People fly flags for a variety of reasons, including to show patriotism, celebrating national holidays, or expressing pride in their country or community. In this community, the Design Guidelines (page 22), provide detailed information on how to properly display flags
With Flag Day on June 14 and Independence Day on July 4, now is a great time to highlight some of the key rules about flag display.
• Flag size: 36 inches by 60 inches, maximum.
• Authorized flags are described in the Design Guidelines
• Flag Display guidelines are consistent with the Federal Flag Code (American Legion explains concisely)
o Flags should not be displayed when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.
o Flags should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, unless properly illuminated at night. Lighting needs to be at the top of the pole, directed downward and shielded so that homeowners continue to meet the Town of Marana low light requirements.
• DWDMCA Walls:
❖ There is 7.6 miles of perimeter walls
❖ 9 lots on Rim Trail have a boundary with the Tortolita Preserve, and have a wall of up to 35 feet high
o Arizona has a handy website to learn about halfstaff notifications and other flag facts
Just a friendly reminder that, due to the hotter weather temperatures, effective May 1 Complete Landscaping starts working at 6am for the safety of their employees.
• Happy Hour with the Cool Doctor Wednesday, June 18 from 4 – 7pm

Stretching seems a simple enough process, but according to Tennis MD expert Bob Donatelli, there is most definitely a right and wrong way to do it. And the possibilities of better performance are much higher when the correct approach is followed.
“Traditionally, athletes have used static stretching as a warm-up to get ready for their sports,” says Donatelli, a physical therapy expert based in Las Vegas, Nevada who has worked with a number of top touring tennis professionals. “That’s the traditional ‘hold-the-stretch’ routine. The thinking was that those sorts of exercises reduced injuries as they improved things like balance and performance. But the fact is, there is no evidence of those sorts of benefits. Actually, static stretching can actually reduce performance levels because elongated muscles are less capable of generating the same amount of force they were previously and produce less strength as a result.”
What is far better, Donatelli says, is so-called active stretching in which a person moves as he or she stretches. Getting on a treadmill for ten minutes before a game of tennis is an example of that. “Doing that increases your body temperature and consequently will help give you the range of motion and flexibility you need,” he explains. “It stimulates circulation to the muscle and warms it up.”
As far as active stretching is concerned, Donatelli prefers what he calls “marching types.” One of his favorites is straight leg marching, in which a person lifts his legs high as he or she walks, to loosen the hamstrings muscles in particular. Another is called the leg cradle, a sort of variation of that exercise that is geared to deal with the hips. Then, there is the lateral lunge, which is designed to stretch the inner thigh.
“There’s no doubt that these types of stretches are more beneficial to athletes than the static ones of old,” Donatelli concludes. “And they will make it easier for you to put forth your best effort.”

Hello Del Webb Dove Mountain! Pat Moran reporting from Puerto Vallarta on the beautiful Pacific Coast of Mexico.
Michael and I are adjusting to life in Mexico. Our condo is on a hillside, so the primary way to get here walking involves hiking up some pretty steep grades. Most all of the streets are made of cobblestones, so that’s an added bonus to test our balance! Considering both, we are getting more fit with all the walking!
We’ve not been out to see many sights because we’ve been busy with getting our condo decorated, dog walking and doing semi-weekly shopping trips for groceries and what-not. Many part-time expats (expatriots) from both the US and Canada have already left for the summer, so it has started to get a bit quieter around town, and especially in our neighborhood of 5 de Diciembre. The rainy season starts in June, so next time I write, I should have some spectacular lightning shots from our place.
While we’ve started meeting folks who live here, we DO miss our DWDM friends! If you’re headed this way, please let me know at ripley329@gmail.com – we’d love to see you!!
