Mission Northeast Annual Luncheon Another Great Success by Pam Dickson The Community Room at Randall Reed Stadium was packed with Mission Northeast supporters and friends, celebrating another great year of helping the needy in our community. All proceeds from the successful event will go directly toward the many free programs and services provided by Mission Northeast. Onyx Services was the Presenting Sponsor. VIP Sponsors were Insperity (in Appreciation of Montgomery County First Responders), East Montgomery County Improvement District, and Entergy. Mission Stars were Jack and Nancy Barnes, Lone Star College Kingwood, Jean Wallace, and Woodforest National Bank. The many other table sponsors were “Mission Friends”. Pam Dickson, Executive Director, welcomed and thanked attendees and auction donors. It wouldn’t be a Mission luncheon without a fabulous meal catered by Amedeo’s. Our favorite restaurateur, Tony Raffa, thanked the crowd for their longtime support of Amedeo’s and Raffa’s, as well as Mission Northeast. Everyone’s favorite emcee Mark Linabury was exceptional as always. And it was a special treat for Mark to be joined by Entergy’s “singing auctioneer” Brian Garcia, raising over $22,000 in the live auction. Special thanks to Tyler Jones for being the luncheon photographer. A popular feature of every luncheon is to hear success stories from individuals Mission Northeast has helped. Community support is vital to Mission Northeast, and that was brought home by speakers Teresa Perkins with Insperity and Brian Garcia with Entergy. Special awards were presented to outstanding Community Partners Jackie Rathgeber and Entergy. In addition to providing food, clothing and household items, Mission Northeast is committed to providing adult education (including ESL) and job training, to help individuals become self-sufficient and to build stronger families and community. Nonperishable food items are at an all-time low when need is at an all-time high. Please consider helping Mission Northeast by holding a food drive or donating monetarily through their website at www.missionne.org, or mailing a check to P. O. Box 1207; New Caney, TX 77357. Your donations are tax exempt. Mission Northeast is thankful to our generous community for over 28 years of support. Happy Holidays!

Financial Power of Attorney (POA) I almost always recommend having a power of attorney in place. While it is critical in your later years to have a financial POA, it does not hurt to have one in place at any time during adulthood if you own any assets (bank accounts, homes, cars, etc.), no matter how small. Purpose and Benefit: The purpose of a financial POA is to allow your appointed agent to help manage your financial affairs if you become unable to manage them yourself, whether due to cognitive decline or an unexpected accident or major medical event. Financial POAs allow your agent to assist with a broad variety of your affairs, including your bank accounts, real estate, bills, insurance, taxes, and other matters. If you do not have a valid financial POA in place and you lose your mental capacity to make financial and legal decisions for yourself, your loved ones may be forced to seek guardianship over your estate, which is an expensive, time-consuming, and often emotionally draining process. Risks: Having worked for a large financial institution for many years, I saw my fair share of suspected exploitation of elderly and vulnerable clients and in our industry at large. Sometimes that exploitation was by a stranger (e.g., romance scam, IRS scams, etc.); however, often the exploitation was by a family member or friend acting under a POA. While your agent is required by law to only act in your best interests, it is possible for an agent to misappropriate or improperly use your money or assets. That is why it is imperative to appoint an agent who you strongly believe (based on their character and past behavior) will act solely in your best interests.
Page 8 - forestimage.com
Options to Consider for your Financial POA: • Springing or Immediate Power? It is very tempting to have your agent act for you only if you become mentally incapacitated (i.e., a springing POA). While I understand that desire, I have two basic thoughts about that: (1) If you don’t trust your agent to not exercise their rights under the POA while you have capacity, do you really trust them to manage your financial affairs if you become incapacitated? and (2) If you are slowly losing your mental alertness and your agent wants to start helping you, or, if you have dementia but your family can’t get you to cooperate in visiting a doctor to obtain an official diagnosis, your agent cannot act under that springing POA until they can obtain a statement from a medical doctor indicating you can no longer manage your financial affairs. This can create a barrier and/or delay in helping you. • Sole or Co-Agents? In most situations, I STRONGLY recommend only naming one agent to serve at a time. If you name co-agents and they disagree with each other, you could find yourself in a situation of competing actions by the different agents and/or third parties refusing to honor a request by either agent. It is best to pick the person who is most trustworthy and most likely to help you when needed. Appoint the other person(s) as a back-up agent. • Gifting and other extra powers? In your financial POA, you can give your agent what we call “hot powers”, which can include the power to change your beneficiary designations or rights of survivorship on financial accounts and to make gifts of your property to the agent and/or others. The decision to give such powers is always best analyzed based on your needs in comparison with the additional risk such powers pose. Fear of the Dentist About a third of the population is afraid of going to the dentist. Dental fear is well known and is often the subject of cartoonists and sitcoms, but is certainly no joke for the people who experience it. Of the frequently cited top ten most common fears, fear of needles, or “trypanophobia”, is number ten. Even basic dental exams and tooth cleanings become a unpleasant chore for people who have dental anxiety, but in many cases dental fear can be a complete blockade that prevents people from going to the dentist altogether. When patients notice tooth sensitivity, dental pain, or bleeding gums, often there is a diagnosis made that necessitates dental treatment to fix the problem and avoid tooth loss. In most cases, this dental treatment could have been prevented with twice-yearly dental care including exams and cleanings. By the time we wait for something in our mouth to bother us, there is almost surely a cost and a procedure to endure. The problems in our mouth are always the cheapest and easiest to fix when we address them before they start to cause symptoms. Addressing dental anxiety and getting ourselves into the dentist for twice-yearly exams and cleanings keeps our mouth healthy. Our office offers a wide variety of sedation options for patients with anxiety, even for basic tooth cleaning appointments when requested. Intravenous or IV sedation is started at the beginning of procedure appointments and gives patient the sense that they close their eyes and then open their eyes again to realize the appointment is over without remembering any part of the treatment. Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is an option for patients who want light anxiety Page - forestimage.com Forest12 Magazine_Sep2023 Final.indd 10
relief for a quick appointment. Oral sedation is in the form of various pills that patients take prior to their appointment and offers a feeling of being sleepy and being less aware of the appointment, resulting in anxiety control. Once patients have a few good experiences in the dental office under the appropriate sedation, oftentimes patients are able to get regular dental exams and cleanings with no sedation at all and return to a normal pattern of caring for their mouths in a preventive manner. Feel free to give our office a call and let us help you beat your dental anxiety.

‘Fall’ In Love with Family-Favorite Autumn Recipes by Family Features
Watermelon Flesh In the fall, whole watermelon is still available in many areas. You can also find mini watermelon in the fresh cut produce section at many local grocers. The flesh is often the favorite (and most-used) part of the watermelon. Served on its own as a hydrating snack or as part of a recipe for tasty entrees, the flesh offers something for nearly every appetite so no watermelon goes to waste.
With temperatures cooling and cravings leaning toward comforting flavors, fall offers a perfect time for families to explore adventurous twists on favorite foods. As you and your loved ones rework the menu for autumn, turn to versatile ingredients that provide fresh tastes and new ways to enjoy classic recipes. One star ingredient that can be used for appetizers, main courses, sides, snacks and desserts alike is watermelon. Houston Methodist The Woodlands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Earns Gold-level Beacon Award
The Woodlands, TX. – Oct. 10, 2023
Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) recently earned a Gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). Houston Methodist The Woodlands is the only NICU unit in Texas to receive this gold designation. The Beacon Award for Excellence — a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments — recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes. Units that achieve this three-year designation meet national criteria consistent with the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award. “It is an honor for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to receive this national recognition,” said Kerrie Guerrero, DNP, MBA, RN, NE-BC, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. “It demonstrates our commitment to providing unparalleled care to our smallest patients and their families.” The Houston Methodist The Woodlands NICU now joins the hospital’s adult ICU, which also achieved the three-year Gold-Level Beacon Award for Excellence in 2021. “The Gold Beacon recognizes nursing excellence at the unit level and showcases our nurses’ daily commitment to their patients,” Guerrero said. “I could not be more grateful to both of these teams for all that they do for our patients and in the community.” Houston Methodist The Woodlands Neonatal ICU Manager Christy Adams, MSN, RN, RNC-NIC, sympathizes that no family plans to spend time in the NICU, but is proud to offer nationally recognized excellence in patient outcomes. “Being the only Gold-level Beacon recipient in Texas demonstrates to our patients that their babies can receive unparalleled quality care that is family focused,” Adams said. “This designation truly is a testament to what the NICU team does every day, putting the patient at the front of everything we do, and exhibiting our commitment to leading medicine.” AACN President Terry Davis, PhD, RN, NE-BC, CHTP, FAAN, applauds the exemplary efforts of the caregivers at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence. “These dedicated healthcare professionals join other members of the exceptional community of nurses who set the standard for optimal patient care,” Davis said. “The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in stellar units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes. Units that receive this national recognition serve as role models to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care.” The gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence signifies an effective and systematic approach to policies, procedures and processes that include engagement of staff and key stakeholders; fact-based evaluation strategies for continuous process improvement; and performance measures that meet or exceed relevant benchmarks. Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital earned a gold award by meeting the following evidencebased Beacon Award for Excellence criteria: • Leadership Structures and Systems • Appropriate Staffing and Staff Engagement • Effective Communication, Knowledge Management, and Learning and Development • Evidence-Based Practice and Processes • Outcome Measurement

The Village Centers Enchanted Forest Gala
Presented by the Jerry C. Dearing Family Foundation The Village Centers Enchanted Forest Gala, presented by The Jerry C. Dearing Family Foundation, unfolded like a scene from a fairy tale on Saturday, October 7th at the Houston CityPlace Marriott at Springwoods Village. The event opened with a captivating cocktail hour that featured a scenic view and the opportunity to bid on an impressive array of silent auction items. Inside the ballroom, tables adorned with moss-covered centerpieces, blooming flowers, and sparkling candlelight surrounded guests as they enjoyed a delicious 3-course dinner that concluded with decadent chocolate mousse cups and dulce de leche cheesecakes for dessert. The true “enchantment” of the evening was the lively gathering of so many people committed to supporting the mission of The Village Centers and helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year’s gala honored local community and business leaders Pat & Ray Guard, loyal supporters of The Village Centers who have been instrumental in the growth of the Kingwood community. In light of the Guard’s recent health challenges, the Village continued to honor the Guard’s devotion to serving the Lake Houston community. The organization’s goal for the Enchanted Forest Gala was to fill the room with members of the community who have been positively impacted by Pat and Ray’s kindness. The Guards were honored with a touching tribute video featuring testimonials and personal stories from close friends and members of the Kingwood community.

Emcee for the event was President & CEO of the Greater East Montgomery Chamber of Commerce Mark Linabury. Mark is a passionate advocate for supporting local businesses and non-profit organizations and made for the perfect emcee for the evening, dazzling attendees with his charm and quick-witted personality. The gala guests also enjoyed cowboy auctioneer Nick Hinze and his “Wrangler” assistants who guided the Live Auction and Fund-a-Need. Following the program, attendees danced the night away to the bewitching melodies of Flight of the Keys, the 5-piece live band for the evening. Contributions made during the gala combined with sponsorship and ticket sales raised more than $150,000 to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The evening would not have been possible without the support and dedication of the 2023 Gala Co-Chairs: Kim & Greg Fazzino, Joan & Ralph Imperato, and Layna & Mike Netek and the 2023 Gala Committee: Jeanette Brown, Danielle Deleon, Roxanne Deleon, Kathie Gentry, Marie Halvatzis, Arlene Martinez, Kelly Paull, Michelle Sorrentino, Lisa Turner, and Michelle Zuniga. The Village Centers would like to thank event sponsors, auction donors, volunteers, staff, and everyone who played an integral role in making the Enchanted Forest Gala a success!

In view of the current horrific violence in Israel, the Holocaust Rememberance Association urges you to take a personal stand on behalf of people everywhere who are suffering through acts of war, terrorism, and hatred. We need to gather our strength and move forward with renewed determination to educate the public about antisemitism. As Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks affirmed, “anti-Semitism may start with the Jews, but it never ends with the Jews.” I urge you to demonstrate solidarity with the Jewish community wherever you live and offer your support and advocacy. How can we have hope for our own nation if we stand by silently and fail to lift our voices when Israel’s people and borders are so grossly violated? You are invited to join the Grand Opening of the Holocaust Garden of Hope on Sunday, November 5, 2023 located at 1660 W. Lake Houston Parkway, Kingwood, TX 77345.
