HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Tranquil Tuesday

“Toods”

Tranquil Tuesday (Toods) is a lovely chestnut off the track

Thoroughbred mare that was born in 2010 and her racing name was My Daughter’s Kids. She has been with DEFHR since 2019 and was a body condition score of a 1 when she arrived.

Sometimes horses take a little longer to rehab whether it is physically or mentally but we want to give the horse the time they need to start afresh.

Toods is doing very well in her training program. She is a brave mare who loves obstacles and tackles them head first. She loves chasing the big soccer ball around and standing on the pedestal. She loves hot water baths and getting bum scratches and doing her carrot stretches. She’s super fun to ride but sensitive so she’ll need a kind, quiet rider who can continue to build her confidence.

Toods has helped teach people in the Horsemanship Clinics as she is really fun to work on the ground. She’s dabbled in some liberty work and positive reinforcement…she really will make a great partner for someone that wants to focus on good horsemanship and play around with under saddle work also.

“She is a brave mare who loves obstacles and tackles them head first.”

Volunteer Spotlight

John

Webster

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?

Started in January of this year, so about 10 months.

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?

Eva. I miss her. I had no prior experience with horses at all, and Eva was who I learned to groom with. She was a total sweetheart.

What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?

The variability! I always get to expand my knowledge and learn something new, and the staff are amazing and so patient. Lynn has 100 million things going on, but still takes time to answer my silly questions about horses. You never know when you’re going to have to drop a horse off at their feed station, then go help move a washer and dryer!

Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it?

Literally zero. Orientation with Mattie and two others was my first introduction!

How

did you initially find out

about us?

I know I’ve driven by in the past with going to Larriland, and when I was teaching in Howard county, I had assisted a student with a project that involved learning about DEFHR. After I retired and was looking for something to do, and knew of DEFHR previously - after trying a couple other volunteer opportunities, I was impressed with the quality and professionalism of DEFHR and the staff.

Volunteer Needs

BarnVolunteers

Volunteers support our staff being able to effectively and efficiently take care of our herd and their needs; we frequently have NO volunteers on the listed days. Consider helping out!

EducationEventVolunteers

As we enter the fall season, we have two Scout Days open for enrollment that will need volunteer support to facilitate and make special!

VisitingVolunteerGroupPoint Volunteers

Any organization can contact Days End to schedule a day to come out and volunteer as a group We need one of our volunteers to be their eyes and hands, making sure they have what they need and that they can navigate the farm!

Any groups of 10 or more people can reserve a paid tour of DEFHR. We need volunteers who would be willing to lead these tours and tell the world about DEFHR!

FacilitiesVolunteers

As a working farm, things are always needing fixed If you’re interested in learning what it takes to keep a farm going, what it takes to be ‘handy,’ or just want to build things, let Mattie know and you can join our FOT! (Facilities Operations Team)

SCOUT DAYS FALL 2024

Scout Days are an amazing way to outreach for DEFHR and teach the next generation of equine advocates not just about DEFHR and its mission, but also inspire them to have compassion.

UPCOMING TOURS

Visitors can choose to sign up and experience DEFHR through a dedicated Education Tour, which lasts 45-60 minutes and provides visitors with an educational introduction talk to the organization, a tour of our immediate facilities, and ends with a horse meet-and-greet.

Special Request

Our residential internship program is in need of a reliable used vehicle to support our interns as they travel between our facilities and the local community for essential tasks.

If you, or someone you know, has a car or truck they no longer need and would be willing to donate, it would be a tremendous help to our program and the dedicated interns who help us every day. Your generosity would directly support our mission and allow our interns to focus on their work with the horses.

Contact our Equine Programs Director for more information.

Many employers offer matching funds and paid time off to volunteer and give back to the community? Corporations and businesses are getting on board with matching donation amounts for their employees. For example, you donate $10 each paycheck (via automatic payroll deduction) then your employer matches your amount to your chosen charity!! Your employer may also offer paid time off to volunteer with your co-workers. Businesses partnering with local non-profits is a great way to show their support and give back to their local communities. Plus, employee group volunteering serves as a team building experience.

MCCORMICK SPICE, UNITED HEALTH CARE, T. ROWE PRICE, HOME DEPOT, RAYTHEON, CLOROX, CONSTELLATION

ENERGY AND CVS HEALTH ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MANY COMPANIES GIVING BACK THROUGH THEIR EMPLOYEES.

Check with your employer’s human resources department for the give back programs they offer or about starting one! For corporate/business group volunteer opportunities, please email Carrie at welcome@defhr.org.
