RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES

balance, when we stray from the midpoint. This time of year, just past the halfway mark of our calendar, just past the midway point of the Torah, is the perfect time for each of us to reflect on what has been.

not too many of us are thinking about Rosh Hashanah andYom Kippur. Recently I spoke about the fact that as we enter the month of Nisan, the month in which we celebrate Pesach, we are halfway through the Jewish calendar year. While we might wait until Elul, the month prior to the High Holidays to begin to look inward and examine ourselves, we really ought to be doing this sooner.

The midpoint of our year is a perfect place to take a timeout and do some soul searching. What have we accomplished since Rosh Hashanah? Where have we made missteps? What do we want to continue doing? And where do we need to correct our wrongs? These are critical questions to ask now, and not wait until we have almost the entire year behind us. It is so much easier to course correct now, instead of waiting until the entire year is behind us.

Maimonides believed that living a life with balance and not being too far to any extreme of our character traits was the proper way to live. He wrote about trying to do our best to live at the midpoint. This is sage advice from one of the greatest Jews of all time. There are plenty of times when our lives get out of

For some, it has been a year filled with joy. For others, it has been a year filled with sadness, and for others, everything in between. There are so many ways to take moments out of our busy lives and reflect on the last several months. Whether it is through meditation, yoga, quiet music, a walk outdoors, or just closing our eyes and slowing our breathing and to just think. Admittedly, we don’t always want to think about the past, confront our mistakes or relive painful moments. But if we are to grow and learn in order to move forward, it is incumbent upon us all to take moments out of our lives and reflect.

Our community is strongest when we help each other through change or just assist by giving support. I and the rest of the clergy are here to help if you need it. Sometimes, talking with a neutral party is helpful when we want to adjust something in our lives or just need someone to listen. As we move from Pesach to Shavuot, from Exodus to the Revelation at Mt. Sinai, I hope we will all embrace the concept of change and bask in the light that radiated from Moses’ face as he came down the mountain.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT

Shalom Chaverim,

As our April showers have turned to May flowers, I hope you are enjoying our springtime weather and planning opportunities to spend quality time with your family and friends. This is usually the time in our CBS Presidents’ term that they begin to reflect upon their two years in their privileged role as your President and prepare to pass the baton to their successor. If you read the April bulletin or noticed the posting of the 2023-24 Board of Trustees slate on the office window, you are aware that the recommendation of the Board is for me to remain as your President for a third (and final) year. Our Congregation must approve the slate (and our budget) at our CBS Annual Meeting which is scheduled for Monday, May 15th. Please join us to learn about how your dues and generous donations are being utilized in making CBS such a vibrant community and to learn about how your lay leaders and staff tirelessly work on your behalf.

Many of our congregants have asked - Bob, ‘What were you thinking, agreeing to continue as President for a third year?’ as if I must have had a momentary lapse of rational thought. This question was then sometimes followed by ‘Is everything okay with the Board of Trustees?’ I would first reassure my questioners that my thinking processes are quite intact and that in fact we have one of the most enthusiastic, hard working and committed group of lay leaders in recent memory on the Board today, and that we have a strong succession plan in place. My goal, as I believe the goal has been for all my predecessors, is to be able finish what I started so my successor has the best opportunity to establish their own leadership style and to create initiatives that further our growth and development as a community. We have several projects going on right now including the completion of a Strategic Plan that will be our road map to continued growth and success as a community, and the review and change of our Governance model and by-laws that will enhance our effectiveness as a leadership group to implement our Strategic Plan.

I am thrilled to have the privilege to continue in my current role (pending your approval) and to be part of something so special for one more year. I look forward to greeting you on Shabbat mornings and sharing the bimah with such an amazing clergy team for another year. Our Board of Trustees along with our dedicated staff will continue to create more opportunities for us to learn, pray, and play together as a community, BUT we cannot do it without your assistance. More about that next month.

CANTOR’S NOTES

LIFE GOES ON by Sue C.

(edited by SS for this publication’s purposes)

I can’t remember the first time we met… But I do know that from the beginning we formed a lifetime bond. Maybe many lifetime bonds. You were comfortable, familiar as if I had known you forever.

It was so easy to just be with you. I think everyone felt that way around you. Actually when I think about it, I think you were around much longer, and before we even met, maybe even before I was born.

When I look at old pictures of my family I see you there too, in the faces and in the places. What a loyal friend you have been to all of us, showing up at every occasion...even when no one else was there. Never intrusive really, sometimes not even noticeable, sometimes you were the life of the party. When I met you, I knew you would never leave me, and you always made me feel better no matter what.

I’m not sure when all that changed; you exited as subtly and quietly as you entered. But in your wake you left your mark of … heartache. But life goes on you see, new generations are on the horizon, and we’ll be ok

As a middle aged man I have only now come to the realization that I have an addiction. Not to dismiss the anguish which other addictions cause, but I must confess that mine was to my mother. Spending time with her multiple days a week, over these past 7 ½ years, had become habitual.

I compare Grieff and Addiction based on an article I found entitled, On Mourning and Recovery: Integrating Stages of Grief and Change Toward a Neuroscience-based Model of Attachment Adaptation in Addiction Treatment.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6383361/ (author’s names embedded in the link)

They offer, (in much greater depth), “attention to the process of addiction recovery as a form of grieving in which Kubler-Ross’s Stages of Grief and Prochaska’s Stages of Change are ultimately describing complimentary viewpoints on a general process of neural network and attachment remodeling, could lead to more effective and integrative psychotherapy and medication strategies.….The parallels between love vs. becoming addicted are remarkable. The early stages of both are marked by arousal, euphoria, and increasing preoccupations with the love object (person/drug) including a growing desire to be around, and, in some way or another, to consume, be consumed by, or merge with the ‘person/ drug’. In more progressed stages, separation and withdrawal from the ‘person/drug’ correlates with a sense of loss, dysphoria, changes in sleep and appetite, and yearning, all congealing to vigorous efforts to re-establish access to the ‘person/drug’….Recognizing these parallels brings us to taking a closer look at the extent to which addiction is not just a disease of the motivational system, but a disease of the social attachment system of the brain.”

As I have completed my first two months of mourning, I know that anyone who experiences the death of a friend or family member go through similar stages, but each grieves in a unique way from anyone else. I wish each of you as much comfort from your community as with which I have been blessed.

With Mother’s Day this month I offer the final paragraph of a lovely poem/parable. (Sadly has been ascribed to multiple authors and thus I apologize that I cannot offer proper attribution to the author).

Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks, and she’s the cool hand on your brow when you're not well.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter and she's crystallized in every teardrop. She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate you… Not time...not space...not even death.

SISTERHOOD

One of our big Sisterhood projects is cooking and baking for our Pesach Kiddushim. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful variety of food that our Sisterhood volunteers prepared. A big thank you to Robin Bright for all her time and effort in organizing and planning the different recipes for Pesach and to Maria Catezone for going to the store numerous times to make sure we had all of our ingredients. A huge thank you to everyone that came out to bake as well. We could not have done it without all of you.

On Sunday, April 16th, Sisterhood joined CBS Social Action and Religious School for Mitzvah Day (Good Deeds Day). We worked on projects with the Religious School students. Thank you to the many Sisterhood members who came to show support and thank you so much to Suzy Hakimian, Social Action VP and Robyn Rosengard, School VP for allowing Sisterhood to join in this wonderful event. It was so nice that we could all come together for a good cause.

I hope that you will join us for our Culminating, Installation, and Valued Volunteer Dinner on Wednesday, May 17th. This is a special evening for Sisterhood when we thank our Sisterhood Officers and Board for all their hard work and outstanding programs this past year. We then install our new Sisterhood Officers and Board for 2023-2024. We will honor Jody Sigal as our 2023 Valued Volunteer, and will celebrate the installation of our new Sisterhood President, Elana Schrank. Fred Zimmerman will provide the entertainment for the evening. Fred is a respected Chicago actor who uses his theatrical skills, along with some trick psychology, to create the experience of Pysch-Out Cafe. Come help us celebrate this very special evening on Wednesday, May 17th .

MEN’S CLUB

The month of May is here and we are taking a bit of a breather after a very busy couple of months at CBS. We are still on a high from a memorable Men’s Club Shabbat. We had the pleasure to honor 49 previous Kavod Award Honorees and their families along with our newest Kavod Award Honoree, Norm Padnos. It was so nice to see so many Congregation Beth Shalom families celebrating together both young and old on Men’s Club Shabbat. Special thanks go to our VP of Ritual Alan Wernick and Andy Wagner for putting the service together and Michael Schnitzler for leading our Men’s Club Choir.

This month, our Men’s Club will be assisting the Religious School on Sunday, May 7th for the End of Year Bash serving hot dogs to the families. Please mark your calendar for Thursday, June 15th, our Men’s Club Golf Outing at Buffalo Grove Golf Club with dinner at Congregation Beth Shalom to follow. See flyer on page 13 of the bulletin.

Sunday, June 4th will be the Men’s Club Installation Breakfast as we install our new Executive Board and Board. Breakfast will begin at 9:30 am following Minyan.

Continuing our meet the Board series, we would like to introduce one of our Men’s Club Board Members who also sits on the CBS Executive Board, Randy Samborn. Randy was born in Toledo, Ohio. His family was very active at the Orthodox synagogue in Toledo formerly known as B’nai Jacob, now known as Congregation Etz Chayim, and this is where Randy had his Bar Mitzvah. Randy’s father, Alfred Sambornz”l, was President of B’nai Jacob and very active in the synagogue and Jewish philanthropy. Randy attended Maumee Valley Country Day School from third grade through senior year of high school. He wrote his first article about sports for his school newspaper in the seventh grade and eventually became editor-in-chief in high school. He was also active in student government, wrestled, and played soccer. He also participated in NCSY, the youth organization of Orthodox synagogues.

Randy got Potomac fever when he first visited Washington, DC, in 1974 amid Watergate and he was inspired by Woodward and Bernstein. He majored in history at Washington University in St. Louis and set his sights on law school but pursued being a journalist by writing for and editing various student publications. He happily admits that he also “studied” baseball and became an undying fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. After college, he landed his dream job as an intern for The Blade, his hometown daily newspaper. The same year, he enrolled at University of Toledo Law School and also continued working part-time at The Blade. After passing the bar, Randy continued as a full-time reporter, covering crime, the courts, and legal affairs. While at The Blade, he attended a law school party and met Hope Viner, a Chicago native who was working as a reporter in Findlay, Ohio, while attending law school in Toledo. Soon after, Hope went to work at The Blade, and they were married the following year. They have three children: Eve, who is married to Brandt McCool and lives in Louisville with a new daughter, Ali; Sarah, a third grade teacher in Wilmette; and Ben, an engineer living in Chicago.

Randy left The Blade and joined the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office as a state court prosecutor for two years. Randy and Hope then moved to Chicago and Randy became bureau chief of The National Law Journal. After six years, he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and the first full-time public information officer, serving for 20 years. Currently, Randy is the principal of Randall A. Samborn & Associates LLC, a strategic communications consultant.

Randy and Hope moved to Glenview, first joined Ezra Habonim, and then CBS. All three of their children had their B’nai Mitzvah at CBS. Randy has been active in Men’s Club as VP of House and Membership and, at the synagogue level, he was VP Membership and is currently VP Programming and is on the CBS Executive Board. The Samborn family also has been very active members with Hope in Sisterhood, the CBS Board and VP Social Action and Eve was active in CBS USY.

We thank Randy and Hope for their service to Congregation Beth Shalom and look forward to their continued involvement for years to come.

Enjoy the weather in May. See you on June 4th for our Men’s Club Installation and on June 15th for our Golf Outing.

Tracy Safron Suggests

is Mary Glickman’s latest novel. The fascinating story begins in South Carolina in June of 1997. The plot revolves around Abigail and Joe Becker, a Jewish couple from Boston. Aged somewhere in their 30’s, they have been married seven years. Abigail is a schoolteacher and Joe is a successful children’s author. They have come to spend the summer on Sweetgrass Island in a lovely home that Abigail inherited from her great aunt. If they enjoy living on the island, they might stay on past the summer.

Abigail, a beautiful woman, is described as “a marvel.” She often has male admirers, but they usually fade away when they realize Abigail is interested only in friendship. Abigail instantly attracts the attention of Billy Euston, an older man known as both the island’s acclaimed BBQ pitmaster and leading lothario. Billy befriends the couple, but his sights are set solely on Abigail. Will Abigail succumb to his charm?

Abigail and Joe settle into the island life. They enjoy the live music scene, become acquainted with the locals, buy guns, and learn to shoot them. As they adjust to the intricacies of Southern life, Abigail and Joe are stunned by the antisemitism they encounter on their idyllic island. They wonder how much they really know about the people they have gotten close to. The couple forges ahead with trying to educate their new friends about Judaism and decide to make Sweetgrass Island their permanent home. Both resolutions have shocking consequences.

Glickman describes her plot as having “several love stories, a lust story, and a murder investigation.” These themes, along with the current of antisemitism, are what make By the Rivers of Babylon a novel of great depth.
