moody at the rear of Harrington Street (now Baldwin Grove) and at Kate’s Bridge on the former site of Waterside Nurseries, were also closed down. Ironically, their closure may have been premature because watercress is enjoying a revival today and small bunches now fetch high prices in supermarkets and delicatessens while dieticians praise its properties as a health giving food and a rich source of vitamins and nutrients.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Holiday Happiness!

Who doesn’t love a good holiday? It’s that one chance to take a break from work and all those daily stresses of everyday life. You can explore the world and spend some quality time with your loved ones. But just how happy do our holidays make us?

It is an age-old question that we really wanted to answer – so Travel Counsellors conducted a survey of the Great British public to see what was the key to their happiness. We received a fantastic response, and from the answers we received, we found that holidays really do make as big a difference to our happiness as we always thought! Holidays ranked highest on the agenda when it came to what made our survey sample the happiest, with a whopping 83% prizing a holiday above anything else. Way down the list, in second place was buying a new home at 12%, with just 4% telling us that a work promotion would be top of their happy list. These amazing results really do seem to highlight just how much people value their holidays. It’s so easy for people to get caught up in their fast-paced, busy lives – so it’s little surprise that holidays ranked so highly. You can take some time out doing what you really enjoy, whether that’s sitting by the sea, getting lost in a good book, or soaking up the culture in the local town. We went a little further in our survey, asking if holidays were important to their overall happiness – and a staggering 98% told us that holidays were significantly important to making them feel happy. But why do people feel so happy on holiday? We decided to ask our panel which part of the holiday experience made them happiest. Over 39% of people told us that it was the

Travel Counsellors

opportunity to de-stress and relax which created that sense of holiday happiness. Second in the poll was the chance to spend time with family and friends (29%), followed by the chance to experience new cultures (20%). Only 12% of people said that the weather was the part of their holiday which made them happiest – so it just goes to show that it doesn’t matter where you go, as long as you take the time to unwind every now and then! But it’s not just about happiness either. Holidays can actually have a significant impact on improving your health! Time away from your day-to-day routine has been proven to reduce stress levels in your body, and lead to more stable and rejuvenating sleep patterns. This all helps to do your body a huge favour, and gives you the chance to let go of all those physical and mental stresses and strains. So you’ll be happier and healthier, which is great! But one of the very best things about going on holiday is the special lifelong memories you’ll create. There is no feeling quite like enriching your life with an abundance of happy memories, of time well spent with your family and friends, in a destination which has changed the way you think about the world. So what are you waiting for? Don’t be too busy making a living that you forget to enjoy a life! Take that all-important time, and feel happier with a memorable holiday this year!

Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month – May 2015 It is estimated that around 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the usually strong support struts that make up the inside of most bones becomes thinner, which can lead to bones becoming fragile and breaking easily, resulting in pain and disability. In the healthy skeleton, bone resorption and formation occurs in a balanced and organised fashion, but in the case of osteoporosis, this balance is lost. In the UK, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will fracture a bone, mainly due to poor bone health. But osteoporosis is often a silent condition, giving no pain or other symptoms to alert you to the fact until the worst happens and a bone breaks. As such, many people living with osteoporosis are unaware that they have fragile bones until this happens, sometimes with devastating consequences. Indeed an alarming new study published by the International Osteoporosis Foundation suggested that 37% of men that sustain an osteoporosis related hip fracture will die in the first year following the break. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is usually conducted by a doctor using conventional radiography and by measuring the bone mineral density (BMD), through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. However, a special online screening tool called the FRAX questionnaire has been developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to predict and screen for the 10-year probability of hip or other major osteoporotic fracture in patients based on determinants generally accepted to be the key risk factors. This is done by answering 12 basic questions upon which the online program will then calculate the % probability and give you the option to view the National Osteoporosis Guidelines Group (NOGG) recommendations. This is something you can do yourself or we could help you with. Those that smoke or drink in excess of the

recommended daily alcohol intake are at greater risk, but gender, genetics, age, race and low body weight are all contributing factors. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. There is a lot you can do to prevent the condition, and to reduce your chance of breaking a bone if you do get it. Advice on healthy balanced diets, suitable exercise levels and lifestyle modifications can help to manage some of the risk factors, reduce the day to day impact of the condition and reduce the likelihood of a fracture. It is important to understand though that osteopathic manual therapy cannot cure osteoporosis and if you are found to be moderate to high risk it is advisable that you consult your GP. To find out more about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, contact the National Osteoporosis Society via their confidential helpline (0845 450 0230) or by visiting their website at: www.nos.org.uk

“Myzone” for Improved Performance at the Gym The Universal Fitness Centre on Cherry Holt Road in Bourne recently celebrated twelve years in the town.

T

o mark the occasion, owner Harvey Taylor has introduced the incredibly popular “Myzone” heart-rate monitoring system, the latest method by which those engaged in vigorous activity in his Fitness Centre, (and also outside), can ensure they are pushing themselves to their full potential. There must be hundreds of us who have been on that exercise bike, cross-trainer, rowing machine or the like, merrily keeping up a steady, comfortable pace, perhaps starting to glow a bit and wondering if the timer has slowed down! But is that the optimum use to which we are putting that apparatus? The higher the intensity of the exercise, the better will be the result, so surely, by knowing what our individual target could/ should be, and then having the means to monitor it on a screen before us, then all will appear much more worthwhile. A key part of the “Myzone” package is the physical activity belt, upon which the heart-rate monitor tracks your effort, guaranteeing accurate and personalised results. Other activity trackers may estimate calories burnt by counting steps taken, for example, but “Myzone” provides a much more thorough means of finding whether or not you are making maximum use of your work-out. Up to sixteen hours of exercise activity, outside the gym, can be stored within the

A key part of the “Myzone” package is the physical activity belt, upon which the heart-rate monitor tracks your effort, guaranteeing accurate and personalised result monitor, to be processed once you’ve returned from your bike ride or run, for example. Wearing the belt in the gym will then enable you, whilst on a specific piece of apparatus, to see the colour-coded, easy-to-read tiles on the screen before you, motivating you in realtime to put in the effort you know is required to attain your particular results. The “Myzone” Lite App allows you to review all of your “Myzone” account activity in the palm of your hand. Using your smartphone, you can monitor your activity calendar, workout graphs and challenges. Other features include personalised goal setting and also the ability to challenge your friends by accessing the real-time leaderboard, which helps make exercise a game.

area’s longest established osteopath clinic (next to Bourne post office)

The Hip and Sciatica The hip is a major contributor to all of a body’s core work. In fact, when we first learn to sit up as babies, we rely on our hip muscles, rather than the muscles of our trunk to do this. Repetitive motion like cycling, running and squatting can irritate the muscles in and around the pelvis, leading to chronic pain or limitation. This can produce a muscle spasm, leading to a pain in the buttock and leg, similar to sciatica. This is a debilitating and long-lasting pain. The secret is to stay moving even though it hurts, as the pain is being eased by using the buttock muscles. Jo Sunner. Osteopath, Pulse Practice, Bourne. Also at Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough

H

owever, often, when a person complains of hip and back pain, the “go-to diagnosis” is sciatica, which is actually a very specific source of pain. The sciatic nerve’s origin point is just at the top of the gluteal muscle (buttock muscle) in the lower back vertebrae. When inflammation occurs in this area, it can compress the sciatic nerve and send a radiating pain down the back of the leg, typically ending at the knee, but potentially carrying all the way to the calf. Sciatica is always caused by inflammation around the sciatic nerve.

The source of this inflammation may be low back pain, including a trapped nerve in the low back vertebrae. Pregnancy can also cause sciatica, if the position of the baby or shape of the uterus presses on the nerve. Inflammation in portions of the hips and gluteal muscles can also cause sciatic pain, but because the sciatic nerve is deep, the inflammation is typically also in a deep, rather than superficial, part of the anatomy. Sciatica is made worse by forward bending or deep flexion of the hip joint. In fact, you may know you have sciatica because the pain “shoots” down the leg when you bend over. Working to properly engage the muscles of the core (stomach muscles) will be essential in healing this injury. Even those with “strong stomach muscles” may need to re-evaluate all their stomach muscles, especially the deepest layer of them, to reinforce the strength of the back. Strengthening the low back, opening the hamstrings and reducing tightness in the outer hips will also help restore the spine’s natural curvature and function. Then the pain will ease. If you would like these exercises please call at Pulse Practice (next to the main post office) or telephone : 01778 426000. www.osteopathclinic.com.

Healthy Eating!

(Or... It’s not what you eat, it’s the way you order it!)

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies. 1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits.

Twenty-one Years for Julie at the Café May 1st 1994 and Julie McCutcheon starts work at the Papillon Café in Bourne’s Burghley Centre. As a pot washer, four hours a day, she’s thrilled to return to work, after the birth of her third child. Twenty-one years later, and owner since 2006, she talks fondly of her business, which has maintained consistently high standards across the two decades. Her present “family” of staff comprises manager, Nick Edwards; chef, Sam Garfoot; waiter, Kadhim Al-tayie and manager Katie Bytheway, currently on maternity leave. The “Saturday Team” of waitresses Helen, Sarah, Anna, Tilly and Amy ensure that Julie’s many customers are served efficiently and with a smile. The underlying impression I received recently, as Julie and I looked back over the years, was of her café being unashamedly family-oriented. Husband Peter provides much of the background support, their own children have done their stint,

whilst a bevy of past Saturday girls have left town for university and have then been welcomed back. Generations of customers have kept the café going as a thriving facility, at this ideal location in the centre of town. Many children who were brought in years ago, return to enjoy Julie’s hospitality and delicious snacks, drinks and desserts, but now with youngsters of their own. The range of freshly prepared snacks is impressive, and there are “specials” to provide variety, alongside the healthy, locally-sourced meat, fruit and vegetables. Why not pop in and see why so many people continue to call Julie’s Café their friendly, family local?

“Time for Tea” Ten Years in the Town Take one very experienced chef, add one of the country’s few qualified horologists, locate in a quaint, characterful, tea-room setting on Bourne’s Abbey Road. Allow ten years, to build an enviable reputation, by providing consistently good, nutritious food and beverages, alongside a thoroughly competent attention to quality, with watches and clocks, and there you have the essence of one of Bourne’s most popular shops… Time for Tea. 40 D II SS C C O O V V EE RR II N N G G 40 D

he re-locating of long-established decorators, Stringers, to their Manning Road premises, in 2005, enabled Andrew Spencer to create his menus and start appealing to the diners of the area, whilst Kevin Taylor could provide a much sought-after service in watch and clock repairs, sales and renovations – in the same premises – hence “Time for Tea”! The original décor was based on typical fashions in furniture, table linen, wall ornamentation and carpeting from the 1930s and 1940s. The ten year anniversary is being marked by Andrew and Kevin, ably supported by the indispensable Tracey Wilson, re-furbishing the two dining rooms with a sumptuous, retro-1950s treatment. This will include a number of the wall clocks from Kevin’s half of the premises finding their perfect display opportunity. Time has not stood still with the range of food on offer, and last year saw the addition of several new, American-influenced dishes. The menu now includes a large number of gluten-free and

vegetarian options, one of the many reasons given as to why customers keep returning. Andrew insists on local meat and fresh vegetables as the basis of his menu, many dishes of which are home-made. They’re also offering a special, where you can choose any two main courses for £15! Kevin’s impressive credentials and vast experience in the world of watches and clock supply, repair and restoration have led to his customer-base expanding nationwide. He has recently become a stockist for the “Storm” designer range, to sparkle alongside “Limit” and “Royal” watches, whilst beautiful clocks by Seiko, Woodford and Acctim are well represented here. Time for Tea remains a firm favourite for many people, and is another example of a Bourne business who, having found a formula which works well, can then provide the consistency we all seek. Congratulations, and here’s to the next ten years! uTime for Tea is situated on 11 Abbey Road, Bourne PE10 9EF. Call 01778 424287.

Like the garden at this time of year, Bourne Business Chamber has enjoyed significant growth of late, so now is a good time to remind all members, and inform non-members, of why the Chamber exists, and the objectives that we set for ourselves. In summary, these are… · to bring business and Bourne together, to make the Bourne area a great place to live, work, shop, visit, and enjoy. · to provide a forum for its members to meet and discuss local issues. · to act as a representative of Bourne-area-based businesses and, as such, to be in a position to speak and act on behalf of those businesses. · to inform members of events and activities likely to be occurring in the Bourne area. · to educate, impart advice, information and knowledge which will improve members and their businesses. · to support and assist members and their businesses. · to help promote members and their businesses. · to provide an environment to allow members to network and obtain referrals. · to do all of this with a smile on our faces …. and have fun! Given that we rarely refer to these published objectives, it is great to see that during our activities throughout the year, we have followed these guidelines and targets in almost every area; hosting informative talks, participating in local planning groups and by supporting local events and businesses. The group, as a whole, has made great progress and will continue to work for the businesses and residents of Bourne and its surrounding villages.

Time is Tight - Act Now Before the End of the Tax Year As the end of the tax year approaches, many of us are unaware of the financial planning opportunities that are available, just for the current year. These are, in effect, “use it or lose it” allowances. Most of us know about ISA allowances, but have we actually made the most of them? There are also major opportunities for pension planning, even for non-earners – who doesn’t want the government to give them money towards their savings? Under the new rules, the money is no longer necessarily locked away for years. If you are over 55, you can put the money away today, claim the tax relief and take it straight back out again, making a gain of 25% if you are a non-taxpayer, (even basic rate payers would make 6.25%!) This checklist covers actions which you could take to reduce your tax bill before the tax year end on April 5th 2015. The items on this list will not apply to everyone and it is not exhaustive. As with all financial matters, you should take INDEPENDENT financial advice, before making any decisions. All these transactions must be completed by the end of the tax year - as it is during the Easter holiday, in practice the deadline this year is Thursday April 2nd.

• Consider pension contributions for children and grandchildren.

Pensions

Capital Gains

• Maximise contributions for this year. • Use carry-forward rules (unused allowance from previous three tax years). • Pay contributions to widen basic rate tax band and reduce tax on capital gains, investment bond gains, etc.

ISAs

• Make contribution up to maximum of £15,000. • Junior ISAs for children and grandchildren up to £4,000 (if child does not have a Child Trust Fund).

Gift Aid

• Make donations (donor in a higher tax bracket) – can claim back the difference between the basic and higher rates of income tax on amount donated.

Inheritance tax (IHT)

• Make use of annual exemption of £3,000 (plus last year’s £3,000 exemption if not used). • Also, make regular exempt gifts out of income. • Gifts could be to life assurance arrangements, used as a means of removing tax from an estate by providing the means to pay the tax liabilities.

Investment bonds

• If cashing in a bond or surrendering segments, postponing a surrender until April 6th 2015 means that it would fall into 2015/16 and tax would not be payable until January 1st 2017.

• Use 2014/15 annual exemption of £11,000. • For trustees, the annual exemption for trusts is, generally, £5,550. I hope that this helps you make the most of your tax year end!

Keep Calm and Build Rapport Advice by Paula Finch

I was asked recently to run a training session at a company that was going through a great deal of change. Many of the delegates had been told they would have to reapply for their jobs and most had been told they had to attend the training session. Morale was low and, looking at the body language and facial expressions of those sitting in front of me, it was clear that learning was the last thing on their minds. What options were open to me to turn things around, to make the session I had planned into a positive and beneficial one for those attending? We all face difficult conversations at times, whether with our children, parents or partners at home, at work with colleagues, employees or customers at work. Conversations don’t always go as we’d like, or reach the best outcome and that’s because often the conversation happens before rapport is in place. Rapport is a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned intuitively understand each other’s feelings or ideas and communicate well. It’s that feeling of ‘getting on’ or ‘hitting it off’ with someone which sometimes comes naturally, but more often than not has to be built. The good news is that it can be built quite quickly once you know how: 1. Match the mood Watch and consciously match the other person’s posture and movements; listen and match the speed, pace and volume of their speech to

44 44

increase rapport. Back in my training room, I simply acknowledged that I was aware that there was a degree of uncertainty in the business and that some of the delegates might be feeling less than enthusiastic about the day. 2. Ask questions that are positive, non-specific and easy to agree with. An example I might have used would be, “I know some of you are wondering how much you’ll learn from this training, aren’t you?” 3. Use metaphors and stories Anecdotes and metaphorical stories that have a similar structure as the message you want to convey, but a different content, are a great way to communicate a similar point in a way that allows the other person to make sense of it using their own images, experiences and ideas. Rapport means being able to relate to others in a way that creates a climate of trust and understanding, and that’s a great place to influence positive change in any context. Let’s Live Together! (Cohabitants are not Spouses)

The latest British Social Attitudes Report recorded that a majority of people agree that it is alright to live together without any intention of marriage. Despite this widespread acceptance of unmarried family life, the powers that be are still stalling on changing the law to give rights to cohabiting couples. Changing the law has been recommended by two Law Commissions over the last five years, 2007 and 2011, and a recent survey of MPs revealed that 57% of parliamentarians believe the law needs to be changed to provide greater protection for unmarried couples on separation. The same survey revealed that 69% agree there is a mistaken belief in the existence of “common law marriage” amongst their constituents. Common law marriage has not existed in England since the eighteenth century. But between 1996 and 2012, there has been a three million increase of cohabiting couples in the UK, up to 5.9 million. At the 2013 Liberal Democrats’ conference, a motion was passed supporting the recommendations of the last Law Commission report. In contrast the Conservatives intend to introduce a married couple’s tax allowance. The Prime Minister tweeted “the £1,000 marriage tax allowance will apply to straight and gay couples, as well as civil partners. Love is love, commitment is commitment”. The stark fact is that when the love and commitment fall away, unless cohabitees own a house together, the rights you have in the divorce courts do not exist. If you have children there are provisions under the Children Act you can use, but

this is cumbersome and expensive. The moral of this tale, which has been told before, is to formalise an unmarried relationship with a cohabitation agreement to cover all the issues that could go wrong if the worst happens, and give you peace of mind to live happily ever after.

Adam Booker

Head Teacher at Willoughby School, Leeds United Fan, Proud Dad! The school system which we have in Bourne is often deservedly praised, both locally and from afar. Whilst the main-stream primary and secondary establishments bask in an Ofsted-praised glow, so too with the Willoughby School, (an all-age special school for pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties), whose reputation is second to none. This month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent, the inspirational and very popular Mr Adam Booker, now twelve years in post, shares with us some of his views. Married, with a three- year-old son and living in Morton, Adam sees his greatest personal achievement to date as becoming a father, (acknowledging, of course, the role played by Mrs. B. in the process!) On the professional front, nothing will surpass his being Head Teacher at such a fantastic school, and getting away with painting it in the blue, gold and white of his beloved Leeds United F.C. “I love sport of any kind - my penance is to support Leeds United, my pleasure is to watch England cricket”. (A sense of humour is vital in any walk of life! - Ed.)

1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I was born in Wakefield, but grew up in Durham after a couple of family moves including Scotland! Favourite memory of childhood? Playing out with my primary school mates and brother in the late evening on the local park all year round.

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

My parents and wife– their work ethic and my being terrified of letting them down keeps me going.

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?

My two late granddads – I didn’t ever get the chance to know them as an adult. Their lives and experiences have no doubt ‘shaped’ who I am - I would just love to have been able to take the pair of them for a pint! 48

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Bourne, and the surrounding area, is a beautiful place to live, and the community is so supportive of many different groups and organisations. I think Bourne should ‘champion itself’ in a wider way – the B.R.M. anniversary event, a couple of years ago, showed that the town and the local area can pull together to do something that shows what a great community it is – on a major stage. More of this would be smashing.

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

Work as hard as you can on your studies, don’t forget that life is for living … and don’t worry about what anyone, other than your family, think about you.

Schools |

Willoughby School Willoughby School is an all-age establishment for pupils and students, (aged from two years up to nineteen years), with severe and profound learning difficulties, and serving Bourne, Stamford and the Deepings. Willoughby has developed rapidly in the thirty-five years since its opening and is now regarded as a centre of specialist and innovative provision, supported by excellent teaching and learning staff and facilities. The school benefits greatly from its community supporters, with various businesses in Bourne providing the students with either work experience opportunities or support in their learning. The town also continues to go to incredible lengths, raising funds for the school. The school provides an individualised curriculum for each of its pupils, based entirely on their needs, with the core aims being to develop communication and independence commensurate with their needs. This may also mean that specialisms are developed for each pupil, and opportunities sought at other educational settings, such as Bourne Academy, where an excellent relationship has seen pupils in the last five years reach nationally accredited awards in Science, Art and Information and Communication Technologies. The school is continually evolving, with new innovative ways of teaching and learning being created. With the aid of community partners, Cummins of Stamford, a “4-D Creative Suite was

produced - a classroom with interactive surround projection to three walls and the floor, allowing pupils of any need to interact in specially created themes, which may take them from the Great Wall of China to the moon!

In addition to this space, there is a spa, which allows pupils hydrotherapy-type experiences; two sensory areas for promoting interaction and sensory awareness; and the only sensory integration room in a school in Lincolnshire - a space that allows pupils to follow specifically tailored programmes designed to assist in the management of their learning and reactions to the world around them. Many of these areas have only been implemented in the school due to the support of the community; a community of which the Willoughby School is proud and grateful to be a part.

A unique business model of independent owner-operators means that the Winkworth estate agency on West Street in Bourne, is, at once, something out of the ordinary. Since 1835, when the Curzon Street office in London’s Mayfair began trading, the nationwide brand that is Winkworth has been at the forefront in innovative service. Winkworth comprises a national network of individually owned and operated offices. The Bourne/ Sleaford/ Lincoln franchisee is Sarah Waldeck, whose local upbringing and longstanding tradition in estate agency means that the local business is in very safe hands. Office manager, Katy Bulmer, along with valuer, Adam Rose, bring almost forty years of local experience to the operation and have recently become partners of the Bourne office, whilst newly apprenticed, George Holliday, still has it all to do! One of the key facets of the Winkworth model is that their people are totally immersed in their local communities, some having lived locally all their lives. This means that not only is the client getting a knowledgeable appraisal of the local market, but also the advantage of learning about those “little things” from someone who can be trusted, having been part of that local community themselves.(Choice of school, a reputable plumber and a good local rugby club are, of course, not really “little things” at all!) The professional nature of Winkworth’s marketing of their properties is also very impressive, from the recent, five thousand “leaflet drop” within the town and surrounding villages, through its employing professional photographers, to its issuing of a most informative and helpful vendors’ pack. A long-established firm, a national network, top-quality marketing and in-depth local knowledge – some advantages indeed! | Legal advice by Hegarty Solicitors

Vince v Wyatt (the ‘Ecotricity Millionaire’) What does it really mean?

I

t is not a new concept that a husband or wife is free to bring a claim for financial orders against the other at any time after divorce proceedings have been issued even if the divorce proceedings themselves have been concluded. In the case of Vince v Wyatt, Kathleen Wyatt waited 19 years after the date the parties’ divorce was concluded to bring a claim for financial orders against her former husband Dale Vince, who by then was a multi-millionaire businessman.

The parties were married in 1981 and they separated in 1984. They had survived mostly on state benefits during the marriage and at the time they separated the only asset of note was an ambulance which the husband had converted into a camper van. In 1992 the wife petitioned the court for a divorce and those divorce proceedings were concluded later that year. In 1996, some twelve years after they separated and four years after the divorce proceedings were concluded, Mr Vince set up a business which is now worth £57million. On June 13th 2013, the Court of Appeal overturned a decision of a lower court and struck out Kathleen Wyatt’s claim for financial orders stating that she had no real prospects of success. However on the 11th March 2015 the Supreme Court overturned that decision stating that the Family Court does not have the power to strike out a claim for financial Orders based on prospects of success, unless there are no prospects of success because the claim is not

legally recognisable, for example if the matter had already been finally determined. However, what was possibly most surprising about the judgment in this case were the comments of Lord Wilson when he stated at paragraph 36 of the judgment, “Had it been relevant … to ask whether the wife’s application had a real prospect of success, my opinion would have been that it had a real prospect of comparatively modest success, perhaps of an order which would enable her ... to purchase a somewhat more comfortable, and mortgage-free, home for herself and her remaining dependants”. The case itself will now be heard by a judge in the Family Division and, if it is not possible for the parties to reach a settlement, the court will make a decision as to what the wife is entitled to receive from the husband’s vast fortune. It cannot be overstated that the lesson to be learned from this case is that you must take proper legal advice in relation to financial matters when you get divorced so that you can ensure that any financial claims arising from the divorce can be ‘finally determined’.

| Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”

Over the last few weeks, a number of readers have approached me requesting that I write about road safety regarding all road users, especially cyclists and pedestrians. This was highlighted only last year, with the terrible accident involving two schoolgirls who were hit by a vehicle while crossing the A15 at Northorpe. I was one of the first emergency responders on scene and the sight that met us will never be forgotten by any of those involved. Thankfully, the two girls have now fully recovered. There is so much I could write on this subject, and I feel that I cannot do it justice here. The government’s Think! website offers lots of advice about road safety, and in its “Tales of the Road” campaign, animated characters reveal cautionary stories focusing on various aspects of road safety. Approximately 60% of children badly hurt on the roads were on foot. The risk of a child pedestrian being involved in a road accident rises when they start school. This risk rises again at the start of secondary school. Campaigns, such as the Green Cross Code and regional “Be Safe Be Seen” activities, help children to follow safety guidelines. It is particularly important that children follow

the rules in the Green Cross Code, because research shows that young children can’t accurately judge how fast vehicles are going or how far away they are.

Green Cross Code

Find a safe place to cross. If possible, cross the road using a pedestrian crossing or where there is a school crossing patrol. If there isn’t an established crossing point nearby, choose a place where you can see clearly in all directions and where drivers can see you. Don’t try to cross between parked cars. Stop just before you get to the kerb. Don’t get too close to the traffic. If there’s no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road, but make sure you can still see approaching traffic. Look all around for traffic and listen. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Don’t cross until there’s a safe gap in the traffic and you’re certain that there’s plenty of time. When it’s safe, walk straight across the road without running. Research has found that teenagers are easily distracted on the roads, especially when they’re with a group of friends. To reduce the risk, give the road your full attention when you’re crossing. Look out for friends too. Don’t use your mobile while you’re crossing. Don’t take chances when you cross the road! There are no special rules for walking on or crossing country roads. However, country roads often have no pavement, particularly single-track roads. If there is no pavement, you should keep to the right-hand side of the road so that you can see oncoming traffic. If there are several of you walking, be prepared to walk in single file. It is especially important on narrow roads, or in poor light, to keep close to the side of the road. Always make sure that you are visible to oncoming traffic. I will revisit this subject at a later date to consider road safety for other road users. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

| Spotlight on clubs

Always a Welcome at Bourne & District Lawn Tennis Club The month of May heralds the start of the eagerly awaited lawn tennis season at the Abbey Lawn in Bourne. The five grass courts are situated in the magnificent walled Monks Garden and are the perfect setting for those wishing to participate in organised social tennis, league matches, or simply come down for a friendly ‘knock’. The tennis pavilion adjacent to the grass courts provides facilities for refreshments and changing rooms when social tennis is being played. Social tennis, match play and a coaching programme are the cornerstones of the club. Social tennis sessions for members are on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings. The club enters teams in the Lincolnshire, Peterborough and District, and AEGON tennis leagues. The Men’s AEGON team finished runners-up last summer in Division One, and will be hoping to build on this success. Important to the club is the Junior Development Programme, run in conjunction with the club’s coaching partner, B2Tennis. Regular junior coaching sessions for all abilities are held on a

Friday afternoon from 4pm, and Saturday from 9am. Additional performance programmes help young players to further develop skills, providing a gateway to being part of a team, and playing in AEGON and LTA tournaments. Personal coaching for all members is also available. The club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), entitling members to have free British Tennis Membership and inclusion in the Wimbledon Ticket Ballot. Also, through the LTA, the club is working towards Sports England Tennismark Accreditation, an endorsement of being one of the best run clubs in the area. The club has a registered Child Protection Officer on the committee. New members are always welcome, and those thinking of joining and wishing to sample the experience of membership beforehand are invited to join a social tennis session as a visitor to the club. Contact Brian Walsh for further details through the website. So, dust off those racquets, put on your tennis gear and come and join in the fun in the most picturesque of settings for tennis.

Visit our website at www.bournetennisclub.com for more information about membership, visitor fees, club events, court availability and opening times, or follow us on Facebook (/bournetennisclub). For coaching information contact simon@b2tennis.co.uk. 58

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Changes on the Way Welcome to all readers to the motoring section. Whilst the sun has been shining brightly, Bourne, very sadly continues to suffer with some tragic road accidents, in and around our area, which is very troubling. Barely a day goes by on my travels, providing driving lessons, where an emergency service vehicle does not feature at some point. But I think it is worth pointing out that there are also daily demonstrations of very considerate and safe driving too. It is very easy to concentrate on only the incidents where things have gone horribly wrong, but I must say that I often see very courteous driving on our Bourne roads, and the patience shown by many drivers for people learning to drive is often unbelievably kind and thoughtful. So a big thank-you goes out to all drivers who are contributing to making our local roads safe and helping to keep journeys stress-free. It is also the fact that things are continually changing in the driving world. There has recently been a pilot scheme started in several Driving Test Centres across the UK to explore the benefits of making some changes to the structure of the car driving test. There is the possibility of having a section in the test that includes showing that you can drive with the assistance of a sat nav in the car. There may well be slight amendments to the type of manoeuvre that you will be asked to perform. These changes attempt to reflect the way in which our driving behaviour is evolving. We will have to wait and see the results, and I will keep you all informed if the changes become approved. On the subject of legislative changes, we do have some ready to be rolled out later in the year. You may have already heard the radio ads that mention the new drugdriving law, with stricter detection criteria to combat driving while impaired through drugs. Next month marks the end of the paper counterpart of the driving licence, as occurred with the paper tax disc last year.

up a cigarette in a car in England when there is another occupant in the car below the age of eighteen. There is talk that driving alone, or in a convertible car with the top down, are exemptions to the ban. But I imagine there will be a similar campaign as with drug- driving, to raise the awareness with the general public nearer the time. On a lighter note, it’s a real pleasure being out and about in this beautiful sunshine in my driving school car. Do please give me a wave if you see me on your travels in and around Bourne; my day is made all the better for seeing smiling faces. As ever, if you have any comments/opinions regarding this article, feel free to email me on info@BIGTOM.org.uk

The Girl in the Shadows A Short Story by Emma Shrapel, (A Year 11 Student at Bourne Academy) Part 2 (of 3)

The town’s people believed that nothing natural nor pure could have caused such a beast that could destroy everything and anything in its path. No, they believed that only dark and powerful magic could have done such a thing! One week after the storm, a late night council meeting was held and it was decided that the girl in the shadows would have to be stopped. So, after careful selection, ten of the town’s most brave and honourable men were chosen to end her, once and for all. They moved silently through the streets, their heavy, nervous breathing the only sound. The dirt track, shadowed by tall oak trees that led to the deserted barn, came into view. Their feet crunched on the gravel, their warm breath cast small clouds in the night air and their hearts raced. However, whatever the men felt and feared would have to wait. Ten long wooden spears awaited the men when they entered the barn, and behind the spears’ protection, stood the girl in the shadows. Her long blue cloak and dark hair continued to hide her identity. “Go now and I will not use these weapons on you”, her harsh but at the same time methodical voice whispered. One of the men stepped forward: “You do not get to tell us what to do, nor do you get to destroy our homes and livelihoods without paying a price.” The girl moved towards the barrier of spears: “If you speak of the storm, it was not I who caused it.” “What else would it be?” another of the ten men challenged. “You make people live in fear of you so that you can practise your dark magic in private.” A silence fell across them as the men held their breath waiting for the girl to respond. “You are right that I make people scared of me, but not for the reason you believe. I only possess limited magic that comes to power when I feel threatened in order to protect myself. Therefore, no I was not the reason for the storm…now leave.”

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne

Pets’ Corner |

VETERINARY INPATIENT CARE DURING

“OUT OF HOURS”

I am often asked by my clients how we provide care for their pets when they are kept in overnight. Most general practices who do their own “out of hours”, share this time between the vets and nurses who work in the practice. This means that, every night and weekend, at least one vet and one nurse are available to see emergencies and check and treat any animals that have been kept in. These same members of staff have also got to work the next day, in most cases. Fortunately, there are not many animals that need to be seen “out of hours” and most can be treated and sent home. However, sometimes we have sick animals kept in and these need to be checked at regular intervals to ensure they get the care required. How often they are checked and how long the vet or nurse stays with them depends on how ill the animal is. These are the arrangements that nearly all general practices offer, even if they have somebody living on the premises. Without a separately staffed night and weekend service, it is not possible for somebody to spend the whole time with an inpatient. To provide permanently staffed, twenty-four hour care, seven days a week, would require a minimum of three extra vets and nurses at a cost of at least £200,000 per year, which would have significant effects on the cost of general

veterinary care within practices. Our dedicated staff provide a very good level of care with their regular checks and at a cost that keeps it within the reach of most clients .There are some “out of hours” surgeries in our area, (two in Peterborough and one near Lincoln) that have staff working all night and weekend. Increasingly, general practices are handing their “out of hours” work over to these. There is an advantage that these surgeries are manned all night and weekend but the client has to see staff that they have not seen before, often have to travel further, and they are usually much more expensive than your local vet. Also, these surgeries have to be busy to pay their costs, which means that, even though they are permanently manned, an individual animal can only be checked at intervals between dealing with other cases. It is getting increasingly difficult to recruit vets and veterinary nurses who are willing to do night and weekend work. It is likely that, over time, fewer general practices will provide their own “out of hours” care, and clients will need to attend these “out of hours” surgeries. I would be interested to hear anybody’s views on this matter. This article will be placed on our Facebook page after publication, and I can be e-mailed at comments@aldervetsspalding.co.uk My staff and I are committed to providing our clients with our own “out of hours” care.

Share Skills by Volunteering for Rotary Being part of Rotary is more than just giving back to the community by volunteering. It is also about you bringing your skills, experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive, whilst making some great friends along the way. Our club is a friendly place where you can share common interests, and if you visit us you will immediately feel a sense of camaraderie and fun. Our experience and skills in community work and volunteering place us in an ideal position to work with organisations such as local businesses, charities, universities, schools, hospitals and environmental groups to support a large variety of good causes. These range from helping at food banks, assisting those affected by flooding, fundraising for local causes and organising sports tournaments for disabled youngsters.

Local People, Local Needs Here are some of our events where volunteers have helped us: • Building a school outdoor theatre facility in Bourne. • Installing a kiln at the Bourne Sense Resource Centre for people with sensory impairments and learning disabilities. • Cream tea events to support the St. Barnabas Hospice, Bourne Youth Centre and Mencap.

• Sending “Shelterboxes” to help families overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis

• Daffodil bulb planting on the Bourne bypass to brighten up our town • Installing a pottery kiln for the charity “Sense” at the Bourne Resource Centre to help people with sensory impairments and learning disabilities • Summer picnics in Bourne Woods • Cream tea events in Bourne • We litter pick in Bourne town and surrounding areas • We carry out blood pressure monitoring checks for members of the public in conjunction with the “Stroke Association” • We collect spectacles in Tesco, Bourne and send them to remote African villages where people have poor vision and no access to spectacles • We support our local youth in the Rotary “Young Designer” and “Young Chef “ competitions each year • Club members Angela and Kevan visited India to immunise young children with the polio vaccine • We exhibit, display and support the Bourne Classic Car Show events

• Bourne in Bloom event to support the town’s entry in the ‘Midlands in Bloom’ competition by painting all the town’s planting containers. • Fund raising at the Bourne Christmas Fair and Summer Festival, the Bourne Classic Car Event and supermarket bag packing to support Rotary and local charities.

Getting Involved To find out more about being a volunteer to help your local community, then just visit us on a Tuesday evening, either at the Toft House Hotel, Toft at 7:30pm or any of our social events posted on our Website and Facebook.

With you we could do even more!

How to cure the slice spin

Club face control will help stop you putting slicing spin on the ball. If the face of the club stays pointing to the target after impact, then you are likely to put slice spin on the ball. A quick thought and drill to help prevent this from happening is to train the elbow of the leading arm to point down, and the palm of the leading hand point upwards soon after impact. (The leading hand being the left for a righthanded golfer.) If you take a golf club now and make a few small swings and ensure the “elbow down-palm up” scenario, you will notice how the face of the club starts pointing away from the target soon after impact (left of target for a right-handed golfer), thus meaning the ball will not have slice spin on it. Please note - there is always an underlying fault that causes a sliced shot. This drill is designed to show you how to release the club through impact correctly, thus reducing any spin imparted on the ball. If you have a slice shot that you want to remove from your game, then you really need to come for a lesson and see why you slice your shots. If you would like a tip about a specific area of your own game, then you could send me it, with a picture or short video clip if you like, to twitter @BOURNEGolf and I will reply to you with your tip or drill. I hope this tip helps you to improve your game. Golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you improve and enjoy your golf more. You can make arrangements by calling me by telephone 01778 395992, text 07827 293679 or email darren@bournegolfstudio.com
