RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS I’ve said before that even though I’ve been at CBS less than a year, it’s sometimes hard to remember life before I was here. Most of the time this is a good thing; it means that I feel comfortable and at home. It means that most people are familiar enough that they don’t feel like strangers (sometimes even if I’m meeting them for the first time)! The downside is that people often assume I know more about CBS as an institution, and the people who create the CBS community than I actually do. I’ve had real conversations where I’ve had to ask, “now when did this happen?” or “I think I must be missing a crucial part of this story, could you please fill me in?” There is usually a surprised pause, and then we laugh, and the person obliges. I find that it’s human nature that we are very quick to share information that really isn’t anyone’s business, or might be viewed as gossip, and slow to share the things that the community should know. I can think of numerous times in other communities where I’ve heard the details of someone’s affair, but not heard that someone else was in a major car accident. Rabbi Ferratier

It has even happened that I’ve occasionally had someone say to me “You know, Rabbi, so-and-so is really disappointed that they were ill/in the hospital/became a grandparent/moved and you didn’t say anything to them.” Of course I’m always very sorry to have disappointed someone, but I can’t call someone to share in their happiness or hardship if I don’t know about it. It may feel as though I’ve been here all along, but in actuality, I’m new enough that I have not yet developed my go-to sources of information. If there’s something you think I should know, please tell me about it. Now, of course, this isn’t an invitation to come in and give me all of the dirt on our community. However, this is my way of saying that if you know someone in the community is suffering or rejoicing, check with them first, and then let me, Rabbi Melman, Cantor Stoehr, or someone on the Mitzvah Committee know. Our tradition tells us that every Jew is responsible for every other Jew. One of the best ways to live this dictum is by taking care of the people in our community. Being wise about what to share, when to share it, and with whom is one of the elements that binds us together as a synagogue.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Recently, a congregant asked me how I know what is the president’s job and what isn’t? On one level, the answer is simple. The president’s job as stated in the bylaws is to preside over the business of the congregation. But on a deeper level, I find that my job is much more than that. As I continue to ponder the question, I find that I feel a responsibility to lead us into the future. I know that I have to run meetings and sit on the bimah on Shabbat, but what more is required of me? How do I know what to do? How do I know what is too much or not enough? I was thinking that this congregant asked an excellent question. As I get about a quarter of the way through my term, are my goals still relevant? What about my vision statement from the beginning of my term? Am I getting bogged down in the details and not thinking about the big picture? As I consider the question, I know I am not satisfied with the easy answers. I constantly go back to review notes from previous meetings, look at my annual Board of Trustees planning calendar, and check in with Executive Board members, professional staff, and past presidents. But that is managing logistics. What about what I want to personally accomplish? What is my “why”? Tanya Solomon

I may not be able to answer that congregant’s question completely this month, but I know where I want to see our community going. I work hard to review aspects of CBS’ operations and make them as efficient as possible to give us time: time for our professional staff to focus on learning, teaching, and guiding us, time for our Board to have high level discussions at meetings, time for congregants to attend classes and services in order to really gain value and connections to our community; time to think about what is truly important, and time to then go ahead and act on those things. We need the time for us to live our mission, together. So, the final answer may be that there is no final answer. I need to continue questioning, continue working with everyone in the congregation and continue shaping the answer to what I am doing for the rest of my term as president. Let’s continue to question and continue to strive for the future together. Tanya

Why LEGACY? Why NOW? And WHO? Congregation Beth Shalom, with the help of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, has created The Legacy Society. The purpose of this program is to provide long term financial assistance to CBS and its members. With a successful program, we will help ensure that CBS will be here for generations and generations to come. Think of it like L’dor V’dor, handing over the synagogue from generation to generation. We want Beth Shalom to be here for the Us InofWelcoming New Members to for Congregation Shalom Jewish Join Community Northbrook, notThese just today but for tomorrow and it to be a secondBeth home for generations to come. Joining our Legacy Society is easy and there isn’t a bill attached. It’s a concept you agree to now and the funding occurs later. Help make a difference in the lives of those who will come after you. By paying it forward you will benefit others in the future, perhaps your own children and grandchildren. Let us explain how easy it is to be a part of this special program. We will be holding informational meetings in the near future. Please contact me at legacy@bethshalomnb.org or Michael Garlin at MGarlin@BethShalomNB.org. We look forward to having you join The Legacy Society at CBS and to help secure the congregation’s future. Thank you, Glen Roter

SECURITY Congregation Beth Shalom Security Protocols A letter from CBS Staff and Board of Trustees to our CBS Congregants, CBS Staff are often asked about security and current protocols. The questions are always focused on how someone personally feels about security. We want to remind everyone that we take security very seriously at CBS; people walk into the building seven days a week, 365 days a year, so security must be a priority for all of us. We now live in a very difficult time in the history of our country. Anti-Semitism and attacks on Jewish students and facilities are on the rise. Although we can’t share all of our security protocols, we would like to share the following with you to make you feel a bit more at ease: x

CBS has a security plan, regularly assesses risks, and revisits our security procedures to update them accordingly. It is important to be proactive in preparing for potential security scenarios. CBS meets and has developed relationships with public safety officials including; police, fire, and EMS. CBS regularly consults with each of them and other Chicago area organizations. We provide yearly security training to all staff and appropriate volunteer leaders. We run regular safety and security exercises, reviewing how to respond to different scenarios. We maintain and update facility security systems and technology. We have established procedures for controlling access into CBS. We always encourage staff, leadership, and constituents to be mindful of suspicious activity, and ensure that they are familiar with procedures for reporting it. When you see something, say something. We have established an emergency response plan that may include evacuation, shelter-inplace, or lockdown. We are prepared to continue CBS operations and services after an incident, such as being able to access important computer data and records off-site. We have established a policy for our CBS website or other online communications that takes security into consideration. We have established an information security plan to protect sensitive data.

We ask that if you feel a sense of insecurity, are unsure of your safety, or if you see something that doesn’t feel right, PLEASE reach out to Michael Garlin, the clergy, any CBS employee or a Board Member and let us know. Security is of high importance at CBS and we will continue to update and harden the security at CBS as information continues to be gathered and brought to our attention. Sincerely, Congregation Beth Shalom Staff and Board of Trustees

Tu B’shevat is a holiday connected to the agricultural cycle of the Land of Israel. Falling in the middle of the Jewish month of Shevat, the 15th day of the month, it is the New Year or birthday of the Trees, (Monday, February 10), and often celebrated by planting saplings. Some people celebrate by participating in a sedermeal that echoes the Passover seder, in which the produce of trees, including fruits and nuts, are eaten. Many people also celebrate Tu B’shevat by planting trees in JNF forests.

SISTERHOOD Robyn Rosengard

WHAT, is it February already??? A big thank you to Laurie B. Davis for a wonderful job planning our Torah Fund event in December. We were so very inspired to hear Rabbi Ferratier and Cantor Gershon relate their experiences with Torah Fund and Women’s League as students at The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. Torah Fund is the major fundraising effort by the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ), supporting our five Conservative seminaries around the world. Sisterhood is an affiliate of the WLCJ.

At the beginning of February, we had our wonderful Sisterhood Shabbat, A Musical Celebration of Women. I would like to thank Denise Eisenberg and Susan Rosenthal for all their hard work and devotion to this meaningful Shabbat service and dinner. This is the time of year that I start thinking about spring. I know the days are still short and the budding leaves and plants are still a few months away, but we never stop planning and doing. Soon the days will get longer, and the weather will eventually turn better. I hope you will be encouraged to come to CBS and attend a Sisterhood event or program. Here are some of our upcoming events (check out this bulletin for flyers and details): Tuesday, March 24th - Thursday, March 26th – Pesach Kiddushim Baking Wednesday, April 22nd – Jan Blum Memorial Game Night We are always looking for people to help serve kiddush on Shabbat mornings. It really is a lot of fun. If you would like to help, please let me know. You may also reach out to our Serving Coordinator, Leslie Rogoff lbrogoff@aol.com. This past fall and winter the news has been filled with many reports of despicable Anti-Semitic acts around our country and the world and on many of the college campuses that are attended by our community’s young adults. Let’s all say a prayer for peace and tolerance. There are many ways to help and the Synagogue office has many resources available. Hoping for spring to be sprung…sooner rather than later. Stay warm! B’Shalom, Robyn

MEN’S CLUB Steven Elisco

February is a transitional month for the Men’s Club, which begins with two very important programs from our Special Program and Israel in Depth Breakfast Series: Join your Men's Club and Congregations around the world as we teach the mitzvah of wrapping tefillin. The World Wide Wrap unites men, women and children in prayer. This year we shall be experiencing “Davening in the Dark”, a heightened sensory approach to the morning service. The program will begin at 8:45 AM, with CBS Breakfast by Men’s Club to following the service.

Join us for the sixth and final session in this year’s Israel in Depth series. Polls show that support for Israel remains strong among Americans in general and American Jews specifically, but there's no denying that millennials view the Jewish state through very different lenses than their elders. The program begins at 10:00 AM after breakfast provided by the Men’s Club. What is a slow programing month for the Men’s Club, February conceals all the work that is going on behind the scene, planning for a very busy Spring. We begin March with Lox Box, the largest program we undertake each year that provides a wonderful meal for the purchasers or gift recipients, raises funds for the Men's Club and most importantly, provides food for both the CJE and The Ark. The delivery/pick-up date is Sunday, March 1, 2020. See the flyer on page 5 for all the various Lox Box options and ordering instructions or order online at http://cbsloxbox.square.site. In the March, 2020 CBS Bulletin, I will be announcing the 2020 Man and Youth of the Year. The FJMC Midwest Region event where these honorees will be recognized, will be held on Sunday, March 15th at Beth Hillel Bnai Emunah, 3220 Big Tree Lane, Wilmette. The event begins at 4:30 PM with Dinner at 5:30 PM. The event costs $36 per person until March 4th, at which time it will go up to $45 per person. If you are planning on attending the event, you can register now at https://midwestregionfjmc.myshopify.com. Please consider participating in these spiritual, educational and socially significant programs. L 'Shalom Steven

KERUV

Shalom Chaverim, As the winter of 2020 continues to keep its hold on us, I hope your hearts and homes continue to be filled with warmth and kindness. I recognize the timing of this Dr. Dr. Bob question, which is a representation of many discussions I have had with families over the years, is a few weeks off, but the stirred-up emotion related to this topic can in some families and relationships linger on beyond the December holiday season. This concerned parent visited her daughter’s family in December and observed the family had a decorated Christmas tree. This troubled her because of the influence this may have on her grandchildren even though her daughter and son-in-law do not believe in organized religion. Dear Dr. Bob, I raised my children in a traditional Jewish home. My daughter married someone who is not Jewish who by the way is a wonderful husband and father. They have chosen to not practice any religion and to not expose their children to any religious practices. While I have struggled with their decision, they live a life that is very consistent with many Jewish values and have created a very loving and supportive home for their children. Upon arriving to their home, I observed that they had a decorated tree in their living room. They said it had no religious significance, referring to it as a ‘holiday’ tree which for them represents a time of year to be loving and compassionate toward others. However, I saw a ‘Christmas’ tree which to me is a religious symbol of a Christian holiday. It seemed to be that this was creating a religious imbalance for my grandchildren. Hence, my conflict. I feel hurt and disappointed that my daughter has rejected our family traditions and values. I chose not to raise my concerns to them during my visit, but I am still troubled. What should I do? Dear Troubled Parent, For many (if not most) Jews the tree has been viewed as ‘the’ religious symbol of Christmas. Based on my very unscientific research poll, Jews place much more religious significance on the tree than Christians do. I have also learned over the years from discussions with my wife (who was raised Catholic) and friends that their feelings about the tree are much more in line with what your daughter told you. Jews also have many symbols associated with holidays (latkes, dreidels, hamantaschens) that do not have religious significance. You mentioned that your daughter and her family are living a life which is very consistent with how you raised her. While she has not embraced your family’s Jewish traditions, it seems that you have many reasons to be very proud of her in the way she conducts her life. As parents, we tend to focus on the ways our children are different than us rather than on the many ways they are similar. I understand that you are disappointed in her disconnect from religion, but I think she has embraced many of your values and she affirms that every day. As for your grandchildren, perhaps you can discuss with their parents creating opportunities to teach/share with them their mother’s and grandmother’s heritage while being mindful of and sensitive to their decision to live a secular life. You didn’t indicate how your visit went with your family. I hope it went well. I think you were wise to not bring up your concerns during the visit, especially if your emotions were in a more heightened state. If you have an open/reflective relationship with your daughter, and now that you have had some distance and time to reflect on your own feelings, perhaps you can seize an opportunity in the near future to discuss and share with each other not only your different values but also the many ways you have similar core beliefs. As always, I welcome your constructive comments and feedback. I can be contacted at cbskeruv@gmail.com.

MAY THEIR MEMORY BE FOR A BLESSING If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in the Beit Midrash. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year when Yizkor is recited. Call Maria Catezone (847-498-4100) for information or to order a plaque. In memory of LOLITA GARCIA DE FARNOS, JOAQUIN J. FARNOS REYES, JOAQUIN A. FARNOS GARCIA by Loly Farnos and Herb Lesnoy

CBS Yahrzeit Notifications and Name Reading To help honor the memory of your loved ones, you will receive Yahrzeit notifications via email during the month prior to the remembrance date. Your loved one’s name will be read at evening services the day before in addition to morning and evening services on the day of the Yahrzeit. It is appropriate to light a Yahrzeit candle the evening before the remembrance date. In addition, Yahrzeits for the upcoming week will be printed in the Shabbat brochure. We no longer read all of the names for the week’s Yahrzeits during Shabbat services and have not done so for over three years. If you do not receive your notification or prefer paper mail, please contact Eli Castellano at ecastellano@bethshalomnb.org or 847-498-4100 x.29. 22
