ELUL 5780/TISHREI 5781| SEPTEMBER 2020 | VOLUME 84 ISSUE 54

RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS In recent weeks, the most frequently voiced opinion I’ve heard is the desire for 2020 to be over. It’s easy to understand why! Given that the High Holidays are nearly upon us, we’re about to get our wish with the Jewish year, at least. 5780 is just about over, and I think we all look forward to 5781 with both hope and trepidation. The last few months have upended our expectations for just about everything. We’ve changed the formats by which we work, learn, and socialize. We’ve even changed the format for how we worship and participate in Jewish life. Some of these changes have been good. Based on the numbers, attendance at daily minyan, Shabbat services and adult education are all much higher than expected. It’s great to know that so many people are finding ways to connect and participate with us at CBS, albeit through virtual means. However, I think some of the changes are not as positive. I can’t tell you how many posts I’ve seen on social media describing how our newly home-centered lives have Rabbi Ferratier

led to an overly relaxed approach to life. People regularly joke that bathing has become optional. People have been less focused on keeping their living spaces and bodies clean. It’s not uncommon to show up for a Zoom meeting formally dressed from the waist up, and comfortably dressed from the waist down. I certainly understand this tendency, and at times, have even been guilty of it myself. However, I think there is one area where we cannot afford to become lax, either personally or communally; namely, our Judaism. You might rightfully ask, how can I worry that our Judaism might become lax when I’ve just said that attendance at services and classes are actually higher than they were prior to COVID-19? There are two things I’d like everyone to think about. After the Temple was destroyed, the rabbis said that the humble table at home replaced the sacrificial altar. While our building may be closed, it is important for all of us to remember that we can practice sacred rituals at home also. The other thing is that we still need to take our virtual worship seriously, especially on the High Holidays. It is important to remember that these are still Holy Days. (continued on page 2)

RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS (continued from front page Rabbi Ferratier’s Findings) It may not be necessary to wear the fanciest clothes, but I would still recommend dressing up a little to attend virtual services. Perhaps it might be worth moving the device from which you’re Live Streaming or Zooming out of the office or the kitchen and into a living room or dining room for a change of scenery and to make it feel special and different. Since services will be on-line, it will be tempting to check e-mail and other social media. I would encourage that phones should be treated just as if you were in the sanctuary - turned off and put away. Yom Kippur will be on a weekday, and it will be tempting to have services open in one window, and work Zoom calls in another. I strongly advise against this. These are Holy Days, and should still be treated as such. It might feel as though this pandemic is endless, but we need to remember that it is only temporary. When we look back in 10, 20, or 50 years, do we want to be able to say we cared enough about Judaism that we continued to attend services, send our kids to religious school, and support our religious institutions even in the midst of a national crisis? Or will our children look at our behavior and conclude that none of this was really that important? As all of us look forward to the new year, may we do so with the same faith and fortitude that our ancestors displayed, ensuring that the legacy they preserved for us is equally strong for those who will come after us, L’Shanah Tovah! CBS Sisterhood Social Action for Opening Event and 2020-2021 The Sisterhood Social Action Project for this year, beginning with the Opening Event on Wednesday, September 9, will be The ARK. The ARK is a Jewish Social Service organization supporting our local Jewish community. The ARK’s Food Pantry is an integral part of their organization. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the needs at the pantry have multiplied exponentially. A special fund for this purpose has been established at Congregation Beth Shalom. All contributions designated to this fund will be used to purchase gift cards for Jewel grocery stores. Our CBS community will also benefit since we receive a percentage from the gift card purchases. The minimum amount to participate is $5.

CBS Sisterhood Social Action Project CBS Sisterhood is continuing the Social Action Project begun at WLCJ Convention 2020. We will be making fleece blankets and t-shirt shopping bags to donate to The ARK. The blankets will be given to their clients at Chanukah and the bags will go directly to the Food Pantry. We will be collecting these finished items until Thanksgiving, November 25, 2020. Since CBS is closed the donations will be dropped off at Edna Schrank’s home. Please contact Edna for questions and information eschrank@comcast.net Attached are the YouTube directions for both.

Checks should be sent to: Congregation Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062, Attn: The ARK/Maria

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Tanya Solomon

Last month I wrote about rules I follow in my life, and how my newest rule “change is a constant, so make it a change for good” has affected me. Specifically, I wrote about changes at Congregation Beth Shalom since the pandemic began. I wrote about how proud I am to be part of an organization that has become more interactive and innovative in programming, classes, and services, and how all of us - staff, lay leaders, and congregants - are partners in this change for good as our congregation has grown for the better.

But what has not changed is our need to be part of a community of shared values, as we continue to follow our mission statement. I am constantly amazed at how each of you do your part to check in with each other, to help each other where needed. I recently received an email from a non-driving congregant who stated that whereas many of our “drive-through” events or projects have been a fun way to stay connected, for those who cannot drive, the activities simply increase a sense of isolation. We need to continue to innovate to serve every member of the congregation. So, moving forward, we will be calling on volunteers to drop off items for our non-driving members in a safe way. This solution has so many benefits - those looking for another way to support our CBS family can help us include our members who are not able to get out and bring our community closer together. There is something comforting in knowing that our community wants to connect, and that we are responsible for each other. I recently read an article by David Suissa called “For the High Holy Days, Do the Unexpected: Double Down”. (Spoiler alert - you will hear me refer to this in my Yom Kippur Appeal). Suissa wrote that being responsible for each other is the Jewish way; that this is how we have survived as a people for so long. How do we teach each other the value of community, to feel the essence of being Jewish? We show them. David Suissa states that the actions we take now, pave the way for decisions we will make in the future. Whether we are in the building or not, we need to continue our connections and support for each other and for CBS. I know that each of our members must make difficult choices right now, choices about life, about relationships and about CBS. I urge all of you to remain part of this beautiful, inspirational community. Remember, we have changed but our change has been for the better. With your help, the changes we have yet to make will make us a stronger and even more vibrant religious family. Shalom! Tanya OFFICE CLOSINGS

YOUTH/YOUNG FAMILY PROGRAMMING Eric Golberg

My favorite time of the year is finally here! Youth Programming is back and better than ever!

Though it might not be the way we imagined, our newly elected USY Board has been working hard all summer to continue to provide the best programming and engagement for our youth this coming year. Starting on September 3rd, USY is back with a whole new slate of programming. For the time being we will continue to run weekly Thursday night USY Lounges on Zoom. With the huge success of our other online programs from the last school year, we will continue with Parsha Talk, L.T.I (Let’s Talk Israel), and Freshman Facetime! In addition, we will be adding brand new programs to our slate such as Upperclassmen Facetime and Gameshow nights! These programs will happen on alternating weeks with more information to come out soon! This year we will be featuring another brand new program for our Kadima aged students! Starting on Wednesday, September 16th, once a month we will be holding Kadima Lounge nights! Open to all 6-8th graders, get a taste of USY through fun programming and games with all of your friends from 7-8pm! We are looking forward to seeing all of our young family members during our Young Family Parent nights with games, prizes, and more! Be on the lookout for more information on our CBS Young Family Page and in your email! Finally, I want to personally thank all of our families that participated in our first ever CampCBS! Throughout the 8 weeks we featured more than 40 unique programs with over 500 total downloads! I can’t wait to see what we can do next year with CampCBS when we are hopefully back in person! I am so excited for the school year to begin! See you at all of our programming. Eric

SISTERHOOD Robyn Rosengard

The Summer has flown by so fast. We have worked extremely hard over the summer to create a robust year of programming. I am excited to see how these new opportunities will be received. It will be great!!!!

As I sit here thinking about what our High Holidays will look like, it is hard to imagine not sitting in the sanctuary with my CBS Family. I know that while there are no assigned seats, we typically end up in the same spot each year. I will miss the usual “good morning” and the hugs from our section companions. I know that this all sounds so glum but here is what I am looking forward to. The new experience of sharing the Holidays in my own home. Taking more time to read the margin commentary in our High Holiday Mahzor. There will certainly be a shorter walk to the restroom, and I am sure there will be more new experiences that I will be able to write about in my next article. New Normal, is not as normal as we hoped but it will be fine. The one thing that will not change is the sweet smell of holiday cooking that will begin soon. This month we will have our Membership/Program Opening, Installation, and Valued Volunteer event on Wednesday September 9th, 2020 from 6:30-9:00 PM via Zoom. Our Guest Speaker will be Lisa GoodmanHelfand. I hope that you all will join us from the comfort of your home. Thank you to Jody Sigal and Laurie B. Davis for your hard work. Once again, our Judaica Shop is selling Challahs for the Challahdays. The orders need to be in by Thursday, September 10th. Pick up will be on Thursday, September 17th Noon to 3:00 pm at the CBS main entrance. Thank you to all who have donated to I Support The Girls, we have donated 125 bras. These will go to homeless shelters and other areas of need throughout the Chicago area. Important Dates to Remember: Join us for our Opening Event on SEPTEMBER 9th Order your Challahs by SEPTEMBER 10TH Pick up your Challahs on SEPTEMBER 17TH L’Shanah Tovah! Have a sweet New Year! Robyn

MEN’S CLUB Steven Elisco

Over the years, when I was not at CBS for a Sunday morning program, I would be home watching Sunday Morning on CBS. Comedian Jim Gaffigan often has a commentary on the program. Especially now with COVID-19, his comedic style and dry sense of humor is perfect. I am putting the final touches on this article on Sunday, August 2nd right after watching this week’s issue. You can see his full commentary on YouTube, which I urge you to do, but here is the gist of it: It’s already August? But is it really? I know the calendar says it’s August and the corn I planted in my garden says it’s August. Wait, I planted corn? It can’t be August. There wasn’t a July, a June, or a May. I remember April, it was a cruel extension of March. Maybe it is still March. I still do not understand that term “New Normal” like I didn’t understand it in March. How can “New” be “Normal”? How can “Normal” be “New”? I got ‘a check my corn. That’s how I know it’s not March, because I’m growing corn! Why am I growing corn? Doesn’t that summarize life in this pandemic in a lighthearted way? It’s true, at least for me, there has been a lot of sameness week after week.

It is no exaggeration that this year is going to be a challenge, a challenge the Men’s Club is ready to accept and overcome. Here are some things we are going to do with our programming this year: 1. We will focus on things we can do to bring back some form of familiarity in a time that is not normal. 2. We will develop strategies and tactics to come up with ways to differentiate one online program from the next to reduce or eliminate some of the sameness. 3. We will continue with leadership development so that the Men’s Club and synagogue life at CBS will continue to be strong during and after COVID-19. Please joins us for a different kind of Men’s Club Opening Dinner on September 17, 2020. As I told both the Men’s Club Executive Committee and Board, we will not focus on what we cannot do, but what we can and will do. Debbie, Grace, and I would like to wish each of you a very healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. L ‘Shana Tova, Steven

SOCIAL ACTION Social Action

Our committee continues to offer support to the Northfield Township Food Pantry, The ARK, the PADS shelter, and many more needy organizations. Here are a few highlights: We are providing supplemental food bags to students in a Northbrook school this summer. We are hoping to add students from an additional school in Northbrook starting in September. Contact Leatte Gelfeld, leatteg@gmail.com, for more information. Several of our volunteers who have shopped for and delivered groceries to ARK clients are no longer able to do so because they are at high risk of contracting COVID. If anyone is comfortable grocery shopping and willing to do so once every month or two, please contact Merrill Medansky at merrill.medansky@gmail.com. All our clients are within ten miles of the synagogue, including Deerfield and Glenview. Throughout the summer, The ARK has been picking up food donations at CBS. They are in desperate need of food to stock their pantry shelves. With the Holidays approaching, The ARK’s needs are even greater. Our High Holiday Canned Food Drive for The Ark (canned Kosher and not expired please) will run from Sunday, August 30 through Tuesday, September 29. Please drop off on the carts located by the CBS main entrance (circle drive). Contact Susan Karlinsky at Skarlinsky@BethShalomNB.org for more information. PADS homeless guests continue to be housed at a hotel in Arlington Heights. CBS members have been generously supporting them by providing donations of needed items and money to help offset the costs. For more information contact Sara Weinstein at slo155@aol.com. Do you have a project you are interested in starting? There is always room for more members on our committee. Please do not hesitate to contact me at SocialActionVP@BethShalomNB.org. On behalf of the Social Action Committee, L’Shana Tovah. We wish you all a happy and healthy Holiday season. The Legacy Society at Congregation Beth Shalom The purpose of the Legacy Society is to provide long term financial assistance to CBS and its members. With a successful program, we will help ensure that Congregation Beth Shalom will be here for generations to come. Think of it like L’dor V’dor, handing over the synagogue from generation to generation. We want to be here for the Jewish Community of Northbrook, not just today but for tomorrow and for it to be a second home for generations to come. Please consider making a future gift to CBS by using one of the many different methods to leave your legacy to us. KERUV KORNER DONATIONS Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim,

My Dear Fellow Community Member,

What you are feeling is shared by millions of Jews and people of all religions throughout the world who have always been able to rely on their religious communities and spiritual leaders as sources of love, kindness, and support at times of crisis. If I read between the lines, your not being physically present for services is not just about not being in Shul, but equally losing out on that feeling of belonging and connection to community that only the High Holidays can provide. Through many initiatives at CBS such as Keruv over the last 10 years, we have become even more welcoming, accepting, understanding, and engaging as a community. Like family, these are values that can bind the ties of a community beyond the physical structure and the proximal connections to each other. At the same time, we are all worn down and there is no end in sight to our distress, and not being in Shul for the High Holidays is yet another loss and disappointment with which to contend. However, I am going to offer you a suggestion that may take some of the edge off yours and other’s feelings of despair. While I understand that my suggestion cannot be endorsed by our clergy, I believe their incredible flexibility in support of Zoom B’nai Miztvot and other historical restrictions like accessing our electronics for the Holidays in the service of our community will hopefully keep me out of too much trouble. Here goes, connect with your traditional friends and family with whom you normally sit throughout the service. Take those opportunities to catch up on their lives since last year, to analyze the Rabbi’s sermons (sorry Rabbis), to kvel over our Cantor’s chanting of the Hineni, and to complain about being hungry on Yom Kippur. We have Dear Dr. Bob, depended on technology throughout this pandemic to I am in such a state of despair, I have tolerated working maintain our challenged spirits, I believe we should not from home, not being with my loved ones, not going out be judged by how we want and need to derive meaning to dinners with friends, not going to movies, and not from our holiest of days. Maintain those smaller connecbeing able to travel. With technology, I am finding ways tions that add so much meaning to your spiritual experito stay connected and being entertained. But now the ence. CBS is so much more than a physical structure. High Holidays are rapidly approaching. In 60 years, I have Like the connections we maintain with family and friends never not been in Shul for the High Holidays and having when months, if not years, can pass without literal hugs to watch the service from home in relative isolation (I and kisses, my holiday wish for all of you is to not feel do understand the why) feels like the final straw crashing despair as well as a lessened sense of loss to what I down on my spirit. What am I to do? believe will be a temporary interruption in enjoying the full benefits we derive from being part of such a wonderful community. What a most challenging and perhaps disheartening time in our lives that we are all going through….together (even when physically separated). The key word as you can see by my point of emphasis is together. My daughters had been home since the middle of March, but alas they have now returned to their young adult lives, back to college and a move to Raleigh for a new job. It was wonderful having them home and I will miss them dearly. Their leaving during this pandemic leaves me a bit more unsettled. Why does our being physically separated now seem to be a bigger deal beyond my concerns of their physical well being? Throughout the years I have been separated from my children for months at a time due to overnight camp, travel to Israel, college, and study abroad. Throughout our separations I have never ever felt less connected to them. This pandemic that has imposed upon us the need to be physically distant (or very cautiously together) from our loved ones, friends, and community is causing a sense of loneliness and isolation in ways that most of us have never encountered. When my children were off experiencing the world outside of Glenview, I could always circle a date on the calendar when we would be reunited. Unfortunately, we cannot yet circle a day when we can literally be together as a CBS community. This troubling circumstance we are in prompted the following Dear Dr. Bob question:

As always, I welcome your constructive thoughts and feedback. I can be reached at cbskeruv@gmail.com. L'Shana Tovah! 16
