Various majors, different ages, different backgrounds. What do these ladies have in common? They love helping horses! While they were here, the Towson Equestrian Club worked tirelessly to decontaminate our trailer and all its components from our lice-infested 13 horses we welcomed in March!
Thanks SO much ladies!

Top Gun is lovingly nicknamed ‘Topper’ or ‘Mr. Top’ in the barn. Topper came to DEFHR last summer after being abandoned by his owner and left unwanted at a boarding facility. Recently finishing our rehabilitation program, Topper just started into training! This handsome boy makes quite the impression on everyone he meets! Topper has shown our trainers that he knows his stuff and simply needs time to build his fitness back up. Topper has the cutest expression and kindest personality… His trainer says that he is just perfect in every way! Once this older gentleman (he is around 20 years old) goes up for adoption, we know someone is going to snatch him up really quick. Fun fact: Topper LOVES to have his belly scratched!

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?
I don't remember the exact date, but it's been almost a year!
Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?
RODGERS! To me personally, he's the cutest horse in the field; he's also the sweetest. It's a fact. He's the sweetest in the field. (That's him and I, above).
I was just standing/sitting somewhere in my room, and my mom came up to me and said "There's this farm that you can volunteer at, and they have horses and other cool stuff." And when she said horses, I excitedly said "Yes! I love horses!" This love comes from years of my mom taking me on vacation to Chincoteague Island and getting to see all the wild ponies - it created a strong love and interest for horses.
My mom found the orientation information online, we attended, and the rest is history.
Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it?
If you count "horse riding," then kind of. But before volunteering here? Not really, no.
Probably going out and like having to go out in the gator and help barn staff blanket horses that need it, or going out and helping barn staff do the extra feedings for the mares at noon and 4 PM.
Cleaning mini (pony paddock) water with Julianna!
In March, DEFHR welcomed its newest staff to fill the role of Facilities Manager! As soon as he completes the cottage, he, along with his partner Lauren, and son Atlas will be moving onto the farm!
His office is in the Volunteer Lounge alongside Mattie, so if you haven't already, stop by and say hello!
Areas where DEFHR could use some extra assistance.
Do you love to share your passion for DEFHR with anyone who will listen? We have a great need for volunteers to assist with booths for fairs, Expos, Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and more! Booths play a vital role in bringing in more volunteer and donation support, as well as educating about our mission throughout our community. If you are interested, we would love to talk with you further about becoming a part of the Booth Volunteer team!
If you'd like a unique way to get involved with more horses that DEFHR assists, consider becoming a METS Volunteer. You would be attending assessment appointments with a DEFHR staff member to help gather the info needed to list a horse in need of a home. Volunteers are responsible for clear note-taking and possible videography on a standard smart phone. No horse experience required, but must be over 18 years of age due to assisting off-site at non-DEFHR locations.
Visitors love to learn about what we do and see it in action when they come to DEFHR. If you have a good foundation of knowledge about what we do, we'd love your help with pop-in tours. Our greatest need is currently on weekends.
Our Spring interns need a ride to BWI on the following dates and times:
Julissa: Needs to depart for BWI no later than 10 AM on Sunday, April 30th
Rebecca: Needs to depart for BWI no later than 5:30 PM on Sunday, April 30th
We're seeking volunteers who want to become leaders by helping us to train our incoming volunteers. If you are at least 14 years old and wellestablished in assisting in the barn, reach out and become a HOHO leader today!
All HOHO Trainings are held from 10am-12:30pm.

We need help with making sure volunteer groups have a fun, educational and safe time when they visit our farm to help out. If you're interested helping to ensure volunteer groups have an amazing experience at DEFHR, let us know!
Every Tuesday in April (14th, 21st, 28th) from 9:45-11:45am.
Linwood Center brings out 2-6 students with their assigned social worker to help with menial tasks around the farm (sweeping, organizing, cleaning stall fronts in main barn, leveling and sweeping feed stations, etc)
Paperwork abounds in our office! Our office staff are looking for any volunteers who are interested in data entry and paperwork management to assist with Office clerical work! If you're interested in joining our office team, please email our office manager, Sarah Thumma at sarah@defhr.org to arrange time(s) you can come out!
Do you have a talent for design? Experience with Adobe InDesign projects? Our development department is looking for a flexible, outside-the-box thinking graphic designer who can help us with some of our marketing pieces. Email development@dehfr.org if you are able to help!
Scout Days consist of up to 75 Scouts visiting the farm for two hours, during which they rotate through five stations; educational talk, tour, grooming, riding demo, leading. We are in need of a number of volunteers to assist with these stations and ensure the safetyandenjoymentofallparticipating!

We've been seeing a lot of new horses recently here at Days End. That means that not only are our new friends in quarantine, but the zones that they live in are under quarantine as well!
Everything they touch for the first 14 days must be decontaminated and cleaned before it can be used again. If you're interested in helping out with Quarantine zones and decontaminating these zones to help Days End open that space up for general use again, come on out to this training!
On Friday, April 28th, we'll be doing an entire mock-up quarantine setup and tear down to prepare you for entering the real zone! Come on out and solidify your Lysol-scented de-con skills!

AmazonSmile is Amazon’s charitable giving program through which a portion of certain purchases can be donated to the purchaser’s designated charity. Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, DEFHR has benefitted from this program for years. As you might have already heard, Amazon discontinued the AmazonSmile program on February 20, 2023 in order to narrow the focus of their impact. The good news is that DEFHR will continue to receive donations through the close of the program and we will still maintain our Amazon Wishlist. Amazon will also make a final one-time donation equal to three months of what we earned in 2022. If you have been an AmazonSmile supporter, we thank you and invite you to consider other ways you can support DEFHR through your purchases.
