RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS It seems very strange to be writing an October bulletin article with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah already behind us. School is in full swing, both secular and religious, and hopefully we’re starting to feel a sense of routine returning to our lives. Rabbi Ferratier

Judaism has its own routines as well. In fact, many people, Jews and non-Jews alike, criticize traditional Judaism as being overly-focused on routines of daily prayer, and the cycles and norms that Jewish law sets out for As a child, I used to think of us. Just like our mundane daily rouroutine as being boring. CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM • NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS • 847-498-4100 • WWW.BETHSHALOMNB.ORG

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim,

The weeks are flying by, the 5782 Holiday season is behind us, and summer has turned to fall. Maybe it is an aging thing, but it seems like the clock is moving faster. There are many wonderful programs on the schedule to look forward to this fall at CBS. However, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage on, and it is starting to feel like forever since we had the freedom of movement to travel, to socialize, and to attend meetings, services, and social events at our shul without fear of harming ourselves or others. In my September column I referred to the power of the TOPUACH and positive thinking. I still believe in the strength of this metaphorical apple (please re-read my September column for context); however, I want to share my thoughts as to why you may be struggling with maintaining a positive perspective.

Mental health professionals, clergy, doctors, nurses, and other caregiving professionals have come to recognize that we are vulnerable to what we call “compassion fatigue” without proper self-care. Simply stated, the more we care for others in the form of compassion, empathy, and concern without having adequate resources of getting equally replenished, the sadness, hurt and pain we experience as caregivers can become absorbed into our souls. This can make us susceptible to burnout. I believe the pandemic has demanded that all of us have become caregivers in ways that we could never have imagined, and we are falling short in our ability to replenish our souls. We have experienced loss, having to frequently mourn in isolation. We have not been able to spend nearly enough quality time with our friends and loved ones. We have had to live in a chronic state of concern, if not fear, for our own health and that of our loved ones. Yet we continue to offer support to others who are equally suffering. Unfortunately, when the equation of giving to others and receiving back becomes too far imbalanced, we are vulnerable to compassion fatigue. This can be experienced by most as feelings such as anger, sadness, impatience, and irritability, and by some a profound sense of loneliness and despair. How many of us have experienced both in ourselves and from colleagues, friends, and loved ones uncharacteristic impatience or insensitivity? I know that I have regrettably fallen short at times. I share this with you not to create a bleak picture of our continued challenge, but to offer understanding as part of the solution. A solution that is literally staring you in the face. Through understanding and self-awareness comes kindness; from kindness comes connection; and from connection comes community, and that my friends is what Congregation Beth Shalom offers all of us. The power and strength of many far surpasses the power and strength of the individual. We, and other communities you have in your lives, are the solution. We are such a strong people who have survived millennia of challenges; this pandemic will not break our spirits because we have each other, and the power of the topuach. May 5782 bring you good health and happiness. B’Shalom, Bob

CANTOR’S NOTES Cantor Stoehr

With the holiday season just behind us one might think, ‘I guess I’m done praying for a while, how much can one person pray anyhow’? Time to Pray I got up early one morning and rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish that I didn't have time to pray. Problems just tumbled about me, and heavier came each task. "Why doesn't God help me?" I wondered. He answered, "You didn't ask." I wanted to see joy and beauty, but the day toiled on, gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn't show me. He said, "But you didn't seek." I tried to come into God's presence; I used all my keys at the lock. God gently and lovingly chided, "My child, you didn't knock." I woke up early this morning, and paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish that I had to take time to pray. (Author source uncertain, one attribution says Alan Grant)

I may have shared this poem once before but it felt necessary to do so again. Why? Each morning Jewish tradition bids us to thank God for “opening the eyes of the blind”. Blind to what? To whom? Maybe to our own shortcomings. It is enticing us to be conscious of the Age of Wokeness, a state of being aware, especially of social problems, in which we are living. It is a wonderful gift to be alert and aware to the issues in the world and to walk with a democratic heart beating within you, but sometimes we go overboard with our sympathetic selves at the cost of missing our own needs. In that spirit, biblical law reminds us to give Tzedakah generously, to the point of tithing, ten percent of one’s ownings. However, it warns us not to be over generous to the point which might place one in the position of needing another person’s help because they are no longer self-sufficient. So too with being “woke”, we have to not be so smitten with openness to others that we neglect our own ‘family’. Rabbi Aaron Starr sermonized saying: “I believe that the Jews cannot simply seek to check the box on every progressive issue. More to the point, not everyone who claims to be a victim, is exclusively the victim. The Middle East conflict is case in point. Palestinian claims of victimhood and, at Israel’s right to exist with safety and security as a Democratic Jewish state, this is an area in which I am considerably and profoundly unwoke. Despite Israel being, especially as compared to her neighbors, among the most progressive countries, in racial and gender equality, climate change and LGBTQ+ rights, Israel is nevertheless subject not only to criticism but also to boycotts, divestments and sanctions….The decision to choose between Pro-Israeli or Pro-Palestinian is a binary fraught with error.” We, as Jews, must keep our eyes and minds open (‘wokeism’), and be the exemplars of humane living and treatment of others, but not so much so that we are blind to what is happening to our own people. We must defend our people and our land, even if there are complex issues with which we still grapple. We, even while living here in the Diaspora, can demand fairness and lobby the Israeli government to continue to work to make progress towards peace, as they have for decades. We must be woke enough, however, to read the reports from inside Israel as well as the all-powerful eye in the sky news reporting in the US, giving Israel even benefit of the doubt, for they have been ‘woke’ since the days of Sinai. We need to think, see and pray some more to help ourselves wake up. ‘God we pray to you to open our eyes. Bolster our inner constitution so that we are never too weary to fight for justice and truth. We must call upon our inner selves to toss away complacency and apathy. Shake our conscience if we seem to be walking in our sleep. We naively believe at times that we are awake, but knowing our human inadequacies we pray to you each day to awaken us, hopefully before it is too late. Let us not fail or falter in our quest to bring into Your world a new era of reasonable and balanced ‘Wokeness’.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Stacy Ybarra

What a wonderful start to the school year! The teachers and I are enjoying having so many of the students in-person this year as well as seeing our small groups and individual students online. We also appreciated the opportunities on August 29th and on Simchat Torah to meet parents.

With a break from the holidays we are moving forward in our curriculum. Our 3rd through 6th graders are gaining momentum with our self-paced Hebrew program, Aleph Champ. This month our 7th graders will begin their Holocaust Studies Unit with Mark Gelfeld from the Illinois Holocaust Museum. We have also begun our Shabbat learning with our 6th and 7th graders. This year is once again a year of continuing change. Please keep in communication with us so that together we can strategize and positively move ahead. B’shalom, Stacy Ybarra Director of Education

SISTERHOOD In my last article, I talked about how small our congregation can feel when you are involved and attend programs. I did not expect to touch on this theme again so soon, but something happened recently that really drove this point home for me. As many of you know, my mom passed away. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful the Beth Shalom Family has been for my family and me. The arms of our synagogue family wrapped me in its embrace, and we truly felt the love and care that CBS personifies. Our clergy, although wonderful on the bimah, personally, are some of the most amazing people I have ever encountered. They jumped to help from our first call in the middle of the night through the funeral and Shiva. I am so fortunate to work with and become friends with the outstanding ladies of the Sisterhood. I am so grateful for their overwhelming love and support. Men’s Club Presidents, Steve Lessman and Andy Wagner, as well as other members, were here for support right away, so too were members of the Board of Trustees. I can never truly express my love and gratitude for everything the CBS Family has done. Jackie Zelkowitz

So let me invite you to participate in the programming that Sisterhood has planned. Join us, and begin to enjoy what CBS and the Sisterhood do. Reap the benefits of your membership. Allow me to introduce you to others in attendance so that you too will feel the community that is CBS. Our Opening Luncheon will be on Wednesday, October 13 th. We are very fortunate to have Susan Abrams, Chief Executive Officer of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center as our featured speaker. That weekend, Saturday, October 16th, Sisterhood and Men’s Club have a wonderful joint program planned. The New Tradition Chorus will open the evening followed by a program of Interactive Game Show Trivia. On Wednesday, November 3 rd, we will host Jewish Book Month Author, Fern Schumer Chapman, along with discussion facilitator, Judy Levin. I hope that you can join us for these events. Of course, all of our events will be offered inperson and via Zoom. Please save the date of Sunday, November 7 th, for our Annual Holiday Boutique. We will be having lots of exciting vendors. It will be a great time for all of us to get our holiday gifts. Our Sisterhood is very proud to be a consistent recipient of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism Jewels in the Crown Award. This award is presented at WLCJ International Convention and awards Sisterhoods who have excelled in the areas of Education/ Program, Community Service/World Affairs, and Women’s League Activities. Other areas include being an active Sisterhood in WLCJ, participating in the Torah Fund Campaign, and attendance at Central Great Lakes Region Conference. Yet, another reason to be an active member of our CBS Sisterhood.

  

For more information or to register, please visit the CBS Events Page or the Men’s Club Square site page at https:// cbsmensclubevents.square.site. Continuing our “meet the CBS Men’s Club Executive Board” series, this month we introduce you to Lawrence LeVine, VP Programming. With full disclosure, Steve has known Lawrence since he was three years old, as they lived four houses from each other. Lawrence’s parents, Jill and Harold, are long-standing members of Congregation Beth Judea in Long Grove. Lawrence celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Beth Judea and began his involvement in Jewish life as a Madrich (teacher assistant) in the Sunday School. After graduating from Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, he then attended Roosevelt University, majoring in Communications. While at Roosevelt, he worked at CBS as Youth Advisor and then Youth Director. After many years here, he then began to work full time for the JCC running the Perlstein Resort and Conference Center at Camp Chi in Lake Delton, Wisconsin followed by being in charge of Family Engagement for the JCC. Currently, Lawrence works for H&H Purchasing, where he helps overnight camps and day camps procure all of the supplies they need, from food to bandages to footballs. In 2004, Lawrence met his wife Amy on JDate. Soon they realized their connections with Congregation Beth Shalom, as Amy is the daughter of Jill and Les Olefsky!!! They have been married since 2006, and they have a daughter, Meital (9), and a son, Noah (4). Lawrence has been involved in the Jewish community his entire life. Many would say Lawrence knows everyone, and, if you need something, “just ask Lawrence”. He became involved in Men’s Club soon after he got married and became a member of CBS. Lawrence immediately began helping in the kitchen cooking breakfasts, became involved in our Lox Box Program and then was Recording Secretary, VP House-Special Events, VP Ways and Means, and now VP Programming. When he was VP Ways and Means, he completely revamped our payment program for Lox Box setting up easy online payments, which we now use for all Men’s Club programs. I asked Lawrence about his most recent community involvement. During the pandemic, Lawrence organized more than forty food trucks to visit his neighborhood in Buffalo Grove. This was great for the struggling food trucks, and his neighbors didn’t have to go very far to get a variety of great food. Thank you Lawrence, for all that you do, and we look forward to your involvement in CBS Men’s Club for years and years to come. We wish you a great month of October and hope to see you at many of our special events. Steve Lessman and Andy Wagner

LIBRARY Tracy Safron Suggests Ronald H. Balson’s Defending Britta Stein and Naomi Ragen’s An Observant Wife are wonderful new books. Coincidentally, both novels have plots that revolve around returning characters. Balson reunites his readers with Chicago based attorney Catherine Lockhart and her husband detective Liam Taggart. Catherine is defending ninety-two-year-old Britta Stein, who grew up in Denmark during World War II. Caught on camera, Britta admits to spray painting the words liar, traitor, betrayer, and Nazi collaborator on the wall outside of Ole Henryks’s popular restaurant. Ole is ninety-five and claims he helped Danish Jews flee to Sweden aboard fishing boats to escape deportation and Nazi concentration camps. A prominently placed photo in his restaurant offers proof. Beloved by many Chicagoans, Ole is soon to be inducted into the hall of fame of the Danish-American Association of Chicago for his heroism during the war. Britta’s defense is that she’s not guilty of defaming Ole’s character because the words she wrote are true. Balson crafts a thrilling story of Britta’s past, her association with Ole, and the devastating impact he had on her family’s future. Ragen’s An Observant Wife continues the story of widower Yaakov and new convert Leah. The novel begins with their wedding. Leah loves her husband and ready-made family and she quickly restores order and joy to Yaakov’s chaotic household. Unfortunately, she soon becomes the focus of viscous gossip from her Boro Park neighbors. The prominent grandmother of Yaakov’s children tries to help the family and becomes the buffer between Leah and her community foes. Yet nothing compares to Leah’s seventeen-year-old stepdaughter Shaindele’s struggle. Shaindele blames herself for her mother’s tragic death. This misplaced guilt leads her to extremely risky behavior. Expulsion from school is threatened unless she accepts counseling from the school’s approved male therapist. Help is the opposite of what Shaindele receives from this man. Yaakov and Leah fight to protect Shaindele but are stunned to discover the shocking realities of their insular community. Ragen provides her reader with a thought-provoking and discussion worthy view of the orthodox world. Tracy’s recommendations are available for check-out from the CBS library!
