kindness. One through-line connecting these clashes is a breakdown in neighborliness, a failure to live by ve-ahavta le-re’acha kamocha. Therefore, we are called upon to practice radical neighborliness, especially towards the most vulnerable.

dents, some fatal, sparked by apparently innocent run-ins or wrong turns. These stories have tormented me. A teenager shot in the face after knocking on the wrong door… Two cheerleaders wounded by gunfire when accidentally entering someone else’s parked car... A young woman killed when her car pulled up the wrong driveway. Each incident is different, but taken together (along with countless others), they paint a picture of a society riven by suspicion, rage, and violence… a society in which our Torah’s most central teaching – ve-ahavta le-re’acha kamocha, love your neighbor as yourself – seems to fade further from view. In its place, I fear a dark future in which no one approaches their neighbors for fear of deadly consequences. This breaks my heart.

I wish I knew how to stop these things; I don’t. (Although I do believe gun control reform is part of any solution.) But Jewish tradition does offer a response. Whenever light is taken away from the world, we have a duty to replace it by performing mitzvot and gemilut chasadim, acts of

Fortunately, we have an opportunity to do just that. This year, Beth Shalom is partnering with HIAS Immigration & Citizenship at JCFS Chicago to co-sponsor a refugee family resettling in our area. We can make a difference by helping new neighbors achieve a safe and successful transition to their new lives. Our co-sponsorship involves hands-on volunteering as well as fundraising. To donate towards Beth Shalom’s goal in the HIAS Welcome Campaign, please use the embedded QR code, or send us a check and we will forward it.

To volunteer, please contact meRabbi Chapman@BethshalomNB.org.

By being good neighbors to those who are most vulnerable, we can add some light back into a world that sorely needs it.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT

Shalom Chaverim,

As most of you are aware by now this will not be my farewell message to all of you. I want to thank you for your continued support in allowing me the privilege to serve as President for one of the most special shuls throughout Chicagoland and beyond.

I cannot believe how quickly the past two years have flown by. As I mentioned last month the Board of Trustees has been working diligently at developing a new Strategic Plan, reviewing our by-laws, and evaluating the effectiveness of our committees. One of my early realizations in this process is that we have severely underutilized our Congregation’s most significant asset - that being all of you, our membership. We have many capable and talented people on our Board, but those numbers pale compared to the many talented members who we have not yet reached out to or engaged in the effort to become the best we can be. While we do have a few committees that do include many of you who are not members of the Board of Trustees, there are others such as our Youth, Programming, Membership, and Fundraising committees in which we are clearly underutilizing our CBS community. Our Strategic Plan will refine both the goals and responsibilities of these committees as well as more clearly define the roles and expectations of its members.

Over the past 55 years, Congregation Beth Shalom has maintained a high standard of excellence because we have had a dedicated and hard-working staff and a relentlessly dedicated Board of Trustees and volunteers. However, families who are willing to invest in organized religion is at an all-time low. Synagogues across the country, including Chicagoland, are struggling to maintain their membership. We are regularly hearing about synagogues who have or may have to close their doors. We are holding our own today, but tomorrow is not guaranteed. In my first year as your President, I and the Board of Trustees focused on making key leadership changes in our staff that I believe will further our success. In my second year, we have focused on evaluating our model of lay leadership. I am dedicating my third year to enlisting all of you to help in our continued growth and long-term stability. My aspirations for CBS are high - I want us to not only continue our current levels of engagement and vibrancy, but I also want us to become a destination synagogue. I want the buzz to be in Chicago and beyond that regardless of your previous religious background, family configuration, or age, Congregation Beth Shalom in Northbrook, Illinois is the place to learn, pray, and play together as Jews. For that to happen, we need our 1000 families to be both emissaries and ambassadors to spread the word about how special we are. Remember that old saying about Uncle Sam? Well……. CBS Needs You!! The Board of Trustees cannot do it without all of us being all in. Have a wonderful summer.

L’Shalom, Bob

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S EDITORIAL

CBS Family,

Once again, it is my pleasure to share with you critical information when it comes to searching for that new job. Below is the second article from Andrea Storz, Director of Employment at The Ark. If you, a relative, family friend or neighbor is looking for guidance when it comes to putting together a resume, look no further. Andrea has been helping the Jewish Community for decades in recreating or developing your story.

BLUEPRINT FOR BUILDING A RESUME

It is the perception of the reader of a resume, not the intention of the writer of the resume, which has the most impact.

The first thing to know is there is no such thing as the perfect resume. . .resumes continue to evolve and change, just like you do. If you are not getting bites for interviews, it might be time to reevaluate the resume and/or the types of jobs you are pursuing. A resume is not a laundry list, but a crucial tool that highlights skills, strengths, and accomplishments.

Quantify the accomplishment claims you make – prove that you know how to effectively use the skills that the job you are applying for demands. Remember, the accomplishments and results are what every hiring manager looks for to validate you truly being a strong candidate. Examples of achievements might include saving the company money, generating a greater profit, identifying mistakes, and resolving them, setting first impressions, training, and management techniques, of course your strengths will be relative to your role.

Reviewing job descriptions of interest and knowing how to build a strategic resume encompassing the demands of the position, is imperative. In addition to highlighting the right-fit aspect of the qualifications and responsibilities of a position, do not forget to show that you understand and welcome the opportunity to work within the overall culture of the business.

One last point . . . it is not easy to write your own resume. While you can find different templates, remember to customize your resume to reflect who you are and what you bring to a position. Of course, The Ark will be more than happy to write your resume using a professional resume writer. There will be more short pieces of advice as we continue to provide job search information. Our next steps will be about the importance of cover letters, networking, and what networking really is – or should be.

Let us know what you think and if these short tips are helpful. Reach out for a one-on-one zoom meeting with Andrea Storz, Director of Employment . . . 773-681-8964 or astorz@arkchicago.org.

Shmooze out the Blues

Thursdays from 7:15 – 7:45 PM, Cantor Stoehr will be hosting an informal gathering in the Feather Beit Midrash prior to the evening minyan. During this time anyone who is currently in a period of reciting Kaddish who feels as if a few extra minutes in the company of a few empathic others would be healing, are welcome to join us. No prepared program is planned, just some shared time, thoughts and feelings if you wish.

CBS HAPPENINGS

What is the Synagogue Community Partnership (SCP) program between JCFS and Congregation Beth Shalom? How is this helpful to the congregants, clergy and layleaders?

In a Synagogue Community Partnership, a specially-trained JCFS Chicago Liaison is assigned to each congregation. The Liaison develops a strong relationship with partnering congregations in order to provide a variety of one-stop, easily accessible connections to support and services such as:

 Consultative support for rabbis, synagogue professional staff and lay leaders

 Assistance for congregants and their families to address concerns in areas ranging from mental health and financial crisis to housing instability, food insecurity, and medical, education, behavioral, social and relationship issues

 Helping to locate activities for an aging parent, supporting a family that is searching for housing, or contacting a local food bank to connect a congregant in need with their services

 Education/prevention programming on such topics as abuse, addiction, bullying, parenting, wellness, managing chronic conditions and aging issues

 Support groups focused on issues such as bereavement, substance abuse, single parenthood or divorce

 Professional trainings for religious school and synagogue staff members

The Synagogue Community Partnership was first piloted in 2013 as a collaborative effort between JCFS Chicago, Oak Park Temple, and West Suburban Temple Har Zion in River Forest.

SCP was designed to proactively support and maintain an environment of health, trust and well-being. And to make sure that JCFS Chicago is on the ground, present and visible where the individuals live, work, learn and worship.

HAZAK held three diverse lunch and learn programs:The Men of Omaha Beach,The Golden Age of Hollywood and Understanding the World Through Wine. Members of our group also hosted one of the nights of Chanukah to lead the synagogue candle lighting prior to evening minyan…a great reason to get together for hot chocolate and sufganiyot!

SISTERHOOD

They always say that the days are long, but the years are short. It’s been an amazing two years for me as Sisterhood President. Congregation Beth Shalom is a large synagogue, but the more I have been involved, I found it to be a close, warm family. Being President of the Sisterhood has given me the opportunity to work with some of the most extraordinary people. From our exceptional clergy, to our amazing staff members to some of the warmest Sisterhood members, it has been my honor and pleasure to work with all.

Over the past two years, we came out of Covid-19 and began in-person programming and retained online attendance. Our programming expanded to a rich, diverse spectrum to serve the needs of our membership and congregation. Working together with the Men’s Club, we were able to support the needs of the entire congregation, as well as the North Shore Community.

Although, as I said before, we are a large congregation, the more involved you are, the smaller the community gets. I am so thankful for the opportunity to get to know so many truly wonderful people. I have had the opportunity to know and work closely with Rabbi Melman, Cantor Stoehr and Rabbi Chapman. The three of you bring so much to CBS, and I cannot say enough about each of you. Michael Garlin and his exceptional staff have handled all of the details behind the scenes for so much of our programming. Sisterhood can never thank Maria Catezone enough for her love and support. Maria Gutierrez and Edgar Chavez and their staff have beautified our CBS kiddushim, and it has been such a pleasure working with them.

I have so enjoyed working with Men’s Club Presidents, Steve Lessman and Dr. Andy Wagner. Together, we have accomplished great things at CBS. Michael Balter’s photography has been amazing. His photographs truly capture the spirit, love and feelings of our programs.

The guidance of Dr. Bob Spector goes above and beyond. His dedication and support of both Sisterhood and Men’s Club, as well as that of the CBS Board of Trustees, has been unfailing.

I can report to you that the Sisterhood Board and the Executive Committee in particular, work tirelessly to make CBS the warm, accepting, inclusive place that it is today. Their ideas and innovations are clever and improve CBS daily. I have been so fortunate to work with these amazing women.

As Sisterhood President, I have truly stood on the shoulder of giants. The women who served before me were generous and loving in their support and guidance from day one, and I promise to extend the same to the women who follow me in this role. I could never thank you enough.

Becoming Sisterhood President can become quite overwhelming. I must thank Robyn Rosengard for helping me with her experience and reminders, as well as being a sounding board from day one to today.

Edna Schrank, you are an inspiration. You are the embodiment of what Sisterhood should be. You are my secret weapon and source of strength. Your knowledge and experience both locally and internationally in Sisterhood have been an invaluable resource. Your support and love are limitless. I, and the Sisterhood of CBS, can never thank you enough.

Lani Schrank, I wish you the same joy, love and experience that I have as Sisterhood President as you step into this role. I know you will take CBS Sisterhood to even greater heights. I am always available to you and the Sisterhood for anything you may ever need.

Finally, I could never do this without the love and support of my husband, Alan and my sons, David and Steven. Thank you for supporting me, listening to me and for allowing me the time to serve. I love you.

Sisterhood and Men’s Club are the vital arms of the congregation. Together, we provide opportunities for even greater involvement by a vast community of members who support and build our congregation. The events, programming, social events and financial support we provide, establish the culture and warmth that is the family of CBS. Together, these arms provide the very foundation of our congregation and our community. I encourage everyone to become involved, as you are available, to reap the beautiful benefits of our congregation and to shrink the size of our large congregation to a close knit family.

Serving as the Sisterhood President over these last two years, my friendships and affection for many have become even deeper. In addition, I have made so many new friends, that this has been one of the most personally rewarding and wonderful experiences of my life. Working together to support such an important, worthy institution, side by side with such wonderful people, is an experience I can truly never explain in a short Bulletin article.

With love and gratitude, Jackie

MEN’S CLUB

Time goes by way too fast. It is more than three years since Steven Elisco and I spoke on the phone during the height of the pandemic about Men’s Club and the concerns about succession planning for the following year. At that time, we were all confined to our homes and not really doing much except our work and worrying about the next news report about the pandemic. I told Steven I would be interested in coming back as President as long as we find one of the younger guys who I could be Co-President with. The name of Andy Wagner surfaced and we spoke and he graciously accepted. It was truly an honor to serve as a Co-President of CBS Men’s Club the last two years. As I tell everyone, CBS is the best Men’s Club in the country and we have many FJMC Torch Awards to prove it. The two years of amazing success we accomplished would not have occurred without the tremendous efforts of our Executive Board including Andy Wagner; Bob Goldwin, Exec VP; Lawrence LeVine, Programming VP; Gary Solomon, VP House; Don Pike VP Ways and Means; Howard Freidin, Treasurer; Jim Hamilton, Financial Secretary; Ron Rabinowitz, Recording Secretary; Neil Rosengard, VP Membership; Alan Wernick, VP Ritual; David Lasky, Corresponding Secretary; and Steven Elisco for his advice and being there to answer questions as our immediate Past President. And a huge thanks to all the guys on the Board and our Past Presidents. Whenever they were asked to help they were there. And most of all I thank my wife Ann for giving me the time and opportunity to do the work to get it done. It was truly a labor of love and I wish Bob Goldwin and his exec and new board much success the next two years.

Steve Lessman

Co-President, CBS Men’s Club, 2021-23

Has it really been two years since I received the gavel as Co-President of the CBS Men’s Club? Time has been much of a mystery since COVID. Like Steve just said, it was while we were on lockdown when I got a call about the future of our Club. Me? President?

I’m too new at CBS. I guess I had the experience and the backing from so many people and the support of a fantastic Co-President and Club mentor, Steve Lessman. With all of my work and other commitments, I could not have done it without him. Thanks, Steve!!!

This has definitely been a learning experience in seeing how our Club and the synagogue truly ticks. I hope I was successful in leading a Club with a long and fine tradition as our Club has had over the years from an international Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC), regional, local, and synagogue standpoint. These past two years have been challenging in that my tenure started as COVID was beginning to slow and then it ramped up again, so we had to make modifications, transitions, and get creative. As Steve said above, we could not have done all of this, including our most successful Lox Box project, wonderful programming, and some of the nicest Men’s Club Shabbats ever, without the hard work of our Executive Board, Past Presidents, and Board of Directors. You have all felt a duty to step up and to give back.

The motto of the FJMC is “Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life.” That’s exactly what we do here whether it’s from the communal angle or the religious angle. This is done through Leadership, Innovation, and Community. Our Club grows leaders, mentors leaders, and allows for its leaders to use these skills in other ways at work, home, other roles at CBS, or the FJMC. We have innovated by modifying existing programs, being flexible when a worldwide pandemic toyed with us, and coming up with new and exciting ways to enhance our Jewish Community in the region, Chicagoland area, and especially at CBS.

Thanks to all of you reading for allowing me the opportunity to lead this Club. Don’t worry. I won’t slink away. Bob, you know how to find me.

Lastly, on a personal note, thanks for the support, encouragement, and suggestions from my son, Brandon, and girlfriend, Elyse, during my tenure as Co-President.

B’Shalom!

Andy Andrew F. Wagner, MD Co-President, CBS Men’s Club, 2021-23

Women’s League for Conservative Judaism Convention 2023 Social Action Project: The Shifrah and Puah Project

GIVING THE GIFT OF A HEALTHY BIRTH

Women’s League for Conservative Judaism has chosen to support the Shifrah and Puah Maternity Center in Uganda after the portion Exodus 1:1-6:1 Parshat Shemot where Shifrah and Puah, Pharaoh’s midwives are told to kill all the Jewish babies. This center was “founded” in July, 2018, due to the efforts of Israeli nurse and midwife, Ilana Shemesh, who wanted to improve the maternal and infant mortality rates in Uganda for ALL babies and mothers.

This center is donation dependent serving the women of Mbale and neighboring villages and has a multi -denominational clientele and staff of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. All services provided by the center are completely free of charge to encourage women to come in for prenatal, birth and post-partum services rather than going through their pregnancies unassisted. The center is dependent on donations.

Your support is vital to ensure these mothers and babies are healthy and provided with all the services and supplies they need. Use the drop-down menu on the Women’s League website, click on the Convention 2023 Special Project to see the different levels you can donate for the women of Uganda.

CBS Memorial Plaques

If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque.

Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in the Moseson Alcove or Feather Beit Midrash. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year whenYizkor is recited.

Beginning July 1, 2023 the cost of a memorial plaque will increase from $500 to $613. Over the last few years the cost of plaques and shipping has risen which has prompted this price increase. Please contact Maria Catezone by phone at 847-498-4100 x26 or email MCatezon@BethShalomNB.org for information or to order a plaque.

The following families have dedicated a memorial plaque in memory of their loved ones.

In memory of JOEL W. WEINSTEIN

In memory of WILLIAM FRANKLIN HARRIS
