According to the National Council on Aging, social isolation can increase an older adult’s risk for physical health issues, mental health challenges, as well as cognitive health decline. To increase healthy living and reduce your risk for social isolation, you may want to consider joining an interest group, volunteering in your local community, taking a class to learn a new skill, or attend a local community event.

The DWDM family is collecting personal care toiletry/hygiene items that will be shared with local charities. When traveling, pick up those travel size soaps, lotions, shampoos and more during your hotel stays. (New or unopened items only.)
These essential care items are greatly appreciated and will then be distributed to those in need here in Tucson, Sister Jose’s Homeless Shelter and the Poverello House (a men’s homeless shelter).
At the next dentist appointment, grab that toothbrush and toothpaste and donate those as well!
While at the store, see items on BOGO Sale and grab extra!
Thank you for your support. Barb Larkin at belarkin@msn.com
The white collection container is behind the bar/counter inside the Saguaro Center.
Empty Rx Pill Bottles are needed by the Primavera Foundation to be re-purposed for personal hygiene kits to the homeless and other vulnerable residents of Pima County.
Empty bottles are then filled with personal essentials such as:
• Shampoo
• Conditioner
• Hand & body lotion
• Liquid soap
Please bring your empty Rx pill bottles WITH THE LABELS OFF and drop in the plastic bin at the Saguaro Center.
Please note they can only use Rx bottles. Please NO Vitamin-Type Bottles.

Did you know that as we age, we experience a loss of muscle mass, strength, and function? The process typically begins after the age of 30 and accelerates with aging, especially after 60. This condition is called sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a significant contributor to frailty in older adults and is associated with an increased risk of falls, fractures, disability and a decreased quality of life. While we cannot stop sarcopenia from occurring, we can significantly slow the process and preserve muscle strength, function and overall quality of life through regular resistance training, proper nutrition and an active lifestyle.
Some symptoms of sarcopenia include:
• Muscle Weakness: A noticeable decrease in muscle strength, leading to difficulty in performing daily activities.
• Loss of Stamina: Reduced endurance and fatigue during physical activities.
• Decreased Muscle Mass: Visible reduction in muscle size and tone.
A certified fitness trainer or medical doctor may use several methods to diagnose sarcopenia. Common tests include grip strength, walking speed and chair stand tests to assess muscle function. More in-depth clinical techniques, such as MRI, CT scans, or DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), can measure muscle mass.
The number one tool for preventing and managing sarcopenia is strength training. Regular resistance exercises are the most effective way to maintain and build muscle mass and strength. And did you know it is NEVER too late to incorporate regular resistance training into your daily routine? Whether you’re in your late 40s, early 80s, or somewhere in between, starting a proper strength training regimen with professional guidance from a certified personal trainer or other health professional experienced in working with older adults will set you on the right path to staying ahead of the curve.
Protein intake is crucial for counteracting the effects of sarcopenia and maintaining muscle mass. General guidelines for older adults recommend consuming at least 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For example, an older adult weighing about 154 pounds should aim for 70-84 grams of protein per day. Active older adults, those recovering from illness, or those with chronic conditions may benefit from higher protein intake, up to 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram. In some cases, such as severe illness or significant muscle loss, intake might be recommended as high as 1.6 grams per kilogram. Protein intake should be distributed evenly throughout the day, with protein included in each meal.
Another great way to complement your strength training routine in managing or preventing sarcopenia is to stay active with aerobic exercises, flexibility and mobility training and balance exercises
In some cases, hormone replacement therapy or medications may be considered, though these are generally secondary to lifestyle changes.
While sarcopenia is a natural part of aging, it doesn’t have to take over and limit our ability to live a healthy, happy and active lifestyle throughout our lives. We all have the option to go out strong; we just need to make a few lifestyle changes that can significantly impact how we function day to day. Which do you choose? Feeling weak, tired, and afraid of falling, or feeling strong, energetic, positive and confident in doing all the things you want to do? If you choose the latter, start by contacting a certified fitness trainer to get guidance on what to do first. Taking the first step is often the hardest, but it’s well worth the effort to ensure you’re on your way to aging well.
