RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES We have just concluded our holiest season of the year. The last couple of months have allowed us time for introspection and have given us the opportunity to take stock of our lives. It was a period to look back and celebrate the joyous moments we had, whether by ourselves or with family and friends, and also to recount sad or challenging times we had. It is not a simple exercise to look back over the last year and think about what it has meant to us. In the Jewish year that has just concluded, Congregation Beth Shalom was the recipient of two new Torah scrolls. Thanks to Keith and Marci Shapiro and David and Jan Lasky, our synagogue houses two beautiful, easy to read and light Sifrei Torah. The Shapiro Torah came to us just as the holidays were concluding last year and the Lasky Torah was finished and dedicated towards the end of August. How lucky we all are to benefit from these families and these new Sifrei Torah. Until August, I had only witnessed one other Torah completion but was not part of the ceremony, simply an observer. To see a Sefer Torah arrive, with a sofer (scribe), incomplete, knowing that people were going to have a hand in the mitzvah of writing a Torah, was powerful beyond words. This particular Torah is very special to the Lasky family, as it is dedicated in memory of beloved individuals. Those

souls may not have been physically present, but there is no doubt they were with us in the room as each person or family took a turn writing a letter in the Torah.

We are taught that writing just one letter is as if we had written an entire Torah ourselves. As I sat down to write one of the final letters, I held the feather quill along with the sofer. I was in awe. I was overcome with emotion. I had never felt so physically connected to the Torah as I did in that moment. There were tears in my eyes as I thought about the fact that our tradition reminds us that each of us has our own special letter in the Torah. At that moment, I believed the letter Tzaddi was mine. There are moments in life that we don’t forget such as our wedding, the birth of a child, the Bar or Bat Mitzvah of our children. I will add to the list the writing of a Sefer Torah. I will remember staring at our beautiful and ancient text. I will remember the joy on the faces of those assembled. I will think about these moments every time the Torah is read. May each of us in this New Year of 5779 find our own special letter in the Torah and discover something new to learn in our Jewish world.

CBS NEWS

Sitting in High Holiday services and looking at the sanctuary full of congregants, we could not help but reflect on how lucky we feel to be part of such an amazing community. It was truly an honor to have served as cochairs of the Hineynu Campaign, playing a small role in helping to secure the future of our Beth Shalom family. While the formal Campaign has ended, we will continue to accept commitments to the endowment. Further, we will be shifting our focus to growing our Legacy Society. Please look for more information and consider including Beth Shalom in your wills or estate plans. We can never say thank you enough to our fantastic committee who dedicated countless hours to this cause. And thanks to each and every one of our donors who understood the necessity of securing a healthy endowment and contributed to the Hineynu Campaign. We would like to acknowledge those participants whose generous donations endowed the following naming opportunities: i i i i

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place" - George Bernard Shaw "The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply" - Stephen Covey We can learn a lot from these two quotes. Oftentimes our perception is that we have told someone something but maybe they did not get what we intended. Or assumptions are made that others know what it is we want. But the key is in the second statement. We all need to be good listeners. There is so much you can learn when you just listen to someone. You can then relate to the conversation, however, to truly listen is to truly connect. This is what I hope for CBS. I want more of us to connect with one another. I want more of us to have deeper relationships with one another. I want more of us to see CBS as a family. Via listening to others and making connections, we feel welcomed, we feel comforted, and we feel heard. We want to hear all of you at CBS. We want this to be a place of comfort and joy, homey and welcoming. By listening to you, we can continue to hone our programs to suit your needs. We want this to be a place of service to you, but also YOUR place. A place to come and be heard, feel welcomed, and therefore you can feel more comfortable interacting and engaging in various ways. I hope to see and hear from you all at events, services, and activities throughout 5779 at CBS. Congregation Beth Shalom’s Blessing of the Pets

DONATIONS

FUND OF THE MONTH CBS Fund of the Month CBS Youth Endowment Fund

Each year we select a fund of the month in October that usually includes a matching gift. We are extremely lucky to share that this will happen once again. We know that everyone recognizes and appreciates having a strong youth presence. With this fund we are giving our teens the opportunity to not only raise monies but to give monies away each year to their select special funds. We are educating the youth of CBS to understand the importance of philanthropy and the components that go into an endowment fund. The youth were presented with an opportunity for a matching gift of up to $15,000 and they have been working hard on raising these funds in order to have a grand total of $30,000. To date we have raised $6,000 towards the match. This fund will allow the CBS youth leaders to annually allocate the interest earned from this fund to charities and various CBS programming. This endowment fund is unique because it is solely the responsibility of our teen leaders to determine the allocations. The window to raise an additional $9,000 ends December 31, 2018. The Youth at CBS will continue hosting various fundraisers through the end of the year to meet the matching grant. This truly is an opportunity for our youth to continue to learn about philanthropy and endowment, while giving back to our community.

Shalom! I hope everyone had a meaningful High Holiday experience this past month. Whether you were at Wood Oaks or CBS, I want to thank everyone who participated in our Youth programming and services. It always amazes me to look out and see so many families and congregants coming together for the holidays. If you did attend any of our Family or Youth services, I would love to hear your feedback. We are constantly trying to come up with the best programming and I would love your input.

October brings us the Parsha Noach, which means we are bringing back our Animal Show!! On Thursday, October 11th, our USY chapter will be treated to a wild animal show, and on Sunday, October 7th, Young Family-5th graders will get to enjoy it as well! SEND-A-KID-TO-ISRAEL PARTNERSHIP (SKIP) S.K.I.P. = SEND-A-KID-TO-ISRAEL PARTNERSHIP This is the time of the year when our congregation offers our third, fourth, fifth, or sixth graders and their parents or grandparents an opportunity to participate in S.K.I.P. The SEND-A-KID-TO-ISRAEL PARTNERSHIP is an agreement that provides a special savings plan for future trips to Israel for Chicago area youngsters. Beginning in any of the grades listed above, a family contributes $70 per year, our synagogue underwrites $100 and JUF funds $85. Thus, each year a total of $255 is placed in a special, interest-bearing account. If your child participates for the full seven years (grades 3 through 9), s/he will have approximately $2000 ($1785 plus interest) saved to help meet the cost of an Israel trip. SKIP funds can be used after 9th grade and up to and including age 26 for an Israel Experience program. Of course, the hope is that your child will travel to Israel using his/her accumulated funds. However, your portion of the SKIP funds are fully refundable at any time should your child not participate in an Israel program. Our thanks to Delores and Eugene Zemsky who sponsor the David L. Zemsky SKIP Fund that helps to financially support this wonderful opportunity for our young people. Only Congregation Beth Shalom matches each SKIP participant’s $70 contribution with $100! The Zemsky SKIP Fund is the largest financial sponsorship among the Chicagoland synagogues. There will be more information about S.K.I.P. in future bulletins and, of course, a letter of invitation to the program will be mailed in November. However, please feel free to contact Faye Tatel or Lisa Orlov through the religious school office for further information at 847-498-5352 or school@bethshalomnb.org. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Congratulations to the following SKIP graduates. Their parents have completed the necessary annual financial contributions to SKIP, and they now are eligible to use the funds to help pay for an Israel program of their choice. With the help of our own Congregation Beth Shalom and the Jewish Federation of Chicago, which have matched the parents’ annual pledge, each student has approximately $1800 saved to meet the cost of a trip to Israel. Participants may use SKIP funds through age 26.

Congratulations to: Talia Ben-Dov Eden Block-Glickman Joseph Eisenberg Geoffrey Gitles Ethan Glen Gabriel Gruenberg Natalie Jeruchimowitz Matthew Silver Talia Solomon More information regarding the SKIP program will appear in the November bulletin. The Girl from Berlin is Ronald H. Balson’s outstanding new novel that will be published on October 9. Balson returns to his writing roots with a WWII driven plot featuring attorney Catherine Lockhart and private investigator Liam Taggart. Catherine and Liam travel to the Tuscan Hills of Italy to help 78-year-old Gabriella (Gabi) Vincenzo fight off eviction from her villa in Pienza. Gabi has lived there for years and refuses to leave. The acreage surrounding Gabi’s property is owned by one of Italy’s largest wine producers and their attorneys deny Gabi’s title to her land. The two Italian lawyers hired to help Gabi have given up. Prior to their meeting, Gabi sends Catherine a mysterious manuscript through which Catherine is introduced to Ada Baumgarten. Ada is born in Berlin in 1918 to an affluent Jewish family. Her father is a violinist and concertmaster of the renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Ada is a violin protégé and Balson describes her performances in melodious detail. There are no women members of any major orchestras in the world and Ada aspires to breaking gender barriers. Her family’s prominence allows them some protection from the Nazis, but their connections are not foolproof, and they are instilled with a sense of false security. The captivating narrative alternates between Ada’s past and Gabi’s present. Balson’s wonderful characters and suspenseful plot are what make The Girl from Berlin remarkable. Bravo to Balson on writing a masterpiece. It is definitely one of the best books of the year.

Jewish Book Month is an annual event on the American calendar that began 95 years ago. It started as a way to encourage book giving during Hanukkah and therefore observed the month preceding the holiday, this year November 1 - November 30. For the eighth year in a row, Spertus Institute proudly spearheads One Book | One Community as a way to celebrate Jewish Book Month and “bring readers together through the shared enjoyment and exploration of Jewish literature.“ The selection this year is Memento Park by Mark Sarvas.

MEN’S CLUB Dan Sher

I hope that everyone had a meaningful holiday season. Typically, by now the Men’s Club has been right in the middle of many of our fall events, but this year as I have explained in previous columns we were not able to do our opening dinner before the holidays and we could not do a steaks in the sukkah program because of the way the holidays (and the football schedule) fell this year. So, as of when I needed to write this letter, we still have been unable to schedule an opening speaker. Therefore, we are finally sending out an opening mailing without an opening speaker.

Men’s Club has a lot of exciting events happening this year. We have already built the sukkah and have our first Israel in Depth breakfast on October 4th (and another one on October 28th). Two programs we are doing for younger families coming up is our annual Erev Thanksgiving program where we are doing a family bingo night and we are doing a young family Chanukah bash in December. Now that registration is closed, I am also excited to tell you that 19 men from Congregation Beth Shalom are going to Israel next month. We are so excited that Rabbi Melman will be leading our first of what I hope will be a trend of Men’s Club trips to Israel. We encourage you to come join us at a meeting, at a breakfast, or at one of our upcoming events. If you are interested in getting more involved, please stop me in the building or contact me at anytime.

SOCIAL ACTION CALL TO ACTION - October October 1-31st - We will be collecting clean towels, clean small blankets, dog chews and bones, wild bird seed, paper towels and dog biscuits for various animal shelters. We will also be collecting old tennis balls and old, clean adult t-shirts for dog toys to be assembled at Mitzvah Day in November 18th. October 6th - Blessing of the Pets - all friendly pets are invited on a leash or in a carrier at 1:30 pm. Donate to Regular Collections: Remember the ongoing collections in the cabinet next to the coatroom: nonperishable foods, pop-tabs, comics, eyeglasses, travel-sized toiletries, cell phones and charging cords. If you are interested in helping with any of the above Social Action projects, please contact Sara Weinstein at SocialActionVP@BethShalomNB.org.

THANK YOU to all who supported our efforts to help the families impacted by the recent fire in Prospect Heights. Our congregants and staff contributed $1,200, and this was matched by a generous donation from the Binstein family and the Sophie Binstein Tzedekah Fund. In total, we donated $2,400 of TARGET gift cards which the Village of Prospect Heights will distribute to the families in need.

Have any leftover candy from the end of October?

Congregation Beth Shalom is collecting candy to send to our troops. HELP THANK OUR TROOPS! Collection bins will be in the Front Lobby and in the Religious School Lobby. Candy will only be collected through November 11 - Veteran’s Day Thank you for helping put smiles on the faces of our nation’s heroes. Any questions, please contact Jill Olefsky at 847-272-1758 or jolefsky@aol.com 20
