The end of the year is quickly approaching. In the estate planning world, that means there are a few things we like for our clients to consider, depending on their assets and estate.
In 2024, the annual federal gift tax exclusion amount was raised to $18,000 per person and $36,000 for married couples who choose to share in making gifts. The annual federal gift tax exclusion is the amount you can transfer to another person without being required to report the gift to the IRS and without it counting against your lifetime estate tax exemption amount. If you make a gift of over $18,000 to any one person, you are required by law to file a gift tax return (Form 709), and the amount over $18,000 counts against your lifetime gifting and estate tax exemption.
For those of you with taxable or near-taxable estates ($13.61 million per person, or $27.22 million for married couples in 2024), in addition to other strategies, you are likely, or at least should be considering, making annual gifts to your loved ones each year in the amount of the annual federal gift tax exclusion.
For those of you with large but not *currently* taxable estates (range of $5-7 million per person), I would generally encourage you to consider making gifts up to the annual gift tax exclusion amount this year and every year. This is because the provision of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 that doubled the federal estate tax exemption amount is due to sunset at the end of 2025. If one (or more) of your loved ones is not old enough or mature enough to handle such amounts outright, there are other ways to gift money in a more restrictive way.
Consider a donation to your favorite charity or charities. Charitable gifts to qualifying charities generally have positive implications for both income tax and estate tax purposes. Certain types of charitable gifts can be deducted from your taxable income. The amount that can be deducted depends on your income and other factors. It is important to talk to your accountant or CPA to discuss potential income tax benefits. From an estate tax perspective, assets that you gift to certain qualified charities are also generally excluded from your estate.
This is important for business owners. The CTA is the federal law passed by Congress in 2021 that took effect on January 1, 2024. The CTA and the associated rule implemented by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) impose certain reporting requirements on “reporting companies,” which comprise most corporate entities (including small businesses) formed or registered to do business in the United States, such as corporations, LLCs, LLPs and other entities.
Regarding timing, reporting companies created or registered before January 1, 2024, have until January 1, 2025, to file their initial reports, while reporting companies created or registered on or after January 1, 2024, have 30 days after receiving notice of their creation or registration to file their initial reports. There are significant penalties for failing to comply in time.

Encourage a little devious creativity this Halloween with a popcorn bar (char-boo-terie board) that features everyone’s favorites. Start with enough freshly popped popcorn to feed all your little zombies and vampires then add seasonal favorites like candy corn, chocolate candies, individually wrapped treats, dried fruit, nuts and beyond.
To pop popcorn on a stovetop, cover the bottom of a 3- to 4-quart pan with a thin layer of vegetable oil (don’t use butter, it will burn). Place 3 kernels of popcorn in the pan, cover with a loose lid that allows steam to escape and heat. When the kernels pop, pour in enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan, one kernel deep, then cover the pan and shake to evenly spread the oil. When the popping begins to slow to a few seconds apart, remove the pan from the stovetop. The heated oil will still pop the remaining kernels.
Whether you’re thinking about selling your home or just making some updates, it’s always smart to consider renovations that will enhance the enjoyment of your home and increase your property’s long-term value. One key improvement many homeowners consider is updating their home’s flooring to solid or engineered hardwood, an investment that can maximize a home’s style and value.
Hardwood flooring instantly transforms a space, and you can choose from many types and hues of wood to suit the design style that’s just right for you. You can also stay ontrend by using hardwood flooring throughout your home to achieve a seamless, cohesive look.
“Hardwood flooring is always a standout feature that brings timeless, stylish appeal to any home,” says Jennifer Meska, Head of Merchandising at LL Flooring. “Solid or engineered hardwood flooring provides a natural look that can vary across colors, finishes and styles, instantly adding updated style and sophistication to any home.”
The National Realtor Association’s 2022 Remodeling Impact Report found that homeowners who install new hardwood flooring get an average return on investment (ROI) of up to 118%. On top of that, the National Wood Flooring Association has found that 99% of real estate
agents believe homes with quality hardwood floors are easier to sell, and 90% believe they sell for a higher price. All of this means that hardwood floors can essentially pay for themselves in resale value.
The timeless appeal of hardwood flooring
Hardwood floors have been around for a long time, and for good reason. They can create the perfect complement to a wide range of home design styles, offering natural tone, beauty and sophistication that’s hard to duplicate with any other material.
On top of that, hardwood floors are known for their timeless quality - hardwood has been a trusted flooring material for hundreds of years, and it’s near-assured that they will stay in style for generations to come.
Another advantage of hardwood flooring is that you can choose from a wide variety of styles and species of wood to achieve different looks, and you can consider either solid or engineered hardwood for even more options depending on the needs of your home.
Here are just a couple of examples of selections available to today’s homeowners from LL Flooring’s Bellawood premium line of solid and engineered hardwood, which offers a 100-year residential warranty.
Classic, enduring style
Hickory is the hardest of all North American woods, making it perfect for those who want beauty and longlasting quality, especially for high-traffic areas. The 5-inch-wide planks in LL Flooring’s Natural Hickory Solid Hardwood Flooring are factory finished with premium aluminum oxide for a fortified finish, offering excellent resistance to stains, scuffs and scratches.
This natural option in hickory flooring stands out for its high-contrast color variations and unique grain patterns, with colors running from light tans to deep browns and reddish tones laced throughout. Hickory floors are equally attractive in a more classic or traditional style home, for a sophisticated and modern city loft or a rustic country cabin.
Modern engineered elegance
LL Flooring’s Claire Gardens Oak Engineered Hardwood Flooring gives you the option for on-trend, wider planks (8.5 inches wide). The buttery cream coloring of this classic white oak flooring gives these blonde planks an inviting lightness and beauty that complements a variety of today’s preferred styles, ranging from modern farmhouse, minimalist and Scandinavian to biophilic, eclectic and bohemian designs.
Engineered hardwood is an enhanced wood product that offers improved performance, and lighter tones can help to reflect the light in any room of your home for a more open, bright and airy ambience.
Whichever hardwood flooring option you choose, you can relax and enjoy its beauty now and for years to come - or prepare your home to sell - knowing that you’ve made a sound investment in the future of your home.

October 4th marks National Golf Lovers Day, the perfect excuse to dust off your clubs and spend the day doing what you love most—golf. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or still trying to perfect your swing, this day is all about embracing the sport that has challenged men for centuries.
Golf, as we know it today, was born on the rugged coastlines of Scotland in the 15th century. The game has evolved from hitting rocks with sticks into the precise sport we know today, played on some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Some even believe the game goes back further, with different civilizations creating their own versions of it. And while it’s doubtful that Tolkien’s tale of hobbits knocking goblin heads into holes is historically accurate, it sure makes for a great story.
Fast-forward to today, and golf has become a pastime not just for the elite but for anyone who enjoys the challenge of the game. From the quiet focus on the tee box to the satisfying sound of the ball dropping into the cup, it’s a sport that has stood the test of time.
This October 4th, take the day to appreciate the game you love. Gather your friends for a round, enjoy an Arnold Palmer or two, and let the beauty of the course remind you why this game has been a gentleman’s sport for generations. Golf isn’t just about the scores; it’s about the time spent with friends, the satisfaction of a well-placed shot, and the pure enjoyment of the sport.
So get out there, hit some birdies before lunch, and make the most of National Golf Lovers Day.
Golf on the Moon: Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first (and only) person to play golf on the moon, hitting a few balls during the Apollo 14 mission.
The Longest Hole-in-One: This unbelievable shot was made at the Lake Hefner course in Oklahoma City, with a 427-yard drive.
Caddies and Cadets: The word “caddy” originates from the French word “caday,” meaning youngest child, as young boys were often tasked with carrying clubs for their elders.
Pre-Tees Era: Before tees became mainstream in the 1920s, golfers had to build little sand piles to balance their balls on. Imagine doing that before every drive!
Birdies and Beyond: Everyone knows a birdie is one under par, but did you know an albatross (or double eagle) means you’re a whopping three shots under par?
Whether you’re hitting the course solo or with a group of buddies, here are a few tips to help you sharpen your game:
Focus on Your Swing Fundamentals: Even the pros spend time on the basics. Keep your stance solid, grip firm but relaxed, and take the time to align your shot properly.
Master the Short Game: The driving range is fun, but don’t forget that the real magic happens around the greens. Practicing your chipping and putting can take strokes off your score.
Stay Hydrated and Loose: Golf may seem like a relaxing game, but walking 18 holes in the sun can be grueling. Keep hydrated and stretch between swings to avoid any unnecessary stiffness.
Play Smart, Not Hard: Instead of going for the longest drive every time, focus on accuracy. Laying up when necessary can save you from a disaster shot.
Coffee lovers, rejoice! National Coffee Day is just around the corner, and it’s time to raise a mug to that delightful brew that fuels our mornings and warms our souls. Whether you’re a fan of the classic drip, a cappuccino connoisseur, or a cold brew aficionado, this editorial is for you. Let’s take a caffeinated journey through the rich history of coffee, its evolution in America, and some fun facts that will perk up your day!
Did you know coffee dates back to the 15th century? Legend has it that a goat herder in Ethiopia discovered coffee when his goats got a little extra lively after munching on coffee berries. Word spread, and soon people were grinding and boiling the beans to create the energizing drink we know today. By the 1600s, coffee had made its way to Europe, where it gained popularity in cafes, which quickly became hubs for intellectuals, artists, and socialites.
Coffee found its way to America in the mid-1600s when it was brought to New Amsterdam, later known as New York. However, it wasn’t until the Boston Tea Party of 1773 that coffee truly became America’s drink of choice. After the revolt against British tea taxes, colonists switched their beverage loyalty, and the American love affair with coffee began.
In America, coffee has gone through quite the transformation. What started as simple black drip coffee served in diners evolved into an explosion of flavors, brewing methods, and coffeehouse culture. Today, you can find everything from classic espresso shots to intricate lattes with foam art and even seasonal favorites like pumpkin spice lattes.
Specialty coffee shops have become community hubs, much like the old European cafes. With the rise of artisanal coffee roasters and small-batch brewing, people are more passionate than ever about where their beans come from and how they’re brewed. Whether it’s a quick caffeine fix or a slow sip with friends, coffee continues to bring people together.
While America is hooked on drip coffee and cold brews, other countries have their own unique ways of brewing. In Italy, espresso is king, while in Turkey, coffee is brewed thick and strong, often with a bit of sugar. In Vietnam, iced coffee is often made with sweetened condensed milk for a creamy treat. Why not try a different brewing style on National Coffee Day?
Whether you’re grabbing a free cup from your favorite café (many offer promotions on National Coffee Day!) or trying your hand at brewing something special at home, this day is all about celebrating the magic of coffee. Invite a friend to a coffee date, try a new flavor, or just savor your morning ritual a little more.
No matter how you take your coffee, it’s a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life come in a mug. Cheers to National Coffee Day!
The good old-fashioned drip coffee still reigns supreme, with espresso-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos following close behind.
How many coffee shops are there in America?
As of 2023, there are over 37,000 coffee shops across the U.S.! From your local neighborhood café to national chains, there’s no shortage of places to grab a cup of joe.
How many people drink coffee in the U.S.?
A whopping 62% of Americans drink coffee every day. That’s about 150 million daily coffee drinkers. It’s safe to say that coffee is the most popular beverage in the country, second only to water.
Making coffee at home can be just as satisfying as grabbing a cup from your favorite café! Here’s a quick guide for a simple yet delicious brew:
1. Start with Fresh Beans: Coffee is best when made with freshly ground beans. Invest in a quality coffee grinder and grind your beans just before brewing.
2. Use Filtered Water: Believe it or not, water quality matters. Filtered water helps enhance the flavor of the coffee.
3. Measure Correctly: For the perfect ratio, use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water.
4. Choose Your Brew Method: Whether you love a French press, pour-over, or classic drip, the method is all about personal preference. Experiment to find your favorite!
5. Sip and Enjoy: Take a moment to savor your creation, whether it’s black or with a splash of cream and sugar.
Every October, we turn our attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading knowledge about breast cancer, its early detection, and how we can make a difference. In 2024, it’s estimated that over 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but thanks to advancements in detection and treatment, there is real hope.
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. It’s the most common cancer among women, but men can be affected too. The good news? When breast cancer is detected early—before it has spread beyond the breast—the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early action saves lives, and that’s why we’re here to help raise awareness about the importance of regular screening and knowing the signs.
While we can’t control all the risk factors for breast cancer (like age or genetics), there are lifestyle changes we can make to lower the risk:
Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer, particularly after menopause. Exercise regularly: Staying active helps keep your body strong and reduces your risk. Eat a balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in processed foods, can support overall health.
Limit alcohol: Drinking alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer. Limiting intake to one drink a day or less can help reduce your risk. Don’t smoke: Smoking has been linked to a higher risk of many cancers, including breast cancer.
Regular screening is key to catching breast cancer early. Mammograms, the most common screening method, can detect breast cancer years before physical symptoms appear. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) emphasizes that early detection gives women the best chance for survival.
If you’re 40 or older, it’s recommended to have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. For those with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, talk to your doctor about getting screened earlier.
Organizations like the NBCF are dedicated to “Helping Women Now®,” ensuring women have access to screenings, support, and education. But they can’t do it alone. You can help by donating, spreading awareness, or participating in fundraising events. Every dollar raised goes toward research, early detection programs, and support for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that while a diagnosis can be scary, there is hope. With early detection, healthy living, and the support of communities like ours, we can continue to make strides toward a future where breast cancer is no longer a threat. Together, let’s act early and make an impact!

oing door to door for candy and treats is part of many families’ Halloween traditions, and the routine almost always ends with a kitchen loaded with treats. When the spooky season comes to a close, consider these ways to use up those delectable goodies.
A tried and true classic. It’s likely you won’t be the only person in your office bringing in leftovers a few days after Halloween, but there’s a good chance you have coworkers without kids who may not be as tired of treats as parents.
Certain candies like chocolates freeze better than others, so be conscious of what you’re putting in the freezer. This method keeps your sweets better longer and allows you to use them as ingredients in baking desserts throughout the year, or you can simply thaw a few at a time for snacking.
The traditional recipe calls for peanuts, raisins and small chocolate pieces, but you can take matters into your own hands with a creative hodgepodge of just about anything you’re left with after Halloween passes. Candy corn, pretzels, chocolates and other sweets are perfect for mixing up as a snack to put in baggies for work or school – just choose your family’s favorites and toss together.
Leftover goodies don’t have to be hidden in the pantry. Grab a small glass dish, fill it with wrapped fun-size candies and place it on an end table, kitchen island or anywhere guests often gather and would feel invited to take one.
Although it’s (probably) your kids’ hard work that led to an abundance of candies, you can enjoy the fruits of their labor. For adults who enjoy a sweet chocolate treat (even if it isn’t fancy) with a glass of red wine or spiked hot chocolate, there are few better ways to wind down after Halloween than with a boozy pairing.

Did you know there is an urgent need for nearly 800,000 skilled technicians to enter the American workforce by 2027 in order to meet demand? This pressing shortage has proven challenging to remedy, particularly due to the underrepresentation of diverse groups in skilled trades. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that women are particularly underrepresented, accounting for less than 3% of employed technicians.
At the same time, students across the U.S. are questioning the value of a traditional four-year college education, fueling a 16% surge in enrollment for vocational training programs in the last year alone. Young Americans are exploring alternative career paths more than ever, yet the significant gender gap in automotive, diesel, collision repair, aviation and avionics fields - to name a few - remains.
The evidence shows that trade industries are at a crossroads. Luckily, a recent survey by California winery Rebellious Wines revealed that most Americans (55%) believe in breaking gender norms through their career choices, suggesting an exciting solution.
Rebellious Wines, in partnership with TechForce Foundation, has taken decisive action to empower a diverse workforce while also helping to fill the urgent skills gap, by creating the Rebellious Riveters Scholarship Program. This new scholarship aims to inspire individuals from all backgrounds to pursue successful careers in the skilled trades and provides more than financial aid; it opens doors for underrepresented students by empowering them to thrive in rewarding and essential careers.
“This scholarship champions the spirit of rebelling for good by empowering students from underrepresented populations to pursue careers in non-traditional fields,” said Bob DeRoose, president and CEO of Kobrand Corporation. “We’re committed to breaking barriers that have kept many people out of these lucrative careers. The Woodlands, TX — Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital has been recognized as a top performer in the 2024 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking by Vizient Inc. For a fourth consecutive year, Houston Methodist The Woodlands is ranked No. 1 out of 204 Vizient members in the nationwide Complex Care Medical Centers cohort. This ranking demonstrates excellence in delivering high-quality care based on the Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking, which has been conducted annually since 2005.
“We are proudly celebrating being nationally ranked as the No. 1 Complex Care Medical Center for a fourth consecutive year by Vizient,” said David Bernard, Chief Executive Officer, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. “This prestigious national recognition is a direct result of the hard work and commitment of our physicians, nurses and staff to keeping the patient at the center of everything we do and achieving our vision of providing our patients with unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation. This achievement highlights our amazing culture of safety and relentless consistency in providing our patients with the very best care and service possible. I’m very proud of our team.”
This year, 860 participating hospitals were segmented into four cohorts for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study measures performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity of care. The study factors in measures from
the Vizient Clinical Data Base and includes performance data from the HCAHPS survey and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.
The Vizient Quality and Accountability Study helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers and identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity. The recognition period is for work spanning July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.
“Leading hospitals are leveraging data and analytics to provide superior clinical outcomes,” said David Levine, chief medical officer for Vizient. “This award honors Houston Methodist The Woodlands for demonstrating leadership focused on results and a culture of collaboration and adaptability that is necessary to succeed. It is a pleasure to congratulate Houston Methodist The Woodlands on their achievement and commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.”
