RABBI AVERBACHS REVELATIONS “Aicha!” is the exclamation that starts Tisha B’Av’s reading, Book of Lamentations recounts Judah’s last bleeding. Concerns itself with when Jerusalem fell During the time of mighty Bavel. Everyone was banished, out they poured For the sins committed against the Lord. Gone were the days of the Temple so holy Heathens had influenced them surely but slowly. In came Nebuchadnezzar, army and all Jeremiah would weep and scream and bawl: “King Zedekiah, you were our last hope Leading us away from this downward slope. Manasseh was wicked, worshipping idol Now our great enemy has become genocidal. Our fate is locked, and out we scoot Passed the known territory, into galut.” Quiet now, our city on the hill Reticent to speak that voice small and still. Silence for our history in each of its components Tisha B’Av honors those moments. Usually we eat, but that day we fast Venerating the horrific times of our past. Wailing and mourning and sitting on the floor Xeric land we are still longing for. Year after year, we read Jeremiah’s lament Zion awaiting our imminent ascent.

As is probably obvious by the above, the book Aicha (Lamentations), which we read on Tisha B’Av (July 22), is a series of acrostic poems. Thought to be written by Jeremiah as the Babylonians burned Jerusalem and took all the Jews into exile in 586 BCE, it is a great work of theodicy. Jeremiah looks into the deep “HOW?” of the moment. How could God desert the Jews, the chosen people? If God is good and just, how can we justify the destruction of God’s home, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem? Jeremiah then gives reasons: we deserted God; we worshipped idols; we turned our backs on our history and Torah; Jerusalem is crying out for us, God has been searching for us; we failed to hear the call and this is our punishment, the Babylonians are just tools for God to carry out the plan. On Tisha B’Av, we mourn Jerusalem’s fall by the Babylonians, as well as the second destruction by the Romans in 70 CE, which also happened on the ninth day of the month of Av. This day has been noted as one of the saddest throughout the years – the destruction of the city of Betar and killings of 100,000 Jews in 132 CE, the first Crusade declared by Pope Urban II in 1095, the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition in 1492, the first day of World War I in 1914, the mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka in 1942. This month, as we read this lament, we remember the atrocities of our history, and the fact that despite all of them, we are still here. Just as we would never celebrate alone, we as a community never mourn alone. On the evening of July 21

and the morning of July 22, we read Aicha and wrestle with all the ancient, painful questions.

CULMINATING CELEBRATION/HINEYNU

As we approach the formal end of the Hineynu Campaign we want to thank the congregation for the opportunity to serve as the co-chairs and to lead such an important initiative. Over the past 18 months, we had the privilege of working with a fantastic committee that was instrumental in the success of the campaign. We have been and continue to be inspired by the dedication and service of the entire committee. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each and every one of you. The campaign provided us with the unique privilege to meet with quite a few of our members. We are so appreciative that so many of you shared your personal experiences with Beth Shalom. Learning what CBS means to our membership validated our efforts to ensure that our synagogue continues to thrive now and in the future. These stories reinforced the many wonderful things about our synagogue and why we are so lucky to have CBS as our home. During our visits, we also received some helpful feedback about how we can continue to improve our synagogue. That feedback is invaluable since our leadership is dedicated to evolving our synagogue experience so that it continually addresses the ever-changing needs of our community. Thanks to all of you who contributed to the campaign. As of the time of writing this article, we have raised more than $3 million. A special thank you to our anonymous donor who will match up to $2.5 million as payments are received, bringing the campaign total to more than $5.5 million. As a result, CBS is in a much more secure financial position and will be able to conJUNE/JULY 2018 • VOLUME 62 ISSUE 32

tinue to serve our members and community for years to come. We would also like to thank the clergy of Congregation Beth Shalom. They worked tirelessly to help us achieve this very important goal. Their collaboration, insight, and outreach were vital throughout the entire campaign. While the campaign formally ends on June 30th, it never really ends. Ultimately, we would like to grow the endowment to more than $9 million. For those who have not yet contributed to the campaign, we encourage you to do so. We will be happy to meet and discuss the ongoing needs and why every dollar will help secure the future of the congregation. In addition, over the coming months and years we will actively work on the legacy portion of our campaign, encouraging our members to include CBS as part of their wills and estate plans. Please contact the CBS office if you would like to meet or receive more information about how to make a planned gift to CBS. Thanks again to the entire congregation for this meaningful opportunity. From strength to strength, Lily and Brad

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT You may have already seen the CBS annual report or, if not, you will be receiving one in the mail soon. This beautiful new document came about for several reasons, the first being that Michael Garlin has had experience using one and had mentioned wanting to create one for Beth Shalom. In meeting with other synagogues, I also learned about the idea of creating a sheet about what we are able to do with your dues. We decided to put it together in a beautifully displayed, numbers focused report. We wanted something to not only catch your eye, but illustrate the impact we make in our own CBS community, as well as the community at large. When we began putting this together, I started emailing various VP's and staff requesting information. Even I was completely overwhelmed by the information I received! At CBS we pride ourselves on running on a tight budget and cutting excess wherever we can. Yet at the same time we are a thriving congregation. That is evident in this report just by looking at the number of people that utilize our library to the number of Torah readers we had in one year. There are so many different people that are touched by our congregation in a variety of ways. I was amazed by all the numbers and what we accomplish in one year is truly remarkable, and something that we should all celebrate. We are the model of efficiency given how much Debbie Solomon

we do with a fairly small staff for such a large congregation. I truly thank all of our clergy, professional and administrative staff for their dedication to CBS in every aspect. I also thank all of you. Without our congregants, we wouldn't be here. Additionally, many of you volunteer in some capacity at the synagogue. Whether it's one time for a project, or serving on the board or a committee, each and every one of you is valued and needed, and frankly, we could use even more of you! So I challenge all of our wonderful volunteers to bring a friend to your next event, or if you don't volunteer, please reach out to me, or to any of our staff, and we will help get you involved. Everyone has something to offer and we welcome your help and support. I’m proud to not only be a lifelong member of the synagogue, but to be your president. The job has a learning curve, and while of course there are times of frustration, there are many more times of happiness. I am proud to lead this congregation. The annual report serves to share with you all the good that we do here at CBS. I hope that you look at it and see how what we do here at CBS matters, and continue to support us in any way that you are able. Looking forward to the next 50 years and beyond at CBS. Debbie Solomon

Note from Caron and Jack Knopoff… We have been honored to chair the 50th Anniversary Committee of Congregation Beth Shalom and hope that you have celebrated with us over the past year. Now you have one last opportunity to be our guests and join in the celebration. On Sunday, June 10th at 5pm we will honor CBS’s past, present and future. During the course of the evening we will acknowledge the clergy, past and present; CBS professional, administrative, and maintenance staff; founding and early members; presidents of all arms of CBS, past and present; synagogue, Sisterhood, Men’s Club and USY board members, past and present; Hineynu donors, and committee members; 50th anniversary committee members; and our children – who are our future. We urge you to make your reservations for your entire family so you can be a part of the celebration. Activities will be provided for children 4-13 in the Youth Lounge. Don’t miss out on this very special evening. RSVP to cbs50@bethshalomnb.org or call 847-498-4100 TODAY! We want to thank all members who joined in celebrating over the past year. Special thanks to the chair people and their committees who helped plan and implement our jubilee year. A Yasher Koach to our clergy, professional, administrative and maintenance staff for their support. We look forward to the future and many more celebrations at CBS.

Q&A WITH CBS STAFF

LIBRARY

Q&A WITH BETH SHALOM STAFF MEMBER MATT RISSIEN, DIRECTOR OF YOUTH ACTIVITIES Q: What year did you start working at CBS and what is your position here? A: I started working at CBS July of 2012 as the Director of Youth Activities, taking over for Sarah Geboff who had been here for one year before me. Q: What do you like most about working at CBS? A: I like that CBS really invests and takes an interest in the youth. CBS gives our youth groups the resources to be successful and do fun programming that kids want to be a part of. Q: What’s one thing that you want people to know about you? A: One thing I’d like people to know about me is that I never forget my roots. Though I’ve been in Chicago for almost 7 years, Kansas is still a huge part of me. When the Royals went to the World Series, I drove back and forth from Illinois to Kansas City three times in three weeks!

Sisterhood/Young Family Programming Women’s Health Program

Q: What’s your favorite memory from working at CBS? A: My favorite memory from CBS would have to be my first event, a Cubs game field trip. The bus never showed up to pick us up, and I called Harvey Gold z’’l and Leann Blue freaking out about what to do. They called an airport transportation company and we all took nice limos back to the synagogue. Q: What would you do if you won the lottery? A: If I won the lottery, I’d have a giant ball pit that covered my entire backyard. I’d also probably see Hamilton a few more times and donate some to the new CBS Youth Endowment Fund. Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? A: Chanukah! What’s better than presents, candles and latkes?!? Plus, people like to watch my “Dreidel Song: Hannukah Rap” on YouTube, so that’s always exciting!

Installation of 2018-19 CBS Sisterhood Executive Committee

Q: What is the best part of your job? A: The best part of my job is getting to work with all the teens. In six years, I’ve gotten to see lots of CBS youth grow up. Many have graduated college and stayed in touch. It’s always cool to hear everyone’s stories of how they were impacted by the synagogue and our youth groups. Q: If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? A: Gal Gadot, because she’s Israeli and a superhero! Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? A: If I could have one superpower, it would be the power to cheer people up. I like to think I’m a pretty fun guy, but sometimes it’s tough to not come off as slightly annoying when people aren’t in the best of moods! Q: What has been your biggest success at CBS? A: My biggest success at CBS I would say was CBS USY getting the CHUSY Chapter of the Year award this past April. It was the culmination of everyone putting in so much effort and really just a tremendous year. It also was the final result of the hard work of all the past USY boards and presidents. Hard work finally paid off! Q: What has been the biggest change at Beth Shalom since you began? A: When I started at Beth Shalom, I was single and 25. One week after beginning at CBS, I met Brittany (now my wife) on Jdate. As I’ve grown at CBS, so has our relationship. It’s been really nice how welcome she always feels at CBS, and going from dating to engaged to married, all while being at CBS has been so nice to share with the congregation. 8

YOUTH/YOUNG FAMILY PROGRAMING Matt Rissien

I cannot believe the year is actually over! Of all my years at CBS, it feels like this one has been the most exciting and busy. It seems like yesterday we were starting the year off with Yom Beth Shalom. Since then, we’ve had animal shows, Chanukah bashes, Shabbat dinners, Ta’am Yisrael, Sukkah decorating and so much more! I always find it amazing to look back at the calendar and see just how much we’ve accomplished throughout the year.

When talking about our successes, our USY chapter really deserves its own article. This year we averaged 40-50 teens at every program. We started many new programs including #ShabbaTeen, a discussion four times a year with the teens and Rabbi Averbach. We started our own Youth Endowment Fund and brought in Jeff Garlin for a fundraiser. We had discussions with Rabbi Ruti Regan, and saw stand-up comedy with an Israeli comedian. We donated more than $2,000 to the USY Tikkun Olam Fund, while still raising money for our new endowment fund. Most importantly, we were given the honor of CHUSY Region’s Chapter of the Year. All of these accomplishments come from the hard work of our 2017-18 board. They all deserve so much credit for the efforts they put in this year. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who came last month for our Parkland Shabbat. Hearing the stories of Sari Kaufman and Bela Urbina were both meaningful and inspiring, but also stories that shouldn’t have to be told. The congregation and community rallied around the teens and showed them so much support, and I am still getting compliments from their families on how welcoming our community was to them. With that, I thank you all for an amazing programming year, and look forward to all that is to come in the future! -Matt Rissien

KERUV Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim,

With summer upon us, I hope you are able to have more quality time with your family and friends. Speaking of quality time (in a different forum), I recently attended a conference sponsored by USCJ called ‘Expanding our Embrace: Creating Space for Interfaith Families in our Kehillot.’ This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together representatives from many synagogues throughout the Midwest to discuss how to create a more welcoming environment for interfaith married couples. As you may recall our Keruv initiative evolved through the leadership of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. USCJ is just beginning to provide support and outreach to Conservative synagogues to address this opportunity. As I listened to the stories the participants shared (some were quite painful) I once again became so appreciative of the response Beth Shalom has made to welcoming so many diverse Jewish families to our synagogue family. In recent months, I have come to realize that being welcoming and being inclusive are not necessarily one in the same. A family cannot be inclusive without being welcoming but being welcoming does not necessarily guarantee creating an atmosphere of inclusion. Over the last several years our Keruv/Interfaith Marriage Initiative has worked with the Board of Trustees to address language in our bylaws that was not consistent with our aspiration to be an inclusive community. I have been asked over the years why I thought it was important to change a document that well over 90% of our members never looked at or even knew existed. While we have been welcoming of our interfaith family for many years, our bylaws stated the spouses who were not Jewish were not part of the application process and were not members of Beth Shalom. These are statements of exclusion that I am proud to say that our Board of Trustees have removed. Our bylaws are not only rules of order for us to follow, but the words we use to articulate these rules are also a statement of our and our leaders’ inclusionary values as a community. What I learned at this conference is that very few synagogues have even begun to address exclusionary language in their bylaws with their Board leadership. Until they do, these synagogues may be very welcoming, but they are not inclusive. I also learned that within the Conservative Movement only 19% of these synagogues include interfaith family welcoming statements on their websites, only 20% have an outreach committee, and only 12% have offered an interfaith family program. I want to give a BIG SHOUTOUT to our lay and professional leadership to have both the wisdom and courage to be a national leader in becoming a community of inclusion. Are there ritual participatory limitations for our members who are not Jewish? Yes, but with our current bylaws there is very little social and communal differentiation among all our members. I suspect that 50 years ago our Beth Shalom leadership like our country was not thinking about phrases such as diversity, inclusion, and interfaith family welcoming. Beth Shalom’s growth and richness is directly related to its commitment to evolve as a community. Have we completed this evolution? Not possible, but I truly believe that we will continue to maintain this commitment to our many wonderful initiatives that represent our value to be inclusive. On behalf of our Keruv Committee, Happy 50th Anniversary Congregation Beth Shalom. As always, I can be contacted at cbskeruv@gmail.com.

SISTERHOOD Leatte Gelfeld

Hard to believe how quickly this year has flown. Sisterhood has had a fantastic year with lots of amazing events! Our opening luncheon with Hamilton’s Arianna Afsar was great, we had many attend our second annual Great Round Challah bake with our own Judy Wolkin, our holiday boutique brought in record vendors and sales, we did a 50th anniversary Casino event with the Men’s Club, our Sisterhood Shabbat dinner and evening service was beautiful, along with our book reviews, knitting Sundays, game day tournament, Pesach learning with Rabbi Ari, women’s health morning and so many other events. Thank you to all of our board members who ran these events behind the scenes, served on Shabbat mornings, baked kugels and baked for Pesach. We are so lucky to have a group of great women who do whatever it takes to get the job done and make it successful. And to those that attended, we could not have done it without your support!

MEN’S CLUB Dan Sher

What an amazing year we had this year for Men’s Club. I put together some milestones that I wanted to share to help demonstrate everything that Men’s Club did this year, as well as help you see everything that Men’s Club does for Congregation Beth Shalom and our greater community. This year, we ended with over 450 total membership and those members donated more than 750 hours of service to Men’s Club and Congregation Beth Shalom. How? I’m glad you asked! Men’s Club had twenty-two Sunday breakfasts this year including our Scholar-inResidence, JUF Brunch, and our Israel-in-Depth series with the Israel Committee and Adult Education. As part of our breakfasts we fed more than 1,000 people. One of our major fundraisers for the year as well as one of our largest tikkun olam is our annual lox box program. This year, we sold more than 1,250 lox boxes which includes almost 650 donations to The ARK and CJE Seniorlife, which can feed almost 4,000 people. In continuing our support for CJE Seniorlife in conjunction with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club (FJMC) Midwest Region, we have volunteered ten times at Lieberman Center for Shabbat Services. In addition, also through FJMC, we distributed more than 1,100 yellow candles as part of our Yom Hashoah remembrance. Finally, with all of the work and all of the fundraising that Men’s Club has done this year and every year, we have been very fortunate to donate $30,000 this year. Along with other donations to Congregation Beth Shalom, this year Men’s Club has donated the cameras and equipment necessary to stream our services online. We have also donated to several Israel Organizations, JUF, The ARK, CJE Seniorlife, and the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. I am proud of the work that our Men’s Club has done this year and look forward to our 2018-2019 year when we will be taking our first Men’s Club trip to Israel – it isn’t too late to come with us.

HIGH HOLIDAY HONORS As our synagogue has grown much larger, it has become more challenging and important to be inclusive and personal. We realize that some families have been members for many years and have never had a High Holiday honor. In this spirit, we would like to invite any adult member of Congregation Beth Shalom who has never received a High Holiday honor to let us know if you would like one. Don’t worry if you can’t read Hebrew, it will be a non-speaking honor. In time, your opportunity to step up to the Bima will come. We look forward to the day when we can say that all who wish to be honored have been honored. We look forward to hearing from you. Please fill out the attached form and return it to the synagogue (Congregation Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Ave, Northbrook, IL 60062, attn. High Holidays Honors) or email it to MGarlin@BethShalomNB.org with High Holiday Honors in the subject line by August 10th.
