RABBI AVERBACH’S REVELATOINS Rabbi Averbach

A community member (though not a congregant) recently got upset with me that I would give a sermon in response to Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court. It should be noted that this community member has never heard me give a sermon, and was speaking in response to the idea that a religious leader might speak about something so topical as the biggest national news of the week. I understand where he is coming from – we come into our sanctuary for sanctuary from the onesided talking heads we see on television, hear on the radio, and read in the newspapers. Our religious leaders should be apolitical. While I did speak in response to Justice Kavanaugh, I did not speak about him. I did not mention him nor the high court. Previously when speaking about topical issues (mental health, guns, Israel, #MeToo, etc), I was careful not to make it a one sided diatribe. I realize that my area of expertise is not political science or international affairs, and no one is coming to shul for my opinion on these issues. But, I believe some people do come to shul for Judaism’s take on these matters. If Judaism, or any

NOVEMBER 2018 • VOLUME 66 ISSUE 36

religion, has nothing to say about the world that is unfolding around us, then it is dead. Judaism only makes sense because it is alive, because of what it has to say about the universe, millennia after it was written, because it is still prescient. People are quick to bring up the legality of politics from the bimah, but the Johnson Amendment, which is mostly still in place, merely forbids the synagogue from endorsing a single candidate. We are certainly allowed to make known our take on any pressing issue that could affect us as a community and us as individuals. My goal is to be a rabbi to the community – not to a segment of the community who happens to agree with my politics. If someone fears for what I will say when given a microphone, and therefore refuses to welcome me into their lifecycle events, then I have failed that family and the entire community. But if I have nothing of note to say – if my understanding of the Torah in 2018 is the same as it was in any other year, then I am an unnecessary part of the Beth Shalom family. No matter what news comes down the pike, I hope we can create a safe space to discuss it together. I am always willing to listen.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT It’s always a bit scary to walk into a place unsure of who you will know. Who will you sit with, and will you feel left out? It’s normal to feel this way, even as adults. I experienced a solution to this problem many years ago, when a friend, who also is a congregant here, reached out to me and invited me to join them at a Hadassah event. Her invitation to join her made me feel comfortable and welcome and I subsequently became very involved in several Hadassah programs. Think about who you would like to invite (a fellow congregant or even a prospective member) to join us at an event! This accomplishes several things. First, you know you have a friend to talk to and a peer to sit with and converse, therefore the fear of going alone is taken away. Second, when you bring someone else to an event with you, you are engaging them, and perhaps alleviating their fears about attending alone! So now, you each have support. Subsequent events will become easier to attend because you will meet more people, become more vested, and feel more comfortable walking in the door. Think of the snowball effect this will have if we all invited someone along to our next event, and then we brought someone new after that, and the first person we brought brings someone else, and so on... Helping others to see the beauty in what we have to offer, making CBS feel more like home to them, and opening doors to new possibilities, is what it’s all about. Who can you ask to join you? I look forward to seeing you and your “guests” at our upcoming events. B’Shalom Debbie Solomon

CHANUKAH Chanukah 5779

At this time of year, when the world feels dark and cold, many cultures have a way of bringing a little bit of light and life into their homes. They decorate the outside of their homes with extra lights, they drag giant evergreens into their dens to remind them that life keeps going even in the most dreary of times, they set ablaze a special log. Jews similarly bring light, songs, games, and warm food into their homes to commemorate the miracle of Chanukah. The holiday celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BCE after Syrian Greeks devastated it under the command of their leader Antiochus IV. A small band of Jews (known as the Maccabees), led by Judah and the other four sons of Mattathius, defeated these Hellenizing forces in a three-year long battle. The real miracle of the holiday is that an unlikely troupe of guerilla fighters beat the mightiest army in the land. Since the fighters missed the eight-day long holiday of Sukkot, they celebrated their victory for eight days, hence Chanukah is still celebrated for eight days. A few centuries later, historian Flavius Josephus wrote his explanation of the holiday, focusing on the miracle that one cruse of oil, barely enough to last one night, kept burning for eight nights, enough time for someone to run out and replenish the stock with oil holy enough to be used in the rededicated Temple Menorah. Josephus refers to the holiday as the Festival of Lights. For this reason, we light our chanukiyah (Chanukah Menorah) for eight nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev (this year, the first night is Sunday, December 2). The mitzvah of Chanukah is “pirsumei nisah – publicizing the miracle,” so we place the chanukiyah in the window facing the street or in a prominent place in the home. We sing songs, eat foods fried in oil (like latkes and doughnuts), and play dreidl and other games inside where it is warm. When we light the candles, we say the following blessings. (Also, below is a reminder of how to light the candles each night.) Please join us for Chanukah Happening on Tuesday, December 4th where we light the chanukiyah as a Congregation.

Q&A WITH CBS STAFF Q&A WITH BETH SHALOM STAFF MEMBER SUSAN KARLINSKY, CBS CONTROLLER Q: What year did you start working at CBS and what is your position here? A: I started at CBS in a newly created position of Controller in January, 2012.

LIBRARY

Daylight Saving Time Ends November 4th 2:00 am Set clocks back 1 hour

Q: What do you like most about working at CBS? A: I consider it a privilege to work at CBS; we are a thriving and forward thinking nonprofit in the Jewish community. We have an amazing team of clergy, staff, and board members that make CBS the special place that it is for everyone. Q: What’s your favorite memory/moment from working at CBS? A: I love working with Cantor Steve and the HUGS committee on ritual programming for families with special needs. This gives me the opportunity to be creative and to make CBS a more welcoming place for all. Q: Where is your favorite vacation destination? A: My husband and I enjoy traveling, and we are definitely “city” people. We are looking forward to traveling with the group from CBS on the upcoming March of the Living trip to Poland and Israel. I really enjoy the preparation before the trip – learning about the places we will visit, understanding local customs and traditions and trying to fit as much as possible into a short few days! Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? A: My favorite Jewish holiday is Rosh Hashanah. I especially love spending time with my family and extended family to celebrate the New Year with a festive meal featuring our favorite family recipes. Q: What is the best part of your job? A: Supporting the professional staff and the dedicated VPs on the Board of Trustees. They all take their responsibilities very seriously and I do my very best to provide them with the nitty gritty details they need to do their job. Q: What is your favorite childhood memory? A: Waiting on the street corner for my Dad to come home from work. He would call my Mom just before he left work, and my brothers and I would run to the corner about two blocks from our house til Dad got there… then we all jumped in for the final block to our house with one of us in Dad’s lap steering the car! Q: What has been your favorite program or biggest success at CBS? A: I have really enjoyed sharing my passion for philanthropy while teaching the high school classes here at CBS. We created the ACHARAI Teen Foundation to educate and empower our future leaders so they can become lifelong philanthropists.

The Northbrook Clergy Association's Annual Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service Wednesday November 21, 2018 7:00 PM Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center 2001 Waukegan Road Techny, IL

Q: What has been the biggest change at Beth Shalom since you began working here? A: Planning for the transition when Harvey Gold, z”l, former executive director, decided to retire….Trying to anticipate the congregation’s angst after having the same leader for 40 years and feeling confident that Michael Garlin would succeed in his new role with the strong support of the experienced staff at CBS.

All Are Welcome!

YOUTH/B’NAI MITZVAH Matt Rissien

GOBBLE GOBBLE EVERYONE, Thanksgiving is here! This past month was packed with programs, including animal shows for USY and Young Family Programming, the USY BIG Babka Bake and more!

I’d like to point out our upcoming Kadima 6th-8th grade Chicago Blackhawks game on November 18th. Thanks to the generosity of the HRG Sefer Haftorah Fund, this program is only $50 for dinner, a bus to the game and the game ticket. Our synagogue is so fortunate to have funds specifically put in place to lower costs of youth programming. Congregation Beth Shalom really puts an emphasis on the importance of a strong youth program, and these funds make our program stand out amongst all the others. I would also like to compliment our CBS USY board and chapter on starting the programming year on another strong note. Every week we have more than 30 teens in the youth lounge for lounge nights, and we have one of the largest delegations from the region attending the CHUSYFest regional convention this month. I would also like to point out that our very own past president David Zelkowitz was one of the co-planners for the convention. We have so much to be proud of here at CBS USY and throughout our entire youth department! I want to wish everyone an amazing Thanksgiving and a great month ahead. -Matt Rissien

SEND-A-KID-TO-ISRAEL PARTNERSHIP (SKIP)

SKIP is a cooperative program in which families, congregations, and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago each contribute funds toward an Israel Experience program for participating students. The SKIP goal is for each student to travel to Israel as part of his/her Jewish education. Enrollment begins during a student’s 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and continues through 9th grade. Both public school and day school students are eligible. The combined annual contribution for our children at Beth Shalom is $255 ($70 from each family, matched by $100 from our congregation and $85 from Federation). Although the SKIP program may not cover the entire cost of a trip to Israel, the funds make a considerable reduction in the expense. Remember that the funds are in an interestbearing account. Furthermore, families in financial need can apply for scholarships from other sources. Enrollment is arranged through our synagogue. After the initial enrollment form is completed, we are responsible for the rest – submitting the partnership agreements, transferring the funds and reporting our children’s names to the Federation. Enrollment information will arrive in early November, with a deadline of December 1st for the submission of forms and checks. There are many wonderful Israel Experience programs out there – everything from internship programs in various fields to volunteer programs to sports-based programs to study programs of almost any length. Your child’s SKIP funds (as well as Gift of Israel funds) can provide the opportunity of a lifetime. Birthright Israel is a wonderful program but not everyone is guaranteed a spot on a Birthright trip. Your child’s SKIP funds ensure that he or she will be able to go to Israel at least once, if not more than once, even if Birthright Israel is not an option. Frequently Asked Questions How do I register my child? When you receive the enrollment information, you need to complete the forms and send a $70 check, made payable to Congregation Beth Shalom, by December 1st. What if I forget to sign up in 3rd grade? May I start my child at a later date? Yes, you may begin participating when your child is in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade.

If I want to enroll my child who is currently in 4th grade, may I pay past 9th grade and make up a missing year? You may begin contributions in grades 3, 4, 5, or 6 but you may only contribute through 9th grade. If my child would like to go to Israel before the completion of 9th grade, may I use his/her funds one year earlier? S.K.I.P. ‘s goal is for funds to be used for a high school or college Israel Experience program and is designed for sophomore high school students or older. Under certain circumstances, families may be able to use a portion of their SKIP funds for 8th grade Israel Experience programs, such as Ta'am Yisrael or day school trips. Please contact our office at israelexperience@juf.org to make sure that your trip is eligible and then use the 8th grade Israel Experience Savings Request form to redeem your funds. My child is in 6th grade and I would like to begin a SKIP account. May I enroll him now and pay for the previous years (for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grades)? You certainly may enroll your child in 6th grade. However, catch-up payments are not accepted. May we use the funds for a family trip to Israel? The partnership program is designed to promote travel with a peer group. Although the synagogue and JUF support and encourage family trips, these funds are to be used when your child travels with a group of friends on his or her own young adult trip to Israel. What if we move and we join another synagogue in the Chicagoland area? If the synagogue has a S.K.I.P. program, your child’s account will be transferred and the partnership continues. Each congregation determines the amount to be contributed. After several years of contributions, my child no longer wants to travel to Israel. What happens? You will receive a complete refund of the money you deposited, plus the interest on that money. Please note that monies contributed by Congregation Beth Shalom are returned to the synagogue. Up to what age may SKIP funds be used? SKIP funds may now be used by a student through the age of 26. Enrollment information has been mailed to all Aleph and new student families. Additional forms may be picked up at our school office. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact me through the synagogue or religious school office. Hebrew Now that the holidays are over, we have begun our Hebrew program. The program is called Aleph Champ and it allows students to work at their own pace and be rewarded for their efforts and successes. Students in 3rd through 7th grade participate in the program for 30 minutes on Sundays and Tuesdays. They are also able to take the reading books and workbooks home if they want to progress more quickly. It is very exciting to see their enthusiasm and motivation. We love when the students ask for more Hebrew time!

7th Grade Holocaust Studies Our 7th Grade (Kitah Zayin) have just completed the first part of their Holocaust Unit. We had the pleasure again this year of having Mark Gelfeld, a docent at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, teach. Mark taught for 2 hours on 4 consecutive Tuesdays using the “Echoes and Reflections” curriculum from ADL, the USC Shoah Foundation and Yad Vashem. The students began by looking at the roots of anti-Semitism, a timeline of the period and then also looked at personal stories. Next the students and their parents will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Illinois Holocaust Museum led by Mark Gelfeld. Finally, based on the interests of this year’s students, our 7th grade team of teachers will design a curriculum for further understanding of this complex period in our history. Herman Broder, refugee and Holocaust survivor, struggles to eke out a small living as a ghost writer for the dynamic Rabbi Lampert, while living in Coney Island with his second wife, Yadwiga, a Polish peasant who hid him from the Nazis. Herman’s also enmeshed in a passionate affair with the beautiful Masha, and if this is not hard enough, his first wife Tamara, presumed dead, turns up at his door hoping to resume their marriage! What does this “quadrangle of desire” reveal about the nature of love, fallibility and human frailty? This is a story about the tumult of the heart, life’s ironies and its ultimate mystery. KERUV Shalom Chaverim,

Bob Spector

Wow, the last few weeks since our holidays have flown by. I hope you have been enjoying the wonderful Fall weather we have been experiencing as we all eagerly anticipate Thanksgiving and Chanukah, and for some of our members, Christmas, all family focused holidays. These holidays are all wonderful opportunities to create lasting memories. I have fond memories of meeting my future in-laws for the first time several days before Christmas over 30 years ago. I decided to attend Christmas mass with them out of respect and appreciation for their warmth and acceptance of who I was and perhaps wasn’t (not a Catholic). I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable entering their church. I remember feeling a bit lost during the service. Most of the congregants seemed to have memorized the prayers so following in the prayer book was very challenging. As embraced as I felt by Chris’ family, I had clearly entered the Discomfort Zone of my visit. This memory has me wondering what it might be like for our members, both Jewish and not Jewish upon entering our sanctuary for services, who do not read Hebrew. How do you feel a part of a religious service if you cannot follow along? I suspect that many of my fellow congregants may similarly feel that they are experiencing their own Discomfort Zone. I believe that Beth Shalom has done an amazing job of creating a welcoming, engaging, and accepting environment for our members who are not Jewish upon entering our front doors. All social events, guest speaker series, and classes are open to all members, and their children are not only welcome but encouraged to be in our Religious School. However, I suspect our clergy sometimes struggle with the challenge of engaging our members into the religious/spiritual life that Beth Shalom offers our families. It is particularly challenging to engage someone who may be of a different faith. So, do I have the answers? Probably not, but I will share the rest of the story…. Even though I felt a bit like a fish out of water, I warmly reflect on all these moments. I truly cherish the memories of attending Christmas and Easter mass with my in-laws, and I know that my in-laws cherished their time at Beth Shalom attending their grandchildren’s B’nai Mitzvah. The openness, respect and acceptance we had for our differences served to bring us closer (Keruv) together. I believe that a religious or spiritual moment can occur anytime and anyplace. As I use our holiday services to reflect upon my life, I can do the same at St. Mary Magdelan parish in Wilmington, Delaware. With that said, I encourage all our members who do not read Hebrew to sign up for Hebrew classes at Beth Shalom. Our community is very accommodating. If a need exists, our programming committee will do anything to fill it. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need help in finding these learning resources and opportunities. Learning Hebrew and creating loving memories are but two ways to create comfort. If you experience any aspects of synagogue life to be uncomfortable, my holiday wish for all of you is for that to change. On behalf of the Keruv Interfaith Family committee. Have a wonderful holiday season. As always, I welcome your comments and feedback. I can be contacted at cbskeruv@gmail.com.

MEN’S CLUB Dan Sher

As I write this bulletin article we are so excited because we are leaving for Israel in less than two weeks! Nineteen men from Congregation Beth Shalom will be going to Israel – this is a first for our Men’s Club and hopefully not a last trip. For me, it will be my third time in Israel and almost exactly eighteen years since the last time I was in Israel – also with Congregation Beth Shalom. Now that we are in the swing of things with programming, breakfasts, etc. I hope that you will come be a part of our award-winning men’s club. I hear from people all of the time that they want to come to events and they want to be involved – now is the time.

Last month we had some great breakfasts starting with our Israel in Depth series (a joint program with Adult Education and the Israel Committee) and we did a Spirits and Spirituality program with mimosas and bloody marys. We are starting this month with an important speaker on Sunday, November 4th when we welcome Anita Pildes to speak at our breakfast. Anita is the Community Education and Outreach Coordinator for SHALVA, the Chicago area’s agency assisting Jewish women experiencing or healing from domestic abuse through counseling, supportive services and community education. Please come to this breakfast and then stay and support our Sisterhood at their Holiday Boutique taking place that same day. We are finishing up this month with our annual Erev Thanksgiving program. This year we invite families to come on Wednesday, November 21st for Family Bingo. Bring your kids, grandchildren, or children of all ages – everyone gets a prize and it is a lot of fun for everyone. You can RSVP on MyCBS or contact our VP of Programming, Bob Goldwin for more information. As we look to next month, we are starting the month with a Young Family Programming Chanukah Bash and Breakfast on Sunday, December 2nd. Join us for a pancake breakfast, music and a lot of fun for our youngest families just in time to celebrate Chanukah. As I said earlier – now is the time to start getting involved with our club. We are active and want to make sure there is something for everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

Loves Me, Loves Me Not: A Glimpse into Domestic Abuse in the Jewish Community Presented by Anita Pildes, the Community Outreach and Education Coordinator of SHALVA

Sunday, November 4, 2018 Speaker at 10:00 am following 9:30 am Breakfast Anita Pildes is SHALVA’s Community Education and Outreach Coordinator, bringing domestic abuse awareness programing to the Jewish community, medical professionals, law enforcement, professional organizations and the general public. She previously was a litigator and General Counsel of Mellon Bank/ First United Leasing Corporation. She has been a Jewish Studies educator for many years. Anita earned her Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and law degree (JD) from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law.
