The lease for our Fitness Center cardio equipment expires in February of 2024. Consequently, Barb Truman, Lifestyle Director invited 6 DWDM residents to participate in a focus group tasked with developing purchase and lease recommendations for approval and inclusion in our 2024 budget.

The group members are Adrienne Quinn, Barbara Truman, Dave Moilanen, Deborah Curran, Julia Darrah, Kathy Weaver and Lloyd Kirsch.

If you're wondering what's included in the cardio equipment, it's the ellipticals, treadmills, bikes, adaptive motion trainer (AMT), rower and the recumbent stepper (SciFit). Other than the spin bike, all of this equipment is currently leased.

Objectives for the Focus Group:

• Develop and execute a community-wide survey with the help of our ComCom committee member, Kim Dwyer.

• Update our community on group tasks and progress through articles like this one, in our monthly newsletter.

• Review usage data for our current equipment and existing lease and maintenance contracts.

• Interview a targeted list of possible vendors to solicit input on our options, including machine types, lease vs. purchase considerations, and their customer support services.

• Based on the interviews and the survey results, develop an equipment list and obtain proposals from selected vendors.

• Timing considerations:

o The survey link will be distributed to the community after Labor Day with your completion requested within 5 days. (It will only take a few minutes to complete.)

o Recommendations from the Focus Group are due to the Finance Committee and Board for inclusion in our 2024 budget.

Wondering what you can do to help?

• Look for the survey in your inbox shortly and complete promptly. It's designed to collect your input whether you use the gym or not.

• If you aren't currently using our gym let us know why. This is your chance to express your wishes and needs.

• If you have ideas about the type of equipment you'd like to see in the gym or any issues you've experienced, the survey is designed to collect this information as well.

Need help on low volleys? Bend Like a Skateboarder

At the net, do you hit weak pop-up volleys when the ball comes low to your feet? If so, you’re probably bending only at the waist to reach the ball. That type of stiff bending doesn’t allow you to move or react quickly enough to return lowballs. As a result, you drop the racket head and hit a weak, off-balance, pop-up volley instead of a solid, penetrating one.

Anyone who is into skateboarding knows that the way to stay balanced is to keep the body's center of gravity low by bending at the knees and the waist. Use this technique when you hit low volleys in tennis.

Bend at the knees and waist and keep your racket head level with your hand. Your volleys and overall net game will go on a roll!

Are Your Agave Cati Looking Like This?

If you have noticed changes in your agave, it may not just be heat related. Many homeowners have reported the loss of their cacti due to either improper irrigation or insect infestation. Some of the most common insect infestations include snout weevils, mealybugs and scale insects. If your agave is looking a little droopy, you may want to look for these common issues for an attempt at revival. If caught early enough the plant will have the best chance at survival.

After a very successful Art & Crafts Fair last year with over 400 visitors, we're excited to announce our planning for the 2023 Fair!

This year we have moved the event to Sunday, Nov. 12. We don't want to interfere with the Veteran's Day activities on the Saturday before. The hours will remain the same 9:30am-2:00pm.

Due to the limitations we found in providing equitable areas for everyone last year, we will also use the aerobics room in the Saguaro Center this year. We have 32 booth/table locations.

Diane Seltzer has done an excellent job of measuring and mapping out the booth spaces and assigning locations and tables. We considered everyone who participated last year, along with anyone who has currently contacted us. We still have 7 spaces available.

Contact Diane Seltzer, deseltzer@gmail.com with your requests and questions.

During September and October, the Gallery Wall in the Saguaro Center will feature Art & Crafts Fair participants.

If you are interested in the Gallery Wall Display schedule, click here.

If you are interested in participating in a future display, contact Kathy Weaver, abqkathy@catsiii.com.
