HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Zesty Zelda

Zesty Zelda is a striking mare with a kind personality and solid under saddle. She comes in nicely from the field and stands tied while you groom and tack her up. She’s just easy to work around. She recently went off-site to see how she trailered and responded to being in a new environment. She settled in great and acted like she acted at home and even led most of the trail ride. She was brave and thoughtful on the trails. She wasn’t super keen on getting wet in the stream crossing but perhaps the water’s getting cold now? She did oblige us and dipped her toes in for a few minutes but would rather stand on dry land.

Zelda’s been ridden English and western and has done basic groundwork. She’s very polite and responsive on the ground. She is very comfortable to ride with lovely brakes and a soft back up. She has a big trot being a lovely Standardbred but she’s kind about it if you lose your balance and timing! She’s not super fit or balanced to do a ton of circles but with time she should be able to navigate them with ease.

She is polite and happy to be in a stall for feed time and grooming but currently lives out 24/7 with a small herd of mares. She is barefoot and in great shape for a 20 year old!

She was definitely a rock solid citizen on the trail so that’s probably what she would prefer to do.

Zelda just went up for adoption and has already received a lot of interest! Hoping this lovely mare finds her new person soon!

Volunteer Spotlight

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?

January of 2022, I think.

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?

Not really, no. I liked Peter, but he left! Everyone I like leaves! I do like them all.

What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?

Working with the horses in all different capacities, and learning! Cause I don’t always know what I’m doing, and the learning experience is always great.

Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it?

I used to ride, but that was years ago. And in college, I was lucky enough to have a horse riding facility down the road! I’ve always had the interest, but my involvement has been sporadic.

How did you initially find out about us?

I was going to an acupuncture before I retired, and the acupuncturist and I got to talking about what we might get into when we retired, and she said “I’m thinking about checking out volunteering at Days End.” I went ahead and did it, but she didn’t.

VisitingEducationTourVolunteers

Any groups of 10 or more people can reserve a paid tour of DEFHR We need volunteers who would be willing to lead these tours and tell the world about DEFHR!

Special Request

Our residential internship program is in need of a reliable used vehicle to support our interns as they travel between our facilities and the local community for essential tasks.

If you, or someone you know, has a car or truck they no longer need and would be willing to donate, it would be a tremendous help to our program and the dedicated interns who help us every day. Your generosity would directly support our mission and allow our interns to focus on their work with the horses.

Contact our Equine Programs Director for more information.

Many employers offer matching funds and paid time off to volunteer and give back to the community? Corporations and businesses are getting on board with matching donation amounts for their employees. For example, you donate $10 each paycheck (via automatic payroll deduction) then your employer matches your amount to your chosen charity!! Your employer may also offer paid time off to volunteer with your co-workers. Businesses partnering with local non-profits is a great way to show their support and give back to their local communities. Plus, employee group volunteering serves as a team building experience.
