RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES Rabbi Melman

I look back over the last year and wonder at times how we made it. The truth is, I don’t spend all that much time dwelling on what wasn’t and instead, focus my energies on what was! Those times when I do wonder how we made it to this point quickly fade when I realize what we have been able to accomplish as a community, as a family.

The classes taught, the programming offered, the online and in-person gatherings, and the beginning of the return to greater normalcy with people in the Kamensky Sanctuary. Anyone that was in shul on Shabbat HaGadol and over Pesach will tell you how great it felt to be back – to be home. For me, it was incredibly emotional and moving, for at our core as a synagogue, we are a house of worship. Yes, people come for all sorts of reasons and I love that, but we must keep in mind that being together at sacred times in sacred spaces is at the heart of what we do and who we are. What is truly amazing is that even though we weren’t in person, and many still are not, we connected with each other through our online platforms via Live Stream, Zoom during the weekdays, and Facebook Live for our Havdalah at Home. We know connecting online is not quite the same – thank God we have had the technology to stay connected and see each other. Please know that we understand that not everyone is comfortable coming back in person at this point. We hope that anxiety will ease as we continue to move forward and ultimately beyond the pandemic. We will continue to abide by the State of Illinois protocols, the Illinois Department of Public Health, the CDC, and our COVID-19 Medical Task Force. I must take this time to thank the members of the Task Force – Dr. David Hakimian, Dr. Ari Jaffe, Dr. Alan Shapiro, and Dr. Lee Shulman, all who are also members of Congregation Beth Shalom. Their help and guidance has been invaluable. Ultimately, we want to have more people back in person – as many as our limitations on numbers will allow. We want more Jews in the pews! We want everyone to have that feeling of “being home”, as many have already felt. Summer will bring more opportunities for in-person outdoor events and services and we want to encourage everyone to attend as their comfort level allows. As we look ahead, we have already begun to plan for the High Holidays. Once again, things will be different. The most important detail is that we will be able to be back in-person in some way. While things may still change, we are planning on having services at both the main sanctuary at CBS as well as Wood Oaks. We hope to have two shifts for many of the services to allow for continued safety precautions while at the same time being able to accommodate all those who wish to attend in-person to be able to do so. We will maintain our online live streaming presence with updated cameras and a new sound system. This will offer those at home an even better viewing quality and will also allow us to run multiple services online at the same time. We promise more details shortly. Whether online or in-person, we will continue to connect and reconnect and maintain the excellence that we have all come to expect from Congregation Beth Shalom. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer and hope that you will be back at CBS in-person soon.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT I would like to congratulate those who are joining or Serving as president of taking a new position on the Executive Board: Congregation Beth Shalom has been a true honor. I think back to x Dr. Bob Spector when I first joined Beth Shalom. x Susan Lampert My husband David and I were x Randy Samborn “synagogue shopping”, trying to x Bill Shulman find somewhere that felt comfortax Robyn Rosengard ble for both of us. We attended x Suzy Hakimian services at CBS and were greeted x Seth Schrank warmly by congregants and clergy x Linda Foster alike. That is when we knew that this would be our home- it is so x Howard Freidin true when we say that we are a large congregation with a small x Jackie Zelkowitz feel. x Dr. Andy Wagner When we sat in Harvey Gold’s office and signed in as x Steve Lessman new members, he asked us what our vision of the future would I would like to thank those who are leaving the Board be. I responded that I was hoping to become just a bit involved for all your years of service: once our kids were older. At that time, Matt was 2 and a half and Mollie was a newborn. Harvey predicted that eventually I would x Dan Sher become president. David and I both laughed, left the office, and x Beth Sher went home, not expecting anything to come of that prediction. x Myra Holman Little did we know. x Dr. Rachel Laven This past year and a half has not been what any of us x Jill Olefsky x Norm Padnos expected when I became president. The challenges we faced to x Fern Roseman maintain our essential nature as a close and caring congregation x Steve Warshawsky during this time have been immense. But I am proud to say that x Dr. Steven Zaacks we all pitched in together to make it work and to prepare for the x Harry Zoberman resumption of normality soon. I cannot thank my family enough And I would like to thank those who are continuing their for their patience, understanding and cooperation over the past two years. I am continually amazed at the efforts of all the clergy, service on either the Board or Executive Board: staff, and lay leaders I have been fortunate enough to work with x Howard Sigal during my term. I will have more to say about our clergy and staff x Raymond Rokni in July, but for now I am focusing on our lay leaders. x Marjorie Maxwell I would like to congratulate those who are joining (new x Cheryl Braude x Judy Balter and returning members) the Board of Trustees and I look x Rick Dissen forward to working with you: x Ari Footlik x Harold Dembo x Diana Lewis x Jim Donenberg x Karyn Liss x Steven Elisco x Bret Maxwell x Hillary Elkins x Wes Nissen x Annie Goldman x Neil Rosengard x Ellen Grossman x Jill Roter x Joanna Kaplan x Brad Shaps x Andy Lebovitz x Laura Shulman x Roz Mokhtarian x Jay Silver x Leslie Rogoff x Sara Weinstein x Amy Offenbach Being a lay leader here at CBS is a challenge. It requires x Edna Schrank commitment, patience, and time. While this work is not always x Dr. Alan Shapiro easy, it is always extremely rewarding. The time and effort each x Dan Sher of you devotes for the good of our CBS family is worth every x Charlotte Stern effort and every minute. SISTERHOOD Robyn Rosengard

My time as Sisterhood President has been challenging and at the same time extremely gratifying. Who knew we would be forced to do and learn all the new things that, by now, we have all become accustomed to? As I have mentioned in past articles, this job cannot be done by one woman alone. Just like everything else, it takes a village. I hope to give thanks to all the members of our Sisterhood village in this bulletin article that is exceedingly difficult for me to write.

It takes a village, and the Sisterhood village would not be complete without the very energetic and conscientious members of our Executive Committee and Board Members. You all have dedicated so much time and effort to producing meaningful and enlightening events and programs throughout the past two years and especially pivoting when the pandemic reared its ugly head. To all the past Sisterhood Presidents thank you for your guidance, patience, and friendship. I want to thank Jackie Zelkowitz for being my right and even sometimes my left hand, too. I hope that you have learned from our successes and our infrequent misses and I wish you all the best for your time as Sisterhood President. I will be there to help in any way that I can. Through this crazy time, we have produced many new programs and increased our membership as well as our engagement year after year. The participation through online activity has been nothing short of amazing. We did it as a team and I am immensely proud. I want to thank our Clergy for guiding me spiritually and emotionally through the past two years as Sisterhood President. Rabbi Melman, Rabbi Ferratier, and Cantor Stoehr have all played a significant role in one way or another and I cannot thank them enough. To the CBS administrative staff, professionals, and our Executive Director, Susan Karlinsky, thank you all, for your hard work and dedication to all things CBS. I am sure that without each of you, we would all be somewhat lost when it comes to planning and carrying out our programs and endeavors. And to the fabulously hard working maintenance team, you all do such a great job keeping our home, just that, our home. I have been so fortunate to work alongside an extraordinarily talented and hardworking CBS Executive Board and I have learned so much from all of them these past two years. A special thanks to Tanya Solomon, who has guided us as a community so eloquently and has been a great sounding board for me personally. Finally, to my family, thank you for putting up with all my craziness and late night conversations surrounding Sisterhood business. Thanks to Neil for all his fabulous help and creative writing, do you think I could write all these fantastic bulletin articles on my own? No way! I have learned so much and will cherish my time as Sisterhood President. My experience has greatly enhanced my love for CBS. It has been my honor to serve as Sisterhood President through some of the toughest years our community has ever seen. We have emerged Bigger, Stronger and Better than ever before, able to leap tall buildings and so on and so forth. I hope to see you in our building sooner, rather than later. With Love, Robyn Rosengard

MEN’S CLUB Steven Elisco

As I begin my two-year term as your Men's Club President… Hey, wait a minute, that’s not right. It should be, “As I conclude my two-year term as your Men’s Club President”. Can you believe it has been two years? I can’t. Having spent two thirds of that time under COVID-19 has not helped my time perception. Sometimes the days seemed to drag on. But then I would have a moment of clarity and realized multiple weeks just passed by. Was I really Men’s Club President or just some mystical ZOOM Master?

All kidding aside, serving as your Men’s Club President has been an honor and an extremely rewarding experience. As I told the Club when I first started, being the Men’s Club President was not a long-term goal of mine. However, as I began my twelve-year journey up through the ranks of Men’s Club leadership, I began to realize that accepting the Club Presidency was the natural progression of the commitment I made to Congregation Beth Shalom as the first CBS USY President from 1972-1974. On June 30, 2021, I will officially become a “Past President” and join the ranks of all those wonderful men who proceeded me. We are so lucky to have so many Past Presidents that remain active and are important to the Club’s success. While my responsibilities will shift, the commitment to the Club will remain steady and true. Speaking of Past Presidents, Steve Lessman will be reprising his role as President from 1995-1997, as one of our Co-Presidents for the 2021-2023 term. He has an aggressive plan for building Club Leadership in both the short and long terms. Andy Wagner as Co-President, brings a youthful enthusiasm to the position with great creativity in both the Social and Ritual aspects of the Club. Together, both Steve and Andy will be a great team to move our Club forward. We learned a lot about ourselves this past year. As a Club we have patience, we have the flexibility to quickly make a change for better results, many of our programs designed to work around COVID-19 can be adapted for successful programs post COVID-19 and most importantly, we are far more productive when we focus on what we CAN DO and not what we cannot do. KERUV KORNER Dr. Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim,

With summer upon us, I hope you are able to safely have more quality time with your family and friends. As many of you know I was asked and have accepted the opportunity and immense privilege to be our next CBS President beginning July 1, 2021. I am both anxiously and enthusiastically looking forward to supporting a remarkably talented and profoundly dedicated group of staff members and lay leaders. As I become more aware of the time I need to commit to this new role in our community, I realize that I may have to pull back a bit on some of my current activities that are very dear to me. One of those, sadly (at least for me) is the frequency of writing my Keruv column. As this may be my last column for a while, I have been reflecting on how our Keruv Initiative has impacted our community since my first column in September, 2010. About three years ago, I attended a conference sponsored by USCJ called ‘Expanding our Embrace: Creating Space for Interfaith Families in our Kehillot.’ This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together representatives from many synagogues throughout the Midwest to discuss how to create a more welcoming environment for interfaith married couples. As you may recall, our Keruv Initiative evolved through the leadership of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. However, over the years USCJ has recognized the need to provide support and outreach to Conservative synagogues to address this particularly important challenge. As I listened to the stories the participants shared (some were quite painful) I once again became so appreciative of the response Congregation Beth Shalom has made for over a decade in welcoming so many diverse Jewish families to our synagogue family. Over the years, I have come to realize that being welcoming and being inclusive are not necessarily one and the same. A family/community cannot be inclusive without being welcoming but being welcoming does not necessarily guarantee creating an atmosphere of inclusion. Over the last decade our Keruv/Interfaith Marriage Initiative has worked with the Board of Trustees to address language in our by-laws (including gender neutrality) that was not consistent with our aspiration to be an inclusive community. I have been asked over the years why I thought it was important to change a document that well over 90% of our members never looked at or even knew existed. While we had become welcoming of our interfaith families for many years, there were by-laws that included statements of exclusion that I am proud to say that our Board of Trustees removed. Gender specific language has also been changed to gender neutral language to be inclusionary of our same sex couples. Our by-laws are not only rules of order for us to follow, but the words we use to articulate these rules are also a statement of our and our leaders’ inclusionary values as a community. What I have learned over the years is that not all synagogues have even begun to address exclusionary language in their by-laws with their Board leadership. Until they do, these synagogues may be very welcoming, but they are not inclusive. I have also learned that within the Conservative Movement only 19% of these synagogues include interfaith family welcoming statements on their websites, only 20% have an outreach committee, and only 12% have offered an interfaith family program. I want to give a BIG SHOUT-OUT to our lay and professional leadership to have both the wisdom and courage to be a national leader in becoming a community of inclusion. I suspect that 50 years ago our Congregation Beth Shalom leadership, like our country, was not thinking about phrases such as diversity, inclusion, equity, and interfaith family welcoming. CBS’s growth and richness is directly related to its commitment to evolve as a community. Have we completed this evolution? Not possible, but I truly believe that we will continue to maintain this commitment to our many wonderful initiatives that represent our value to be inclusive. I will continue to have a column in the bulletin every month and I pledge to comment on the many things we do so well, as well as on our aspirations to grow (literally and metaphorically) and evolve as a community to meet the needs of our diverse Jewish community. As always, I can be reached at cbskeruv@gmail.com. B’Shalom, Bob

SOCIAL ACTION Social Action Update Like so many aspects of our lives, the pandemic has impacted our ability to serve both Congregation Beth Shalom and extended communities. However, through the dedication of so many countless CBS volunteers we have continued to serve those in need. I am so proud of everyone who has given their time and donations to help those in need. I am not able to name all the volunteers who have really stepped up this past year, but I want you to know how much I and our CBS community appreciate your efforts to help others. With that said, I do want to mention a few individuals who have taken on leadership roles on the Social Action committee and I apologize if I have omitted any individual recognitions. Thank you Fern Roseman for your work with the Northfield Township Food Pantry and the Mitzvot Committee, Leatte Gelfeld for your work with Hunger Free Northbrook, Steve Krasner, Chris Meyers, and Tami Rokni for taking the lead in supporting our refugee family, Sara Weinstein for your work with PADS, Merrill Medansky for your work with The ARK, Steven Elisco, Men’s Club President, for coordinating our blood drives which have resulted in more than 300 donations this past year and Robyn Rosengard, Sisterhood President, for the many mitzvah projects provided by Sisterhhood. I also want to thank Sara Weinstein for her support, guidance, and patience during our leadership transition last summer, Jill Olefsky for her passion and ongoing advice, Deanne Friedman whose communications support has been invaluable, and Tanya Solomon for her positivity and always knowing the right time to offer encouragement when needed. Finally, a special thank you to Susan Karlinsky for making the time to offer her passion and support of Social Action while simultaneously running Congregation Beth Shalom. It has truly been a privilege for me to work with such outstanding individuals over the past year. One of things I learned this year is that we do so much for others which extend well beyond the projects of our Social Action committee. We should all be proud of the way we support both our congregation family and extended community. As I transition to a new role on the Board of Trustees, I know that Suzy Hakimian, our in-coming Social Action Vice-President, will provide outstanding leadership and support of the many projects currently in place (and most likely some new ones). Here is a summary of our ongoing projects: We are collecting brown paper bags (new or undamaged) for the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Jill Olefsky is coordinating this program. She is willing to come to your home or they can be dropped off at CBS. Jill can be contacted through email, Jolefsky@aol.com, or phone, 847-272-1758. If you are willing to include 1-3 UNEXPIRED items for the Northfield Township Food Pantry, she will make sure these items are delivered. That way we will help both food pantries (Northfield does not want bags). PADS continues to provide housing for the homeless. CBS members have been generously supporting them by providing donations of needed items and monies to help offset the costs. We have also been informed that PADS is now accepting volunteers to work with the homeless in these shelters. For more info contact Sara Weinstein at slo155@aol.com. The Northfield Township Food Pantry has seen its client base more than double in six months. The Pantry needs our help. Please drop off UNEXPIRED food items on the cart located at the front door of Congregation Beth Shalom. Check (made out to the NTFP) and gift card donations can be mailed to Fern Roseman, 2415 Auburn Lane, Northbrook, IL, 60062 who will deliver them to the Northfield Township Food Pantry. You can also contact Fern at 847-564-9266. This is our community. Help us improve the lives of those in need. Now that many adults have started receiving their COVID vaccines, and are feeling more comfortable about resuming normal activities, it is a great time to volunteer for our ARK shopping program. Volunteers shop for groceries and deliver them to an ARK client in our suburban area. Purchases are reimbursed from the Gold Family Sabbath Fund. It is a great family project. We try to have enough volunteers so that each will shop 3-4 times a year. For more information, contact Merrill Medansky at merrill.medansky@gmail.com.

CBS HIGHLIGHTS CBS Memorial Plaques If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in one of our sacred memorial spaces at Congregation Beth Shalom. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year when Yizkor is recited. We are pleased to announce a new sacred space at Congregation Beth Shalom to honor our loved ones with memorial plaques. The west wall of the Marian Renee Saltzberg Learning Resource Center will be the new home for memorial plaques in perpetuity at CBS. You can view the list of the plaques being moved if you log into your MyCBS

account. If you are aware of any connection to any current CBS member, please notify Maria so we can update our records. Contact Maria Catezone by phone at 847-498-4100 x26 or email MCatezone@BethShalomNB.org for information or to order a plaque.
