Burgess, an esteemed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon producer for 50 years, is the culmination of 150 years of farming tradition on the vertiginous slopes of Howell Mountain.

the historic Stag’s Leap and Grgich wineries, Warren Winiarski and Mike Grgich each learned their trades at the Estate.
When Tom Burgess arrived in the Napa Valley, he began a quest to find the perfect vineyard site to yield the cabernet sauvignon wine he loved. Burgess acquired the Souverain estate and hired Bill Sorenson as his chief winemaker, a role he held for 41 vintages; one of the longest tenures in the history of the Napa Valley.
Tom Burgess established Burgess Cellars in 1972 at the base of Howell Mountain, where the first planting of the rugged and steep Sorenson Vineyard was cultivated in 1870. Lee Stewart later planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah grapes on Howell Mountain’s steep hillsides, naming his winery Souverain. Subsequent Napa Valley greats also tended the land; before starting
In 2020 the Burgess family passed the baton to Gaylon Lawrence, Jr., upholding a 150-year tradition of family ownership. Gaylon entrusted the legacy of the Howell Mountain vineyard to winemaker, Meghan Zobeck to honor the heritage of the Napa Valley through regenerative farming practices that will preserve the health of the vines and the “magic” of the wine from generation to generation.
From the Swiss-Italian ancestors who first planted the Sorenson Vineyard to the present day, the estate strives to produce wines of elegance and finesse that honor its deep roots in the Napa Valley.
2016 Sorenson’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
NAPA
VALLEYFirst planted in 1872 by Swiss-Italian immigrants and named after Bill Sorenson, one of the longest working winemakers in Napa Valley history who completed 41 consecutive vintages at Burgess.

The Sorenson vineyard is the beating heart of the Burgess estate. Connecting past to present, this vineyard is carved into the western-facing slopes overlooking Napa Valley and surrounded by pines and redwoods.
Produced from the oldest vines in our Sorenson Vineyard, this Cabernet Sauvignon had a nearperfect growing season. Flavors of caramelized blackberry and dried black plums are complemented by earthy aromas of cedar, baking spices, and savory aromatics of rosemary, thyme, and a subtle dash of mint.

A unique collaboration between Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. and Winemaker Nico Cueva, Haynes is a historic vineyard producing wines with a sense of place that tell the story of the land. Focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Haynes Vineyard wines are made from vines planted in 1968 in the heart of the Coombsville AVA.
The historic Haynes Vineyard, originally purchased by James Whitford from Nathan Coombs in 1866, is comprised of a 43-acre parcel and includes 27 acres planted to vine. A lower elevation site with a sightline to the San Pablo Bay, this microclimate is distinguished by cooler temperatures, with winds and marine fog often billowing through and lingering amongst the rows of vines. One of Napa Valley’s most treasured sites capable of producing wines of generous structure with fresh acidity and minerality, the vineyard designate wines enclosed here are made with intent, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between the prehistoric oceanic soils of Coombsville and the decades-old vines firmly rooted there.
Cueva sat down with James Suckling to discuss "about the uniqueness of making wines in Coombsville and how their latest chardonnays turned out." View the conversation and tasting here.

"I remember vividly the first time I walked the Haynes Vineyard. With it’s 60 -year-old gnarly vines and rocky soils, it had an immediate impact. Now, four years later our team is releasing our first wines from this noble site."

Family owned since its founding in 1961, Heitz Cellar’s legacy runs deep. It is widely considered a winery legend, having played a major role in shaping the history of Napa Valley winemaking. In the late 1950’s, pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally celebrated wines, including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. Sixty years of the Heitz family’s dedication to viticulture, stewardship, and classic winemaking have maintained the winery’s notoriety as a benchmark amongst its peers in California and Europe.
In April 2018, Heitz Cellar entered an exciting new chapter as this rich legacy was passed into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. The wines are
made with an unwavering dedication to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, and a responsibility to the sustainability of Napa Valley.
This allows an incredible breadth of diversity in terroir, and the ability to craft wines that are a pure representation of place. Within the estate’s iconic stone cellar lie library vintages that are a testament to the aging ability of Heitz Cellar's signature style of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Heitz Cellar features prized estate vineyards planted in six of Napa Valley’s sub-appellations: Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Howell Mountain, Oak Knoll District, and Calistoga.
Legacy Offer
This fall, we’re proud to present a Legacy Collection from Heitz Cellar, showcasing exceptional library wines in a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the history of Napa Valley. Featuring vintages stretching

2003 Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon RUTHERFORD
The Trailside Vineyard is located at the base of the Vaca Mountain range along the eastern edge of Rutherford, and has been farmed organically by Heitz Cellar since 1984 .
As the Conn Creek shifted over millennia, it deposited a mosaic of diverse soils, contributing to the distinct terroir. The Trailside Vineyard is nestled between Silverado Trail and Conn Creek on the fertile, eastern side of the Rutherford appellation. Heitz Cellar incorporated the vineyard into its estate in 1984, and it has been a vital part of their program since. The 2003 vintage is known for its richness and concentration, and is drinking beautifully as it enters its second decade.

While many who visit the Napa Valley come to know the tapestry of vineyards and villages cradled between the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountains, few have an opportunity to explore the rugged hills and forested peaks of Howell Mountain.
It is there, on the precipitous slopes of Howell Mountain, that Ink Grade Estate has clung since 1873. Ascending to an elevation of 2,200 feet, the climb to Ink Grade is a feat unto itself. Early pioneers of the Napa Valley established ranches on the remote eastern side of Howell Mountain in the mid 1800’s. The vineyards here contain a unique energy — bound in layers of volcanic soil, latent and patiently waiting to be discovered, it is a terroir capable of producing concentrated, distinct wines.
There is incredible potential in this lofty site blanketed by 30-year-old vines grasping onto volcanic tufa soils. The site exemplifies what makes Howell Mountain so special, with nearly every aspect and angle that one vineyard can possess displayed in a plethora of unique and dynamic
parcels. This unique setting, with its wild nature, makes it possible to create something truly rare.
Today, the Ink Grade Estate Vineyard lies in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA in Napa Valley. The vines are planted on narrow terraces of earth cut into steep slopes.
To do so takes patience, reverence, and care: allowing the fruit to flourish through biodynamic farming, extended maceration, long élevage, and low intervention winemaking practices. Ink Grade Estate was recognized in 2023 as the largest Demeter Certified Biodynamic ranch in Napa County, with 220 acres under vine (of the 750 acre property) gaining certification in 2022

The intent is to capture the wild purity of the mountain and the structure of its rugged terrain in wines both elegant and robust.
2018 Andosol
NAPA VALLEY
The Andosol draws inspiration from the historic field blends of California. Each year this cuvée is crafted to best express the unique mountain terroir comprised of volcanic rock and ash formed in the Miocene era almost five million years ago.

Undoubtedly, this site and the inherent stress it lends to grape growing saturates the grapes with intensity and depth. A unique perspective of the Ink Grade Estate, this polished and bold wine is meant to be enjoyed in its youth but will also age incredibly well.

The Grand Reserve cuvée is a sparkling Blanc de Blanc traditional method consisting of 100 % Chardonnay, crafted with the influence of Rodolphe Péters. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% Reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests, and blends various terroirs from the Sta Rita Hills.
In 1943, Fred McCrea and his wife, Eleanor, stumbled onto a 168-acre plot of land hidden away on the slopes of Spring Mountain, which they purchased and later named Stony Hill Vineyard. With their love for French white wines combined with the ideal growing conditions of their property, the McCreas built the first post-prohibition winery in 1951 and released their inaugural vintage the following year. Stony Hill’s terroir and climate mirrored that of Burgundy, made of volcanic mountain soil with a limestone sub-layer and a northeast-facing hillside, making it perfect to craft their preferred style of Chardonnay. Some would later refer to Stony Hill as “America’s greatest white wine estate.”

Over the years, the McCreas planted more European white varietals including Pinot Blanc, Johannesburg Riesling and later Gewurztraminer and Semillon. It wasn’t until 2009 that Stony Hill began producing red wine made of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
In 2020 the Lawrence Family became the next family to own the historic estate. Under the watchful eye of managing partner, Carlton McCoy Jr., Stony Hill has taken careful steps to preserve its legacy in the Napa Valley, keeping the integrity of the land and winemaking style intact. The estate vineyards continue to be farmed organically and focus on sustainable vineyard cultivation, while careful attention is put forth to honor the past and embrace the future of Stony Hill.

Select Offerings From France

Domaine Roc de l’Abbaye is located in Saint-Satur, a village in the heart of Sancerre with winegrowing origins dating back to the 11th century. Saint-Satur is famous for its ancient abbey and its Silex (flint) terroir on the hillsides bordering the Loire river.

The domaine has been helmed by the Mollet family for several generations. Winemaker Florian Mollet has been managing it since 2000, building a modern cellar and expanding the family estate to 42 acres. Each parcel is vinified separately in small stainless steel tanks to maintain site specificity. The domaine holds 12 parcels total in Sancerre, with 24 acres of Sauvignon Blanc and nearly 4 acres of Pinot Noir. Their parcels in PouillyFumé are made up of nearly 15 acres of Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are fresh, textured and refined, with a distinct minerality that is indicative of the soil.

Silex is a coveted soil type, found in only 15 % of the vineyards in Sancerre, that produces wines with brilliant minerality, acidity and precision with trademark smoky notes.

POUILLY-FUMÉ AOC
This wine is made from a blend of 4 parcels in the village of Boisgibault and Tracy-sur-Loire, which is where the Mollet family is originally from.

Vintage Report 2019

2019 was a vintage of extremes with frost in May and heat waves during harvest. Rain and cool, damp weather during flowering led to millerandage. As a result, yields were lower than average, down 20%.
Summer drought and severe heat led to concentration in both flavor and acid in the berries, which ultimately delivered complex, rich and flavorful wines with good acidity.

Vaillons takes its name from the Latin “vallis,” which means little valley.
François Legras was born into a family with four centuries of grape growing experience in Chouilly and by age 16 was learning the skills of vine-grower and cellar-master from his father. Together with Brigitte Legras, née Haas, Champagne Legras & Haas was established in 1991, and today is run by their three sons, Olivier, Rémi and Jérôme.
Chouilly is the northern-most Grand Cru village in the Côte des Blancs, whose coveted vineyards produce the finest Champagnes. The Legras-Haas family cultivates 18 hectares of vines, comprised of 35 parcels, throughout the village of Chouilly, which offers an extraordinary diversity of chardonnay styles. The family owns additional vineyard properties in Vitry (southeast of Côte des Blancs) and Les Riceys in the Côte des Bar. In total the family farms almost 37 hectares in these outstanding terroirs.
For their compelling and lauded blends tier, including Intuition Brut, Brut Rosé and Exigence, the family uses both estate and fruit purchased from long-time partners in Aÿ and Leuvrigny.
The Legras family act as stewards of their vines, respecting and maintaining the ecosystem so together they may deliver dynamic wines that are aromatic, graceful and approachable in their youth and retain poise and freshness while developing complexity and depth with age.

All the Legras & Haas Blanc de Blancs wines from the non-vintage Brut to the vintage single-vineyard Les Sillons are 100 % estate-grown.
Vintage Overview
2015
In 2015, spring felt like summer and summer was one of the hottest and driest on record. As a result, grape development slowed, yields declined and flavors concentrated. Harvest started September 7 and the musts showed a prominent and exotic aromatic profile: ripe lemon and very unique hints of physalis (golden berry).
This tropical character is unusual in Chouilly and it is supported by savory and saline notes, which give this vintage impressive balance and poise. In its slow evolution from beautiful juice to finished wine, vintage 2015 gained complexity, while the exotic aromas and typical freshness remain.
2015 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millésime Brut CHAMPAGNE

A Legras and Haas vintage reflects both the year and the place as it’s a single cru, estate-grown wine. To become a vintage wine, the year must deliver a certain austerity that promises aging potential and a touch of originality, an unusual character that makes it exceptional. While a millésime may come from any of the family’s parcels, most often it is largely comprised of grapes from their plots around Mont Aigu, which has an older chalk layer and delivers intensity, elegance, freshness and minerality in the finished wine.

2015 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Sillons Brut CHAMPAGNE
Les Sillons is the Legras brothers first single-vineyard project and the result of two decades of research in a single plot in northwest Chouilly, Derrière Partelaine. The name Les Sillons is a nod to the beauty of the land, as well as the hard work and perseverance in the vineyards. This wine is fully fermented and aged in 20 hectoliter oak foudre before secondary fermentation in bottle. The oak aging provides approachability in youth and complexity over time. Its incredible freshness, saline texture and austere structure promise an unforgettable tasting experience filled with emotions, intensity and honesty; a rarity.

Select Offerings From Italy

Leading the portfolio today are the Marchesi Mazzei, brothers Francesco and Filippo, as well as Filippo’s son Giovanni, the 25th generation. While the family has always honored their legacy, producing acclaimed wines from their estate vineyards in Chianti Classico,

the current generation has also expanded their holdings across Italy. The Belguardo wine estate in Maremma provides exciting expressions of both indigenous and international varietals, while Zisola in Sicily spotlights the rich heritage of the land and the potential of Nero d’Avola. Villa Marcello in Veneto, helmed by Giovanni Mazzei, is an ode to tradition and innovation in Prosecco. All of the estates are farmed with a commitment to reducing environmental impact and fostering sustainability. This balance of preservation and evolution is rooted in the Castello di Fonterutoli, the historic family seat.

Established in 1435 , the Mazzei family is one of Tuscany’s oldest wine dynasties, having cultivated vineyards and crafted fine wine for over 6 00 years in Fonterutoli in the heart of Chianti Classico.
The Gran Selezione designation is for Chianti Classico’s finest wines, which must be made from 100 % estate grapes with minimum 30 months aging (at least 3 in bottle).

The Mazzei family vineyards cover three adjoining Chianti Classico municipalities: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti.
Each of their three Gran Selezione wines are sourced from one of these zones and exemplifies the best of its region.

Badiòla delivers elegance and freshness as its vineyard is among the highest in altitude in Chianti Classico and enjoys the cool air currents that are particular to the Radda in Chianti zone.

Cà Romé is a true family winery, nestled in the heart of Barbaresco. It was founded by Romano Marengo in 1980 after a 30-year career in the wine industry, during which he dreamed of making his own terroirdriven wines. Today it is run by Romano’s children, Winemaker Giuseppe Marengo and Director of Operations, Paola Marengo.
are matured in a mixture of Slavonian oak casks and barriques of varying sizes to emphasize balance in oak, fruit, and intensity. The rich body and firm tannins benefit from long bottle aging and will continue to develop for decades to come.

As winemaker, Giuseppe upholds his father’s use of traditional methods with long fermentations to bring out the fruit’s natural properties. The wines
Cà Romé’s estate vineyards consist of three sites in Barbaresco and two vineyards in Serralunga D’Alba, which were inherited from Giuseppe’s grandmother, Maria di Brün. The Barbaresco vineyards are rich in marl soils that date back to the Tortonian-Messinian period, with a variety of mineral components that translate into the wines. The Serralunga D’Alba properties are also heavy in blue marl and are some of the oldest soils in Barolo. These two historic sites produce world-class, terroir-driven Barbaresco and Barolo wines that have quickly gained critical acclaim and a global reputation for excellence.
The Cà Romé philosophy is reflected in the name: Cà is short for casa, which means “home” and refers to Romano’s home and a winery that is run by a family, not a corporation.
