Financial Abuse of the Elderly

Background and Statistics – Elder abuse is comprised of 5 categories: caregiver neglect, financial fraud and exploitation, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and physical abuse. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, at least 10% of elderly adults (age 65 and older) will experience some form of elder abuse one form of abuse. Other studies suggest that at least 20% of elderly adults have been victimized by financial fraud and exploitation at some point in time. This article largely focuses on financial exploitation and fraud.

Financial Abuse

wrongful taking, appropriation, obtaining, retention, or use of money or other property of another person or trust with the other person. intimidation, misrepresentation, or the exerting of undue influence. Examples include (1) the misuse of a durable (financial) power of attorney that results in the unauthorized taking, sale or transfer of another person’s property, (2) the unauthorized taking, use or transfer of another’s personal assets or money from a personal or joint account, and (3) the knowing or intentional failure to effectively use another person’s income and assets for the necessities required for the person’s support and maintenance.

I think of financial fraud by strangers, often through romance scams (typically online through dating websites or social media), sweepstakes/lottery scams (telling a person they have won a sweepstakes or lottery but must pay the taxes upfront), and other types of scams.

Prevention – The best way to prevent financial abuse of yourself or an elderly loved one is two-fold: staying involved guardrails in place to ensure there are trustworthy persons who can help or handle the financial affairs of an elderly person if/when it becomes necessary, like executing a financial power of attorney or setting up a trust as well as designating an authorized or trusted contact with the elderly person’s financial advisor or bank so that financial institutions can reach out to the trusted contact if they become concerned about actions being requested or taken by an elderly person.

Studies have shown that the average time between the first symptoms of cognitive impairment in an elderly person and when a diagnosis of dementia occurs is 2.8 years. This is often when elderly persons are most vulnerable. Staying involved with your loved ones can help protect them from strangers as well as other “trusted” persons who may try to take advantage of them.

Addressing financial abuse – It will likely depend on the facts and circumstances of the situation. You can report suspected financial abuse to Texas’ Adult Protective Services at 1-800-252-5400, online at www. TxAbuseHotline.org, or even local police. It may also be helpful to talk to an elder law attorney to find out if a guardianship or other legal action is necessary. If you are already the appointed agent via a financial power of attorney for the elderly person, you may need to take action to restrict financial accounts and/or move assets to a new or more secure account or location.

Celebrating July 4th: A Heartfelft American Tradition C

an you feel the excitement in the air? That’s right, the Fourth of July is just around the corner, and it’s time to celebrate America’s birthday! This special day is all about fireworks, barbecues, and coming together as a community. But beyond the fun and festivities, it’s a chance to reflect on our history and the journey that brought us here. Let’s dive into the background, history, some fun facts, and how we love to celebrate Independence Day.

On July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress voted for independence. Just two days later, on July 4, they adopted the Declaration of Independence. This historic document, mostly written by Thomas Jefferson, announced that the colonies were breaking away from Britain to form a new nation.

Fifty-six delegates signed the Declaration, including well-known names like John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams. This document declared that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It marked the birth of a nation and set the stage for the freedoms we cherish today.

While we’re having fun, it’s also important to remember what the Fourth of July stands for. It’s a chance to honor the brave people who fought for our independence. As the fireworks light up the sky and we gather with our loved ones, let’s remember the journey that got us here and look forward to a future full of promise and hope.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Enjoy the celebrations, cherish the moments, and let’s keep striving to make our country the best it can be.

4th of July Facts

Early Celebrations: Believe it or not, the first Independence Day celebrations were held way back in 1777. These early festivities had parades, concerts, and yes, fireworks – much like today!

The Fireworks Tradition: Speaking of fireworks, did you know they were part of the plan from the start? John Adams, one of the founding fathers, envisioned a grand celebration with “pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations.”

Federal Holiday Status: July 4th became a federal holiday in 1870, and it wasn’t until 1941 that it became a paid holiday for federal employees.

Liberty Bell: Every year on July 4th, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped 13 times – one for each of the original 13 colonies.

Oldest Parade: The Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the U.S., dating back to 1785.

Enjoy a Fruit-Infused Fourth of July

As patriotic parties roll on throughout the day and fireworks light up the night, Fourth of July fun calls for favorite snacks that complement the excitement. Whether you’re a pyro or prefer to leave the fiery entertainment to the experts, one thing you can take charge of is the dessert table.

Summer is a perfect time to make fruit the star of the show, and Fourth of July is no exception. These special occasions can be uplifted with the aroma and flavor of Envy Apples, a leading apple variety that offers an invitation to guests to savor memorable moments together.

Their versatility makes them ideal for sweet treats like these Apple and Berry Cream Cheese Tarts for a patriotic touch with red, white and blue pops of color. These tasty bites are shareable, handheld and festive, making them a savvy solution that keeps entertaining simple.

Just combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla and milk, pipe onto baked tart shells and top with raspberries, blueberries and star-shaped apple cutouts. Better yet, you can even swap out raspberries for preferred red fruits like strawberries or cherries, if desired. If all the planning and entertaining leaves you short on time, turn to these Patriotic Apple “Donuts” that swap out traditional dough for thick, round apple slices topped with cream cheese and sprinkles. With just a few ingredients, you can slice the apples then let little ones in on the fun by spreading the cream cheese and decorating with sprinkles.

The craveable texture and crunch of Envy Apples provides balanced sweetness for these favorite desserts and beyond, giving guests the ultimate apple experience for all your Fourth of July festivities. They’re an appealing backdrop for pops of red and white in patriotic recipes as their flesh remains whiter longer, even after cutting or slicing, so they look fresh and delicious throughout the holiday. DIY Car Care Everyone Can Do

While taking your car to an auto service professional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all summer long.

With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway:

•Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

•Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant.

•Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper

functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

•Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid.

•To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles.

•Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

•Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold specifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months.

Residential Refresh: Personalized Touches for Your Home

Your home is an expression of you, your personality and your lifestyle. When it comes to personalizing your home’s aesthetic, try leaning into your senses to inspire change within your space.

Inspiration can be found everywhere around you – from taking cues from Mother Nature to “shopping” your own house or, with a little help from Air Wick, finding and incorporating your home’s signature scent.

Give yourself a residential refresh with these tips:

Rearrange Living Spaces

Breathing fresh air into a room doesn’t always require a complete overhaul, or even any construction or DIY projects. Sometimes all you need is a little rearranging. Shifting furniture to better suit your needs or let more natural light in can significantly improve the space’s aesthetic.

Additionally, the items you currently own are most reflective of your style; try “shopping” your own house by repurposing items from other areas or rooms to give them a fresh feel. When decor pieces are overused in one spot, they may feel brand new in a different space. These are practical and cost-effective tactics to create a new and inviting space for both you and any guests entering your home.

Introduce Plants and Greenery

When sourcing your design inspiration from nature, adding greenery is an inherent way to bring in the beauty and freshness of the great outdoors. To personalize your home with plants, visit a nursery or local flower shop and choose ones that are appealing to you based on their shape, color or size. Live plants offer multiple benefits, like naturally purifying the air, and studies have shown numerous therapeutic benefits of spending time with nature. Therefore, designing with natural elements, like house plants or flowers, can bring a sense of serenity into your home.

Find Your “Scentscape”

A home upgrade rooted in nature includes more than just what you can see and feel, it also includes engaging the sense of smell. One of the latest home decor trends, “scentscaping,” is growing in popularity as a way for individuals to enhance the ambiance of their homes through tailored scent.

“Scent is an often-overlooked aspect of design,” said Egypt Sherrod, HGTV personality who is both an interior designer and real estate broker, and Air Wick partner. “People tour homes and experience spaces with all their senses. It adds a new layer to home personalization, as an authentic fragrance experience often heightens the aura of your space beyond its physical layout. Scentscaping is the perfect way to add a bespoke vibe for your home that reflects your personal style, in turn creating a welcoming atmosphere.”

With innovative devices designed to deliver carefully blended scents like Air Wick’s Advanced Plug-In Scented Oil, you can enjoy longlasting pulses of scents inspired by nature in the comfort of your home for up to 60 days on low setting. With anti-fading technology, an ondemand boost button and adjustable intensity settings, you’ll notice the fragrances from the first drop to the last.

Update Colors

Introducing color to a room can transform its look, and the scale of change is up to you. You might repaint the entire space, simply paint an accent wall or even just spruce up a corner with a pop of color. Incorporating accessories or decorative elements with new colors can also create some variety, such as including pops of seasonal-inspired colors in artwork and textiles.

Switch Out Light Fixtures

A room’s lighting is an important detail for personalizing the type of mood and ambiance you are trying to achieve. Swapping out light fixtures for dimmers, for example, can create a brand new atmosphere, allowing you to adjust the light to the time of day and for your intended experience. Consider updating old lighting fixtures with new ones to enhance the presence of natural light or changing the bulb wattage to further impact the mood.

Embrace the Scent of the Season

If you tend to make frequent edits to your home’s design, you may also find the idea of experimenting with different fragrances appealing. A short-term scent can be ideal for seasonal swaps, like trading fresh spring blooms for sweet summer citrus, for example. Lasting for up to 45 days on low setting, Air Wick’s Essential Mist Diffuser fills the room with a gentle, fragrant mist with natural essential oils so you can set it and forget it. Adjustable settings are included on the device, and the cordless and portable design allow it to blend seamlessly into any home decor. Explore more inspiring ideas for incorporating a breath of fresh air into your home at airwick.us.

Scentscaping

to Give Your Home a Personalized Style

Achieving your perfect scentscape begins with natureinspired fragrances, including classics like White Sage + Mahogany, Lavender + Waterlily and Eucalyptus + Wild Berry. If sweeter scents are your preference, consider enticing blends like Pink Watermelon + Mimosa, Lush Honeysuckle + Raspberry or Hawaiian Guava + Tropical Flowers.

To establish a one-of-a-kind scentscape for your home, start with these tips from Sherrod:

1. Identify your scent preferences, whether leaning toward citrus, spicy, fruity, floral or woody notes.

2. Consider the scent’s intensity and the scent level you and your guests find pleasing.

3. If you plan on creating room-specific scents, or want to

use different fragrances in each room, consider how these scents interact with one another to harmonize the scents with contrasts that add dimension.

4. Consider rotating your seasonal scents to freshen up your home and bring new energy to your space at different times of the year.

5. Maintain a scent balance so different scents do not overpower each other. Rather, create a soft and pleasing aroma that establishes inviting spaces throughout your

National Independent Retailer Month

July is a special month for local communites across the country. It’s National Independent Retailer Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the unique and vibrant small businesses that form the backbone of our local economies. These small business play a critical role in fostering a sense of community and driving local prosperity.

National Independent Retailer Month began as a way to recognize the importance of small, independent retailers to our local economies. The initiative was launched in 2011 by Kerry Bannigan, a social entrepreneur and advocate for small businesses. The month-long celebration aims to highlight the significant contributions of independent retailers and encourage consumers to support their local shops. The origins of this celebration can be traced back to the broader movement to support small businesses, which gained momentum in the early 2000s. With the rise of big-box stores and online shopping, independent retailers faced increasing challenges. National Independent Retailer Month was established to remind consumers of the value of shopping locally and the positive impact it has on their communities.

Throughout July, communities across the nation come together to celebrate and support their local independent retailers. One popular way to celebrate is

through shop local campaigns, which encourage residents to visit and make purchases at local stores. These campaigns often include special promotions, discounts, and events designed to attract shoppers to local businesses. July is also a time for local festivals, markets, and fairs. These events provide a platform for independent retailers to showcase their products and connect with the community. From farmers’ markets to craft fairs, these gatherings highlight the diversity and creativity of local businesses.

In today’s digital age, social media plays a crucial role in promoting National Independent Retailer Month. Businesses and community organizations use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to share stories, photos, and promotions, encouraging consumers to shop locally. Additionally, independent retailers often collaborate with each other and with local organizations to create unique shopping experiences. These partnerships can include joint promotions, pop-up shops, and community events that draw attention to the benefits of shopping locally.

Independent retailers are more than just businesses; they are integral parts of our communities. Supporting local retailers has a significant economic impact. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, for every $100 spent at a local business, approximately $68 stays in the local economy, compared to just $43 when spent at a non-local business. This means

that supporting independent retailers helps create jobs, boost local income, and generate tax revenue that supports public services. Moreover, independent retailers contribute to the unique character and identity of our communities. They offer diverse products and services that reflect the local culture and needs. When we support these businesses, we help preserve the distinctive charm and personality of our towns and cities.

Another advantage of shopping at independent retailers is the level of customer service they provide. Owners and employees are usually deeply invested in their businesses and communities, which translates to personalized service and a genuine commitment to customer satisfaction. Additionally, shopping locally is often more environmentally friendly. Independent retailers typically source products locally, reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping. They also tend to occupy existing buildings, contributing to the revitalization of downtown areas and reducing urban sprawl.

Understanding the statistics behind small businesses can underscore their importance and the need for continued support. Small businesses employ nearly half of the U.S. workforce and generate approximately 44% of U.S. economic activity. Despite their size, they make significant contributions to the national GDP. Studies have shown that small business owners are often more engaged in their communities. They are more likely to support local charities, participate in community events, and invest in local infrastructure. Small businesses are also hotbeds of innovation and diversity. They bring new ideas, products, and services to the market and are often more adaptable to changing consumer needs.

As we celebrate National Independent Retailer Month, it’s important to reflect on how we, as a community, can support our local independent retailers. Make a conscious effort to shop at local independent stores whenever possible. Whether it’s for groceries, clothing, gifts, or services, choosing local businesses over larger chains can make a big difference. Use social media to share your positive experiences with local businesses. Leave reviews, post photos, and recommend your favorite local shops to friends and family. Participate in community events that support local businesses. From farmers’ markets to street fairs, these events provide a great opportunity to discover new shops and meet the people behind them. When giving gifts, consider purchasing from local retailers. Unique, locally-made products make thoughtful and meaningful presents that also support the community. Finally, get to know the owners and employees of your favorite local stores. Building personal connections with them can enhance your shopping experience and make you feel more invested in their success.

National Independent Retailer Month is more than just a celebration; it’s a reminder of the importance of supporting our local small businesses. Seven Garden Basics for Beginners G

rowing your own produce is an all-around smart practice, from the money you’ll save at the grocery store to the contributions you can make toward a cleaner planet.

Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your at-home garden:

1. Select a perfect spot. You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily, where erosion and other pitfalls (including hungry wildlife) won’t be a problem.

2. Choose between ground and containers. There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.

3. Understand the importance of quality soil. You may think any dirt will do, but keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or aged manure all help improve soil quality.

4. Keep water close. Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water when the soil is dry about an inch below the surface.

5. Plan for plenty of sun. A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.

6. Consider what you’ll grow. Starting with veggies you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. Plant according to a calendar. Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

Whether you’re a new or a seasoned gardener looking to start gardening, you simply need the right tools to do the job well. Consider these tips when purchasing essentials for your tool shed.

Shovel: A shovel with a pointed blade is a good all-around choice for digging, mixing and moving soil. Conversely, a flat-bladed shovel should be used for “cutting” tasks such as straight-side trenches and edging. After narrowing down which style of shovel best meets your needs, check the metal to ensure it’s well-constructed and won’t bend or break easily. Check fittings such as bolts and screws to ensure the blade and handle are strongly connected and can withstand reasonable pressure. Finally, spend a few minutes testing out the tool to ensure it fits well in your hand.

Rake: With numerous materials and shapes to choose from, finding the right rake can be intimidating. A basic fanshaped rake with metal fingers is a universally accepted, long-lasting option. Select a model with plenty of give in the fingers if you’ll be raking large areas and don’t want to damage the ground below. A rake made of firmer metal allows you to work and smooth soil. Purchasing the broadest width you can comfortably handle allows you to cover more ground, which means less work.

Depending on the space you’ll be tending, you may also consider purchasing a garden fork, which has fewer tines than a traditional rake and is ideal for aerating, weeding and turning small sections of soil.

Hoe: Whether flat or pointed, a hoe is essential for a weed-free garden. Flat versions can also be useful for breaking up clumps and hard spots on the surface while pointed hoes make quick work of rows and mounds to protect and irrigate your plantings.

Shears: A variety of shears are available to accomplish a wide range of garden tasks. Larger shears are ideal for big jobs such as shaping hedges, while smaller pruning shears are meant for snips and sprucing. Quality metal and sharp blades are important features. Be sure to choose a model with a safety latch to lock blades when not in use.

Gloves: Even if you eagerly embrace the chance to get your hands dirty, no tool shed is complete without a sturdy pair of gloves. Choose a material tough enough to protect from thorns but pliable enough to allow for free movement. Proper fit is key to avoiding blisters.

If you’re considering a kitchen renovation, you’ve probably heard cautions about avoiding overly trendy designs that can diminish your home’s value and limit its appeal to future buyers. That’s sound advice, but many of this year’s trends are relatively neutral and have long-term staying power.

Kitchen upgrades are typically all about making practical updates to meet the needs of a family. The key to smart design is incorporating functional elements a family requires while striking a balance between style and trends that quickly become outdated.

Before you dive into a kitchen project, consider these on-trend design recommendations from the experts at Wellborn Cabinet.

Add Health-Focused Features

As the hub of nutrition, it’s no surprise wellness design

features are making their way into the kitchen. Some examples include appliances with air frying or steaming features, and double ovens are appearing in more homes, making home meals for the family easier to manage. Also look for technology that simplifies meal planning and managing your pantry inventory, as well as features that regulate food storage temperatures more precisely, including during power outages.

Shift Back to Wood Stains

Painted cabinets had their moment, but the latest designs are revealing a movement back toward warm wood grains, specifically oak. As trends continue to shift toward embracing natural elements, as well as exploring diverse color palettes, cabinet manufacturers are constantly innovating to meet the demands of consumers and design professionals alike.

To elevate contemporary cabinetry design, Wellborn Cabinet introduced captivating finishes that celebrate natural materials

and textures. Inspired by the highly desired white oak at a more accessible price point, Boardwalk offers a breath of fresh air, allowing the unique oak wood grain to take center stage. The striking finish of Peppermill introduces a versatile darker brown hue with a subtle gray undertone, adding depth, dimension and sophistication. If you’re not quite ready to fully embrace natural wood tones, Alabaster may be a perfect alternative; this hue provides the timeless elegance of neutral white.

Dedicate Space for Beverages

Food prep may be a mainstay in functional kitchen design, but a growing number of homeowners are calling beverages a close second with the addition of built-in coffee bars or smoothie stations and specialized storage for beer and wine. Countertop or supplementary nugget ice makers are another example of trending kitchen accessories that reinforce a growing focus on beverages for all occasions.

Go for Contemporary Cabinetry

Your kitchen’s cabinet doors play an important role in defining your design aesthetic. Consider Wellborn’s wide variety of door styles, several of which have been redesigned to support the trend toward a simpler, smaller rail that’s in favor among designers and homeowners alike. With softer, more up-to-date appearances, they feature eased profiles to produce simple, straight, clean appearances. Options like Breckenridge and Ridgebrook offer updates to the modified shaker style with a clean, modern, less clunky aesthetic. Made of quality, solid wood, they feature a reversed raised center panel to coordinate with a variety of design styles.

Embrace the Middle Ground

Kitchen islands are hardly a new design element, but an increasing number of homeowners are making them a major focus of their renovations. A kitchen trends study by Houzz revealed 42% of homeowners are opting for islands that are 7 feet long or more. That’s extra prep space, but also more room for casual seating or socializing while hosting. Also gaining popularity are double islands for double the workspace.

Skip Bland Backsplash Tile

The wall space between your countertops and upper cabinets may not amount to much, but it’s a sure place to make a style statement. This year’s designers are saying farewell to stark white subway tile backsplashes. Instead, nature- and earth-inspired tones are trending. You can still use subway tile but consider a variation from the traditional stacked design. Texture is another option for modernizing your backsplash; think handcrafted tiles or earthy textures but take care to avoid overly busy patterns.
