Chairman’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North League game against Flint Town Utd.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Flint players, coaching team, Committee and supporters.

Flint achieved the runners up spot in our League and promotion back to the JD Cymru Premier League on Tuesday night with a 4-0 win at Mold Alex. Our congratulations go to them and their supporters on a successful season.

Holywell may well win the title as they have two games left to play. Their game against Llanidloes on Tuesday night had to be abandoned due to a medical emergency midway through the second half, where sadly one of their supporters passed away. Our thoughts and condolences go to the family , friends and all at Holywell FC at this sad time.

Even if Holywell win the League they cannot be promoted as they have not reached the required Tier 1 criteria to gain promotion to the JD Cymru Premier League. Flint have passed the criteria required and will therefore gain the promotion spot.

We ourselves have another game after tonight, which is next Tuesday evening against Bangor 1876. The weather has been against us with this fixture as it’s the third time of asking we’ve tried to host it. On both occasions the pitch has been declared unplayable as we had a few soft areas where the ball would not bounce, and players feet would have been sinking into the mud. This was sufficient to call the games off. This has been so frustrating for everyone linked to the Club, but there is nothing we can do about the weather.

There is hearsay that it is the Club that calls the game off. This is not the case as the FAW insist that a match cannot be called off without a recognised official visiting the ground and declaring a pitch unplayable. In both instances we so wanted the game to go head having spent so much time having prepared the pitch, buying food and drink for our café, and having programmes printed.

The last game scheduled to be played here is the Cymru North v Cymru South game on Saturday May 4th. After this game the 360 Groundcare Team will have the close season to actively work on the pitch to prepare if for next season With regards to our grant applications to carry out the building costs for our new changing rooms, we have secured 85% of the grant monies required. I hope to have a decision on the remaining 15% required by the end of the month. Once it is all agreed we can then set about demolishing the existing changing rooms and starting the new build. Ideally, we would like to start this the week starting May 13th, but we cannot do anything until all the grant monies have been agreed.

Back to this evening’s game. Our lads have definitely secured a sixth position in the league and with two games left could also reach fifth with wins tonight and Tuesday. It’s a great achievement for Dewi and his lads in their first season back in the JD Cymru Tier 2 League after last season’s double winning season. Best of luck to them this evening

I’d like to finish off by thanking you the supporters for all your support this season. We’ve had some great crowds here at Central Park, none more so than the 1145 that were here for the Boxing Day game against Ruthin when Paul Fleming an injury time winner to secure a 2-1 victory.

A finish like that would be superb this evening. Enjoy the game

Enjoy the game.

Manager’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North League game against Flint Town Utd

We come into the game after having a week’s break with the Bangor game being called off last Friday. We were keen to get that game played as it would follow on from our dominating display a week earlier at Llanidloes when we won 7-0. Owen Davies continued his excellent run of form by nabbing a hat-trick and it was really special to see one of our longest serving players Billy Holmes getting a rare goal.

It was good to get a win like this after a difficult period which saw us pick up just one point in our four previous games.

Congratulations to Lee Fowler and his Flint team that had promotion to the JD Cymru Premier League confirmed on Tuesday evening. They have played some great football over the season and have been duly rewarded.

Tonight’s game will be a tough one as Flint are in a roll and been undefeated since their loss to league leaders Holywell in mid February. We have already played them twice this season, once in the League on the opening day of the season and also in the Welsh Blood Services League Cup. The League game was a close affair when we went down 2-1 in a game that could have gone either way.

The League Cup game saw us win 4-3 in November at Flint against a Flint team that had several youngsters starting that day. Nevertheless, we put in a a good solid performance that day that warranted the win as we became the first team to win at Flint this season.

As we approach the end of the season, I’d like to spend some time reviewing what we have achieved this season and the players involved. Twelve months ago, we were celebrating a special season winning the League and Cup Double in the Lock Stock Ardal Tier 3 level of Welsh Football. We also reached the FAW Amateur Cup Final

This season we have stepped up to the higher level and more than held our own. Our young team buoyed with a couple of experienced heads have really excelled themselves as we have cemented a top half finish in the League. We made two key loan signings from TNS in Josh Lock and Owen Davies and their quality have boosted our performances.

Azzy Jones has proved to be a top keeper as he has kept us in games at times with some top class saves. Young Jim McHarrie deputised for him in two games and did so well and he’ll push Azzy for competition next season. We wish him well following his recent knee operation.

Our defence of Billy Holmes, Dan Parry-Jones, Ben Lockley and Sion Jones has dealt with some top class attackers in a competent and able manner and their experience at this level will benefit us next season as we move forward In midfield our captain and vice captain Paul Fleming and Keiran Roberts have been inspirational with their endeavour and commitment on the pitch. Dion Gibbins joined us in January and has quickly adapted to our style of play and has put in some excellent games. Sion has also proved his versatility in being able to slip seamlessly into midfield when called upon.

Nathan Brown has proved he is such an asset to the team with some quality goals and he is our top goalscorer with 14 League Goals and 2 Cup goals. Some of his strikes have been just first class. It has been great to see defender Morgan Thomas-Sadler overcome a serious injury in the early part of the season and now start to get back to full fitness with some encouraging first team appearances. Kyle Cooper joined us from Llandudno in January and was unfortunate to take a nasty injury not long after which has kept him out since then. Kyle, along with youngsters Ollie Hansen, Matty Cooke, Rhys Lloyd and Owen Herbert have all played valuable parts throughout the campaign and we’re looking for each one of them to continue their development with more appearances next season .

Some players have left us as the season progressed, but that’s football. They’ve all helped contribute to a great season.

My management team of Matty and Brett have been first class as I always need to bounce ideas off them and they are always honest and positive with their thoughts. KP was with us aswell on the bench until a couple of months ago and his enthusiasm helped gee the lads up for a game. Good luck KP on getting back to fitness to start playing once again.

All in all, it’s been a great season as we have proved more than capable of holding our own in this league. Thanks to you our supporters, especially those who travel to away games with us. Your support is so much welcomed by all of us within our squad.

REPORT | Llanidloes Town 0 - 7 Denbigh Town

Town equal record with seven-goal thumping

Denbigh Town equalled their biggest winning margin in the second tier on Saturday with a convincing 7-0 away win over Llanidloes Town.

A hatrick from Owen Davies and Billy Holmes’ first goal in two years would prove to be the headline as Town equalled a record lasting 27 years - Incidently that game in 1996 ended 8-1 to Denbigh against Llanidloes.

Davies netted the trio along with Holmes alongside a brace from Paul Fleming and superb effort from Nathan Brown.

It ends a winless run of four matches and finishes Denbigh’s away campaign.

Dewi Llion named one change to the side as Max Cooke came in to the starting XI in the place of Morgan Thomas-Sadler.

Town began the game as they would continue for the next 90 minutes firmly on top. It took just two minutes for the first foray into the hosts’ box as Davies appeared to be hacked down in the area but any claims were waved away by the referee.

The pressure mountain even in the earliest of moments as Brown and Ben Lockley both had efforts blocked as the pressure was rampt up. Eventually, that pressure told on 28 minutes when a Brown free-kick struck the post before skipper Fleming cleaned up from the rebound to give Denbigh the lead.

The advantage was doubled ten minutes later as Owen Davies was fed down the right by Fleming before slotting it underneath the body of the goalkeeper. The TNS loanee had his second of the afternoon just four minutes later when a quick thinking Brown took a freekick promptly, slotting through Davies who finished with ease.

Half-Time: Llanidloes Town 0-3 Denbigh Town

Within five minutes of the restart Denbigh extended their advantage. Dion Gibbins played a long ball forward for Brown who rushing through lobbed the goalkeeper from 35-yards to surely put the game to bed.

Davies completed his hatrick on 54 minutes by firing through a crowd of bodies before surely the highlight of the match. Holmes hasn’t scored for Denbigh since April 6th 2021 in a league encounter with St Asaph, exactly two years later he finally broke the long goalless streak. And what a way to do it, making a superb run through the middle of the park he beat several defenders before smashing it into the bottom right corner with the outside of his left boot.

Holmes turned provider on 66 minutes when his superb cross found the head of Fleming to nod home a net busting effort and round off an absolutely outstanding afternoon.

Town came close to adding to the lead, substitute Rhys Lloyd’s header was just about saved at the far post but Town will be more than happy with their final away trip of the season.

Denbigh Town: A.Jones, Lockley, Cooke, Parry-Jones, Holmes, Roberts, Gibbins, Brown, Fleming, S.Jones, Davies

Subs: Cooper, Thomas-Sadler, Hansen, Lock, Lloyd

REPORT | Berriew Ladies 2-2 Denbigh Town Ladies

Points shared on final day

Denbigh Town Ladies ended a superb runners-up campaign with a point in mid-Wales on Sunday.

Goals from Catrin Davies and Beth Kell gave Town a two-goal advantage but the home side fought back to take a share of the points.

It means Denbigh finished the campaign 2nd in the North Wales Women’s Football League East, 11 points adrift of champions Flint and three clear of third-placed Kinmel Bay.

Town began the game well and led after 23 minutes when Davies latched on to a ball from Lowri Claybrook to turn home.

Within five minutes the lead was doubled as Davies turned provider slotting the ball to Kell who finished for her eighth goal of the league season.

However, within a minute Berriew pulled one back via Faye Marshall halving the deficit going into the break.

Half-Time: Berriew Ladies 1-2 Denbigh Town Ladies

Town were keen to end the campaign on a high but will be disappointed with a second half that saw Berriew’s fightback complete on 63 minutes. That woman again Marshall thumping the ball home to secure a point for the mid-Walians.

Neither side found a further breakthrough as the curtain came down on the NWWFL East campaign with only the decider between East and West to play, but for Denbigh the season doesn’t stop just yet. The girls next travel to Llangefni in the Quarter-Final of the Betty Pickering Cup on April 28th.

Denbigh Town Ladies: Young, S.Jones, E.Morris, Adler, C.Morris, Claybrook, Harrison, Kell, Purvis, Roberts, Davies

Subs: Lawson, Bancroft, Cooper

REPORT | Chirk AAA Reserves 4-1 Denbigh Town Reserves

Reserves lose out in Chirk

Denbigh Town Reserves recorded back-to-back defeats on Saturday as Chirk AAA came from behind to take three points at a sodden Holyhead Road.

Andy Thomas’ first half opener was cancelled out by four second half strikes to leave Denbigh ten points adrift of top spot.

The match began well for Denbigh as Owen Herbert swung in a corner for Thomas to poke home in the box and give Town the lead in what was an encouraging start for the visitors.

However, a second-half fightback began when just before the hour mark Ryan Williams stuck his leg out in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, with the resulting penalty converted by Toby Nash.

The score was reversed with sixteen minutes to play as Nash found Brandon Edwards who put Chirk ahead and now Town were chasing the game. Denbigh loaded on the pressure, notably via Thomas’ free-kick being superbly denied whilst skipper Josh Griffiths couldn’t take his chance.

Denbigh continued to push but were caught out in the dying embers, Harvey Edwards doubled the advantage before adding his second and fourth for the hosts in stoppage time.

Denbigh Town Reserves: Jac Jones, Devine, Roberts, Williams, Smith, James, Herbert, Griffiths, Josh Jones, Thomas, Geth Rogers

Subs: Senior, Matischok, Nash, Lewis

Referee: Levi Roberts

Brief History

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.

After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.

In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.

After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level.

Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.

In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.

After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.

Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.

In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football

Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season.

Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).

However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager

Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.

New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.

Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.

The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22.

The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.

Brief History continued
John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.

History

Flint’s had a football club since 1886, when Flint F.C. started playing at Strand Park on the banks of the Dee Estuary, near to where the current stadium is.

The club made an early impression by reaching the first Welsh Amateur Cup final in 1890-9, losing to Wrexham Victoria 4-1.

By the turn of the century the town of Flint had three teams; Flint Town, Flint Athletic and Flint UAC (United Alkali Company) In 1905, Flint UAC and Flint Town amalgamated, taking the name of Flint Town. In 1909, as a Chester and District League side the club won their first major cup by defeating Pwllheli 1-0 in the final of the North Wales Amateur Cup.

In 1924 the club left Stand Park for a new ground at Holywell Road, which was to become their home till 1993. The new ground was then better equipped and could hold up to 3000 spectators. This size of crowd were common in the 1920s, they were keen to see Flint’s part time professionals play. Led by Captain Emlyn Jones, Flint reached the 1925 Welsh Cup final only to lose to Wrexham’s professional team by 3 goals to 1. Regular cup wins were to follow however, as Flint won the North Wales Amateur Cup on three occasions between 1931 and 1932.

Following the Second World War, the amalgamation of Flint Town and Flint Athletic football clubs resulted in the formation of the club bearing the title Flint Town United Football Club which entered the Welsh League (North) for the 1949-50 season, finishing runners-up to Holyhead Town. By this time, however, the club had already won the Welsh Amateur Cup, having defeated Troedyrhiw 2-1 in the 1947-48 final.

Under the managership of Billy Russell Flint became a formidable side in the early 50s, with the pinnacle achievement coming in 1954 when they won the Welsh Senior Cup. Inspired by Welsh International Billy Hughes, whose career was disrupted by the war, overcame Holywell Town, Oswestry Town, Rhyl, Llanelli and a semi-final 2-1 win over First Division Cardiff City, in front of a crowd of 10,683 at the Racecourse. They went on to beat third division Chester City 2-0 in the final, again at the Racecourse Ground Wrexham in front of a crowd of 15,584. During this period, they also won the League title in three consecutive seasons and were runners up on two occasions.

Efforts to move into the English league system were stymied, and the team’s fortunes dwindled although they did win the Welsh Youth Cup in 1965 and the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1969.

During the 1970s and 80s the club moved between various leagues, becoming league champions of the Clwyd League in 1978/79 and Welsh League (North) in the 1988-89 season. In 1990/91, a reorganisation of the league structure saw the creation of the Cymru Alliance, and Flint, under Tony Martin and Les Davies, were inaugural winners of the league. whilst also winning the North Wales Challenge Cup for the first time. To cap an excellent season they overcame South Wales Champions Abergavenny 2-1, to become the non-league champions of Wales.

In 1992, Fint became founder members of the League of Wales (LOW). The following season the club moved to a new ground, back to its original home on the banks of the Dee Estuary. After six years in the League of Wales, with a fourth place finish (1993/94) being our highest placing during this time, and with finances becoming an increasing burden with no main sponsors, the club eventually lost it’s place when it finished third from bottom (being relegated due to the LOW reducing the number of teams within the league under UEFA rules), rejoining the Cymru Alliance League.

A number of fallow years followed, although in 2006/07 they did once again win the North Wales Challenge Cup, defeating Prestatyn Town 1-0.

Fast forward to 2019/20, and the club finished runners up to Prestatyn in the Cymru North. However, with the champions being refused the domestic licence, after an absence of 22 years, Flint were back in the top tier of Welsh domestic football.

Despite finishing next to bottom in that first season back, Flint were spared relegation as the Covid pandemic had meant no Tier 2 leagues were operating. For 2021/22, under the management of Neil Gibson, the club excelled and finished in the top half, reaching the play off final only to lose to Caernarfon Town in extra time.

But at the end of the season, Gibson, along with a host of players, abruptly departed, leaving plans in disarray. Lee Fowler was appointed manager, with Iwan Williams as his assistant. The pair were faced with the unenviable task of putting virtually a new team together from scratch within a few weeks. That they were able to do so, and take the fight right down to the final game of the season, is testament to their dedication, but ultimately results went against us, and we were relegated back into the Cymru North for season 2023/24.
