RABBI AVERBACH’S REVELATIONS Rabbi Averbach

When my wife Vanessa began teaching at an inner-city charter school near LAX, they asked her to help coordinate a program called Students Run LA. The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge at-risk high school students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health through a life-changing experience. This is not only for physical fitness – the students spend extra time at school, feeling connected to the teachers and each other. It creates a “cando” attitude amongst the students, and helps them attain other long-term goals. With this group, they start small, learning how to run and breathe properly, then up to a 5k, 10k, and eventually a half marathon before the big 26.2 miles. Vanessa had never been a runner, but she was ready for the challenge. Over the course of her training, she found a passion – both with the students and within herself. During her time there, she ran four LA marathons, followed by half marathons in San Francisco (hills!), Jerusalem (cobblestones!), Tel Aviv (extreme heat), and Chicago. I might be forgetting a few. The trick to a marathon, or even a 5k, is the training. In a few days, we will be embarking on a marathon of our own. The services for the high holidays are not sprints – they are long and arduous and we often get lost along the way. There

are so many words, so many melodies, so much repetition, many of us feel lost. With all the standing and sitting and bowing and moments of silence, we are sometimes just playing catch-up, asking others what page we’re supposed to be on. I wonder if we can change it a bit this year. We all want to be on the same page, but sometimes the service moves too fast for us to keep up, or too slow and we are not connecting to certain liturgical prayers. This year we give you permission to go at your own pace. If you’re standing when everyone else is sitting, don’t be self-conscious. Keep doing what you need to do. If a poem or prayer or side note is keeping your attention, you don’t have to turn the page just because we call the next page. Our Mahzor is filled with beautiful poetry, inspiring midrashim, perplexing pieces of mysticism. Peruse the book – find something that helps you connect to the community, to your family, to your inner self. Or, if you are more comfortable with it, bring something else to read that is on topic that will help you through this marathon. And, if you want some guidance along the way, you know you can always find the right moment to ask us!

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT “For many Jews, Rosh Hashanah and teshuvah are annual reminders of the possibility to renew relationships with God and with each other.” – Rebecca Missel Relationships are key in our lives. There is compelling evidence that strong relationships contribute to a long, healthy and happy life. Research also indicates that relationships help you stay healthier, live longer, and reduce stress just to name a few things. Even if you merely come to Beth Shalom “just for services” you are building relationships, socializing with others and therefore impacting your health and life in a positive way. Just think if you take advantage of all we have to offer! Beth Shalom can be a place to develop relationships and enhance your life in many ways. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the key high holy days in which many of us come to pray, though we definitely socialize as well. Re-connecting with those we

may not have seen in awhile, perhaps some not since the previous year, as well as welcoming faces we may not recognize. While these holy days are of course important to us spiritually, there are many more times we can come together to be not only spiritual, but social. Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are also important holy days in which we daven and share in the joyous holidays together. A communal meal in the sukkah is a great way to meet new congregants as well as reacquaint with others you already know. The crowd is smaller, but the conversations and camaraderie are rich. I enjoy the quietness of davening as a community in a smaller group, especially after the large holidays. It is a time of tranquility and closeness with God. What better way to build that relationship? events.

I hope to see all of you at many of our holidays and L’Shana Tovah

SOCIAL ACTION CALL TO ACTION September 16th – Fall Blood Drive & Flu Shots 8:00am -1:00 pm October 6th - Don’t forget Blessing of the Pets. We will be collecting towels and small blankets for Heartland Animal Shelter. Donate to Regular Collections: Remember the ongoing collections in the cabinet next to the coatroom: nonperishable foods, pop-tabs, comics, eyeglasses, travel-sized toiletries, cell phones and charging cords.

On a monthly basis, we participate in providing a portion of the food for a dinner for PADS. This organization provides shelter, services and housing for those who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless in suburban Cook County. In July, ten Congregants and friends also helped set up and serve the dinner and set up sleeping accommodations for the guests for that evening. It was inspiring talking to the guests and hearing some of their stories. A special thank you to Denise and Jon Handler, Linda Eisenberg, Andy Widen, Joyce Rabinowitz, Fern Roseman, Toni Rosen, Kathy Klein and Marc Weinstein for helping serve and also to those who help donate food on an ongoing basis.

If you are interested in helping provide the meal or serving at a future date, please contact Sara Weinstein at SocialActionVP@BethShalomNB.org

NEW PRAYER OPTIONS ON SHABBAT MORNINGS! Congregation Beth Shalom is excited to offer two new options for experiencing Shabbat morning. In addition to our popular monthly Study Minyan with the Rabbis, and Shabbat Yoga with Joanna Kaplan, our Ritual Director, Cantor Raquel Gershon, will be offering the following: Spirit of Shabbat: Join Cantor Raquel on alternate months from 9:30-10:30 for an alternative prayer experience. Using niggunim (wordless melodies), kavanot (inspirational readings), simple prayers and percussion, as well as moments of quiet reflection, we will experience the transcendent “taste of the world to come” (mei-ein olam haba) that is Shabbat. At 10:30, participants may choose to attend study minyan or the regular service in the sanctuary. Open to post bar/bat mitzvah and older (adults and teens).

Learners’ Service: This service/class meets with Cantor Raquel one shabbat every other month from 9:30 – 10:30 to enable those who have difficulty following the service to practice at a slower pace. We will not only practice singing some of the congregational melodies, but will learn about the meaning of some of the Shabbat prayers. Ability to read Hebrew not required. After the hour, participants may choose to attend study minyan or the regular service in the sanctuary. This service is open to anyone ages 13 - 100+ who would like to feel more comfortable in shabbat morning services.

Dates: Sept. 15, Nov. 3, Jan. 19, Mar. 16 & May 18

Q&A WITH CBS STAFF Q&A WITH BETH SHALOM STAFF MEMBER LISA ORLOV, EDUCATION AND PROGRAMMING ASSITANT

Q: When did you start working at CBS and what is your position here? A: I started working at CBS this summer and I am the Education and Programming Administrative Assistant. Q: What do you like most about working at CBS? A: Everyone I have met thus far, both staff and congregants, have been so nice. I’ve also enjoyed seeing people at CBS who I haven’t seen in years. Q: What’s one thing that you want people to know about you? A: I am a huge Michigan Wolverines fan since I have two sons who are currently sophomores and one daughter who graduated from there last April. Go Blue! Q: What would you do if you won the lottery? A: First I would pay off all of my kids’ college tuition and then I would buy a very large Disney World timeshare so that my whole family could be together in the happiest place on Earth. Q: Where is your favorite vacation destination? A: Anywhere with my husband and kids. If it’s a Disney cruise with all of them, I’m extra happy! Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? A: Each holiday is very special in its own way. I love hamantashen and making brisket. Q: What is the best part of your job? A: I’m looking forward to seeing lots of my old students. Q: What is your favorite childhood memory? A: Seders at my grandparent’s house with all of my cousins were very special. I loved those times even though I don’t ever remember finding the Afikomen. Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? A: I would love to be able to heal others, both of permanent issues and temporary sickness.

YOUTH/YOUNG FAMILY PROGRAMMING Matt Rissien

Hag Sameach!

It’s so hard to believe the holidays are already upon us. Every year, after the chairs have all been placed in the main sanctuary for High Holidays, many of us like to go all the way in the back to the stage and see all the empty seats. It’s amazing to think that as the holidays approach we see so many people fill those seats, and then realize this is only ONE location. We are so fortunate here at Congregation Beth Shalom to have such a vibrant and thriving congregation. I love that we all come together on the holidays to pray together and be together as one community. Every year I think of how lucky I am to be a part of the CBS family. The other nice thing about September is that our programming year officially is under way! Our USY lounge nights have already begun, and we followed up last year’s CHUSY Region Chapter of the Year award with more than 50 USY’ers at our kickoff lounge night. Please let any 9th-12th graders know that they are welcome at our programs, Thursday nights from 7-9 pm in the Gloss Youth Lounge. I would also like to talk about our Young Family, 3rd-5th Grade and Kadima middle school programs. In September, the Youth Department is partnering with the Religious School for Tashlich (September 16th), Sukkah decorating (September 23rd) and the synagogue-wide Sukkah dinner (September 27th). We have a lot of really great programs planned for all ages, and I can’t wait to see everyone at our programming throughout the year. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding youth programming, please e-mail me at MRissien@BethShalomNB.Org or 847-498-4100. Thanks, Matt Rissien

Families with children up to Pre-K, join us for challah making, stories, and songs! Sing songs and hear a story, then you can twist your own challah with the dough we provide. Bake it at home, filling your house with the warm and delicious smells of Shabbat!

KERUV KORNER Shalom Chaverim, Wow, the summer seems to be flying by. But the good news is that we are rapidly approaching a wonderful holiday season of reflection and celebration. Over the years, I have had many opportunities to work with people who are dealing with interfaith marriage related issues. As a Clinical Psychologist, Keruv consultant and Hearing Men’s Voices facilitator, I have led men’s groups and met with individuals and families. Many of these people are struggling with the relationship choices their children are making. At the heart of their conflict is their own sense of loss and their feeling that their children are rejecting their Jewish values. My hope for some of these parents who are conflicted that their children are committing to life partners who are not Jewish, is for them to not draw a line in the sand in a way that shuts down communication (i.e. refusing to attend the wedding, making unrealistic demands, etc). As parents, we are inevitably challenged to balance our own personal integrity and values system with the discomfort over the choices our children make, whether it be friends, college, career, or relationships. Acceptance of is not the same as agreement with these choices. In my work with these folks I will often ask the parents who are particularly distraught to consider modifying their current position by telling themselves “not yet”. For example, ‘I am not yet ready to move forward instead of I will not reconsider my position.’ As you may surmise, I am a strong proponent of engagement vs. disengagement and embracing vs. rejecting. However, I also understand that acceptance is a process, but a line in the sand drawn too quickly becomes a wall of silence. The disillusion of a parent/child relationship does not strengthen Judaism or the Jewish people.

enough. They are getting married next summer so I will likely have the opportunity as wedding plans unfold to practice what I preach. To be continued….

Bob Spector

My holiday hope for all of you as you reflect upon your lives, relationships, hopes, aspirations, dreams and maybe even disappointments during this holiday season is that you hold onto what is most near and dear to you, and that if you have disappointed a loved one or been disappointed that you change the “not” to a “not yet”. As always, I welcome your thoughtful comments and feedback. I can be reached at cbskeruv@gmail.com. On behalf of the Keruv/Interfaith Marriage Initiative Committee, L’Shana Tovah!

Within the past year, my son has become engaged to his college sweetheart, Kayla. She is an amazing woman and she is not Jewish. There was a time when I would have said ‘she is not Jewish, but she is an amazing woman as if I had to be a bit apologetic (sound familiar?). I’m not sure to whom I would have been apologetic to, but nonetheless it would have represented a belief that she was not quite good SEPTEMBER 2018 • VOLUME 64 ISSUE 34

MEN’S CLUB Dan Sher

I am extremely excited to begin my second year as CBS Men’s Club President. The Board has been working hard planning many new events and initiatives. I would like to welcome all of the new members to the Synagogue and encourage you to get involved.

The board decided this year to try something different and we are doing our opening membership dinner after the holidays this year. Because of that (and some last minute changes) we have not sent out our membership packet as early as we normally do. Shortly, you will be receiving the Men’s Club mailing with your dues statement and schedule of upcoming events. Please complete the form and mail in your check unless you pay directly with your CBS annual dues commitment. The success of our Men’s Club is a result of the dedication of its board and all of our dues paying members. This year, dues will remain $36, and as in the past, a portion of your dues will be allocated to the Youth Scholarship Fund to support our youth. Just a reminder that the deadline to sign up for the Men’s Club Trip to Israel (November 11-18, 2018) being led by Rabbi Melman is September 11th. It is almost sold out – I think we have one or two more rooms available and that is it, so if you are interested please contact either Rabbi Melman or me. It really is going to be an amazing trip and we are so excited to be doing it. We are going to have a blast this year! Join us for friendship and education, and enjoy some lox and bagels along the way! We are a better group with you than without you! In closing, Beth, Spencer and I would like to wish each of you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. L’Shana Tova! May you all be inscribed in the Book of Life.
