Von Beginn an widmen sich die Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik der Pflege der Renaissance- und Barockmusik, manchmal auch der Wiener Klassik. Im Zentrum stehen Barockopern, darüber hinaus gibt es Konzerte an historischen Stätten mit Musik vom Mittelalter bis ins frühe 19. Jahrhundert. Oberste Maxime des Festivals ist: Originalklang, also die Aufführung der Musik in einer entsprechenden Klanggebung auf Instrumenten damaliger Bauweisen und mit den Erkenntnissen aus der n in Traktaten überlieferten historischen Aufführungspraxis.

IN THE RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE ERAS GREAT MASTERS SUCH AS PAUL HOFHAIMER, HEINRICH ISAAC AND PIETRO ANTONIO CESTI WERE EMPLOYED AS MUSICIANS AT THE HABSBURG COURT AMIDST THE ALPINE SCENERY OF TIROL.

Magnificent opera was performed at the first theatrehouse in German-speaking Europe. The instrumental ensemble in Innsbruck at the time later went on to form the famous pre-Classical Mannheim orchestra. The mid-twentieth century saw a revival of this tradition and Early Music was once again performed in magnificent halls and churches. In the year 1963, to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Tyrolean apartenage to Austria, the Innsbruck musician Prof. Otto Ulf

(1907 - 1993) presented the first Ambras Castle Concert and every August since 1976 Innsbruck with its Festwochen has been a mecca for Early Music fans. Famous conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, John Eliot Gardiner and Alan Curtis have performed here, opera stars such as Jennifer Larmore and the counter-tenor Derek Lee Ragin have enthralled audiences, musicians such as Jordi Savall and Sigiswald Kuijken have given spellbinding concerts in Innsbruck. n

ür den Winter 2023/24 wurde die Oper „Schneeflöckchen“ von Rimski-Korsakow als Opernjuwel ausgewählt. Dieses wunderschöne und zugleich grausame Märchen wird die Zuhörer*innen mit zu Herzen gehenden Arien in den musikalischen Bann ziehen. Den Taktstock hält Maestro Dmitry Liss fest in der Hand. Die zweite Oper der Winterfestspiele ist „Le Postillon de Lonjumeau“, eine Wieder-

entdeckung des Intendanten Bernd Loebe. Nach der Premiere im Dezember 2021 und den großartigen Medienberichten steigerte sich der Gästezuspruch so enorm, dass die Oper in diesem Winter wieder aufgenommen wird. Unter der Leitung des Kapellmeisters der Festspiele, Beomseok Yi, wird sich Pietro Adaini als Postillon Chapelou zur gesanglichen Bestleistung n des hohen D aufschwingen.

chon früh begann der dreifache Weltmeister und zweifache Weltcup-Gesamtsieger mit dem Skifahren und brachte es schließlich in seiner 17-jährigen Karriere auf 150 Siege.

Rückblickend steht der legendäre Sportler auf dem Standpunkt, dass das Allerwichtigste in der Karriere gewesen sei, dass er sich nie richtig verletzt habe. Meistens waren ja die Pisten nur bei den Rennen gut präpariert, Sicherheitsnetze gab es überhaupt nicht. Er freue sich also sehr, dass er nun auch im Alter „ gut beisammen sei“. Schon als Jugendlicher musste er einiges an Schicksalsschlägen hinnehmen: Sein Elternhaus brannte ab, der Vater verstarb sehr früh, vielleicht hat es alles aber auch seinen stets eigenständigen Stil geprägt. Schon in jungen Jahren wurde er als Nachfolger des dreifachen Olympiasiegers Toni Sailer gehandelt, trainierte verbissen im Nationalteam, war hart zu sich selbst und scheute keine Konfrontation. Auch im kreativen Bereich war er immer an der Spitze,

er liebte den Windkanal, propagierte ab 1966 einen einteiligen Rennanzug und kämpfte auf den letzten Metern vor dem Ziel mit der legendären „Schranz Hocke“ um Sekundenbruchteile. Prägend für die Biographie des Ski-Idols wurde Olympia 1972 in Sapporo. Er kam als Abfahrts-Favorite nach Japan, wurde aber von den Spielen ausgeschlossen. Begründet wurde dies mit einem Foto, auf dem Schranz mit dem Logo eines Kaffeerösters bei einem Fußballspiel zu sehen war. Für das olympische Komitee ein Indiz, dass Schranz schwer gegen den sogenannten „Amateur-Paragraphen“ verstoßen habe. Ganz Österreich war wegen des augenscheinlichen Unrechts empört und mehr als 100.000 Menschen bereiteten dem verhinderten Olympioniken einen triumphalen Empfang in Wien. Die Bilder vom Balkon des Bundeskanzler-Amtes gingen um die Welt. Schranz beendete seine aktive Rennkarriere, blieb jedoch dem Skisport stets verbunden und brachte auch die alpine Skiweltmeisterschaft in seinen Heimatort St.Anton am Arlberg. Auch heute noch hat Skifahren für die Skilegende einen hohen Stellenwert und er freut sich schon darauf, mit seiner kleinen Enkelin die n ersten Skiversuche starten zu können.

MADE LEGENDARY BY A RACE IN WHICH HE NEVER COMPETED THE SQUAT STANCE WAS THE TRADEMARK OF THIS ERSTWHILE SKI RACER, ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TO EMERGE FROM THE AUSTRIAN SKI FEDERATION.

he three-time world champion and two-time overall World Cup winner began skiing at an early age and ultimately realized 150 victories in his 17-year career.

Looking back, the legendary athlete believes that the most important factor in his career was that he never really got injured. In most cases, the slopes were only well-groomed during the races, and there were no safety nets whatsoever. In light of this, he is extremely happy to be “in good shape” even in his later years. He had to endure a number of misfortunes as a young man: His parents’ house burned down, his father died at a very early age, although ultimately, it may all have contributed to his consistently independent style. Even at a young age, he was considered the successor to threetime Olympic champion Toni Sailer, training fiercely in the national team, and being tough on himself and not afraid of conflict. Creatively, he was always at the cutting edge. He loved the wind tunnel, advocated for a one-piece racing suit back

in 1966, and used the legendary “Schranz squat” to battle for fractions of a second in the last few meters before the finish line. The 1972 Olympics in Sapporo had a formative influence on the life of the ski idol. He arrived in Japan as a Downhill favorite, but was banned from the Games. This was motivated by a photo showing Schranz with the logo of a coffee roaster at a soccer match. The Olympic Committee considered this to be evidence that Schranz had seriously violated the so-called “amateur clause.” The apparent injustice outraged the entire country, and more than 100,000 people gathered in Vienna to give the prevented Olympian a triumphant reception. The images from the balcony of the Chancellor’s office were seen around the world. Schranz ended his active racing career, but always remained associated with skiing and even brought the Alpine World Ski Championships to his hometown of St. Anton am Arlberg. To this day, skiing still has a high priority for the legendary skier, and he is looking forward to accompanying his little granddaughter in n her first attempts at skiing.

ontblanc gehört zu den bekanntesten Marken für Füllfederhalter. Alles begann 1906, als der Ingenieur August Eberstein – inspiriert durch einen Aufenthalt in den USA – anfing, in Berlin Füllfederhalter zu produzieren. Michael Moosbrugger, der 1996 die Verantwortung für das Traditionshaus übernommen hat, erzählt, dass die klösterliche Tradition auch heute noch einen Einfluss auf die Betriebsführung ausübt. Nicht nur, dass man gemeinsam nach der Ernte das Einbringen der Ernte mit einer Segnung und dem traditionellen Martinigansel feiert, sondern dass der Geist der Zisterzienser in vielen Entscheidungen ein wichtiges Leitmotiv bietet. The cultural Heritage of Austrian Wine

One of Austria’s oldest and richest-in-tradition wine estates will celebrate its 850th vintage with the 2020 harvest. The history of Schloss Gobelsburg is closely interwoven with that of the Cistercian Order, which spread from Burgundy throughout all of Europe and arrived at the Danube in the twelfth century. In the year 1171, the monks of Zwettl Abbey obtained a farmyard at the foot of the famous vineyard Ried HEILIGENSTEIN near Langenlois. That year saw the cornerstone laid for a tradition that would then grow and flourish over hundreds of years.

he Renaissance chateau with its baroque accretions nestles picturesquely into the gentle terraced vineyards of the Danube River Valley. When travelling from Vienna and coming upon the first vineyards at Fels am Wagram, the attentive visitor will notice hilly landscapes moulded from a soil called loess, in which the flagship grape variety of Austria – Grüner Veltliner – is cultivated predominantly. Approaching the estate, the impressive terraced vineyards of Ried HEILIGENSTEIN arise on the right, its expression best characterised by the Riesling that grows there. Historians are keenly aware of the significance of this vineyard site, which is not only unique in Europe for its geologic makeup, but also occupies a historically pre-eminent position in Austria’s viticultural landscape. Arriving at Gobelsburg, visitors are immediately aware of the eye-catching ensemble constellation, which reaches back through history to pre-Celtic habitation some 4,000 years ago. Entering the inner courtyard, one is immediately embraced by a sense of security. A sundial shows that even in modern times, the Cistercian leitmotif of ‘simplicity & strictness’ most definitely retains its relevance. The door to the wine cellar creaks open, and automatically upon entering one breathes the characteristic & familiar cellar aroma that remains so difficult to describe. The visitor proceeds

onward through corridors hundreds of years old, past wine in barrels & bottles, until arriving at the core of the cellar facilities – a cloister whose centre serves as a fountain of light, air and water. Michael Moosbrugger, who took over management of this traditional house in 1996, tells us that the monastic ways still exert their influence on operational matters today. Not only that folks celebrate the yield of the harvest together after picking, and feast on the traditional Sankt Martin’s Day goose, but also that the spirit of the Cistercians remains an important influence on many decisions. And at the wine tasting in these historic chambers, one begins by becoming acquainted with the classic wines of the Danube Valley – Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein (village wine) and Riedenwein (harvested from individual vineyards) serve as points of focus for the estate. There is also a series of specialties that demands attention as well. The fine red wines of the Pinot family, or the sweet wines – but their classy sparkling wines (Sekt) are now also numbered among the best that Austria has to offer. And then the subject ‘Maturity in Wine’ receives special attention in the line of wines known as TRADITION.
