THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Central Park this evening for this JD Cymru North game against Llay Welfare. I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Llay Welfare players, coaching team, Committee and supporters

It’s our First Team’s last home game of the season and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the management team of Dewi, Matty Jones, Simon Roberts and Liam Nash for all their hard work this season. At the start of the season, we knew the league was going to be a lot tougher than the season before with Colwyn Bay having been relegated from the JD Cymru Premier and last year’s champions Holywell Town remaining in the league rather than being promoted It really has been a great league to play in this season So much goes on behind the scenes within the management team and they have all helped contribute so much to hopefully a top-half finish to the season

The players have obviously played their part and we’ve been involved in some thrilling games both here at Central Park and at away grounds The established players from the last few seasons have once again done so much to enhance our performances and they have been joined by new players who have signed in the transfer windows, and it’s also been great to see a few youngsters from our Juniors given the chance to play with the first team

Our Reserves team under Liam with his coaches, Sion Jones, Richard Morris, Al Griffiths and Craig Morris have done well in continuing our policy of giving youngsters from our Junior section their first real taste of Senior football. With the addition of some senior players to help with the balance of the squad, they have done well to achieve a midtable position in the FAW Reserves League Next season the format of this League will change and the FAW are in the throes of giving us more details on this new structure

Our Ladies under Aled Davies’ management along with Carla Rizzi as Coach dramatically missed out on reaching the final of the Betty Pickering Shield when they lost to a last-minute penalty in a 3-2 loss to CPD Merched Henllan last week Nevertheless, the Ladies deserve credit for their season where they finished in the top four of the North East Wales Women’s League

The support we have seen at Central Park this season has been excellent. We have seen some great attendances – 1,046 for our Boxing Day game against Ruthin, 667 for our Welsh Cup Quarter-Final against Llanelli, 580 for our Colwyn Bay game and the Reserves attracted the highest Reserve attendance of their league when 240 came to their local derby with Ruthin Thank you for your support – it really has been fantastic and thank you for bearing with us as our new Community Facility is being built and the disruption that this has caused

We hope to have the new building ready for the new season. It’s a tough ask as there is a lot of work still to do but it really is taking shape now Work will also start within the next fortnight on lengthening our pitch at both ends so that we have the correct pitch requirements for the Under 19s Euros coming here in June 2026

Our volunteers and Committee have been tremendous with their support this season. With Popsey Griffiths (87), Owen Thomas (86) and Clwyd Williams (72) welcoming you at the gate we have three of the oldest volunteers in the league and they have been a steady fixture here for many many seasons Along with our stewards and kitchen/bar volunteers we are so lucky to have such a willing band of people able to help provide their time to the Club Thank you to them all

Enjoy tonight’s game and the close season. We look forward to welcoming you back in August.

THE GAFFER

Welcome to our last home game of the season against our visitors Llay Welfare.

Last week we put up an admirable display against league leaders Colwyn Bay going down 1-0 in a game where I thought we deserved a point at least We had several chances to equalise after they took the lead midway through the first half We took some time to settle into the game and it wasn’t until the 20th minute that we were playing the way we wanted to. We were on top when they scored – that’s football for you. Keelan Williams made his first start since his surgery in January and it is so good to have seen the progress he has made as he has worked so hard to get back to match fitness

Sion Jones had a shot that whistled over the crossbar just before half time and just after the break Alfie Vaughan had a similar effort just miss the target. If either of these had gone in, I believe we could have caused a real upset

Credit to Colwyn Bay though. They have a well-disciplined squad that plays crisp fast flowing football and were very dangerous when they broke out from defence It’s a fascinating end to the season with them and Airbus fighting for the one promotion spot. The support we had at Llanelian Road was amazing. Our supporters outsung the home support and could be heard throughout the game and helped spur our lads on Very much appreciated by all of us

With tonight’s game and Gresford away next week we’re going to achieve a mid-table finish to the season I feel that’s a creditable achievement bearing in mind the strength of the league. I knew from the start that Colwyn Bay, Airbus and Holywell would be at the top Then there’s a batch of teams fighting for the remaining top places

We had the worst start possible to the season going down 7-0 at Airbus in our first game Things could only get better after that display which I was unable to influence as I was suspended for the game. I learnt a lesson the hard way that day

A mixed bag of results saw us in the bottom half of the table at the end of September. Then, a last-minute winner against Bangor in a 4-3 victory was followed by an excellent 6-2 win over Llandudno with 16-year-old Tom Salusbury scoring a memorable first goal for the Club when he ran from the halfway line to slot home our sixth goal

As we moved towards Christmas more indifferent results showed we needed to strengthen the squad in the transfer window Bobby Beaumont and Dan Flanders came in as defenders who have made a huge difference alongside the ever-reliant Ben Lockley to help reduce the number of goals we were conceding. Alfie Vaughan was moved to a centre-forward role with Owen Davies moving outside and this has helped results

Our best display of the season I felt was the 5-0 demolition of Buckley on their home ground. On a poor pitch we simply ran the show and went in 4-0 up at half time with Nathan Brown scoring one of the goals of the season with a volley from 20 yards Recent wins over Penrhyncoch, Prestatyn and Bangor have helped consolidate our position and it must be remembered that we have a really young squad with the average of the squad being just 22

Having exited the Nathaniel Cup and Welsh Blood League Cup in the first round, it was a welcome run in the JD Welsh Cup that gave us some great games and the atmosphere here at the Quarter Final against Llanelli was something else. To lose 1-0 with the last kick of the game was gutting but what an accomplishment to get this far – the furthest Denbigh have ever reached in this competition

Thanks for all your support this season Let’s hope we finish our season here with a win this evening

BRAVE TOWN IN NARROW LOSS AT COLWYN BAY

Colwyn Bay 1-0 Denbigh Town

When you go to the 26-game unbeaten league leaders who last tasted defeat in the Cymru North back in July, it’s always a tough ask.

But Friday night Dewi Llion’s side fought bravely against the champions-elect in a narrow defeat that Denbigh can be proud of, and that those in attendance will feel they could easily have taken something from it

Dan Atkins’ first half strike proved to be the difference but Town gave as good as they’ve got in a hugely positive performance at the 4 Crosses Arena

Denbigh made two changes to the side that beat Bangor six days previous with Iwan Roberts coming into the side and Keelan Williams starting for the first time since returning from surgery

Colwyn Bay started the game the strongest carving out a chance after just three minutes when a free-kick was launched into the Denbigh box and headed back across before Elijah Beattie was called into a save at close range.

Denbigh couldn’t seem to get out of their own half in the opening 15 minutes but did well to weather the storm, though the home side could well have been in front on 17 minutes when they broke forward before a ball across to Craig Lindfield was fired somehow wide with freedom of the penalty area

Town’s first chance came six minutes later when a good ball from Sion Jones found Nathan Brown who touched it out to Owen Davies whose effort deflected and almost looped over the goalkeeper Less than a minute later the Bay threat was evident when Tom Creamer volleyed the ball inches wide from 18-yards out.

Iwan Roberts was lively for Town and drove forward just before the half hour mark and switched the ball to Alfie Vaughan who layed it up to Davies who this time couldn’t keep his effort down

However, after a barrage of pressure this time the ball did find the net but at the other end. A nice break from Colwyn Bay saw Ethan Roberts’ low cross met by Atkins who made no mistake in the box

Denbigh continued to respond well though with a nice move leading to Sion Jones from an angle smashing the ball over from six yards out, in a half where Denbigh gradually grew into the game

Within a minute of the restart Denbigh put the pressure on with Vaughan almost drawing his side level. The forward pounced on a mistake at the back before running through and lifting the ball over the bar one on one

Four minutes later Davies did well on the left before cutting inside and unleashing a shot, but the keeper was more than a match

Just after the hour mark the home side almost doubled their advantage when Atkins’ bicycle kick was brilliantly denied by Beattie Denbigh continued to search for the leveller when Jones fed a through ball to Vaughan who beat the keeper to it before the recovering defenders positioned themselves well and Vaughan couldn’t find the target.

Denbigh pushed further, winning a corner late on where keeper Beattie came up, but they couldn’t find that all important goal and Colwyn Bay took the points as Town’s five game unbeaten streak came to an end

Denbigh Town: Beattie, Flanders, Lockley, Beaumont, Williams, K Roberts, S Jones, Brown, I Roberts, Davies, Vaughan

Subs: Wilmot, Cooke, Butler, Pownall, Duffy

Referee: Mark James

Attendance: 824

POTM: Iwan Roberts - Grew really well into the game, looked lively throughout and caused issues going forward.

DENBIGH TOWN RESERVES

Denbigh Town Reserves exited the FAW Reserve League North Cup on Tuesday night in dramatic fashion when coming off second best in a shoot-out.

Serhad Kanli had given his side the lead before Holywell hit back twice in both halves before a dramatic equaliser from Morgan Fricker in stoppage time

However, the visitors’ keeper Kieron Feenan was the hero with two penalty saves to see the Wellmen through to the final four.

Town began the game on top and within five minutes had a great chance with Ianto Jones crossing from the right where he found Kanli who attempted to round the keeper, but gave just enough time for a defender to recover and intercept his effort before Tom Salisbury’s follow-up was saved

Six minutes later Town came agonisingly close when Cai Frith layed the ball back to Fricker wide left where his cross looped over everyone to rattle the crossbar

Finally though on 22 minutes, Denbigh did have a deserved lead when a superb sprint forward from Salisbury took him left of the box before his cross was headed home by Kanli from close range.

In search of a second a neat move from a dead ball almost saw the second come A quick-thinking free kick from Fricker found Salisbury on the left of the box only for a horrific bobble to see him sky his effort over the bar

Despite finding life difficult to open the game Holywell fought back and levelled in style on 36 minutes The ball dropped to Caelan McGovern who lashed it home from the edge of the box to make it one apiece.

The second half was far more goal-shy than the first with neither side really creating anything until the final 20 minutes Denbigh won a freekick on the edge of the box which Salisbury struck just over before six minutes later substitute Sam Luke squared the ball to Salisbury who had his shot from 12-yards saved before the keeper also denied Frith’s followup.

With ten minutes to go it looked as if Holywell would be the side through when their own pressure was rewarded when a set piece routine of their own found McGovern who found the net from the left of the box A minute later with Town now trailing Frith crossed for Luke, the ball was half cleared as far as Joe Mead who from distance lashed a thunderbolt at goal which whizzed agonisingly wide

However, with Town desperately seeking a leveller a set piece gave them hope. Mead’s effort was spilled by the keeper and nudged towards Fricker by substitute Harry Nash with the former stabbing home to send the game to penalties on 90 minutes

In the shoot-out, Holywell made no mistake and with Fricker and Mead’s efforts saved it looked bleak. Salisbury had his initial effort saved but the keeper was off his line, and the 17-year old made no mistake from his second. But with the visitors dispatching all of their efforts, Gabriel Hinchcliffe missed the target and Town exited the competition Town are next

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1876 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.

The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.

The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s

Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles

After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years

The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.

In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.

Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

WE’VE MET BEFORE

Denbigh Town and Llay Miners Welfare have a storied history in the past couple of seasons Here we look back at our first league meeting of this campaign and the last clash we had at Central Park

Llay Welfare 3-2 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North30/11/2024)

Denbigh Town’s curse at the Ring continued in November as the club await a decades long wait for a win away at Llay Welfare.

Sam John opened the scoring for the home side on 7 minutes before Jonathan Collo missed from the spot eight minutes later A quickfire double from Owen Davies and Iwan Roberts turned the game on it’s head at Town led at the break

Despite this, Llay fought back wirth Collo netting four minutes in the second half before Harvey Ellis’ penalty on 67 minutes won the game for Llay

Denbigh Town: A Jones, Williams, Cooke, B Lockley, Vaughan, K Roberts, S Jones, I Roberts, Brown, Duffy, Davies

TOP 5 GAMES OF 2024/25

Though we do have two games to spare, here we take a look at the season as we enter the very final stages.

Buckley Town 0-5 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North - 01/03/25)

Result of the season? Denbigh Town smashed Buckley at the Globe at the beginning of March as Town took three points home from Flintshire. Nathan Brown grabbed the opener with a possible goal of the season 29 minutes before Bobby Beaumont doubled the lead two minutes later. Alfie Vaughan and Sam Duffy netted in the final moments of the half before Vaughan scored again in stoppage time to round off the rout

Denbigh Town 7-1 Llanuwchllyn (JD Welsh Cup - 14/12/24)

Town made history in December with the 7-1 thumping of Llanuwchllyn to reach the Quarter-Final of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time. Hatricks from Nathan Brown and Owen Davies along with Iwan Roberts’ penalty saw Dewi Llion’s side through.

Denbigh Town 6-2 Llandudno (JD Cymru North - 25/10/24)

Denbigh made it five unbeaten in some style back in October with a 6-2 win over Llandudno. Ben Lockley opened the scoring on three minutes before Harvey Bennett’s equaliser. Keelan Williams nudged us back in front before Nathan Brown made it three Levi Montogmery pulled one back but Brown and Williams both hit their second of the game The moment of the game came when 16-year old Tom Salisbury raced through for his first goal for the club to a huge ovation.

Bangor 1876 3-4 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North

- 11/10/24)

A dramatic late winner between two sides who’ve had plenty of competition in the last two years. Town took an early two goal lead via Nathan Brown and Owen Davies before being pegged back Paul Fleming restored the lead before another equaliser and in stoppage time Harrison Bellis turned the ball home to win it at the death. It was Denbigh’s first-ever win over Bangor at Nantporth.

Holywell Town 0-2 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru

North - 28/09/24)

Town had to wait two months for their first away win of the campaign and it came at the league champions. Owen Davies grabbed the first after less than a minute before at the other end of the match Sam Duffy finished brilliantly to ensure a huge three points for Dewi Llion’s men

THANK YOU FROM THE EDITOR

It’s fair to say the 2024/25 campaign will live long in the memory of all of us.

From the historic cup run to some outstanding league victories, we’ve witnessed yet another superb campaign at Central Park as Dewi, his coaching staff and the squad continue to build a strong foundation

When you have a season like this, it’s much easier and far more enjoyable to cover, and whilst there have been disappointments along the way - most of which came in stoppage time - overall most of us following this great club will be satisfied with a positive campaign.

When it comes to coverage of the club things have never been better. The content produced has led to interest and reporting from a number of external news outlets and online platforms and this season that’s only grown further

We couldn’t do this without our incredible volunteers and I’d like to thank our photographers Roy Gunther and Lisi Jones for their exceptional work this season Simply put, without them we’d not have half of the amount of exposure Roy has been a stalwart at the club, sitting in the wind and rain grabbing the action for us and many of the extraordinary memories of recent years have been captured through his lens.

Meanwhile, Lisi began with us this season and has blown us away with her work. To be able to produce what she does at such a young age is amazing, and to see her progress from the summer to now makes us all immensely proud The players, staff and supporters appreciate everything both Roy and Lisi do

Of course, without the player’s and management's engagement, we’d not have much to go on, their work on the pitch speaks for itself whilst off it, their willingness to put up with a camera in their faces now and again and provide content for the club when needed has also made a difference, something I’m sure our supporters appreciate.

Talking of supporters we’d like to thank each and every one of you for watching, reading or sharing our content this season. The club’s fanbase has grown really well in recent seasons and to be able to bring you new content every week is a pleasure for all of us.

This is the last programme of the season so for everyone who has read it in print or online, thank you It takes a lot of work to put together, and wouldn’t be possible without the likes of Iwan Jones, Jen Lawson and Adam Jones who help put it together

We look forward now to the rest of the season and the summer where we’ll have more content than ever. Keep an eye out on social media, in the press and on the website for the latest news.

Thanks again, see you next season!

UNDER 13'S BRING THE LEAGUE

TITLE

TO CENTRAL PARK

Denbigh Town Under-13s marked a memorable season recently when they were crowned Champions of the Rhyl & District League.

In a sensational campaign, the Young Reds won 15 of their 18 games this season losing just once as they romped home to take the honours, winning the title by nine points of runners-up Prestatyn Athletic Rangers.

Goals were never hard to come by for the side, especially with the league’s top scorer Riley-Jay Gallagher finding the back of the net 30 times in his 18 league games whilst also providing 17 assists. Connor Hayes wasn’t far behind him with 22 in the league whilst Tom Roberts netted 13 himself Even goalkeeper George Allsopp got involved with eight assists and two goals from the penalty spot!

The side lifted the trophy before our last home game and led the first-team out on to the pitch before our 2-1 win over Bangor 1876, parading their silverware to those in attendance.

It wasn’t just in the league that Town performed well, with Denbigh reaching the Quarter-Final of the North Wales Coast Cup before exiting to finalists Llandudno.

With another three seasons left in junior football, this young team will look to continue their development with the club before graduating to the senior team, with the likes of Tom Salisbury and Serhad Kanli making their first-team debuts and even more featuring for the Reserves this season after coming through the junior ranks.
