ADAR/NISAN 5780 | MARCH 2020 | VOLUME 79 ISSUE 49

RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES I just finished watching a new documentary, Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles, detailing the history of Fiddler on the Roof. The film takes us from its origins in the stories of Sholom Aleichem to productions of the show in places like Japan and Thailand. As someone who loves everything there is about this show, I was incredibly moved by the documentary. Many of you know that I have a love for musical theatre and playing Tevye in my last year of high school has stayed with me and will always be a part of me. It has been a privilege to see the show several times, the first when I was young; my mom took me to see the show in Toronto staring Theodore Bikel – not a bad way to start. Everyone has their favorite Tevye, mine happens to be Topol. In 2006, I knew a member of the Broadway cast and was lucky enough to go on the stage and see the sets after a performance – and yes, I was able to do my Tevye “If I Were a Rich Man” dance. Why is it that I share all of this with you? Not only is the film moving, there is one word that permeates throughout the show. Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein did something remarkable in that they were able to take the word, “tradition,” and carry it throughout the show. Fiddler is more than a story about one man, his family, and his community. It is a story about our people. Yes, it focuses on people in Rabbi Melman

Imperial Russia at the beginning of the 1900s and yet its message is as relatable today as it is timeless. Our traditions are the backbone of who we are and who we have always been as a people. We celebrate and commemorate events that took place thousands of years ago and each year they continue to take on new significance in our lives. We remember the heroine, Esther, and celebrate her and our survival each year during Purim. We sit around our seder tables and eat matzah, just as our ancestors did during the exodus from Egypt. And we sit on the floor on Tisha B’Av and commemorate the destruction of the First and Second Temples. We carry the traditions of our collective history as a people, and we carry the traditions of our families and pass them on from one generation to the next. Yes, sometimes our traditions change. As we have done throughout history, we bend, adapt, and grow. It is not a new concept. Tevye struggles with change. We see that played out through his daughters’ life decisions. In a sense, they all break the mold, and ultimately, Tevye learns to live and embrace these decisions because he doesn’t want to lock a door that cannot be opened from the other side. Tradition doesn’t mean being frozen in time. It is so important that the varying messages of tradition be passed on to the entire community. The essence of who we are as the Jewish people can be summed up in the powerful ending line of Fiddler on the Roof, “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as, as a fiddler on the roof.”

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT A recent Torah portion, Bo, really struck a nerve with me. In this parasha, we near the end of the Ten Plagues. In the first sentence, we learn that God has hardened Pharaoh’s heart so he would not allow the Israelites to leave Egypt. The result is that Pharaoh is forced to suffer through consequences that were not entirely of his own making. God unleashed the plagues to demonstrate God’s own power and to prove that the Jews were God’s chosen people. This was an important lesson, not only to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, but also to the Israelites who needed to break free of their slave mentality by learning that there was a more powerful being than their Egyptian taskmasters. Pharaoh was considered by his people to be a god. Even if, during the early plagues, he had wanted to give in and let the people go, he would have been unable to do so without appearing weak to his people. But early on, Pharaoh was too vain and stubborn to consider this. Later, as the plagues decimated Egypt, we see Pharaoh begin to struggle with himself to perhaps do the right thing but in fact, God does not allow him to make that choice. In Bo, there were no good choices available to Pharaoh and he was forced to play the hand which he was dealt - no matter if or when he wanted to change his mind. One could go back to any number of earlier, certainly evil decisions by this Pharaoh and his predecessors - enslaving the Jews, drowning all the male babies born to the Jews, forcing them to build treasure cities - where perhaps this Pharaoh or another could have turned around and done what was right, if his pride would have let him. By the time Pharaoh realized the unintended consequences of his actions, it was too late to stop the chain of events that God had put in place. Any of us who has ever been a leader has approached the position with high hopes and the best of intentions. Although some of us may joke about being the only one who was silly enough to say yes, I believe that no one really takes on the obligations and responsibilities of leading any group without feeling passionate and proud to be there. All leaders begin with a passion to make things stronger at the end of their tenure than when they began, and the pride in knowing that people have put their trust in them to make the right decisions. But sometimes, even with the best of intentions and all the passion in the world, a leader cannot avoid the unintended consequences of their decisions. Sometimes it feels like it is impossible to stop, turn around and make any decisions that will ultimately benefit the group, or in the words of Hippocrates, “do no harm.” Hopefully, every leader has at least one advisor who has the ability to help them stop, look at a situation objectively and maybe from a different viewpoint, to help them to step back or choose differently, or try to help them after they have crossed the line. And hopefully, a true leader will have the wisdom to listen and heed good advice when it is given. Many times balancing the overall needs of the synagogue with the specific needs of our individual stakeholders is difficult. However, that is why we have not only a president to lead us, but also a Board, Executive Committee, past presidents, professional staff, and clergy, who all help us choose wisely, balance difficult choices and avoid possible pitfalls. The Pharaoh had no choices left to him in Bo and acted accordingly. My goal has always been to be a Joseph rather than a Pharaoh; someone who chooses appropriate advisors, listens to advice and makes the best of the situation which is before me, creatively and strategically thinking ahead, choosing the path that will lift up the entire congregation. Shalom, Tanya Solomon

CANTOR’S NOTES “NO SOUP FOR YOU!” If you remember that iconic line from the Seinfeld show it likely elicited a grin. Soup is “Mmm, Mmm! Good” and not being able to have it when you want or need it is disappointing. It is always healing to have a nice bowl of chicken soup especially when you’re not feeling well. This elixir never tastes as good as when your mom made it for you on a cold winter day when you would stay home from school. I recall a joke about a “balabuste”, the best homemaker/cook in the world. A young woman was feeling sick. She called her mother and told her so and the mother went to make her some soup. First she had to go to the store, which took her two buses, to buy all fresh ingredients. She picked the vegetables, bought a chicken, spices and matzo ball mix. She came home, donned her apron and put her hair up in a bun. She first cleaned the chicken being sure to get all of the feathers off, even using a match to burn off the finest of the feathers. She then cut it into pieces, small delicate pieces to chew but large enough not to choke on them. She then cut the vegetables with great precision and care. She turned on the stove top and began to boil the water and added each ingredient with purpose. She stirred and watched the pot of soup until it was perfectly ready. She took it off of the stove and placed in on her sink counter. From under the counter she took two mason jars. She carefully poured the soup into the first and then into the second being sure not to waste a drop. When she was done she took a piece of wax paper and covered the top of each jar securing each with a rubber band. She then took the lid and screwed it on tightly. She then found some aluminum paper and wrapped it around the jars and then brown paper which she secured with another rubber band, twisted twice for security. She placed the jars in a box and filled the rest with newspapers and bubble wrap. She took it to Fed Ex and shipped it to her daughter across the country. Two days later it arrived and the girl anxiously opened the box, unwrapped it all and placed her two jars on the table. She took one and worked hard to untwist the jar lid and placed the open jar near her soup bowl. She poured it in meticulously and sat down with the soup, spoon the ready in her hand. She dipped it into the bowl of chicken soup, brought it too her lips, only to find out that it was still too hot to eat. Now that’s a balabuste! Here at Congregation Beth Shalom we are beginning a wonderful new mitzvah endeavor for our members, “Soup for You!” Chicken Soup (and vegetarian soup) for those who are somewhat under the weather. (Giving credit to Rabbi Averbach who pitched this idea over two years ago). Have a cold? Call. Have a friend in need who could use a bowl of care? Call. Recuperating and need some vitamin A, C, K and more? Call. A band of kitchen wizards, under the rubric of our Social Action Committee Vice President, Sara Weinstein, are starting this new outreach effort. Interested? Give a call, or send an email, to volunteer, cook or deliver soup jars for us. For now contact me and I will channel you to the right folks - cantorstoehr@bethshalomnb.org. The secret recipe was chosen, from a taste test of four different recipes, by the testing committee. Want to come and taste test with us? “Sorry, No Soup for You”, we’ve done it. Stay healthy, Stay well, and Stay CBS Proud. Cantor Stoehr

PURIM The Megillah (scroll) of Esther sets forth the classic struggle between good and evil. It is also a paradigmatic story of Jewish persecution. Against all odds, a Jewish girl named Esther (her Hebrew name was Hadassah) became queen of the vast Persian Empire. King Achashverosh’s right-hand man Haman, angry with Esther’s cousin Mordecai for not bowing down, tells the king that the Jews pose a political threat to the empire. Haman decides to have all the Jews killed and casts a lottery (pur) to determine the date for the massacre. Queen Esther intervenes and saves her people from destruction. To remember this triumph, Jews were instructed to observe the fourteenth of the month of Adar “as the day on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into festival, that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending delicacies to one another, and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22). We celebrate in the synagogue with the public reading of Megilat Esther, making loud sounds with groggers whenever the name of Haman is read. Children's masquerades and Purim carnivals add to the joyous spirit. Purim is considered a minor holiday, but it is a time of great joy for the Jewish people.

SISTERHOOD Robyn Rosengard

Spring is coming??? Spring is coming…Spring IS Coming!!!! The punctuation should say it all…. but yes, Spring is coming. On February 2nd, that furry little groundhog did not see his shadow and now we are sure that Spring is only a few weeks away. So, what does that mean when you are President of CBS Sisterhood? Well, I can tell you what it means, we kick it into high gear. In my house we refer to March as the “corner”. Well, as we turn the corner on another Winter of great programs, we head into Spring renewed and reinvigorated to finish strong.

We had a wonderful Sisterhood Shabbat program and I was so glad to see so many of you there. Sisterhood Shabbat is a time when we honor the members of our organization that work so hard throughout the year. I would like to thank Denise Eisenberg and Susan Rosenthal for helping to produce a beautiful and meaningful service and delicious dinner. Our Nominating Committee has convened and we have a great and innovative 2021-2022 Board. We are always looking for women to help us in organizing and assisting on all our programs and events. I mentioned Spring at the top of this article…well that means only one thing!!!! Pesach Kiddushim Baking is HERE!!!! I would like to thank Hilary Braun for leading the effort and do a little recruiting for her as well. Calling all who are willing and able to help us prepare for the Pesach Kiddushim. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand. It’s a great way to get involved especially if you have never been to a Sisterhood event or program. There’s nothing like connecting with your friends and meeting new ones in the kitchen. We will be preparing the food for these special Kiddushim from March 24th through 26th. Sign up information is posted on the Sisterhood Calendar on the CBS website. I look forward to seeing you around the building. Robyn

MEN’S CLUB Sreven Elisco

MEN’S CLUB ANNOUNCES ITS MAN AND YOUTH OF THE YEAR As a Men’s Club, we have been fortunate over the years to have men who join Congregation Beth Shalom and not only immediately join the Men’s Club, but also seek out leadership positions. Such is the case with this year’s honoree. I am pleased to announce that the Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club Man of the Year is Donald Pike.

Donald, his wife Miriam and their daughters Rebecca and Rachel, have been members of Congregation Beth Shalom since November of 2012. Donald joined the Men’s Club Board during 2013-2014. He then moved up to the Men’s Club Executive Committee in 2014-2015, serving as the Ritual Program Vice President. That year was significant. The Men’s Club decided after 48 years to move Men’s Club Shabbat from Friday night to Saturday morning. Donald had quite a task ahead of him redesigning the program. Under his leadership we had an unprecedented level of participation, including reading all the Torah portions and the Haftorah, which continues today. From 2015-2017, Donald served as Treasurer. He then went on to serve as Ways and Means Vice President during the 2017-2019 years. He is currently serving as House Special Events Vice President. In coordination with our USY Youth Group, we also honor two outstanding young members of our congregation with the Youth of the Year Award. This year the Men’s Club is honoring both Becky Jacobson and Anat Pissetzky. The JFMC Midwest Region event where these honorees will be recognized, will be held on Sunday, March 15th at Beth Hillel Bnai Emunah, 3220 Big Tree Lane, Wilmette. The event begins at 4:30 PM followed by dinner at 5:30 PM. The event costs $36 per person until March 4th, at which time the price goes up to $45 per person. You can attend the event by registering now at https://midwestregionfjmc.myshopify.com. As part of our “To Your Good Health” Breakfast Series, please join us for breakfast on Sunday, March 15th, 2020 followed by the presentation, Jewish Genetics - It’s Not Just Tay-Sachs Anymore. This program will be led by our own Dr. Lee Shulman and Dr. Andrew Wagner. Their presentation will help to familiarize you with the types of cancers that Jews are more prone to developing, review basic concepts in genetics and carrier screening. Please reserve Shabbat morning, April 11, 2020 for a very special Pesach Men’s Club Shabbat, where we will also honor our 2020 Kavod Award recipient. L’Shalom, Steven

Adele Zaveduk, our CBS Library Chairperson, passed away on January 23, 2020. Thirteen years ago, Adele, together with Karen Wadler, the librarian at the time, hired me to work part-time in the library. Adele was such a strong and inspiring woman. Early on, she shared her story as a hidden child in France during the Holocaust. She also discussed how meaningful it was to visit schools and share her story with students. Every time she came to the library to help out, she had so much energy. We knew that when she was here things were going to get done. Even though I was still in my teens, she respected my opinion as part of the library staff. She was not just a colleague, she was a friend who always genuinely cared about me and others around her. I will miss her and the next CBS Book Nook is being dedicated to this wonderful woman.

Tracy Safron Suggests Gateway to the Moon is a remarkable novel by Mary Morris. The story begins with two characters separated by 500 years. It is 1492 Spain and the Spanish Inquisition rages on. Most Jews convert to Christianity, but as crypto-Jews they put their lives in peril by continuing the practices of Judaism in secret. Columbus is setting sail for the New World and he hires Luis de Torres as his interpreter. Luis, a crypto-Jew, accompanies Columbus and prays that his departure will protect his beloved wife and two young sons. In 1992 Miguel Torres is a gifted fifteen-year-old living in run down Entrada, New Mexico. Everyone in Entrada is probably related, and most people can’t wait to leave. Astronomy is the focus of Miguel’s life and he gazes at the stars with wonder through his homemade telescope. He ponders many things including why does his mother, like most people in Entrada, light candles and say prayers on Friday nights? Turmoil is added to Miguel’s world when he meets Rachel Rothstein, a recent transplant from New York and is hired as a babysitter for her sons. Miguel is confused when he notices similarities in their cultures. Morris’ thrilling plot follows de Torres’ descendants as they travel from Spain and Portugal to Mexico and finally New Mexico. The character’s stories of struggle and endurance are what make Gateway to the Moon a thrilling masterpiece. Reading Morris’ captivating novel is like opening the door to a fantastic discovery. CBS Yahrzeit Notifications and Name Reading To help honor the memory of your loved ones, you will receive Yahrzeit notifications via email during the month prior to the remembrance date. Your loved one’s name will be read at evening services the day before in addition to morning and evening services on the day of the Yahrzeit. It is appropriate to light a Yahrzeit candle the evening before the remembrance date. In addition, Yahrzeits for the upcoming week will be printed in the Shabbat brochure. We no longer read all of the names for the week’s Yahrzeits during Shabbat services and have not done so for over three years. If you do not receive your notification or prefer paper mail, please contact Eli Castellano at ecastellano@bethshalomnb.org or 847-498-4100 x.29. 22
