YACHTING guide Bornholm

Welcome to Bornholm Experience the yachters’ paradise Bornholm and its 140 km coastline that is never further away than a day of sailing, regardless of whether you are coming from Sweden, Germany or Poland or another location in Denmark. Experience the picturesque rocky coasts of northern Bornholm and the miles of silvery sandy beaches of southern Bornholm. Enjoy a brilliant concoction of unique urban harbours, idyllic fishing hamlets and harbours nestled in magnificent natural settings. When Bornholm comes into view, you feel an unusual breeze coming from the rocky island: the rush of history. Because as you approach Bornholm by sea, you are cresting the same waves that Vikings, pirates, crusaders and trading ships have been cresting for more than 1,000 years. Throughout its history, Bornholm has hosted colourful legendary visitors, both welcome and uninvited, and evidence of their visits are found all over the island. Castles and strongholds were necessary because Bornholm has always been a key target for the powers that be in the Baltic Sea Region. As you enter Hammerhavn Harbour, Hammershus towers high above you. This is the largest castle ruin in northern Europe, and back when the castle was newly completed and intact, it was used for assembling large armies that set out on crusades in the then pagan Baltic States. As you enter Gudhjem harbour, you are calling at a port that was also home to Vikings. Today, Gudhjem is one of the areas of Denmark’s with the richest finds of Viking settlements. Viking treasures are still being unearthed on the island, as are artefacts from heavily loaded trading ships. Bornholm’s most characteristic harbours are those blasted out of rock and nestled in a unique village graced by white smokehouse chimneys where the sea’s “silver” (herring) is smoked into the renowned “Gold of Bornholm”. Yet Bornholm also boasts fully equipped modern marinas, commercial fishing harbours and unique “offshore harbours”. Bornholm abounds with quiet coves complete with sandy beaches – beautiful for riding at anchor. Or vertical cliffs in natural harbours and coves where you are moored to a rock as your barbecue grill sends wafts of savoury smoke skyward. No trip to Bornholm would be complete without a side trip to the Ertholmene archipelago, roughly 10 nautical miles north-east of Bornholm. The natural harbour separating the islands Christiansø and Frederiksø is part of the world’s first naval base. It was founded to help protect Denmark against the Swedish fleet. Today, the islands comprise one of the most unique, beautiful and well-preserved communities in Europe where the some 100 inhabitants contribute to a must-have experience that defies explanation. The island’s inland areas abound with unique experiences, too, with countless sights of interest and a wide array of craft artists scattered all over the island. Bornholm has also become a gourmet island and is world-renowned for local specialities, which visiting yachters can enjoy. From rocky landscapes and coasts in the north to beaches in the south, it is always possible to find memorable experiences for children and adults alike. This is true no matter what the weather, but having more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Denmark is Bornholm’s extra asset. The harbour can be entered day and night, but not in hard north-westerly winds. If you are in the middle basin, the harbour is safe during all wind conditions, however. The harbour has 3 basins. The 2 southernmost always have space for visiting yachters. A barbecue shed for use by visiting yachters is located near the harbour’s toilet and bathing facilities. The “Bixen” harbour kiosk is open in the summer. Vang was originally a fishing hamlet and until a few years ago also served as a shipping port for granite quarried in the Ringebakker hills until a few years ago. “Vang Pier”, south of the town, is a prominent memorial to the granite quarrying of the modern era. Today it also includes a small sandy beach and diving boards. Details about the area’s granite quarrying and production are posted in a small thatched building on the waterfront. The streets of the village wind their way picturesquely up the steep coastal slope. Vang’s unique peaceful atmosphere, scenic splendour and fine eateries – not to mention trails leading from the fishing hamlet to wildlife areas such as Slotslyngen and Ringebakker – the latter

with many abandoned quarries – make this harbour definitely worth a visit. Other sights of interest nearby include Bornholm’s only preserved watermill with an overshot waterwheel, as well as artist Peter Bonnén’s bridge across the ravine at the quarry south of the harbour. A gallery and sculpture park are found along the waterfront. Five hundred metres north of the harbour is the highest waterfall in Denmark: Pissebækken (“Pee Brook”), which is not always waterbearing in the long, sunny Bornholm summers, however.

More than DKK 25 million has been invested in this port, formerly used for the embarkation of granite quarried nearby, and nestled in a magnificent scenic setting at the foot of the Hammershus Castle Ruin. The investment has resulted in beautiful granite edging, brand-new service facilities, a café and interesting signboards telling the history of when the granite quarrying industry employed more than 300 people at the harbour. Visiting yachters are welcome in the outer basin and at vacant berths in the inner harbour. Hammer Harbour has no village activities or modern service facilities on offer, but is a beautifully situated harbour in scenic surroundings. The harbour is an ideal point of departure for hikes through the Slotslyngen or Hammerknuden nature areas. Regardless of whether you wish to immerse yourself in nature, the abandoned quarries, or the riveting history of the largest castle ruins in Northern Europe, this site is unique in many ways. If you like guided angling trips at sea, then book your place on the local trolling/jigging boat for an unforgettable angling experience. Hammerhavnen Harbour is a fine base for unique skin-diving experiences, like exploring the biggest accessible wrecks in northern Europe, or the caves of Hammerknuden Peninsula where skin-divers can explore deep under the peninsula. The harbour has also become a base for outdoor activities where the undertaking Go Bornholm provides a wide programme of experiences. The island’s biggest music festival “Wonderfestiwall” is held over several days in August and is within walking distance from the harbour. A few hundred metres from the harbour is Bornholm’s largest lake, Hammersøen, featuring a barbecue shelter and an observation dock. A genuine “Bornholm harbour”, i.e., it was blasted out of the rocks, and the chunks of granite this created were used to construct the solid harbour structures and surfaces. The port has truly become nationally famous by virtue of the large National Political Festival (Folkemødet) which had more than 100,000 participants in 2015. The port is situated at the centre of the town centre and wreathed by an interesting urban environment featuring fine shops and restaurants right on the quay, including a wide selection of seafood. The town’s tourist information office has been relocated to the waterfront and is delighted to serve port visitors in the interesting setting around the harbour basin. The area also features a new footpath leading to Hammershus, a large rock-carving site and much more besides, as described in “Sporet ved Folkemødet” (the Trail near the National Festival). The café atmosphere spreads all the way down to the quay and peaks during week 28 at the summer’s jazz festival. The town also features

a unique music venue, “Gæsten”, with outdoor events and many big names every day in peak season. A local boiled sweets business shows how boiled sweets are made, and craft artists proudly display the results of their work. Visitors are welcome throughout the harbour, which is so popular that in peak season it is possible to walk across the decks of visiting yachts in harbour’s inner basin, in spite of the modest number of native boats. The port has new bathing and toilet facilities, and a self-service information point with always up-to-date weather forecasts, and the codes you need for for bathing, toilet and Wi-Fi. From 1 October to 1 May, the gate opens and closes on weekdays only during normal working hours. The port can be entered day and night, whenever the black sphere is raised or the three vertically aligned red lights are not shining. If they are illuminated, the port is closed. The line of seaward approach is found by two green lights, as well as a fore and aft beacon showing the port’s safe entrance direction.

Christiansø

Christiansø · 3760 Gudhjem

Christiansø Island is so unique that it defies brief description but should most definitely be included in any Bornholm yachting holiday. Christiansø and Frederiksø islands form a complete community with around 100 inhabitants, living on either side of the natural harbour formed between Christiansø and Frederiksø: there is an inn, a church, police station, grocery shop with a bakery, post office, museum, galleries, a community centre and a shop where the renowned Christiansø marinated herring are produced and sold. The island is self-sufficient in electricity and has its own water supply which for centuries has come from rainwater collected in open wells. In recent years, however, the supply has been supplemented with drilled wells and water conveyed to the island from Bornholm. Everything on both islands is housed in buildings listed on the historic register, as the islands previously formed a large fortification. The archipelago is also home to the Græsholmen bird sanctuary where Baltic “penguins” are found. In recent years, the seal population has rocketed on the westernmost skerry “Tat”, which now has so many 300-kg grey seals that if a newly arriving seal squeezes itself up onto the rock, this causes another seal to fall into the water. The harbour has two approaches, one on either side of the swing bridge, separating the harbour basin into south and north harbours. Visiting yachters are welcome in both, but only a few berths are available in the north harbour. The harbour can be entered day and night and always one or other of the approaches will not have the wind against you. Strong winds blowing

directly into the entrances create some turbulence in the harbour. If the harbour cannot be entered, a black sphere is raised and three red lights are switched on. The island’s unique atmosphere does not really start until the first 5 pm gathering at the inn, to celebrate that fact that all the “threehour tourists” have left the islands for the day. A visit to the islands in your own boat is an unforgettable experience. Someone must have had yachters in mind when the this natural harbour was created between the two islands surrounded by 100-metre-deep waters, 10 nautical miles from Bornholm – reminiscent of Utklippan, located 10 nautical miles from Karlskrona, Sweden. And to top it off, the Ertholmene archipelago are the only islands between Bornholm and Karlskrona’s skerry-filled coastal waters.

The Port of Nexø welcomes all visiting yachters in the five northernmost basins featuring brand-new facilities, including two trolling ramps, a coin-operated laundry, barbecue grill and smoking oven, free Wi-Fi and low-cost accommodation. The port area’s location adjacent to the centre of Nexø, surrounded by restaurants, shops, museums and craft art, forms a splendid setting where 2,870 metres of quayside provide plenty of space for visiting yachts of all shapes and sizes. The three northernmost basins, along with the old dry dock where the barque “Svaneke” is being reconstructed, comprise the only major harbour in Denmark made of sandstone, which is the type of bedrock out of which the harbour was blasted. The Port of Nexø is Bornholm’s largest commercial fishery harbour, and offers the option of a trip on a local jig-fishing boat. In summer, there is a passenger-ferry service to Poland, and a week of jazz throughout the town. Nexø also offers a wide selection of daily commodity and speciality shops, an active herring smokehouse and a boat-equipment business. There are interesting sites to see in the vicinity of the harbour, such as the splendid Stenbrud quarry lake, stocked with fish for angling, and just north of the quarry it is possible to stand Excursions: Nexø Museum 500 m Martin Andersen Nexøs Mindestuer 500 m Sommerfugleparken 1 km Stenbrudssøen 1 km Halleklipperne 3 km Balka 4 km, Golf 10 km Færge til Kolobrzeg
