RABBI

In my Yom Kippur sermon, I referenced a line attributed to the 17th century poet John

Donne: “Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” Put plainly, a funeral bell for another person is a memento mori, a reminder of our own mortality. The line is found within a longer passage, also well known, first published in Donne’s Meditations (1624).

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

While Donne’s preoccupation with mortality is often cited, this passage points to another important theme in his work. Donne believed in the interconnectivity of humankind.

Indeed, no person is an island. Or as our Jewish memorial prayer puts it, each of us is “bound up in the bonds of all life.”

During my summers at Harand, a theater arts camp in Wisconsin (I know there are fellow Haranders here at Beth Shalom!), every Friday night we would sing composer Peter Schickele’s folk setting of “No Man is an Island.” This concept was the underlying ethos of the camp. When we put on shows, each role was divided up between six or seven campers. A production of The Wizard of Oz might feature seven different Dorothys. Everyone had a turn in the spotlight, in the chorus, and backstage.

“No one is an island” is also an important ethos at Congregation Beth Shalom. In just my first few months, I have witnessed the deep interconnectivity within this community and beyond. To paraphrase Donne, each Beth Shalom member (and those we love) is one piece of a larger continent. Beth Shalom does not “belong” to any one person.

shul a collective “continent” of which each of us is an

component. What a blessing to be

Shalom Chaverim,

It was wonderful sharing the holidays with all of you. In case you are going through withdrawal from all the spiritual and social opportunities we had to be together last month (the Jewish version of Oktoberfest), do not fret. The next two months are filled with many more events to continue the fun.

I am so pleased to have seen our sanctuary, social halls, and youth lounge filled with members during the high holidays, and I want to thank you for your generous response to our High Holiday appeal. I had many congregants ask me about my ‘arrest’ I alluded to in my retelling of my mission to Tiraspol, Moldova, so here goes. If you have not yet heard my High Holiday message, I encourage you to stop reading now and listen to it (it can be found on our High Holiday information page on our CBS website) to appreciate the context of the rest of the story…

My hosts, Ana and her daughter Karolina were so gracious showing me their synagogue, taking me to visit many community members, allowing me to pay my respects at the Jewish cemetery where I saw many Spektor (Russian spelling) burial plots, and of course walking through the Tiraspol town center. I recorded hours of video documenting my travels. During one of our walks through the town, I was abruptly accosted by a military police officer while video taping the town square. With no explanation I was forcibly taken to the government building to meet with the town commandant (head of security). I was feeling righteous indignation (in retrospect I was being quite foolish) while Ana and Karolina were understandably frantically panic stricken. The commandant accused me of trying to document important government facilities (their village hall) for the U.S. government and demanded that I hand over my camera and all my video tapes. Ana and Karolina were pleading with me to just give it them, but I was being quite defiant because the tapes, for me, were a sacred telling of their story that CBS needed to experience. In retrospect, I was not being sensitive to how scared they were, and I have always regretted that. This standoff went on for about an hour and then I realized that my camera had a viewing monitor that allowed me to replay the tape I was using at the time. I replayed the tape to the commandant who was satisfied that I had in fact not videoed any of their government buildings. He eventually released me with a stern warning that I would not be permitted to use my video camera within their city limits. I stopped using my video camera in town, but my little Nokia camera worked just fine. Unbeknownst to them, I took several pictures of their village hall. So that is my story. The rest of my time was much less eventful. I returned home with a much greater appreciation for the freedoms I took for granted. More importantly, I returned feeling so inspired by a small Jewish community that thrived and was undaunted in the face of so many obstacles. Tiraspol, Moldova, is a Jewish community so far far away in a village most of us never heard of, my father’s Jewish community, that survived so many attempts to be extinguished by its government and refused to die.

That, my friends, is what drives me to help Congregation Beth Shalom be the best it can be. My time in Tiraspol has been a constant reminder that we can never take for granted how fortunate we are to be part of a thriving Jewish community that is warm, welcoming, and inclusive. A community that I am proud to be part of - Congregation Beth Shalom, Northbrook, Illinois.

L'Shalom, Bob FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Bob Spector High Holiday Mahzorim If you have not returned the High Holiday Mahzor to CBS, we kindly ask that you do so as soon as possible during CBS office hours: Monday-Thursday 9:00am-4:00pm Friday 9:00am-1:00pm Thank you very much!

CREATE A LEGACY

As a nonprofit organization, Congregation Beth Shalom relies on donations year after year to keep our organization going. Annual dues and tuition account for only a portion of our budget each year, and we raise additional funds thru our High Holiday appeal and our many donation funds. As the end of the calendar year approaches, now is the time that many people think about their financial and tax planning. There are several ways that you can support Congregation Beth Shalom now, and in the future; ask your financial advisors if any of these options are good for your personal situation. Your donation can be used to pay your annual commitment, High Holiday appeal, registration for a CBS event, contribution for a specific fund or almost anything else!

 Gift of Appreciated Stock

If you own shares of a company that has appreciated in value, you may benefit from donating the appreciated shares to Congregation Beth Shalom. We sell the shares upon receipt and apply the proceeds to your account. You do not have to pay any taxes on the capital gains on these shares. We both benefit!!

 Donor Advised Fund

Take advantage of tax benefits by establishing a Donor Advised Fund. Options include the Jewish Federation of Chicago, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Bank of America and others. Set up your fund, and then recommend that your fund manager donates to Congregation Beth Shalom. This is a great way to engage family members of all ages in your philanthropy goals.

IRA Required Minimum Distributions

You may be able to lower your annual taxable income by making Congregation Beth Shalom the charitable recipient of your Required Minimum Distribution. Ask your tax advisor if you qualify and direct your fund manager to make the distribution payable to Congregation Beth Shalom.

Planned Giving

You can name Congregation Beth Shalom as a beneficiary on your Retirement account or Life Insurance policy. Child 1, Child 2, Grandchild 1, Grandchild 2, Congregation Beth Shalom…Follow the lead of many well known philanthropists and add a charity to your list of beneficiaries. Consider a 1% or 10% share to support Congregation Beth Shalom.

Bequests

Take time to update your will and trusts. Consider adding Congregation Beth Shalom as a beneficiary. You can leave a family legacy at CBS and reduce your family’s tax burden. There may be other tax benefits too, speak to your trusted advisors soon.

Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust

These are tax-advantaged ways to continue to earn income on your investments during your lifetime and to benefit Congregation Beth Shalom after your death. They are complex documents and require legal and tax advice.

Congregation Beth Shalom is one of several organizations in the Chicago metro area that participates in the Jewish United Fund’s Create a Legacy program. We are committed to educating and encouraging our congregants to give now and in the future, to sustain the future of Congregation Beth Shalom. Need additional information? Call your tax or legal advisor or talk to Glen Roter, CBS Create a Legacy chair (847 641 0121) or Susan Karlinsky, CBS Controller (847 498 4100 ext. 22).

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S EDITORIAL

Living to 100

Yes, I am now a member of AARP. They have been marketing and marketing and marketing membership to me for more than 10 years, since my 40’s (how dare they market me for AARP in my 40’s). I finally broke down in my late 50’s I JOINED. I just couldn’t say no to joining the largest nonprofit interest group in the United States focusing on issues affecting those over the age of 50. Now for members under 50 (just as an FYI 50 comes quickly), and then, OH MY 60, just a few years away for me.

In the September issue of AARP Magazine, there is an article called the “Best Ways to Beat the Odds.” I buttered up a bagel and brewed my favorite coffee this past weekend and I delved in to see what I could learn. What odds am I going to beat? They want to share with me how to cheat death (for a while anyway), outsmart crooks (most of the time), avoid catastrophes and a whole lot more. I am so excited. To my amazement, there it was, an entire quarter of a page on my odds of living to 100 if you’re in your 50s. A 30 second read and there are only three items on the list. Let’s do it.

1) Head to a city 85% of centenarians live in cities; better access to medical care, social networks, culturally stimulating activities and transportation systems. Yes, I live in Northbrook, however I consider us a neighborhood of Chicago as I check off the box to my first learning point, live in a city. Yahoo, I’m on my way to 100.

2) Hang with your peeps. If you know me, this is so easy. 87% of centenarians communicate nearly every day with a friend or family member. This is so critical to those that live alone and critical that we continue our conversations with those that we love, care about and most of all people that make us smile. If you know me, I don’t stop talking. I can’t imagine I won’t someday be the President of my Homeowners Association or overseeing my condo building hopefully somewhere warm. I am checking off Box # 2.

3) Finally, to my amazement, engage your spiritual side. Attending religious services four times per month has been linked with four to 14 years of increased life expectancy. In interviews conducted by National Geographic, 258 out of 263 centenarians belonged to faith-based communities. I can’t check off that box. Hmmm, I need to figure out why as this should be a no brainer, I am here 6 7 days per week.

I have many roadblocks, excuses, and my job that really stops me from attending. However, like many of you, my biggest excuse is time. Excuses include my day off each week is Saturday, I have 2 to 3 evening meetings each week and when we are short people to make a Minyan, I am always willing to step-in, however, once they have ten I head back to my office to get more work done. When I do attend services, I am usually there to work and take care of what needs to be done in the moment. However, why can’t I be there for me, just 4 times per month? 100 sounds like such a great number.

My New Year’s goal is to attend 4 times per month; however I need your help. Maybe I should wear a special name tag during my 4 times per month for everyone to see, “I am here to pray today, I am here to be spiritually connected, talk to me on Monday with synagogue business.” I really want to check off that box for 4 times per month and live to 100.

I can find one Saturday morning each month for me to become spiritually connected. I also love meeting some of the most amazing CBS congregants. Sitting at Kiddush with someone you don’t know and learning about someone else’s life can be a tremendous experience. Meeting amazing people, hearing amazing stories and increasing my life expectancy with a little prayer and tuna works for me.

Minyan, I’m already here and I know in the Feather Beit Midrash NO ONE talks to me, especially if I am sitting up front. I can do it at least once per week and according to my clergy it is a mitzvah for others. Count me in to live to 100, count me in to get spiritually connected and most of all count me in for improving my odds in living to 100.

Tashlich Family Program

On Sunday, October 2nd we enjoyed an outdoor Family Tashlich Program. Our kindergarten through fifth grade families joined with our Families with Young Children for a zimriyah, writing our misdeeds on water dissolving paper and then a bubble tashlich! Afterwards we learned about saying “I’m Sorry” and teshuvah by playing with a parachute, doing the “Teshuvah Trot” (a line dance to the tune of hokey pokey), playing corn hole and playing an apology/forgiveness game. We ended the morning with a picnic lunch.

Additional School Updates

Our 6th and 7th grade programs have continued to be held this year on Shabbat mornings instead of Sunday mornings. Our students amaze us each week with their behavior and participation! Our lay leaders are taking turns working with the 7th grade for about an hour. Contact Stacy Ybarra if you would like to spend time discussing the weekly parashah with them (materials are provided).

Our 7th graders have just begun the first part of their Holocaust Unit. We have the pleasure again this year of having Mark Gelfeld, a docent at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, teach. Mark will teach on 4 consecutive Tuesdays (which began on October 25th) and part of the hour program will be a tour of the museum on Sunday, November 20th. Parents are encouraged to participate with their students.

Our 7th graders are also participating in minyan on Tuesdays.

If you are interested in participating in the Religious School by substitute teaching, teaching or being part of our School Board, please contact Stacy Ybarra at sybarra@bethshalomnb.org.

HAZAK presents: The Men of Omaha Beach

Thursday, November 10, 2022 | 12:30 - 2:00 pm

Lunch & Learn with historian Robert Mueller

This event will be held in person at Congregation Beth Shalom –fee for lunch and speaker is $10 per person (Zoom link will be available)

The Men of Omaha Beach paints the picture of Omaha Beach on 6 June, 1944, and provides insight into the how and where the Normandy Invasion took place. After a brief introduction to why Omaha Beach, our presenter, Robert Mueller, will focus on individuals from the US 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions in the initial assault waves who overcame the German defenses, and on men of the US 2nd Ranger Battalion who captured the German gun positions at Pointe du Hoc. These are the men responsible for the success of the risky endeavor we call D Day. Their lives before and after D Day are briefly described. Some of these men returned home, and some didn't. Period photographs show what it was like in 1944 and contemporary photographs show what some of these battle sites look like today. The presentation ends with a visit to Normandy American Cemetery, site of the bloodiest of the fighting and now a fitting tribute to these men's sacrifices. Questions? First and foremost, Sisterhood is thankful for the generous, thoughtful and hardworking members who work throughout the year to make Congregation Beth Shalom a little bit better with each thing they do, no matter how large or how small. We are thankful for all of the guidance and friendship of the clergy who are here for us 24/7. We are thankful for the dedication and hard work of the entire CBS staff. Happy November and Cheshvan. We can all breathe a little after a busy holiday season. We just got through a busy time at Beth Shalom. Continuing our meet the board series, let’s meet our Ritual Vice President, Alan Wernick. Alan was born in Columbus, Ohio, and his family belonged to Congregation Tifereth Israel (TI), a conservative shul in Columbus. At the age of 12, Alan’s fatherz”l passed from pneumonia. He celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at TI with his motherz”l, two sisters, large extended family, friends, but sadly without his dad. In high school, he was very involved in stage crew, debate team, ran AV equipment for the school and as a freshman, he was the manager of the boys’ baseball team.

The one constant in Alan’s early years was his love for electronics and computers. His mom would tell the story that when he was around six years old, he rebuilt a broken lawn mower and fixed it! At age ten, he built his first computer. He was active in AZA in high school and also enjoyed martial arts, which he would continue into college and beyond. Alan attended THE Ohio State University majoring in accounting. After Alan’s dad passed, his cousin, Mel, who was 20 years older, became a father figure in deciding career choices. Accounting and then law school were highly suggested, and they both were realized. Alan quickly became involved in computer programming at OSU and became a research assistant programming and consulting for faculty, staff, and students in various colleges including Business, Pharmacy and Medicine. He was also involved in Hillel and was president of Sigma Iota Lambda, a Pre Law Honorary Society. After graduation, he worked as a bank auditor prior to law school. He graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus where he won an award for best written motion and was selected as the research assistant to the Dean. During his last year, he also studied at OSU Law School. After graduation, he joined a large multistate real estate developer becoming their General Counsel.

During his last year of Law School, Alan attended a Hillel Grad Student Dinner and met a lady who had recently moved to Columbus for work, Jennifer Field. Two years later she moved to New York City, though they kept in touch. Soon after, he discovered the burgeoning field of computer law, which meant he could combine his love for law and computers. After a letter campaign to the then six practitioners, he moved to New York City for a position with one of them and reunited with Jennifer, marrying within a year. They have two children. Chava, who lives in New Jersey and whose work involves website design and development. She recently married Chayim Goldberg. Their son, Akiva, is a PhD grad student in aerospace engineering at OSU.

Alan and his family moved to Northbrook in 1998, when he was recruited by a Chicago law firm specializing in his fields of technology, privacy/cybersecurity, and intellectual property law He is currently with the law firm of Aronberg Goldgehn Jennifer is a competitive intelligence research analyst for Allstate.

When they moved to Northbrook, they joined CBS and became active. Alan started with helping the Men’s Club with the Lox Box program and went on from there. Jennifer is a member of Sisterhood, and has served on the synagogue Ritual Committee and led weekday minyan services. She also is a frequent Torah and Haftarah reader. As Ritual VP, Alan oversees three major activities of Men’s Club, Yellow Candle Program, World Wide Wrap and Men’s Club Shabbat. We thank Alan and Jennifer for their continued involvement at CBS, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our special events in November including the Men’s Club/Sisterhood event at Bowlero in Buffalo Grove on November 12th .

November Social Action Spotlight Leatte Gelfeld and her work with Hunger Free Northbrook.

Did you know over 400 Northbrook school age children are food insecure, not knowing where their next meal will come from and go to bed hungry?

Local Northbrook schools provide these children with lunches throughout the school week but cannot feed these kids on the weekends. Hunger Free Northbrook fills in the gap for weekend lunches by providing food bags to these children monthly and additional bags during Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break and Spring Break. Congregation Beth Shalom has partnered with Hunger Free Northbrook and currently supplies supplemental food bags for 22 children. Congregation Beth Shalom volunteers are given a preset list of items to be included in the bag they shop for, and each volunteer does this at their own expense. Bags typically cost between $25 30 each.

We thank Leatte and her amazing team of volunteers for their extraordinary compassion and kindness to these children! If you are interested in volunteering or donating, please reach out to Leatte Gelfeld at 312 310 6950 or at leatteg@gmail.com. If you are not able to shop and would like to make a donation, Leatte will do the shopping for you!

Kol Ha’Kavod to all our Social Action Volunteers!

Please don’t forget, we are still collecting athletic shoes for “Nike Grind” until November 7th . Any brand, style, size of athletic shoe is welcome. No spikes, cleats, sandals, boots or dress shoes please! The collection bin can be found in the foyer near the coat room.

And...Calling for all leftover snack size candies from the October holiday! Bring those leftover treats to Beth Shalom and they will be donated to a variety of local organizations! Collection will continue until November 14th .

Together we DO great things!

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE SERVING OVERSEAS?

Is anyone in your family now serving abroad? Do you have friends or co workers who have family members or friends serving overseas? Congregation Beth Shalom would like to send care packages to deployed troops to show our support and appreciation.

A KID TO ISRAEL PARTNERSHIP

SKIP is a cooperative program in which families, congregations, and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago each contribute funds toward an Israel Experience program for participating students. The SKIP goal is for each student to travel to Israel as part of their Jewish education. Enrollment begins during a student’s 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and continues through 9th grade. Both public school and day school students are eligible. The combined annual contribution for our children at Beth Shalom is $255 ($70 from each family, matched by $100 from our congregation thanks to the support from the David Zemsky Memorial Skip Fund and $85 from Federation). Although the SKIP program may not cover the entire cost of a trip to Israel, the funds make a considerable reduction in the expense. Remember that the funds are in an interest-bearing account. Furthermore, families in financial need can apply for scholarships from other sources.

Enrollment is arranged through our synagogue. After the initial enrollment form is completed, we are responsible for the rest submitting the partnership agreements, transferring the funds and reporting our children’s names to the Federation. Enrollment information will arrive in late October/early November, with a deadline of November 15th for the submission of forms and checks.

There are many wonderful Israel Experience programs out there everything from internship programs in various fields to volunteer programs to sports-based programs to study programs of almost any length. Your child’s SKIP funds (as well as Gift of Israel funds) can provide the opportunity of a lifetime. Birthright Israel is a wonderful program but not everyone is guaranteed a spot on a Birthright trip. Your child’s SKIP funds ensure that they will be able to go to Israel at least once, if not more than once, even if Birthright Israel is not an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register my child?

When you receive the enrollment information, you need to complete the forms and send a $70 check, made payable to Congregation Beth Shalom, by November 15th .

What if I forget to sign up in 3rd grade? May I start my child at a later date?

Yes, you may begin participating when your child is in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade.

If I want to enroll my child who is currently in 4th grade, may I pay past 9th grade and make up a missing year?

You may begin contributions in grades 3, 4, 5, or 6 but you may only contribute through 9th grade.

If my child would like to go to Israel before the completion of 9th grade, may I use his/her funds one year earlier?

S.K.I.P. ‘s goal is for funds to be used for a high school or college Israel Experience program and is designed for sophomore high school students or older. Under certain circumstances, families may be able to use a portion of their SKIP funds for 8th grade Israel Experience programs, such as Israel Now or day school trips. Please contact israelexperience@juf.org to make sure that your trip is eligible and then use the 8th grade Israel Experience Savings Request form to redeem your funds.

If you have any questions on registering your child, please contact Pamela Connell at PConnell@BethShalomNB.org or 847-498-5352.

CBS Memorial Plaques

If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque.

Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in the Moseson Alcove or Feather Beit Midrash. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year whenYizkor is recited.

Contact Maria Catezone by phone at 847-498-4100 x26 or email MCatezone@BethShalomNB.org for information or to order a plaque.

The following families have dedicated a memorial plaque in memory of their loved ones.

In memory of RITA SCHWARTZ by Terri & Marc Schwartz
