He first began experimenting in his grandmother's darkroom and went on to become a passionate artist, with the air of a storyteller surrounded by a hint of the monarchy.

nown as a master of detailed depictions, Robert Sackl-Kahr Sagostin seems to have come from a bygone era, a modern-day Oscar Wilde, as it were. His work flourishes, immersed as he is in the environment of a creative family. He lives with his wife – herself a concert pianist – in a household that embraces the arts. He is currently exhibiting with Andreas Lendl at the Haus der Kunst: “The exhibition at the Haus der Kunst will feature photographs taken over the past few years. Places where I spent the most time – Paris, my wife’s hometown – and Trieste and Venice,” says the artist, who has studios in Graz, Paris, and Marrakech. hibited in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the US. A sense of restlessness has impelled the native of Graz to travel around the globe. He spent much of his youth with his grandmother in Trieste, where he discovered the magic of photography at a very early age. Even as a preschooler in his grandmother’s studio, he had the opportunity try out a whole host of different cameras and experiment in the darkroom. He discovered his love for Polaroid photography years later when he founded his own studio in Marrakech after completing studies in Milan, Parma, and Venice. “In my work with photographic portraits, I was influenced by the slow and meticulous creative process that characterizes Lucian Freud’s paintings,” confides the Styrian artist. For the past 40 years, Sackl-Kahr’s work has been crowned with medals, prizes, and awards, including the one of the first Polaroid Awards. n
